• Color Calibrate Dual Monitor XP SP2

  This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

• Toshiba Tecra A8 display resizes to 4:3 when an External display is used

  I am very new to this so please excuse me if the solution is simple. I am running an old Toshiba Tecra A8 laptop and the screen is fine until I attach an external monitor via VGA then the laptops monitor resizes itself and changes ratios to 3:4 is there a fix for this or am I out of luck? As additional information: I have tried 3 or 4 different monitors and it happens with all of them, except that the external monitors hold the 3:4 display ration but get stretched out. Feel free to add comments requesting more information if needed for a fix.

• winkey + arrow key doesn't move windows to 2nd monitor on linux

  in Windows, win+ <-- and win+ --> snap any window to the left/right side of a monitor, and if pressed again, snap the window to the other monitor, in multi-monitor environment. when a window is maximized, it will "restore" the window first, and at the next win+ <-- key the window will snap. this is very easy to use and remember. But on Linux a maximized window is not affected by win+ <-- , and the user must explicitly un-maximize it (win+down. the window is not moved to another monitor a side-snapped window cannot be resized - it behaves like a maximized window. is there another program that behaves like Windows, or I should write one by myself? (i'm using ubuntu/mint)

• Independent Research on 1500 Companies Reveals Challenges in Performance Visibility – Part 1

  At the end of May I was joined by Professor Andy Neely of Cambridge University on a webinar, with an audience of over 700, to discuss the results of this extensive study which covered 13 countries and nearly every commercial and industrial sector.  What stunned both of us was not so much the number listening but the 100 questions they asked in just 1 hour.  This certainly represents a record in my experience and for those that organized the webinar. So what was all the fuss about?  Well, to begin with this was a pretty big sample and it represented organizations with over $100m sales across the USA, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. It also delivered some pretty interesting results across a wide range of EPM subjects such as profitability, planning and reporting.  Let’s look at some of those findings. We kicked off with profitability, one of the key factors in driving performance, or that is what you would think, but in fact 82% of our respondents said they did not have complete visibility into the profitability of their organization. 91% of these went further to say that, not surprisingly, this lack of knowledge into the profitability has implications with over half citing 3 or more implications.  Implications cited included misallocated resources, revenue opportunities not maximized, erroneous decisions made and impaired financial performance.  Quite a list of implications, especially given the difficult economic circumstances many organizations are operating in at this time. So why is this?  Well other results in the study point to some of the potential reasons.  Firstly 59% of respondents that use spreadsheets use them for monitoring profitability and 93% of all managers responding to the study use spreadsheets to gather and analyze information.  This is an enormous proportion given the problems with using spreadsheets based performance management systems that have been widely talked about for many years.  For profitability analysis this is particularly important when you consider the typical requirement will be to allocate cost and revenue across 6+ dimensions based on many different allocation methods.  Not something that can be done easily in spreadsheets plus it gets to be a nightmare once you want to change allocations, run different scenarios and then change the basis of your planning and budgeting! It is no wonder so many organizations have challenges in performance visibility. • No HDMI output on 12.10, Intel HD graphics (Ironlake)

  I am unable to get any output to my external monitor on 12.10. The monitor is recognized and shows the native res (1920x1080, correct) but enabling has no effect. Graphics chipset is Intel Ironlake (Arrandale). I have tried: Full system update after installing Oibaf PPA updated drivers (https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers) Enabling SNA Kubuntu 12.10 (in addition to Ubuntu 12.10) Both were fresh installs. Nothing works, any troubleshooting ideas? Everything is fine on 11.10. UPDATE 1: Also tried using Intel drivers from Xorg-Edgers PPA (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) Still no output on HDMI.

• xrandr shows VGA1 as disconnected

  I have a Thinkpad W520 with Nvidia Optimus graphics. I have disabled the Nvidia card in BIOS (by selecting "integrated graphics"), so I'm running only on the integrated Intel graphics. I get full 3D acceleration, which would suggest the drivers are properly installed. However, I'm not able to use an external monitor. With the external monitor connected and turned on, running xrandr always gives: $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192 LVDS1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm 1920x1080 60.0*+ 59.9 50.0 1680x1050 60.0 59.9 1600x1024 60.2 1400x1050 60.0 1280x1024 60.0 1440x900 59.9 1280x960 60.0 1360x768 59.8 60.0 1152x864 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) What gives? It sees the VGA1 port (to which the external display is connected), but it appears disconnected. I have tried forcing a resolution as per these instructions, but when I do that X becomes unresponsive and I have to Ctrl-Alt-F1 and restart it.

