• Difference between Detach/Attach and Restore/BackUp a DB

  Transact-SQL BACKUP/RESTORE is the normal method for database backup and recovery. Databases can be backed up while online. The backup file size is usually smaller than the database files since only used pages are backed up. Also, in the FULL or BULK_LOGGED recovery model, you can reduce potential data loss by performing transaction log backups. Detaching a database removes the database from SQL Server while leaving the physical database files intact. This allows you to rename or move the physical files and then re-attach. Although one could perform cold backups using this technique, detach/attach isn't really intended to be used as a backup/recovery process. Commonly it is recommended that you use BACKUP/RESTORE for disaster recovery (DR) scenario and copying data from one location to another. But this is not absolute, sometimes for a very large database, if you want to move it from one location to another, backup/restore process may spend a lot of time which you do not like, in this case, detaching/attaching a database is a better way since you can attach a workable database very fast. But you need to aware that detaching a database will bring it offline for a short time and detaching/attaching does not provide DR function. • Wine / PlayOnLinux dependency issues when trying to install

  I am curious as to why installing PlayOnLinux entails removing seemingly unrelated packages like google-earth-stable. Is this the expected behaviour? This is the output I get when trying to install playonlinux through apt-get: The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: python-scour pax ncurses-term Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. • Problems with both LightDM and GDM using DisplayLink USB monitor

  When I use LightDM, it will auto-login to desktop just fine. The only problem is Compiz doesn't work, and menus don't work. I can't right-click the desktop, and I can't select program menus in the top bar (I.e clicking "File" does nothing). When I use GDM, I only get a blank blue screen and the mouse cursor. I can't Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart, but I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 to switch modes. I don't think it's auto-logging me in, but I'm not sure. It plays the login screen noise. Will update with more information when I get home! EDIT: Okay, so I did a fresh install, just to ensure I hadn't borked something playing in the console. I reconfigured my setup as I did before, with the same results. Here's what I followed. The only difference is that instead of setting "vga=normal nomodeset" I set "GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX = text". Also I only have the DisplayLink monitor configured in my xorg.conf file. At this point I'm using the open radeon driver, although I used the proprietary ati driver before. I'm not sure if I'm having a problem with: - X configuration - Graphics driver - DisplayLink driver - Unity - LightDM - Compiz - Or something else The resolution of the monitor is 800x480, 16bit. I tried setting a larger virtual resolution of 1200x720 (because the real resolution is lower than the recommended resolution), but it causes Ubuntu to boot into low graphics mode. When I get home I'm going to install the fglrx driver and see if it enables virtual resolutions, which may further enable my window manager to function properly.

• How to set acpi=off for installation?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit from a USB created in Windows using the recommended software from pendrivelinux. The USB is tested on two laptops and works fine. The install does not work on my desktop PC, it either hangs with lots of text on the screen, or it just gives me a screen with garbled colors. Right now it hangs on "[3.925311] Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...", but it hangs on different spots every time I try. I know that acpi=off will fix this. On older versions, there used to be a pink screen with the icon of a keyboard, at that screen I could press ESC, and I would then get a long list of languages, I could choose English, and then I would get options for setting acpi=off, then install without any problems. This new install menu does not have those options. The (now black and white) "Installer boot menu"'s advanced options is blank. There simply are no advanced options. If I go to help, then press F6, I get to a help screen describing the different boot parameters. I see examples of writing "Install acpi=off" However, writing "install acpi=off" it gives an error saying "could not find kernel image: install". How can I install Ubuntu 12.04 with acpi=off? (Oh, btw, nothing happens if I press F6 in the "Installer boot menu")

