• Enabling and Disabling components in Unity

  I'm trying to create an enable/ disable game objects in Unity. I used GameObject.SetActiveRecursively but it only works one-way. I used a collider in which when an object enters the collider. The game objects become enabled. When they leave or get to a certain point, they disable. How would I make this a two way system, making it able to be enabled while inside the collider and disabled when outside the collider? -- The collider is in the game object who is being disabled and enabled. According to this information from Unity Answers, the object becomes disabled. So how would I make the object enabled?

  I have decided, as a arrogant geek, to build my own home ventilation and heating system, and will try to do this as my little project. I have always been annoyed with the lack of good ventilation systems at work, so I accept building my own is arrogant. Does anyone know about a device I can interact with that allows me to get temperature and humidity that I can interact with using C#? I cannot get it from the Internet because I need to get the humidity from my server "room", so I can control the dehumidifier there. Similar with temperature, outside is not that important. It would be a huge plus if the sensors had some sort of wireless access.

• Where can I find crash course in Java eclipse in Vancouver?

  I am not satisfied with what I learned in Java 101 in University. I feel like, lot of time is spent on trying to figure out how to write something in Java properly. I feel like, my lack of knowledge of Java and eclipse is slowing me down. I would like to pay for a detailed and intensive course in Java & Eclipse. I can read a book and read tutorials, but it seems harder to discipline myself. Where can I find such crash courses outside of university courses? I find lot of CS courses just show tip of the iceberg and not too much focused on actual application. I want to learn the latest industry skills and etc. I live in BC, Canada. I am thinking of BCIT, but not sure what they offer.

• XNA 2D Rotated Rectangle Collision Response

  I am using Rotated Rectangles which collide using the Separating Axis Theorem and they work perfectly fine for collision detection using Intersects and Contains. However, I am starting to use faster objects in my game now and there is the issue of the two object overlapping during collision due to their higher velocities. I would like to do a collision response where I find out how much they are overlapping in the X and Y and put position them outside of each other. I would like to use something like this: http://go.colorize.net/xna/2d_collision_response_xna/index.html. But I am having some issues trying to adapt this to handle the rotation of the bounds. Is this possible? Are there any resources out there that I can look at?

• Restricted pathfinding Area

  So i'm triying to create a little "XCOM : Enemy Unknown" like game ,and using the Aron Granberg's Pathfinding-Tool (free version) to handle the "click to move part. i want to add a little trap system where the hero get stuck inside an area, so he will have only the possibility to move inside this trapped area, so far everything is fine however when i click outside the trapped area, the hero try to reach the destination even though the wall will prevents him from reaching it. so my question is, is there any way to restrict the area where the pathfinding system work to the trapped area dynamically. and wich Graph Type is recommended to use in this situation or this kind of Games (Grid Graph/Navmesh Graph/Point Graph). I don't get a lot of opportunities to learn at my organization since we primarily support existing systems and just fix issues arising on a day to day basis, We are not expected by the parent company to develop solutions from scratch. I aspire to become an Architect. Please guide me how should I plan to acquire the required skills and Knowledge esp since my company doesn't provide me with the right opportunities. • Flikering line on top of display

  I just bought a new Dell Inspiron pre-installed with Ubuntu 11.10. All was fine until I updated the OS. Since then, I have this flickering line at the top of my screen and it won't go after rebooting or changing the screen resolution. It gets really annoying. I don't know which update did this. I tried reinstalling the image from Dell, and it worked fine until I applied the updates. I tried to take a screen shot but it does not show. The line seems to be outside the desktop area. Help please... Thanks!

• Mimicking a bluetooth disconnection

  I've written a program to control a bluetooth device. I'm trying to test cases when the bluetooth disconnects, i.e. if its out of range. Physically taking the device out of range is one possibility, but its quite cumbersome and I have to go outside my office to achieve this. What can I do to trigger a disconnection? Is there, for example, an interferer I can setup, say with an Android phone, that would make the connection drop? Or limit the Bluetooth transmit power? Any other possibilities?

