• My Windows 8 App in Windows Store

  Finally, you have a good reason to upgrade to Windows 8! My Brain Eaters app was just accepted into the Windows Store. Just in time for Halloween! The Brain Eaters app is a sample app from my soon to be released book Windows 8 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript. The game illustrates several important programming concepts which you need when building Windows 8 games with JavaScript such as using HTML5 Canvas and the new requestAnimationFrame() method. If you are looking for Halo or Call of Duty then you will be disappointed. If you are looking for PAC-MAN then you will be disappointed. I created the simplest arcade game that I could imagine so I could explain it in the book. All of the code for the game is included with the book. The goal of the game is to eat the food pellets while avoiding the zombies while running around a maze. Every time you get eaten by a zombie, you can hear my six year old son saying “Oh No!”. • Is it possible to to have all pre-unity effects in latest ubuntu?

  I've been an Ubuntu dilettante for a long, long time. It is not my primary OS but I've always had it on all my laptops and desktop machines for over 8 years now. What I really, really like(d) about ubuntu (or linux, for that matter) was the effects - desktop cube, wobbly windows and other such "cool" effects. Needless to say, I was heartbroken with Unity. I gave it the benefit of doubt and tried to like it, tried to love it. Stuck with it for over a year. But I recently came to the conclusion that unity is really not for me. I want my old ubuntu back, with all it's eye candy effects. I tried messing around with ccsm but it only seemed to make the matters worse. Now, I could just install the old version of ubuntu - but getting my bamboo pen and Nvidia to work with it is a son of a.. anyway, the point is, old version of ubuntu is outdated to work with my newer machines. I'd rather have a new version of ubuntu but without unity- I don't know what the eye candy stuff is called - and so my question is this - Is it possible to rid ubuntu of unity and get all the eye candy stuff and if it is not possible, can you please advice me what other linux supports all the effects, please? I've searched high and low for unity alternatives but didn't find any satisfactory solutions; so I think my question is mainly about what other linux flavour is better suited for the task - sorry if it is out of topic.

• Lubuntu 12.04 on Acer laptop boots to blank blue screen

  My previous question on this was closed, but I am posting it again as the solution which my son eventually found may assist other users of the forum, or someone may be able to tweak the solution to improve the performance. Having installed Kubuntu 12.04.01 from a live USB onto my desktop, I wanted to do the same on my laptop, an Acer Aspire 1362 Laptop, which has 256MB RAM (actually 512 "on the box", but a good deal can be borrowed by the graphics!). I found Kubuntu wouldn't run on so little memory but downloaded: Lubuntu-12.04-alternate-i386.iso, which I understood was light enough to go. The laptop has one internal 40GB Toshiba hard drive divided into 3 partitions: C,19GB with Windows XP, Windows program files and some data, D, 19GB mostly data, and a small 2GB partition with some Acer software, which XP can't normally “see”. I transferred most of the contents of D to a memory stick, leaving 16GB free for Lubuntu. I did not want to dump XP yet, though it is painfully slow. I installed Lubuntu from then USB stick, accepting the default answers to most of the questions. The D: partition was further partitioned into a 500MB boot partition, 10GB for Linux, 2GB Swap and 6GB for data shareable between Linux and Windows. I had no error messages during installation, rebooted, was offered the choice of Ubuntu or XP, and selected the former. After a few minutes, I get a dark blue screen announcing Lubuntu with five dots underneath which lighten in turn. Eventually the lights stopped, and whatever I try the screen remains blank apart from “Lubuntu” I tried several solutions suggested on the forum for “identical” questions but without success.

• ALPS touchpad stops working after reboot

  I recently upgraded to 12.04 LTS. My Compaq Presario CQ-40 324la touchpad worked after first restarting after installation. But after restarting a second time, the touchpad is completely disabled, without having changed anything in the system. I've tried solutions but haven't had good results. The applications I've installed (fro "solutions" are: Pointing Devices Synaptiks Dconf-Tools I've also tried updating GRUB, adding this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.nomux") I tried these commands in a terminal. Neither has worked. sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps El Touchpad ALPS se desactiva al reiniciar Recién he actualizado a Ubuntu 12.04LTS y a mi parecer ha mejorado mucho con respecto a 11.10... Pero ese no es mi punto ahora. El Touchpad funcionó correctamente luego del primer reinicio después de la instalación. Pero luego de volver a reiniciar, el Touchpad queda totalmente deshabilitado sin haber hecho cambio alguno en el sistema. He probado las soluciones en su mayoría y no he tenido buenos resultados. • Interview questions for programming tutor?

