• laptop suddenly became very slow

  I have a compaq laptop. And I've been using it 2 years now. Then this day, it suddenly became very slow. It almost took 5 minutes from turning on to the log on screen. I click my username and it took 3 minutes to show the desktop. I click on my computer then properties to see if it is still showing 2 Ghz for the Core 2 duo processor. And 2gb for the memory. It took 10 minutes for all the information to show up. And its still 2gb and 2Ghz. So I may conclude that this is not a problem in memory or cpu. Its still running perfectly last night. And I have not seen signs of it failing. Things I already tried: Rebooting Shutdown then turn on again So how do I determine what causes this problem? How do I fix it?

  I am considering using Apache 32-bit for a Moodle installation on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit/16GB server. Since the available memory affects the number of concurrent of users that can be served, I was wondering how the 2GB memory limit on 32-bit Windows processes affects Apache+PHP. Is it a collective limit for the whole server, or is it applied separately for each Apache child process/thread? If it is separate, how many of those children are launched on Windows? One per request? One per processor core? Something in the middle? Is this somehow configurable?

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now. • cygwin rsync over ssh very slow

  I have 2 machines running Windows Xp SP3. I have cygwin installed on both, version 1.7. I have rsync and ssh installed on both, and configured using default settings as per ssh-host-config and ssh-user-config programs provided. I moved the public keys into their respective locations, and basically ssh is working fine. i began an rsync operation, using: rsync -av --delete --hard-links local_dir username@other_machine:/some_dir well... on both machines, the processor is running near idle, no heavy usage. I checked IO using process explorer on both machines, and that too is at normal levels (1~2 MB/s), so I can't see where the bottlenecks are, because network performance is aweful. I'm not going over 1MB/s... when a normal file copy using windows sharing achieves some ~10 MB/s.. What could be wrong?

• SATA controller installed but not working? (No drives show up/Don't see card's BIOS)

  Hi, I have an old Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 SATA controller card. I put it in an old machine running Windows Server 2003. I booted the machine. The new hardware was detected. I installed the drivers. So now in Device Manager under "SCSI and RAID Controllers" I see "Win Server 2003 Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 Controller" and "Win Server 2003 Promise RAID Console SCSI Processor Device" I previously had the card in a machine that is now dead. When I booted that machine, during the boot process I would see the card info displayed and the drives that were attached. Boot would finish and my drives would be available. When I boot this new machine I never see that screen/text. No hard drives are available/visible. What am I missing? Thanks.

• Asus laptop not retaining Aero theme when unplugged

  The problem i'm having occurs when i unplug my laptop, it disregards several elements of my theme. The taskbar becomes unlocked. My desktop background is turned white. The transparency on my windows goes away. I can fix these things by running the Aero trouble shooting utility, which mentions something about the color bit depth These are these specs for the computer: Asus Laptop / Intel® Pentium® Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory Model: X54H-BD3MA SKU: 4005394 I'm sure there are duplicates of this, just not sure whick one refers to me. • Why does the CPU usage reach 100% when laptop is plugged in?

  I have an HP Elitebook 8440p with Windows 7 Ultimate, i7 Processor and 8 GB RAM. For the last couple of days, when I plug-in my laptop for charging, the CPU usage shoots up to 100% and remains there for around 15 minutes. No offending process shows up in Task Manager/Process Explorer but the laptop is practically unusable for that time. The CPU usage becomes normal when I remove the power cord but shoots up again when plugged back. This is happening with different power adapters/wall sockets so it might not be a faulty adapter issue. Why is this happening and any pointer to resolve this issue?

