  • Creating combinations that have no more one intersecting element

    I am looking to create a special type of combination in which no two sets have more than one intersecting element. Let me explain with an example: Let us say we have 9 letter set that contains A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I If you create the standard non-repeating combinations of three letters you will have 9C3 sets. These will contain sets like ABC, ABD, BCD, etc. I am looking to create sets that have at the most only 1 common letter. So in this example, we will get following sets: ABC, ADG, AEI, AFH, BEH, BFG, BDI, CFI, CDH, CEG, DEF, and GHI - note that if you take any two sets there are no more than 1 repeating letter. What would be a good way to generate such sets? It should be scalable solution so that I can do it for a set of 1000 letters, with sub set size of 4. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks

  • How do I dynamically name objects in Java?

    Let's say I needed to make a series of String[] objects. I know that if i wanted to make a string array called "test" to hold 3 Strings I could do String[] test = new String[3]; But let's say I needed to make a series of these arrays and I wanted them to be named, 1,2, 3, 4, 5... etc. For however many I needed and I didn't know how many I'd need. How do I achieve a similar effect to this: for (int k=0; k=5; k++){ String[] k = new String[3]; } Which would created 5 string arrays named 1 through 5. Basically I want to be able to create array objects with a name detemined by some other function. Why can't I seem to do this? Am I just being stupid?

  • Optimal password salt length

    I tried to find the answer to this question on Stack Overflow without any success. Let's say I store passwords using SHA-1 hash (so it's 160 bits) and let's assume that SHA-1 is enough for my application. How long should be the salt used to generated password's hash? The only answer I found was that there's no point in making it longer than the hash itself (160 bits in this case) which sounds logical, but should I make it that long? E.g. Ubuntu uses 8-byte salt with SHA-512 (I guess), so would 8 bytes be enough for SHA-1 too or maybe it would be too much?

  • How is includegraphic interfering with tabular?

    I'm editing a text provided by my client as a LyX file that includes graphics and other files that I don't have. I've "commented out" the graphics by putting in a custom preamble that substitutes the file-loading definitions with macros that just quote their arguments. However, the \includegraphic macro throws up an error in the two tabular environments where it is used, complaining that \endfirsthead was never defined. What is this macro, and why is it interfering with mine?   • How to transfer binary data through multiple http server?

    Well, the question is not intended to be that big. Let me explain the scenario: I have two http servers. server A is accessible to end user by web browser, while server B is internal server which can only be accessed by server A. If server B generate some big jpeg image in local disk, obviously we can't just delivery those path to image to server A and eventually to end user. Then, how to let end user see those image without firstly storing those image data in server A temporarily? I run PHP on server A and perl on server B, but this should not matter. I need a general pattern for implementing this.

  • How to allow users to select their own grouping for a .NET TreeView control

    I am using a treeview to display projects, tasks, time entries, and the people who are working on a project. I would like to allow the user to define a custom grouping (ie. Project->Task->Time Entries or Project->Date (of time entry)->Task->TimeEntry). The relevant groups would be Project, Task, Time Entry, and Person, with some metadata from them. I want to have some modular way to allow a user to specify how they would like to display the information. Does anyone know of a good method by which this can be done? I currently have hard-coded a display which looks like this: Project Task Time Entry Next Project ... My thought is to do something like write methods to display each type and somehow let a user select what order the display would group. Please let me know if I am not being clear enough.

  • Using Scanner in Java how can I hasNext(aString) where the string is not regex pattern?

    Hi, I am trying to do as my question states, sooo I have the following code which would find the match. String test = scan.next(); if (test.equals("$let")) return 1; However, I would prefer to use hasNext as to not consume a token; however, when i do the following it fails. if (scan.hasNext("$let")) return 1; I realize the when giving has next a variable it expects a pattern, but I thought if i don't have any regex symbols it should work. I also thought $ was possibly some regex symbol so I tried /$ however, that did not work! Thanks for the help!