  My family is looking for a programming/computer science tutor. Personally, I want to learn Java or some other brand of web programming. I am best described as a PC "power user." I have never programmed in the past and would like a good jump start. I am a very quick learner and do not expect the tutor to have to teach me the ultra basic stuff that I can learn myself. My son also needs a programming tutor. He just got into Carnegie Mellon as a computer science major. Having done only robotics and mathematics in the past he is very nervous that he does not have the same level of knowledge as his future classmates. I need some help coming up with a list of questions to ask potential tutors and some criteria to judge them by. Thanks! Edit: So far I have come up with just the obvious... Where did you receive your education? What languages are you familiar with? How long have you been tutoring? What made you decide to become a tutor? What software projects have you worked on? What work references can you give me? How much do you charge?

• Graduating soon with a computer science degree, but have unique circumstances [closed]

  I joined the Navy in 1998, and was admitted into Nuclear Power Training. I got my electrician's mate certificate, but was put on medical hold when I was in Nuclear Power Training. I was sent to the Naval Hospital, and received a medical (honorable) discharge in the middle of 2000. I decided to stay at home and raise my son, and my girlfriend worked. a few years ago, I decided that I want to work as a programmer, so I went to college and will soon be graduating with a degree in computer science. I hope to finish with a relatively high GPA, 3.8 or 3.9. My question is this: How much, if any, of my Navy experience should I put on my resume? And how do I explain my nine year gap as a stay at home dad? Do I even try to explain it? I know recent college graduates typically have no experience, but obviously I'm not the typical college graduate. Will my long absence from working, or my relatively short duration in the Navy hurt my chances? Should I just put the college on my resume, and hope that HR thinks I'm younger than I am? Obviously, then, my age would show at the interview and there would be questions. Any help is appreciated.

• Ubunto 12.10 Boots to purple screen

  I know this question has been tackled in a couple different threads but I've tried what I could from those and have not resolved the issue. I have just a basic understanding of this system so feel free to talk down to me or explain this like you would to a 5 year old. Let's start from the beginning. My son has a computer built by an IT friend of mine (we moved so he can't help any more). It had Windows XP running on it and it just stopped working correctly. This same friend had built a laptop for me with Ubuntu which I liked so I thought I'd put a new OS on my sons computer and it may work better. I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 onto a USB drive and loaded it onto his computer. I followed all the prompts, it installed, I restarted the computer, it gives me the option of which OS to pick. I pick Ubuntu and it seemingly loads. The desktop comes up with just the basic pinkish Ubuntu background but that is it. There are no icons. I can't right click anywhere to create a file. Left clicking the mouse does not create a square when moved. Alt + F2 doesn't do anything. I can open a terminal but any of the commands I have seen in previous threads do not correct any issues. What else can I do, or what resources are available to fix this problem? I don't know if there are additional files on the USB drive that I need to access or what. Also, one of the problems we were having with my sons computer is that windows would only load to a blank screen. It runs accordingly in safemode and my install of Ubuntu was through safemode of Windows XP.

  My Kids and Ear Infection is becoming a weekly issue.  That is why I wanted to start this blog to talk about my experience and more important hear from other parents opinions and experience. Well, I will start with my twins, they are about 3yrs old.  started to go to day care about three months ago.  since they started with the daycare, they started getting exposed to germs and viruses and the ear infection started too.  every few weeks they have ear infection.  They take turns or some times they both get ear infection at the same time.  To be more accurate, one of them is more suseptive to the ear infection.  We ended up going through the specialest that suggested an ear tube operation and also remove the adenoid tissue.  His opinion was that will stop the fluid from staying in his inner ear and will eleminate the ear infedction.  To make the long story short for now.  the ear infection never stoped.  in addtion to the ear infection, now the tube is stuck and stoped working, the tube is moved and going to fall, as the doctor said.  the problems do not stop.  they keep adding up.  and now my second son is going to need ear tube if he gets ear infection again.  what should I do?

