• What is the program "Additional Drivers" (jockey-gtk) talking me about?

  The program says: "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" But it doesn't say if it is talking about graphical drivers only or what. Then, it lists two drivers: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 173). NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [recomended] Both have exactly the same description. What is the difference then? When I select the 1st one, it says: "This river is not activated",and there's a button to "activate" it. When I select the 2nd one, it says: "This river is activated but it is not currently in use", and the button is to "remove". So which one is in use? Why or what for should I have activated (enabled) and not in use? If it is in use it is activated? What is the difference between activate and remove? and what is the relationship between installed, activated, in use, enabled and removed, disabled, inactive and not-installed? Why can I activate the inactivated and remove (but not deactivate) the activated that is not in use? All this is very puzzling... What other drivers can I use for an Apple MacBook pro 3,1 and how? • Do you write unit tests for all the time in TDD?

  I have been designing and developing code with TDD style for a long time. What disturbs me about TDD is writing tests for code that does not contain any business logic or interesting behaviour. I know TDD is a design activity more than testing but sometimes I feel it's useless to write tests in these scenarios. For example I have a simple scenario like "When user clicks check button, it should check file's validity". For this scenario I usually start writing tests for presenter/controller class like the one below. @Test public void when_user_clicks_check_it_should_check_selected_file_validity(){ MediaService service =mock(MediaService); View view =mock(View); when(view.getSelectedFile).thenReturns("c:\\Dir\\file.avi"); MediaController controller =new MediaController(service,view); controller.check(); verify(service).check("c:\\Dir\\file.avi"); } As you can see there is no design decision or interesting code to verify behaviour. I am testing values from view passed to MediaService. I usually write but don't like these kind of tests. What do yo do about these situations ? Do you write tests for all the time ? UPDATE : I have changed the test name and code after complaints. Some users said that you should write tests for the trivial cases like this so in the future someone might add interesting behaviour. But what about “Code for today, design for tomorrow.” ? If someone, including myself, adds more interesting code in the future the test can be created for it then. Why should I do it now for the trivial cases ?

• How you choose your first job as a programmer? [on hold]

  For Brief I am a recently graduated CS student. I am looking for a job these days, but I have no idea what kind of software development jobs I like(embedded system,web development or else...). And I am looking for your advice. Here is a little more While I was a student, I had an one year internship experience as a system engineer in a semi-conductor company where I wrote Linux driver, tuned system performance, etc.. I was happy about this experience as it allowed me to deepen my understanding of the operating system and different low level things. And I thought "Em, I will continue in the embedded area after I graduate". At the end of my study, I am doing an another internship in web development, both front-end and back-end. And I also enjoys a lot the process of learning new things and making it work (Backbone, Node, socketio, etc..). Now, when I am looking for a software development position, I do not know what to apply! All I know is that I want a job which allows me to keep up with the trends instead of repeating. But besides this, I've no idea what specific type of job I want to do. Turn back to embedded system? Continue with web development? Change to other promising areas(data mining)? All these development positions makes no big difference to me. But I think this is not good and I need some criteria at choosing. So I am looking for advice and I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

• New Tuxedo White Papers

  As part of the Tuxedo 11gR1 release, I've written two new white papers on Tuxedo. One is called "Tuxedo in a SOA World" and discusses how Tuxedo fits into SOA based applications. It covers most of the various connectivity options from Tuxedo into SOA environments and gives guidance as to which connectivity options are best suited for a particular application requirement. The other white paper "SCA: Bringing Modern SOA Programing to Tuxedo" is of a more technical bent and focuses on using the SCA features in SALT to easily build SOA based applications on Tuxedo without using a lot of technical APIs. In fact, services built using SALT's SCA support don't require any technical APIs, just pure business logic, and SCA clients need at most a couple of API calls, simply to look up a service. • Some New .NET Toys (Repost)