• Insufficient permissions within Eclipse when installed via synaptic in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Eclipse via the Synaptic Package Manager on Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (more details on footer). However, from within Eclipse, I lack sufficient permissions to perform upgrades on my package and add-ons. I'm a recovering Windows user, and while I have a couple of years Ubuntu experience, I am unfamiliar with the command-line and mainly interact through the packaged GUI. Specifically, I am trying to install the upgrade for Eclipse CVS Clientorg.eclipse.cvs.feature.group1.3.100.v20110520-0800-7B78FHl9VF7BD7KBM4GP9C I am tracking the varying installation advice on a similar question eclipse install: Gaurav Butola Basically, the most current upgrades are available directly from eclipse?... But at some point I remember reading that the latest version of eclipse had been designed for the previous LTS of Ubuntu - I don't know if that is still true. I have read about the vulnerabilities of Java 6, and so I have gone with Open Java 7 openjdk-amd64 (if that has any relevance to which Eclipse package and installation method I choose). But I'm not crazy about the idea of creating a gksudo link in the sidebar launcher. I don't know enough about chown to use it - if that's even appropriate (I don't want stray java escaping from Eclipse and connecting to SkyNet). Another possible solution that I foresee is modifying my user's group memberships/privileges on the file system as a whole. The only other information that I think might be relevant is that I notice that Synaptic installed all of the files into /usr/ instead of /opt/ like I have seen recommended. So should I be changing ownership, reinstalling using a non-Synaptic method, or what? Any advice is greatly appreciated.   Hi Friends,The flash hash is a great way to provide feedback to your users.Here is a quick tip for hiding the flash message after a period of time if you don’t want to leave it lingering around.First, add this line to the head of your layout to ensure the prototype and script.aculo.us javascript libraries are loaded:Next, add the following to either your layout (recommended), your view templates or a partial depending on your needs. I usually add this to a partial and include the partial in my layouts. "flash", :id = flash_type % "text/javascript" do % setTimeout("new Effect.Fade('');", 10000); This will wrap the flash message in a div with class=‘flash’ and id=‘error’, ‘notice’ or ‘warn’ depending on the flash key specified.The value ‘10000’ is the time in milliseconds before the flash will disappear. In this case, 10 seconds.This function looks pretty good and little javascript stunts like this can help make your site feel more professional. It’s also worth bearing in mind though, not everybody can see well or read as quickly as others so this may not be suitable for every application.Update:As Mitchell has pointed out (see comments below), it may be better to set the flash_type as the div class rather than it’s id. If there is the possibility that you’ll be showing more than one flash message per page, setting the flash_type as the div id will result in your HTML/XHTML code becoming invalid because the unique intentifier will be used more than once per page.Here is a slightly more complex version of the method shown above that will hide all divs with class ‘flash’ after a time delay, achieving the same effect and also ensuring your code stays valid with more than one flash message!   many developer thing to adopt IIS express aka Webmatrix to use inside visual studio. that the feature of Visual studio service pack 1. the visual studio 2010 sp1 allow developer to use webmatrix inside the visual studio. the developer can choose one of Visual studio development server or Webmatrix. the visual studio service pack 1 launch today but i am not recommended them because it’s in beta. if you use them then you may be in a big trouble because beta’s fundamental we all know. don’t be fool by installing them because they not tell you about both thing pros and cons. the stable version of visual studio is Visual studio who can be obtained from Microsoft download center not service pack 1. so beware to use unstable version. this is not browser then we have 3 option 1. chrome 2. firefox  3. Microsoft internet explorer [fool] because this is IDE and we have only one that can be problem if they work not well. the service pack 1 always changes your installation for visual studio Express edition [tool such as VWD or VCS express] if you already have them  i means service pack 1 then share your experience with us! if not that don’t look on Microsoft website blogs because they never tell you pros and cons of their software.

• Hot fix published for TFS2010 upgrade issues

  Microsoft has released a hot fix for the issues that are identified after the migration of TFS2005/TFS2008 servers to TFS2010. The issues are related to Merging and Labels: ·         Labels that were created before the upgrade are entirely empty.  Labels could be also have incorrect contents. ·         The merge wizard in Visual Studio does not display all valid merge targets for a given source path/branch. ·         During merging, merge candidates are shown for changes that were already merged prior to the upgrade. If you have not yet upgraded to TFS 2010, the hotfix is now available and is highly recommended to be applied before configuring your team project collections. Because this hotfix applies to the upgrade of version control content, it must be applied after TFS 2010 setup is complete, but before configuration is started.  At the end of the setup experience, the Success screen is shown indicating the completion of the installation.  Normally, users will continue on to the configuration part, but in this case, the user need to cancel the configuration part by un-checking the “Launch Team Foundation Server Configuration Tool” box, which will enable the Cancel button. After exiting setup, the hotfix executable can be run to update the upgrade steps.   There are multiple reasons why a user may want to make a copy of the database. Sometimes a user wants to copy the database to the same server and sometime wants to copy the database on a different server. The important point is that DBA and Developer may want copies of their database for various purposes. I copy my database for backup purpose. However, when we hear coping database – the very first thought which comes to our mind is – Backup and Restore or Attach and Detach. Both of these processes have their own advantage and disadvantages. The matter of the fact, those methods is much efficient and recommended methods. However, if you just want to copy your database as it is and do not want to go for advanced feature. You can just use the copy feature of the SQL Server. • Loading the Cache from the Business Application Server

