• For virtual machines, when SMP is available on the host, should guest also have SMP setup?

  I'm trying to find out the best "bang for my buck" so to speak in regards to virtual machines, and SMP. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo, which of course has two cores and the VT extensions, and I'm running Ubuntu Linux (host) on it with VirtualBox, which has Windows Vista (guest). Currently I've got the guest machine setup for two processors to give Windows a chance to manage its own parallelism, but I'm not certain that it's any faster. I've tried it with just one processor, but it's hard to tell if it's any better. Any thoughts? Should the guest have two processors setup?

• Intel Xeon vt-d query

  Does Xeon westmere ep (xeon 56xx series) have vt-d (=iommy / direct io) or does intel TXT (Intel® Trusted Execution Technology) include vt-d? I'm at a loss. I've been researching current processors for an important project for some time now. I need to know, if the xeon 5600s (Westmere EP) include vt-d (iommu/directed io/pci passing) because the system will run virtualized guests. This enables direct hardware access eg. pci passthrough, in xen for example. It seems that the 5600s TXT should incorporate vt-d and that xeon 5600s should include vt-d as they are ramped up 5500s, but there is no conclusive answer anywhere. Intel's processor comparison only states that 5500s have vt-d and no TXT and 5600s have no vt-d but TXT. I'd be really grateful if anybody could clear this up and possibly even provide a citation.   I have a 64-bit processor in my PC, but because of worries over application compatibility, up until now I have been using 32-bit Ubuntu (and 32-bit Vista because Dell wouldn't sell me 64-bit with my PC). Is it possible for me to install 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit ubuntu and 32-bit Windows Vista, so I can choose between them at boot and share data, and without uninstalling my 32-bit Ubuntu? My partitions are as follows Drive 1: 10 GB Vista recovery partition (E:), 240 GB Windows NTFS parition (230 GB used, C:). Drive 2: 167 GB Windows NTFS Partition (130 GB used, D: ), 8 GB swap partition, 13 GB / partition (6 GB used), 62 GB /home partition (20 GB used).

  Something I have been puzzled about is this: how exactly does a computer regulate and tell time? For example: if I were to write a program that did this: Do 2+2 then wait 5 seconds How does the processor know what "5 seconds" is? How is time measured in computer systems? • ATI radeon hd 5450 Graphics Card Issues

  I have an Old Dell Optiplex 755 SFF with an Intel Core 2 Processor (windows 7). Now This can hold a PCI-E x16 port. Now I got an ATI Radeon HD 5450 low profile. I plugged and played and it fits without a hitch, the software installed too! , now for the graphics well... It doesn't really work at all as it seems to freeze at the moment that it loads on the windows logo. It loads into safe mode so I'm not really sure what the problem is. Any ideas, I read the dell forums and they should be somewhat compatible... with the specs so I'm at a loss here. and I am a novice here. Ideas? Edit I have tried to reset the cmos,no luck there. I have tried to move the ram as well. nothing big happened.

• Which is better for running Ubuntu and other Linux OSes, Chromebook or Windows, why? [on hold]

  I'm learning programming and I would like to switch to a Linux OS, perhaps Ubuntu, to continue this, but the current machine is generally getting pretty old and slow and Windows is the least favorite option for production, and I can manage getting something new right around the price range of the nicest Chromebook on the market right now. However, I have compared specs of HP Chromebook 14 with those of regular PC laptops that roughly cost the same, and the latter consistently have approximately the same and sometimes higher (like the processor speed) specs. Yet usage of Chromebooks for this purpose is pretty widespread nowadays. Is this because they were initially built for a Linux OS - and is it really THAT crucial - or are there other major factors at play here?

  I've heard that NTFS compression can reduce performance due to extra CPU usage, but I've read reports that it may actually increase performance because of reduced disk reads. How exactly does NTFS compression affect system performance? Notes: I'm running a laptop with a 5400 RPM hard drive, and many of the things I do on it are I/O bound. The processor is a AMD Phenom II with four cores running at 2.0 GHz. The system is defragmented regularly using UltraDefrag. The workload is mixed read-write, with reads occurring somewhat more often than writes. The files to be compressed include personal documents and selected programs, including several (less demanding) games and Visual Studio (which tends to be I/O bound more often than not).