  I am having the seemingy popular problem with Widows Explorer not responding. I have tried the AUTRUNS and turned off everything recommended. I have run SCANNOW 3 times and it comes back clean. When booting in safe mode it appears to work. I read someplace that the problem could be a service program, but can't remember where I read it or how to do it. Something about turning off all service programs and then turning them back on one at a time. The problem is I don't remember what it said to do. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. as an FYI here is my system stats Sorry I can't access that part of control panel right now because windows explore not responding. I have an HPdesk top with a AMD quad core processor 1.8GB 1.5TB sata drives (a 1TB and a 500GB) Nvidia 8400 graphics card a 2mb internet connetion wireless 2 DBD R?W drives.   One of the machines I have is a 10 year old one. I can't discard it due to some sentiment (Mom). Legacy board: Mercury 810e, 133 MHz FSB Processor: Pentium III Tualatin 1.2 GHz Observation: I see an entry in the BIOS for the CPU Frequency from 6.0 to 11.0. Last value is Safe Mode. I don't know what value to choose for my CPU. So I'm running that CPU in "Safe Mode". What is the correct value for this CPU? Is Safe Mode really safe to run this CPU?

  I'm currently trying to figure out why a European chain retailer is delaying a dv7 [remaining code number is not same with american]; it is listed in their site for several days and while ordered on Monday they still don't have it in their central storage. In an earlier call I was advised that since Intel announces the processor now it may start dispatching from the 6th. Is that true? Is HP obligated not to dispatch it before the 6th? (normally/legally or as a 'deal between gentlemen'). Does anyone know if HP dispatches normally dv7s now? Did they intentionally not dispatch them to retailers before the CES?

• Problem identifying which page/page/function locks whole IIS server

  Hello, I have problem identifying which page/page/function locks whole IIS server. Out of the blue whole w3wp.exe jumps to CPU 90-98% usage. I have created 3 different application pools to see which w3wp.exe service locks the processor but I am unable to find out this information. I can only see that 2 of 3 services have 0-5% usage and one is jumping around 90-98% after some while. I think some process/function/redirect/sql is doing this but I would like to eliminate it. So far I am not even able to find the source of the problem. On my local development machine with VS2010 everything works like charm and I am unable to replicate problem. The server is windows 2k3 web server, sql server 2k5 and .net 4.0 Thank you for your help, links or any information on this issue. Fero

• Installing additional printer drivers (x86) on Windows 7 (x64)

  I've successfully installed Windows 7 (x64) and drivers for my Canon MP510, and have no problem printing with this setup. There is another PC in the network running XP SP3, and I want to share the printer so that users of that PC can also print. On W7 I have the option of installing additional printer drivers for other system architectures (Itanium and x86). I've downloaded the most current 32-bit drivers for the printer, but every time I direct the install dialog to the folder containing the drivers, I get the following error message: Selected printer driver not found The specified location does not contain the driver Canon Inkjet MP510 Printer for the requested processor architecture. Retry Cancel I'm stumped. I'm absolutely certain that the specified location actually does contain the correct drivers; I've even installed them on the XP system. I've tried everything I can think of. What am I overlooking?

• Poor CPU usage under Ubuntu

  Hello, I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 and I am now experiencing a strange problem. My computer has a quad-core processor, and when I am running several processes simultaneously, none of the cores is fully used. Before the upgrade, when I was running 4 processes, each of them was using 100% CPU (I could see that with the 'top' command). But now, CPU usage oscillates and is always pretty low. • Notebook with NVIDIA Optimus not switching video card in games

  I have a Samsung RC720 notebook with Intel Integrated Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M. As you can see it has two video adapters and Optimus is supposed to switch between them. But when I choose dedicated GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel and try to run, for example, GTA IV, it uses integrated graphics and I get very poor performance. I have already installed last NVIDIA and notebook drivers, chose high-performance in NVIDIA Control Panel, tried to execute with "Run with graphics processor..." context option and so on. • Why does a Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc appear every time I connect to Windows Server 2003 SBS?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

  I've been having some hard times with Virtualbox. I use it to run 64-bit Debian guest on a Windows 7 host to be able to code for linux systems. It generally crashes when I build my code in eclipse cdt, or if I am doing some intensive operations. Should I lower the memory and core usage? Is this some sort of virtualbox problem? I upgraded to virtualbox v4.1.8 and the problem still occurs. My virtual machine instance uses 1736MB out of 4GB of ram, and I use 2 out of 8 processor cores. But still, the whole thing crashes 1 or 2 times every single day.

• Good free software to track and graph memory and CPU usage on Windows?