  By default, the Web Application server will directly connect to the Database to load its cache at startup time. Customers, who implement the product installation in distributed mode, where the Web Application Server and Business Application Server are deployed separately, may wish to prevent the Web Application Server to connect to the database directly. Installation of the product in distributed mode was introduced in Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2. In the Advanced Web Application Server configuration, it is possible to set the Create Simple Web Application Context (WEBAPPCONTEXT) to true to force the Web Application Server to load its cache via the Business Application rather than direct loading. The value of false will retain the default behavior of allowing the Web Application Server to connect directly to the database at startup time to load the cache. The value of true will load the cache data via direct calls to the Business Application Server, which can cause a slight delay in the startup process to cater for the architecture load rather than the direct load. The impact of the settings is illustrated in the figure below:                             When setting this value to true, the following properties files should be manually removed prior to executing the product: $SPLEBASE/etc/conf/root/WEB-INF/classes/hibernate.properties $SPLEBASE/splapp/applications/root/WEB-INF/classes/hibernate.properties Note: For customers who are using a local installation, where the Web Application Server and Business Application Server are combined in the deployed server, it is recommended to set this parameter to false, the default, unless otherwise required. This facility is available for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 in Group Fix 3 (via Patch 11900153) and Patch 13538242 available from My Oracle Support.

• Is it bad practice for services to share a database in SOA?

  I have recently been reading Hohpe and Woolf's Enterprise Integration Patterns, some of Thomas Erl's books on SOA and watching various videos and podcasts by Udi Dahan et al. on CQRS and Event Driven systems. Systems in my place of work suffer from high coupling. Although each system theoretically has its own database, there is a lot of joining between them. In practice this means there is one huge database that all systems use. For example, there is one table of customer data. Much of what I've read seems to suggest denormalising data so that each system uses only its database, and any updates to one system are propagated to all the others using messaging. I thought this was one of the ways of enforcing the boundaries in SOA - each service should have its own database, but then I read this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4019902/soa-joining-data-across-multiple-services and it suggests this is the wrong thing to do. Segregating the databases does seem like a good way of decoupling systems, but now I'm a bit confused. Is this a good route to take? Is it ever recommended that you should segregate a database on, say an SOA service, an DDD Bounded context, an application, etc?

• 7u45 Caller-Allowable-Codebase and Trusted-Library

  Java 7 update 45 (October 2013) changed the interactions between JavaScript and Java Applets made through LiveConnect. The 7u45 update is a critical patch update that has also raised the security baseline and users are strongly recommended to upgrade. Versions below the security baseline used to apply the Trusted-Library Manifest attribute to call between sandboxed code and higher-privileged code. The Trusted-Library value was a Boolean true or false. Security changes for the current security baseline (7u45) introduced a different Caller-Allowable-Codebase that indicates precisely where these LiveConnect calls can originate. For example, LiveConnect calls should not necessarily originate from 3rd party components of a web page or other DOM-based browser manipulations (pdf). Additional information about these can be located at “JAR File Manifest Attributes for Security.” The workaround for end-user dialogs is described on the 7u45 release notes, which explains removing the Trusted-Library attribute for LiveConnect calls in favor of Caller-Allowable-Codebase. This provides necessary protections (without warnings) for all users at or above the security baseline. Client installations automatically detect updates to the secure baseline and prompt users to upgrade. Warning dialogs above or below Both of these attributes should work together to support the various versions of client installations. We are aware of the issue that modifying the Manifest to use the newer Caller-Allowable-Codebase causes warnings for users below the security baseline and that not doing it displays a warning for users above. Manifest Attribute 7u45 7u40 and below Only Caller-Allowable-Codebase No dialog Displays prompt Only Trusted-Library Displays prompt No dialog Both Displays prompt (*) No dialog This will be fixed in a future release so that both attributes can co-exist. The current work-around would be to favor using Caller-Allowable-Codebase over the old Trusted-Library call. For users who need to stay below the security baseline System Administrators that schedule software deployments across managed computers may consider applying a Deployment Rule Set as described in Option 1 of “What to do if your applet is blocked or warns of mixed code.” System Administrators may also sign up for email notifications of Critical Patch Updates.

• What is up with the Joy of Clojure 2nd edition?

  Manning just released the second edition of the beloved Joy of Clojure book, and while I share that love I get the feeling that many of the examples are already outdated. In particular, in the chapter on optimization the recommended type-hinting seems not to be allowed by the compiler. I don't know if this was allowable for older versions of Clojure. For example: (defn factorial-f [^long original-x] (loop [x original-x, acc 1] (if (>= 1 x) acc (recur (dec x) (*' x acc))))) returns: clojure.lang.Compiler$CompilerException: java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: Can't type hint a primitive local, compiling:(null:3:1) Likewise, the chapter on core.logic seems be using an old API and I have to find workarounds for each example to accommodate the recent changes. • Why does TDD work?