• 301 redirect from a country specific domain

  I originally started using a .do domain extension for my site, but later realized that this country specific domain would prevent us from appearing in search results for places outside of the Dominican Republic. We started using a .co domain extension and redirected all requests to the new domain using an HTTP 301. The "Crawl Stats" in Google Webmaster Tools shows me that the .co domain is being crawled, but the "Index Status" shows the number of pages indexed at 0. The "Crawl Stats" for the .do domain says that it's being crawled and the "Index Status" shows a number greater than 0. I also set a "Change Of Address" in Google Webmaster Tools to have the .do domain point to the new .co domain. We're still not appearing in search results at all even for very specific strings where I would expect to find us. Am I doing something wrong?

• possible to use an IP derived from Dynamic DNS in htaccess IP allow/deny commands?

  On a website I manage, I want to use an .htaccess file to allow access to a certain administrative directory only from my home IP address, which is dynamically assigned by my ISP and therefore changes -- not regularly, but it does happen. I also have an account from DynDNS and have one of the auto-update clients making sure it always points to my actual home IP address. I don't actually host anything at home; I just have set up the Dynamic DNS account. Is there any way to combine these features: that is, is it possible write the .htaccess allow/deny commands at my outside webhost in a way that my home IP address is not hard coded into the command, but instead is somehow derived from the Domain Name that the DynDNS has assigned me, by doing a real-time lookup every time the directory's .htaccess file is hit? • Getting trayer to work with dual screen setup

  I'm using XMonad as my window manager, and want to use trayer as a icon panel for things like nm-applet. The problem was that the panel wouldn't appear on the top of the screen. If I set it to the bottom it just appeared. After a lot of trying, I found out it is because my xorg.conf is setup for dualscreens, and probably the trayer panel is spawned outside my view (I currently have only a single screen, but I switch a lot). After manualy tweaking the xorg.conf file to allow for just one screen, the panel appears on the right spot. • How do developers find the time to stay on top of latest technologies?

  I was a freelance web developer until circa 2004 when I started going down the management route but have decided to try to get back into development again (specifically JavaScript and HTML5 web/mobile web apps) and I really get the impression to be truly good at these and similar fast moving technologies a constant amount of time is required to be set aside to invest in getting better at existing skills in addition to learning new skills. I understand right now since I am getting back into things there is a pretty steep learning curve, but seeing how good many guys are out there - the only way I see of getting up there is putting in a serious amount of time. For those working as fulltime developers, what I am trying to understand is this - on most days, how much time in the office is spent actually grinding out code compared to learning/research. I could easily spend 2-4 hours daily getting on top of the best ways to go about doing things. Do most good developers who are employed full time invest significant hours outside of work sharpening their skills? Or maybe I'm looking at all of this completely wrong?

• Resolving equivalence relations

  I am writing a function to label the connected component in an image (I know there are several libraries outside, I just wanted to play with the algorithm). To do this I label the connected regions with different labels and create an equivalence table that contain information on the labels belonging to the same connected component. As an example if my equivalence table (vector of vector) looks something like: 1: 1,3 2: 2,3 3: 1,2,3 4: 4 It means that in the image there are 2 different regions, one made of elements that are labelled 1,2,3 and an other made of elements labelled 4. What is an easy and efficient way to resolve the equivalences and end up with something that looks like: 1: 1,2,3 2: 4 that I can use to "merge" the different connected regions belonging to the same connected component? • Is there any way to determine who placed an AdWords ad?

  I was in the process of discussing with a client using adwords for their next step of promotion and no-one at the company was aware of the system, and certainly hadn't created any adwords campaigns, however in the midst of the discussion and trying a few relevant search queries out, one of the ads in the ad block on the right hand pane was for their website. Is there any way of determining if the ad was somehow generated of is it definitely the case that someone had to consciously take the ad out and if so who might have placed it? They have no referral system so someone outside of the company would get no benefit from running the ad

• How can I pull data from PeopleSoft on demand?