  I have following code with a RequiredFieldValidator. The EnableClientScript property is set as "false" in the validation control. Also I have disabled script in browser. I am NOT using Page.IsValid in code behind. Still, when I submit without any value in textbox I will get error message. From comments of @Dai, I came to know that this can be an issue, if there is any code in Page_Load that is executed in a postback. There will be no validation errors thrown. (However, for button click handler, there is no need to check Page.IsValid) if (Page.IsPostBack) { string value = txtEmpName.Text; txtEmpName.Text = value + "Appended"; } QUESTION Why the server side validation does not happen before Page_Load? Why it works fine when I use Page.IsValid? UPDATE It seems like, we need to add If(Page.IsValid) in button click also if we are using a Custom Validator with server side validation. I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. What do people use for this (Besides Red-Gate tools - I use those at my day job, and they rock...this is a volunteer thing for my son's school)?   I love this feature (well, my son loves it), and I would like to implement it in a kid's book app I am doing for iPhone, but I'm clueless where to begin. I'm using Cocos2d for all the animated sprite/transition stuff, but I'm not sure how to approach highlighting text as it is narrated. Example: "Jack and Jill, drank their fill, and were too drunk to go for water." As the text is narrated (.mp3 plays on each page), the text would be highlighted. I considered investigating Core animation, but I"m more familiar with Cocs2d at this point (tenuously at best). If someone has a clue, I'd really appreciate it. Brendang

  Hey, I am working with a cluster system over linux (www.mosix.org) that allows me to run jobs and have the system run them on different computers. Jobs are run like so: mosrun ls & This will naturally create the process and run it on the background, returning the process id, like so: [1] 29199 Later it will return. I am writing a Python infrastructure that would run jobs and control them. For that I want to run jobs using the mosrun program as above, and save the process ID of the spawned process (29199 in this case). This naturally cannot be done using os.system or commands.getoutput, as the printed ID is not what the process prints to output... Any clues? Edit: Since the python script is only meant to initially run the script, the scripts need to run longer than the python shell. I guess it means the mosrun process cannot be the script's "son process". Any suggestions? Thanks

• Is GOTO really as evil as we are led to believe?

  I'm a young programmer, so all my working life I've been told GOTO is evil, don't use it, if you do, your first born son will die. Recently, I've realized that GOTO actually still exists in .NET and I was wondering, is GOTO really as bad as they say, or is it just because everyone says you shouldn't use it, so that's why you don't. I know GOTO can be used badly, but are there any legit situations where you may possibly use it. The only thing I can think of is maybe to use GOTO to break out of a bunch of nested loops. I reckon that might be better then having to "break" out of each of them but because GOTO is supposedly always bad, I would never use it and it would probably never pass a peer review. What are your views? Is GOTO always bad? Can it sometimes be good? Has anyone here actually been gutsy enough to use GOTO for a real life system?

• Instalar SQL Server 2008

  En este post trataré de explicar los pasos para la instalación de SQL y su posterior configuración. Primer paso: Instalación de las reglas de Soporte (Setup Support Rules) Está será la primer pantalla de instalación con la que nos toparemos cuando tratemos de instalar sql server. En ella, únicamente debemos dar clic en siguiente(next). Paso 2: Selección de las características de instalación de SQL Server (Feature Selection) Este es a mi parecer el paso mas importante del proceso de instalación de SQL, pues es el que nos permitirá seleccionar todos los componentes que este tendrá posteriormente Acá lo importante es: Servicios de bases de datos y herramientas de administración. Todas las demás son plus del motor.   Paso 3: Configuración de la Instancia En este paso, no debemos preocuparnos por nada. Únicamente presionamos siguiente. Paso 4: Requerimientos de espacio en disco Nuevamente en esta instancia no tendremos trabajo alguno. Únicamente es una pantalla informativa de SQL en donde se muestra el espacio actual del disco y el espacio que la instalación de SQL Server consumirá. Presionamos siguiente (next). Paso 5: Configuración del servidor Este paso es uno de los mas importantes, pues en el le indicaremos a SQL que usuario utilizará para autenticarse y levantar cada uno de los servicios que hayamos seleccionado al inicio. Generalmente cuando se trabaja en local el usuario NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM es la mejor opción. Si en este paso, seleccionamos un usuario con permisos insuficientes SQL nos dará un error. Presionamos siguiente (next) Paso 6: Configuración del motor de bases de datos En este paso, nos enfocaremos en la pestaña Account Provisioning, que será en la que le indiquemos el usuario con el que el motor de bases de datos funcionará por defecto. Lo mas recomendado sería hacer clic en la opción add current user, la cual agregará el usuario de windows  que se encuentre en ese momento. También, podremos seleccionar si queremos el modo de autenticación de SQL o el modo Mixto, que incluye autenticación de SQL Server y Windows. Para nuestra instalación seleccionaremos unicamente modo de autenticación de SQL. Una vez que agregamos el usuario presionamos siguiente (next) Paso 7:  Finalizar la configuración Luego de los pasos anteriores, las demás pantallas no requieren nada especial. Únicamente presionar siguiente y esperar a que la instalación de SQL termine.