• How to fix steam issues when playing games

  So I got call of duty black Ops on my PC (Windows 7, 64bit, 8gig ram, 3.0ghz processor) but when I want to start the game I get this error message. Steam must be running to play this game. I did a quick Google search for what steam was and it turns out its a game software technology for copy protection, patents, game-play and this like that. I don't know how to fix this. I have tried reinstalling over and over but no success at all. Is it like direct X you could just download and install or what...Any ideas will be GREATLY appreciated.

• Windows Media Player library not appearing properly

  Windows Media Player library is listed 80% under unknown artist/unknown album despite each song containing the album and artist details. The library location is usually unresponsive and Media Player 12 is usually hanging for 3 or 4 minutes every 5 or 6 minutes. Library was fine two weeks ago then I had updated and it has not worked right since. My PC specifics: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit 8 GB ram Processor 3.76 Ghz Primary drive 1Tb Secondary drive 500Gb Default save for the library is on the secondary drive. I've already tried media player settings troubleshooter and the library troubleshooter to no avail.

• Computer is totally crashed

  my computer kept restarting on its own at random times varying from 1 minutes, to 20 minutes(then goind in a constant restart loop every ~10 seconds). I had to turn it off and wait minutes or hours before attempting to restarting to go further in the boot process. Now, it just does not turn on. I posted this before: Computer crashes every 2 to 10 minutes but I did not have the time to check the temperature. I don't want to pay to get it checked up, but I want to know what is wrong. • 1 TB hdd and no space to create a partition for linux !

  I have a brand new Acer aspire 5811 with core i5 processor and all that. There is windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed on it. I want to install arch and setup a dual boot system. The problem is: Windows shows 4 partitions 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 But GpartedLive cd and also arch setup show 5 partitions 938Kb UNKOWN system reserved partition 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB unusable space Because of this, I cannot create another primary partition. Can any body guide me about how should I go for creating partition for installing arch ? Note: I need to keep windows 7 working. regards.

• Fedora Installation with software repository in DVD does not work

  I bought a new assembled PC with processor as Core-i3(2120) and Intel H61 motherboard and was trying to install Fedora 16 from a DVD. This DVD contains all the packages so that installation does not require to download packages from internet. I have used this DVD to install Fedora 16 offline many a times though in machines with different hardware configuration. But in this new machine when the installation reaches the stage wherein it asks for Software repository selection I select CD/DVD but the system fails to read the media and throws up an error that it cannot detect the media. THe LED in the DVD writer also indicate that the DVD is not being read. Now there is neither a problem with the DVD or the DVD drive because the installation started from the DVD itself. So what could the problem be, anything in the BIOS that is causing the problem, Is there any way I could utilize the packages already existing in the CD so that I save downloading the packages from DVD

• Virtualized CPU cores vs. threads

  We've got a KVM host system on Ubuntu 9.10 with a newer Quad-core Xeon CPU with hyperthreading. As detailed on Intel's product page, the processor has 4 cores but 8 threads. /proc/cpuinfo and htop both list 8 processors, though each one states 4 cores in cpuinfo. KVM/QEMU also reports 8 VCPUs available to assign to guests. My question is when I'm allocating VCPUs to VM guests, should I allocate per-core or per-thread? Since KVM/QEMU reports the server has 8 VCPUs to allocate, should I go ahead and set a guest to use 4 CPUs where I previously would have set it to use 2 (assuming 4 total VCPUs available)? I'd like to get the most possible out of the host hardware without over-allocating.

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this?   I've installed Microsoft's Virtual PC on Windows 7, but when I try to start a virtual machine I get the following error message: '<Virtual machine name' could not be started because hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled. Please enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS settings and try again. If hardware virtualization settings is already enabled, you may have to disable Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) setting in BIOS or update the system BIOS. However, if I download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool, it gives the following positive message: This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization. This computer meets the processor requirements to run Windows Virtual PC. If this computer runs a supported edition of Windows® 7, you can install Windows Virtual PC. I've also used the MSR Walker in the third-party utility CrystalCPUID to examine MSR 0x3a on both processors on my system, and it's 0x5 (0x4 = VT enabled, 0x1 = VT lock), as expected. Does anyone have any ideas of what else to check? Thanks.

Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality. • How to enable Hardware-assisted decoding in Ubuntu 9.10, specifically for Totem and/or Gnome MPlayer

  Hi all, just wanted to ask about Hardware-assisted 720p video playback on an Intel Atom D510 machine, running on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. When I use Boxee with Hardware Assisted Decoding activated, I am able to play 720p videos -- whether on the local harddisk drive or on a remote server, through LAN. However when I play the same 720p videos through Totem or through Gnome MPlayer, the resulting playback suffers from stuttering and slideshow-like slowdowns. Would it be possible to make 720p video playback on Totem and Gnome MPlayer more smooth given that my machine's processor in the Intel Atom D510? If yes, how? Boxee seems to manage, so I assume it should also be possible to tweak Totem and/or Gnome MPlayer to be able to do the same. As an added note, I the machine's OS is Linux Mint 8. Installed RAM is 2GB.

• Offloading Cable Modem operations to Router

  I may be crazy here, but I seem to recall a conversation in the past stating that it was possible to offload some of the operations taken by one's cable modem to one's router. The logic was that since the cable modem is often equipped with a cheaper processor as it is supplied by your provider, that it often chokes even crashes when you start a torrent or something else with a lot of connections. I seem to recall that some routers offered the ability to take some of the modem's operations. Is this possible or have I imagined the whole thing? I ask because my modem seems to have many issues when I start torrents.

  Hello- I have an Apple XServe G5, running OS X Server 10.4. I want to update my Apache installation from 1.3 to 2 and PHP to 5. I also want to install PHP GD support. I have scoured the internet for a guide on how to do this, but to no avail. I also tried to use Entropy to install PHP 5 several times, and it always manages to royally mess up my system. Obviously I can't install Leopard or Snow Leopard because it is a PowerPC processor. Can anyone give me any tips on how to get this software updated or point me to a guide? Thanks, Chris

• 256 SSD / 2TB Internal drive, i7, 16GB RAM.. explorer.exe still slow

  OK, so I just got done tweaking my brand new PC and explorer.exe still manages to be sluggish not as snappy as I'd like or expected at all. Specs are i7 4th gen processor, 16GB RAM, windows 7 64 home premium on 256GB SSD, secondary internal 2TB drive. I assumed system would be lightning fast, been doing a bunch of researching and switched out a lot of different settings including enabling/disabling indexing, turning pagefile on/off or placing it on separate drive, turning folder optimization options on/off.. changes have been minimal or none at all. Any further advice or anything I might be missing, besides a new/repair install? PC is literally 3 days old I don't feel like I need a new install at all

• Can I monitor active user count on my iis sites?

  We are having problems with performance on our server that host our websites that the processor gets upp to 90%. I would like to monitor the amount of users active on your sites that are published on the iis. My question, is this possible? is there any software for this? EDIT current (like this second) visitor count on all the active websites on our iis REASON FOR THIS if i can get the visitor amount on the days the CPU is not overloaded and and compare it to the days it is then i atleast know that this CAN be a reason why this is happening and i can take it from there. Otherwise i can focus on the code on the sites, or maybe google crawler is causing this, there are manythings that can cause this you know? for me this is just a simple way of troubleshooting.

• NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s) on Ubuntu

  When copying large files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12-15MB/s on drives using the NTFS filesystem. I tested multiple drives (all connected using SATA) which all got writespeeds of 100MB/s+ on Windows or when formatted with ext4, so it's not an alignment or drive issue. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. AMD dual core processor (2.2 GHz) Kernel version: 3.5.0-23-generic Ubuntu 12.04 ntfs-3g version: both 2012.1.15AR.1 (Ubuntu default version) and 2013.1.13AR.2 How can I fix the writespeed?

• What does the "Maximum Frequency" number mean in the Windows Resource Monitor?

  In the Windows Resource Monitor's CPU tab, there is a status box and graph for the "Maximum Frequency", right next to the "CPU Usage" values. What does this mean? The value is sometimes over 100% on my system... what could that imply? By looking at CPU-z's real-time report of the processor's clock speed, it seems to be loosely related to what frequency the CPU is running at, which would imply that it means "percent of maximum possible frequency the CPU is running at"; this would be of relevance on systems with SpeedStep and/or TurboBoost technology (or similar). Furthermore, setting the system to "power saving mode" lowers the "maximum frequency" value to around 60%, while setting it to "high performance" mode sets it to around 110%. However, the percentage does not seem to exactly correlate to the CPU speed being shown. What value is this actually representing then?