• Both screens always stay on after adding second monitor

  I had a single 1920x1080 monitor on a Windows 7 desktop PC and, per "power management" (not screen saver), the screen would go blank after 10 minutes. I added another monitor (2560x1600 if that matters) and since then, neither screen has ever blanked. I've tried turning on the "blank" screen saver, but that didn't help either -- I can go away for hours and when I come back, both screens are on. I've seen others with similar issues apparently caused by e.g. wireless mice that seem to move infinitesimally, but I've got the same wired mouse I had before. I can't understand why neither the screen saver nor power management is doing what it should to blank the screens, when "power management" used to do it when there was only one monitor. Maybe it doesn't matter so much with current LCD display technology (no "burn in") but doesn't a monitor use more power when "power management" hasn't turned off the display? Thanks for any suggestions.

• Dell L501X Display Port Screen issue

  I got a Dell XPS L501X with a mini display port to VGA connector for my External Screen. On Displays it shows me: Acer Technologies 24" (which is the monitor) but only lets me up to 1024x768 resolution (The native resolution of this monitor is 1920x1200). I tried adding a new mode with xrandr, but when I applied it, it reverted back to 1024x768. As far as I know, the display port is controlled by the Intel card, right? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Using Ubuntu 11.10 32bit

• Third monitor with AMD cards WITHOUT Eyefinity

  I have two AMD Radeon HD 6870 video cards in CrossFireX configuration and I would like to add a third monitor. I understand to use "Eyefinity" you need to use an active mini displayport to DVI adapter. I am not interested in the benefits of "Eyefinity", I just want a third monitor with Windows extended desktop. Is it possible to use either the HDMI head on the first card or the DVI heads from the second card to get a third monitor running without "Eyefinity" and an active adapter?

For best performance, especially time to open the solution and compiling time, would it be better to install VS 2010 on the SSD or install it on the HDD. If both were on the SSD, loading the VS 2010 files would be quicker, but there would be contention between loading the source and the program files. Thanks!

• Improve backup performance by watching files added/modified in given directories?

  I use SyncbackSE on Windows to back up files between two hard drives daily. Every time the application starts, it scans every single file in the directories that it watches before copying files that were added or modified. To improve performance, I was wondering if there were a Windows backup application that would hook into Windows to keep tracks of files that were added/modified in given directories, so that it only needs to go through this list when it comes time for a backup. • Automatically change resolution when not in dock

  I have Ubuntu 11.04 (yep, I know it's old news) on my Lenovo W520. At home, I have a dock with dual monitors. I have a pretty decent setup - things work almost perfectly (hence the reason I'm reluctant to upgrade... that and I'm not 100% sold on Unity). Anyway, the only annoyance I have is that when I'm on travel, I use the laptop screen. When I un-dock the laptop, I need to manually go into nvidia x-server settings and change the resolution from 'Auto' to 1920x1200, or it will think I have two screens, and my mouse pointer will be able to go way off the left side of the screen. This isn't a big deal, but I need to do it every time I restart the x-server (so if I reboot, or have to kill it, etc...) What would be really nice is if there was a way for it to automatically detect whether or not there is external monitors (which it seems to do already), and switch into the mode I select, depending on which monitors are connected. Is there any way to accomplish this?   OS: Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Microsoft Windows 7 My laptop is plugged to a docking station that supports dual monitors, which I use extensively. I have windows placed where I want them. All is well and predictable with this setup until I un-dock. The moment I un-dock all windows that I placed in the secondary monitor piles up in the primary monitor and it is an unholy mess. So, I am looking for a solution where if I use virtual desktops, one of them can be mapped to a monitor and when un-docked what was there in the secondary monitor stays in a virtual desktop. Do you folks know of a tool or workaround that can address my quandary?