  Test-driven development (TDD) is big these days. I often see it recommended as a solution for a wide range of problems here in Programmers SE and other venues. I wonder why it works. From an engineering point of view, it puzzles me for two reasons: The "write test + refactor till pass" approach looks incredibly anti-engineering. If civil engineers used that approach for bridge construction, or car designers for their cars, for example, they would be reshaping their bridges or cars at very high cost, and the result would be a patched-up mess with no well thought-out architecture. The "refactor till pass" guideline is often taken as a mandate to forget architectural design and do whatever is necessary to comply with the test; in other words, the test, rather than the user, sets the requirement. In this situation, how can we guarantee good "ilities" in the outcomes, i.e. a final result that is not only correct but also extensible, robust, easy to use, reliable, safe, secure, etc.? This is what architecture usually does. Testing cannot guarantee that a system works; it can only show that it doesn't. In other words, testing may show you that a system contains defects if it fails a test, but a system that passes all tests is not safer than a system that fails them. Test coverage, test quality and other factors are crucial here. The false safe feelings that an "all green" outcomes produces to many people has been reported in civil and aerospace industries as extremely dangerous, because it may be interepreted as "the system is fine", when it really means "the system is as good as our testing strategy". Often, the testing strategy is not checked. Or, who tests the tests? I would like to see answers containing reasons why TDD in software engineering is a good practice, and why the issues that I have explained above are not relevant (or not relevant enough) in the case of software. • Black screen appears when booting new install of 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• Is this an apt-get issue or network issue?

  I just installed my first Ubuntu server (12.04) instance and immediately am noticing a few things: Running apt-get install or update fails (see below) Running ifconfig produces peculiar IP addresses starting with 10.x.x.x and my router does not see the server at all in its "Attached Devices" page (its a consumer grade Netgear) When I run apt-get I get 50+ of the following errors: Failed to fetch <some-http-url. Temporary failure resolving <blah.ubuntu.com I read up on this error for 12.04, and found some similar posts on this forum and on serverfault that recommended going into /etc/resolv.conf and adding an entry: nameserver 8.8.8.8 To my surprise, I found that /etc/resolve.conf was a symlink pointing to somewhere else and I had to delete it first, then create a new one with the entry indicated above. I restarted the server and tried running apt-get again: same results. How do I start diagnosing the problem (I'm a relatively new Linux/Ubuntu user)? Additional details that may help: This is actually a virtual machine running as a VirtualBox guest OS The physical host that is running this VM is my laptop which has a wireless connection; I'm wondering if (somehow) the laptop is getting the network wirelessly, but perhaps either the VBox VM and/or the Ubuntu server OS isn't configured for wireless and so nothing is "getting through"? Thanks in advance for any pointers! • Ubuntu 13.10 installed and worked, but now not working

  I have a HP G7000 laptop. I updated/upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, after the software updater recommended I upgrade. I have duel booting system with Windows Vista. The system was working for the past two days, but I start getting the errors below, after selecting Ubuntu in Grub Menu on startup and at the splash screen it says "Press S to Skip or M for manual configuration" Pressing S gives a black screen and m takes you the errors below. Windows boots and works fine after selection in the Grub Menu. [ 15.235703] EXT3-fs (sda5): error: unrecognized mount option "discard" or missing value. Why is it that the installation on the hard disk has stopped working and does not recognize my / ? What do the above errors mean and how can i solve them? There was no power failure before, during or after the update/upgrade process from 13.04 to 13.10. I now would like to go back to 13.04 without reinstalling afresh? Any help will be appreciated. This way the report from the Workflow Analyzer can be submitted from the Application and its output can be seen from the application as well.

• crunchbang: it takes up *how* much memory?!?!

  I've been trying many distros of Linux lately, trying to find something I like for my netbook. I started out with Ubuntu, and I can tell you I am a big fan. Ubuntu is now fast to install, much simpler to administer, and pretty light resource-wise. My original install was the standard 32 bit version of 9.04. I tried the netbook remix version of this release, but it was very, very slow. Even the full-blown version used only about 200mb. Much better than the almost 800 that the recommended Windows y version took. Once the newest release of Ubuntu was released, I decided to try the netbook remx of 10.04. It used even less RAM; only about 150mb. I thought I'd found my OS. I certainly settled in and prepared to use it forever. Then, someone I know suggested I try cunchbang. It is the most minimalistic UI I've ever seen, using Openbox rather than Gnome or KDE. Very slick, simple and clean. Since I am using the alpha of the most recent version (using Debian Squeeze), the apps provided for you are few...although more will be provided soon. You do have a word processor, etc., although not the OpenOffice you would normally get in Ubuntu. But the best part? 48MB. That's it. 48mb fully loaded, supporting what I can "hotel services". It's fast, boots quick, and believe it or not, I can even do Java-based development....on my netbook! Pretty slick.   More on it as I use it.