    I wish to perform an experiment many different times. After every trial, I am left with a "large" set of output statistics -- let's say, 1000. I would like to store the outputs of my experiments in a table, but what's the best way...? Option 1 Have a table with 1000 columns. Seems like a bad idea. What if the number of statistics one day exceeds the maximum number of columns? Option 2 Have a table with three columns. Let's say, ID, StatisticType, and StatisticValue. That way, you can have as many statistics as you want. However, reading a single experiments statistics becomes more complicated. Moreover, what if different statistics are different data types?? Any suggestions?

    So let me preface this by saying that I'm not an SQL wizard by any means. What I want to do is simple as a concept, but has presented me with a small challenge when trying to minimize the amount of database queries I'm performing. Let's say I have a table of departments. Within each department is a list of employees. What is the most efficient way of listing all the departments and which employees are in each department. So for example if I have a department table with: id name 1 sales 2 marketing And a people table with: id department_id name 1 1 Tom 2 1 Bill 3 2 Jessica 4 1 Rachel 5 2 John What is the best way list all departments and all employees for each department like so: Sales Tom Bill Rachel Marketing Jessica John Pretend both tables are actually massive. (I want to avoid getting a list of departments, and then looping through the result and doing an individual query for each department). Think similarly of selecting the statuses/comments in a Facebook-like system, when statuses and comments are stored in separate tables.

    Hi All, I am experimenting with the Google App Engine and have a question. For the sake of simplicity, let's say my app is modeling a computer network (a fairly large corporate network with 10,000 nodes). I am trying to model my Node class as follows: class Node(db.Model): name = db.StringProperty() neighbors = db.SelfReferenceProperty() Let's suppose, for a minute, that I cannot use a ListProperty(). Based on my experiments to date, I can assign only a single entity to 'neighbors' - and I cannot use the "virtual" collection (node_set) to access the list of Node neighbors. So... my questions are: Does SelfReferenceProperty limit you to a single entity that you can reference? If I instead use a ListProperty, I believe I am limited to 5,000 keys, which I need to exceed.     I have several pages, let's call them A, B and C. Each of these pages has a form where the user can type in some information and click a button to send those information to the server. This button click is performed in an UpdatePanel to prevent a full postback. A customer of ours now wants to know how many % of the using visiting each site (A, B and C have different URLs) use this form. (Meaning I need seperate values for A, B and C) How to I track this in Google Analytics? It seems that I have to create a conversion(??) for each page. Is that correct? How must I modify the existing web application to let Google Analytics know, that a user submitted the form. (without the need to redirect thank to xy amount of different thank you pages) The only piece of information I've found so far is this: http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55519 Unfortunately, this FAQ entry does not cover my answer.

I have something that works, but seems far from the "Ruby way": def x(str, arr, rep='?') i = 0 query.gsub(rep) { i+=1; arr[i-1] } end Is there a more idiomatic way of doing this?   • Rails best practice on conditional parameters in a controller action

    I have a controller create action looks for one or more parameters in the following ruleset. Let's say we have two parameters, foo and bar. The rules are the following: 1) if foo doesn't exist in the parameter list, bar must. 2) if bar doesn't exist in the parameter list, foo must. 3) they can both co-exist. they can't both be omitted (that's redundant with my rules above :) ) Can anyone show an example in Rails on how this is handled in the controller? Should I use a before_filter? Would appreciate some guidance as this isn't something that ActiveRecord validates.. so I'd need to build an error message to the user directly from controller logic, not model logic. For bonus points, I output the error in XML, so if you can show how that's done, that'd be great. Hypothetically let's call the resource "Lorem", so it is created via http://foo/lorem.xml and we have lorem_controller.rb.

    I'd like to pre-store a bunch of function calls in a data structure and later evaluate/execute them from within another function. This works as planned for functions defined at namespace level with defn (even though the function definition comes after my creation of the data structure) but will not work with functions defined by let [name (fn or letfn inside the function.     Hi, I have designed a new web site. I have hosted it online. I want it to be of the best performance and load pages faster. This website is designed in php 5.0+ using codeigniter. This is using mysql as DB. I have images on it. I am using Nitobi grid for displaying set of records on page. The rest is everything normal page controls. As i am not so very experienced with website performance factors i would like to get suggestions and details on factors that can improve performance of website. Please let me know how i can improve my performance. Also please let me know if there are any ways to measure the performance of website and also any websites or tools to help test the performance.   • Is it possible to change WCF service without regenerating & recompiling client proxy?