  There are many questions on Linux memory tracking, but I haven't seen any for Windows. In my case however its a Windows XP Pro box I need to track the memory and CPU usage of. The reason I need it is due to a server program I'm trying that is eating all my processor and some of my memory which is freezing my RDP session and System Explorer and even makes it difficult to login physically. As this is a very constrained server I'm working off of (768 MB RAM with Pentium 4 which disappears with this program), I need a program that doesn't run/require a webserver. I can give it a MySQL database if necessary however. Is there any suggestions for such a program?

  I have never understood this. This is what i know: 64 bits OS if you want to handle more than 2GB RAM. Else, 32 bits OS. So on Ubuntu's homepage you can download either 64 bits or 32 bits. But the 64 bits is called amd64 and the 32 bits is called i386. So i have to have a AMD processor to run amd64? And intel to run i386? And if someone codes a software (lets say Apache). Does he have to code one 32 bits and one 64 bits? Do some softwares only exist for 32 and not 64 and vice versa? Thanks in advance!

• Can I run Linux on the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless, with a built-in 3G modem, and connect using the built in modem?

  I apologize if my question made little sense, I am very tired at the moment. Anyway, Recently I purchases the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless. It runs on the Intel Atom processor and came with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is quite possibly the worst and most restrictive OS I have ever used. I plan on installing CRUX, after doing a little research on minimal, free, Linux operating systems, as I am working on web programming using Python, among other things. My only worry is that, because my HP Mini uses a built in wireless card (and I have no wifi connection, only a 3G connection) that has a "mobile access" connection to Verizon wireless, I am not sure if after installing CRUX that I would still be able to connect using this option. I have never used Linux before, and am hoping this will work. So if anybody has experience with this...please answer, can I connect to vzw 3G with linux, using an internal mobile access card...

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • High load on a nagios server -- How many service checks for a nagios server is too many?

  I have a nagios server running Ubuntu with a 2.0 GHz Intel Processor, a RAID10 array, and 400 MB of RAM. It monitors a total of 42 services across 8 hosts, most of which are checked using the check_http plugin even 5 minutes, some every minute. Recently the load on the nagios server has been above 4, often as high as 6. The server also runs cacti, gathering statistics every minute for 6 hosts. I wonder, how many services should hardware like this be able to handle? Is the load so high because I am pushing the limits of the hardware, or should this hardware be able to handle 42 service checks plus cacti? If the hardware is inadequate, should I look to add more RAM, more cores, or faster cores? What hardware / service checks are others running?

• What software works well for viewing massive TIFF images on Windows 7?

  Today I saw an article about a half-gig, 24000 square-pixel high-res composite image of the moon. (This is a much smaller version of the image) I find astronomy interesting, so I thought I'd download it and take a look. With 4GB of RAM and an i5 processor, I figured my computer could handle it. Unfortunately, the built-in Windows Picture Viewer didn't do such a great job. While it opened the file without a problem, zooming in was ineffective. The zoomed out image loaded, but zooming in just showed a scaled-up version of the zoomed-out version, not any detail: Closing the picture viewer also took a very long time, and the whole process used up much more RAM than the 500MB of the picture (usage went from 1.3GB to 3.8GB). What other software would work better for this? I would prefer something that is free and fairly simple. I don't really want to use an editor (like photoshop or GIMP), just a nice lightweight viewer. Any suggestions?

• Will my RAID0 stay intact when I move it to a new computer?

  My primary drive is a 250GB WD SATA drive. So, I added 2x 500GB 7,200 RPM WD SATA drives into my Windows Vista box and created a 1TB RAID0. I then formatted the the primary drive and installed Windows 7. To my pleasant surprise when I booted into Windows 7 my RAID0 was still intact and I kept trotting along the same as I did before. Now I am replacing my motherboard, processor, and RAM and plan on formatting the primary 250GB drive again and using it to boot for a new clean install of Windows 7. My question is: if I move these two SATA drives which are setup for RAID0 into the new system, install Windows 7 again, will the RAID0 remain? Edit: Software RAID. I created it within Windows. The RAID0 does NOT contain the system boot partition.