  I work in IT at a university and I'm working with about 5 different departments to develop a new process for students to apply to a specific school within the university (not the university as a whole). We're using a web-based college application vendor and adding the applicant questions for the school itself to the main university application. Currently the main application feeds into PeopleSoft. The IT staff here is building a new table to hold just our school's applicant data. I want to be able to access that data from PeopleSoft for use in external applications, but our IT staff doesn't really seem to understand what I'm requesting, as they simply tell me I can have access to the PS query tools. The problem is, I don't want to run just ad hoc queries, I want to be able to connect from outside PeopleSoft and show current data within the external app. I am unable to find documentation or get a clear answer to my question. Does PeopleSoft support access via a web services API or anything similar, and does that sound like the right direction for me to take?

• How much time do you need in between large projects?

  You've launched a large project at work, something that's been in progress and taken up large chunks of your life for more than 6 months. The post-launch triage is over. Tech support isn't calling you every hour because they don't know how to troubleshoot an issue. Your hours drop from 60+/wk to whatever is normal in your organization (which is hopefully less than 60+!). How much time do you (or your team) need before the next large project begins? I was asked this question at work and I think the ideal minimum is two weeks -- one week to clear your desk and inbox + one week to clear your head and remember what it's like to have a life outside of work. I'd frankly acknowledge that just being asked this question is a huge boon to work/life balance. But I do think it's possible to go too long in between.

• Programming languages with extensible syntax

  I have only a limited knowledge of Lisp (trying to learn a bit in my free time) but as far as I understand Lisp macros allow to introduce new language constructs and syntax by describing them in Lisp itself. This means that a new construct can be added as a library, without changing the Lisp compiler / interpreter. This approach is very different from that of other programming languages. E.g., if I wanted to extend Pascal with a new kind of loop or some particular idiom I would have to extend the syntax and semantics of the language and then implement that new feature in the compiler. Are there other programming languages outside the Lisp family (i.e. apart from Common Lisp, Scheme, Clojure (?), Racket (?), etc) that offer a similar possibility to extend the language within the language itself?

• Dropbox and IIS

  I'm running into the problem of using Dropbox and IIS. I am using the Dropbox Folder Sync plugin to sync a folder outside the Dropbox folder. They are synced into my inetpub\root\downloads\ directory. The problem is not that it doesn't sync. The problem is that the files that get synced have no permissions attached to them. I can't open any of them on IIS. Initially the downloads were to be only PDFs but they don't open so I tried an .ASPX file and it fails to load as well. Is there any way around this or another program I can use to sync files but allow them to be opened on an IIS server. Thanks for any help!

• mysql questions for beginners

  ok, I have a few questions regarding mysql. I am currently running ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS command line version. I am looking for a database that I can use. I am confused at this point because I am uninformed. mysql is just one database that is on the server? or can it contain several or many databases What programs do I use to access it on the server or is it a vt-100 type access? I understand that mysql comes with lamp? or ubuntu. I am thinking that it is already installed but not sure how to access it, but that is another question for later. Outside of the man pages and the ubuntu manual, is there a site for its setup and use? Thanks!

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 4 answers I am currently developing a site using laravel 4. I had intended on using Pagodabox for my hosting needs, however I now realize that they don't have servers outside of the US. So I'm just looking for some advice or recommendations? Can I still use Pagodabox with CloudFlare? Or would I be better of to use a provider with dedicated servers in Dublin? Such as Amazon bean stock. Any help greatly appreciated.

• XNA 4.0 - container with content, that can slide (C#)

  I got an idea, but I got no idea on how to make it. Okay, so here is the deal. I want a container which can contain certain objects (These objects will draw the sprites/graphics). But because of different screen sizes, I want to be able to scale the containers width and height. But I do not want the objects in the container, that go outside of the container, because of the scaling to be visible. Because I want the objects all to be positioned horizontaly to eachother and I want a horizontal sliderbar, so I can slide from left to right within the container. I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thanks in Advance, Mark