    Let's say I have a WCF service which has a method returning object Person. In one of the clients of this service, I can add service reference to the service and start using its method. Now, let's say the Person class is changed on the server, having a new DataMember added. Other clients will make use of this new DataMember, but my client doesn't. Therefore, this client shouldn't even be aware that the service returns s/t "more" than what it needs. Is there any way that my client can still work with the service without having to update the service reference (which, as I understand, means regenerating the proxy & compiling it)?

    Is there any way to get the caller function with something else than debug_backtrace()? I'm looking for a less greedy way to simulate scopes like friend or internal. Let's say I have a class A and a class B. Until now, I've been using debug_backtrace(), which is too greedy (IMHO). I thought of something like this: <?php class A { public function __construct(B $callerObj) {} } class B { public function someMethod() { $obj = new A($this); } } ?> It might be OK if you want to limit it to one specific class, but let's say I have 300 classes, and I want to limit it to 25 of them? One way could be using an interface to aggregate: public function __construct(CallerInterface $callerObj) But it's still an ugly code. Moreover, you can't use that trick with static classes. Have any better idea?

    I have a save-plots function which I call it in my final command of behavior space to export selected plots, I could create unique names for plots so they don't replace each other, for example my output file name for one of the plots is like this: DeathRates, PS true, HCHA false 100,true.csv Let FileNameDeathRates ( word "D: /Results/" "DeathRates, " "PS "PS? ", HCHA " HCHA? MPS "," CV? ".csv" ) So far is good, but I want is to have a directory with name of the experiment and export all plots of that experiment in that directory for example: Let DirName( word "D:/Results/" "PS "PS? ", HCHA " HCHA? MPS "," CV? ) Netlogo already exports plots with proper name and I just want the directory name to be different , and of course prior to the experiment the directory does not exist so the directory should be created first , I could not find a command to create a directory in netlogo without pathdir extension. Any idea on how can I do this? Thanks in advance ;)

  • Git Status Across Multiple Repositories on a Mac

    I have been searching for a solution to this for a while and have not found quite what I need. I have several Git Repositories in a folder on my Mac (OSX 10.6) and would like a script or tool that will loop through all the repositories and let me know if any of them needs "commit"-ing. This is my structure Sites   /project1   /project2   /project3 I want the tool to do a "git status" in Sites/project1, Sites/project2, Sites/project3 and let me know if Sites/project2 and Sites/project3 have changes or new files and needs to be Staged/committed The closest script I found that might be hackable is here: http://gist.github.com/371828 but even that script wouldn't run and I get an error: "syntax error near unexpected token `do" which might have been written for *nix.

  • Anyone know of a .net library/utility that will convert a word document to an mp3 format

    Anyone know of any well-supported/proven methods for converting a Microsoft word document to an MP3 or wav format such that hearing-impaired folks could "listen" to documents that I have stored in my web-based document management system? I already have the interface built such that someone can use the telephone to get the list of documents available, with the dates and titles "read" to them over the phone, but now I would like the ability to let someone actually listen to the contents of word files stored in the system. Ideally a .net library or utility that would let me convert the DOC - MP3 after each upload would be best, but one that "read" the file on demand would be OK too.

    I have an Excel worksheet in XML format which contains <Cell ss:StyleID="s127"><Data ss:Type="String">A01-Replace</Data></Cell> I want to replace @A01-Replace with a different string. I'm using the XQuery's replace function like so: let $excel := doc("excel.xml") let $test := "another string" return replace($excel, "(A[0-9]+-Replace)", $test) Before calling replace, the variable $excel is valid XML upon output. However, when I output $excel after I call the replace function, all of the XML tags have been stripped, and $excel is a string with the content of the cells as its values. I would like to keep the XML tags there. Any ideas?