  Last week I was fortunate enough to spend time in Redmond on Microsoft’s campus for the 2011 Microsoft MVP Summit. It was great to hang out with a number of old friends and get the opportunity to talk tech with the various product teams up at Microsoft. The weather wasn’t exactly sunny but Microsoft always does a great job with the Summit and everyone had a blast (heck, I even got to run the bases at SafeCo field) While much of what we saw is covered under NDA, there a ton of great things in the pipeline from Microsoft and many things that are already available (or just became so) that I wasn’t necessarily aware of. The purpose of this post is to share some of the info I learned on resources and tools available to .NET developers today. Please let me know if you have any questions (or if you know of something else cool which might benefit others). Enjoy! Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Microsoft has issued the RTM release of Visual Studio 2010 SP1. You can download the full SP1 on MSDN as of today (March 10th to the general public) and take advantage of such things as: Silverlight 4 is included in the box (as opposed to a separate install) Silverlight 4 Profiling WCF RIA Services SP1 Intellitrace for 64-bit and SharePoint ASP.NET now easily supports IIS Express and SQL CE Want a description of all that’s new beyond the above biased list (which arguably only contains items I think are important)? Check out this KB article. Portable Library Tools CTP Without much fanfare Microsoft has released a CTP of a new add-in to Visual Studio 2010 which simplifies code sharing between projects targeting different runtimes (i.e. Silverlight, WPF, Win7 Phone, XBox). With this Add-In installed you can add a new project of type “Portable Library” and specify which platforms you wish to target. Once that is done, any code added to this library will be limited to use only features which are common to all selected frameworks. Other projects can now reference this portable library and be provided assemblies custom built to their environment. This greatly simplifies the current process of sharing linked files between platforms like WPF and Silverlight. You can find out more about this CTP and how it works on this great blog post. Visual Studio Async CTP Microsoft has also released a CTP of a set of language and framework enhancements to provide a much more powerful asynchronous programming model. Due to the focus on async programming in all types of platforms (and it being the ONLY option in Silverlight and Win7 phone) a move towards a simpler and more understandable model is always a good thing. This CTP (called Visual Studio Async CTP) can be downloaded here. You can read more about this CTP on this blog post. MSDN Code Samples Gallery Microsoft has also launched new code samples gallery on their MSDN site: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/. This site allows you to easily search for small samples of code related to a particular technology or platform. If a sample of code you are looking for is not found, you can request one via the site and other developers can see your request and provide a sample to the site to suit your needs. You can also peruse requested samples and, if you find a scenario where you can provide value, upload your own sample for the benefit of others. Samples are packaged into the VS .vsix format and include any necessary references/dependencies. By using .vsix as the deployment mechanism, as samples are installed from the site they are kept in your Visual Studio 2010 Samples Gallery and kept for your future reference. If you get a chance, check out the site and see how it is done. Although a somewhat simple concept, I was very impressed with their implementation and the way they went about trying to suit a need. I’ll definitely be looking there in the future as need something or want to share something. MSDN Search Capabilities Another item I learned recently and was not aware of (that might seem trivial to some) is the power of the MSDN site’s search capabilities. Between the Code Samples Gallery described above and the search enhancements on MSDN, Microsoft is definitely investing in their platform to help provide developers of all skill levels the tools and resources they need to be successful. What do I mean by the MSDN search capability and why should you care? If you go to the MSDN home page (http://msdn.microsoft.com) and use the “Search MSDN with Big” box at the very top of the page you will see some very interesting results. First, the search actually doesn’t just search the MSDN library it searches: MSDN Library All Microsoft Blogs CodePlex StackOverflow Downloads MSDN Magazine Support Knowledgebase (I’m not sure it even ends there but the above are all I know of) Beyond just searching all the above locations, the results are formatted very nicely to give some contextual information based on where the result came from. For example, if a keyword search returned results from CodePlex, each row in the search results screen would include a large amount of information specific to CodePlex such as: Looking at the above results immediately tells you everything from the page views to the CodePlex ratings. All in all, knowing that this much information is indexed and available from a single search location will lead me to utilize this as one of my initial searches for development information.

  Possible Duplicate: migrating PR / rankings from one site to another Ive been writing a blog for the past yr or so, with about 300 published articles, the blog have been running under a subdomain blog.mysite.com We are no looking to change the url of our site, so the blog is going to have to be ported over to a subdoamin on the new site. We would really like to keep the backlog / archive of all the articles we have written but dont wont to be penalized for having duplicate content, could we just remove / unindex the urls from google in webmaster tools then export the blog and import it back to our new blog ? Would google still see this a duplicate content or becuase ive removed the urls have they no longer got a copy of it ? thanks

• XAF DSL Tool Needs a new Team Lead

  I have enjoyed my time on this project and have used it in several production projects.  However, with the enhancements in Visual Studio 2010 and the Entity Framework, the DSL tool doesn’t make sense for me to support at this time.  With that said, I am looking for someone who has interest to continue the project if they so desire.  I have moved my attention to creating a new project at Entity Framework Extensions for XAF.  We are converting the current DSL tool into the Entity Framework extensions.  The same code generation and everything else work.  However, the visual design surface is so much easier to work with.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Also, please take a moment to look at the new project.  This is where all my effort going forward will be focused.   I'm interested in learning a stack-oriented programming language (such as Forth), which one would you recommend? The qualities I want are: You should be able to develop non-trivial software in it, but it mustn't be a great language for that as: I want to learn the language so I can try out a new paradigm (that is, not because I (think) that I will have great use of it). The reason I want to learn another paradigm is that I want to broaden my views on different approaches (learn to think in new ways, different from OOP, functional and structured). The language should let me do that (learn to think differently). The language should have available and good resources to learn from. The resources should also approach stack-oriented programming in a way that you understand the paradigm (after all, I do this for the paradigm).

To request a course you can register your demand for the course (i.e need for future events) via the Course Page: Click the "View Schedule" link on the page for either the Instructor-Led Training (ILT) or the Live Virtual Class (LVC) Then click the "register a request" link in the middle of the page towards the bottom. You can register the demand with details on the preference such as event date, region, location, etc. After which, respective schedulers in the region will be notified. The regional schedulers will then take the request forward.
