• Is the REST support in Spring 3's MVC Framework production quality yet?

  Hi all, Since Spring 3 was released in December last year, I have been trying out the new REST features in the MVC framework for a small commercial project involving implementing a few RESTful Web Services which consume XML and return XML views using JiBX. I plan to use either Hibernate or JDBC Templates for the data persistence. As a Spring 2.0 developer, I have found Spring 3's (and 2.5's) new annotations way of doing things quite a paradigm shift and have personally found some of the new MVC annotation features difficult to get up to speed with for non-trivial applications - as such, I am often having to dig for information in forums and blogs that is not apparent from going through the reference guide or from the various Spring 3 REST examples on the web. For deadline-driven production quality and mission critical applications implementing a RESTful architecture, should I be holding off from Spring 3 and rather be using mature JSR 311 (JAX-RS) compliant frameworks like RESTlet or Jersey for the REST layer of my code (together with Spring 2 / 2.5 to tie things together)? I had no problems using RESTlet 1.x in a previous project and it was quite easy to get up to speed with (no magic tricks behind the scenes), but when starting my current project it initially looked like the new REST stuff in Spring 3's MVC Framework would make life easier. Do any of you out there have any advice to give on this? Does anyone know of any commercial / production-quality projects using, or having successfully delivered with, the new REST stuff in Spring 3's MVC Framework. Many thanks Glen

• Checking if radio buttons are checked in Firefox

  On my site, I have two checkboxes created in my ASP.NET MVC view like so: Html.RadioButton("check", "true", "true" == (string) ViewData["someKey"], new { id = "check1"}); Html.RadioButton("check", "false", "false" == (string) ViewData["someKey"], new { id = "check2"}); I am positive that ViewData["someKey"] has the value "true" in it. In my JS init function, I perform the following check: alert($('#check1').is(':checked') + " " + $('#check2').is(':checked')); In Firefox (and only Firefox), my alert dialog will show the following (it works as expected in every other browser): Initial page load: true false Normal refresh via Ctrl + R: false false Refresh skipping cache via Ctrl + Shift + R: true false I have tried many different methods of looking at the checkbox value, including $('#check1').attr('checked') without success. If I examine the HTML in Firebug, I can see that the first radio button has the property checked="checked" in it. Why is the checkbox value changing in FF when I refresh, and how can I mitigate this? Since this seems to be a FF-only bug, how can I change my code to make it work? This SO question seemed to ask something similar, but none of the proposed solutions seem to work in this case. Edit: I should also point out that when the radio button is rendered after the refresh in FF, it's not actually being displayed as checked either, despite what the HTML is telling me. • Shortcut to create automatic properties using Visual Studio 2008/2010 or Resharper 5

  I have a class that contains a load of properties that contain results of some calculations e.g: public class Results { public double Result1 { get; set; } public double Result2 { get; set; } } In a different class I am doing calculations to populate the above properties, e.g: public class Calc { private Results Calc() { Results res = new Results(); res.Result1 = ... some calculation res.Result2 = ... some other calculation res.Result3 = ... // not yet defined in 'Results' class return res; } } When I am writing the Calc class, 'Result3' will be highlighted in red as it is not yet defined in the 'Results' class. Currently I am using the Resharper ALT-Enter shortcut, selecting "Create Property 'Result3'" which will create the following code int the 'Results' class: public double Result3 { get { throw new NotImplementedException(); } set { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } Which I need to manually change to: public double Result3 { get; set; } Then I use the CTRL-Shift-Backspace shortcut to take me back to the 'Calc' class. How can I easily create automatic properties in the 'Results' class if they are not yet defined directly from the 'Calc' class?

• Elegantly determine if more than one boolean is "true"

  I have a set of five boolean values. If more than one of these are true I want to excecute a particular function. What is the most elegant way you can think of that would allow me to check this condition in a single if() statement? Target language is C# but I'm interested in solutions in other languages as well (as long as we're not talking about specific built-in functions). One interesting option is to store the booleans in a byte, do a right shift and compare with the original byte. Something like if(myByte && (myByte 1)) But this would require converting the separate booleans to a byte (via a bitArray?) and that seems a bit (pun intended) clumsy... [edit]Sorry, that should have been if(myByte & (myByte - 1)) [/edit] Note: This is of course very close to the classical "population count", "sideways addition" or "Hamming weight" programming problem - but not quite the same. I don't need to know how many of the bits are set, only if it is more than one. My hope is that there is a much simpler way to accomplish this.

  Ok folks I have bombed around for a few days trying to find a good solution for this one. What I have is two possible address formats. 28 Main St Somecity, NY 12345-6789 or Main St Somecity, Ny 12345-6789 What I need to do Is split both strings down into an array structured as such address[0] = HousNumber address[1] = Street address[2] = City address[3] = State address[4] = ZipCode My major problem is how to account for the lack of a house number. with out having the whole array shift the data up one. address[0] = Street address[1] = City address[2] = State address[3] = ZipCode [Edit] For those that are wondering this is what i am doing atm . • Android Webkit Input elements buggy with CSS3 translate3D

  I'm having a couple issues with the Input element in a Webkit Android App i'm developing. Testing on 2.X, but 3.x doesn't seem to have these issues... The app works by having separate Div's for each "page", and I'm using CSS3 translate3D to animate between the pages. Some of those pages include Input elements. When I tap on the input to gain focus, any of my "position:fixed" Div's will shift about 5px from the top, and 5px left. Now the kicker... it will eventually fix itself, and then never happen again when you tap on an input, its only that first time... My other problem, the Input elements are screwy with keyboards, for instance, spell corrections/autocomplete will not input text, and when using Swype Keyboard, you can't "swipe" the word, ONLY individual taps for each letter will input text into the Input element. I've read that a lot of these might be caused by CSS3 Translate3D. But, I've tried just about everything to fix these issues, and I've searched just about every site for a solution, but havent been able to find a fix, or find anyone else with this issue... Does anyone else have these issues, or know of a fix? (Possible solution??) Anyone know of a way to override the default behavior of Input elements in the webkit? I wonder if I can generate my own TextView and position it over these input fields...? Any help is greatly appreciated :)

• Radio buttons being reset in FF on cache-refresh

  (This is technically an addendum to an earlier StackOverflow question I had posted, but my original post asked a different question which doesn't really cover this topic -- I don't want to edit my older question as I feel this is different enough to merit its own page) While browsing my website in Firefox 3.5 (and only FF3.5), I come across a page with two radio buttons that have the following HTML code: <input id="check1" type="radio" value="True" name="check" checked="checked"/> <input id="check2" type="radio" value="False" name="check"/> This page renders as expected, with 'check1' checked and 'check2' unchecked. When I then go to refresh the page by pressing Control + R, the two radio buttons render, but they are both unchecked even though the raw HTML code is the same (as above). If I do a cache-miss refresh (via Control + F5 or Control + Shift + R), the page returns back to the way you'd expect it. This is not a problem in any other browser I've tried except FF3.5. What is causing these radio buttons to be reset on a normal refresh? How can I avoid this?

  I have a wget like script which downloads a page and then retrieves all the files linked in img tags on that page. Given the URL of the original page and the the link extracted from the img tag in that page I need to build the URL for the image file I want to retrieve. • How to check if a number is a power of 2

  Today I needed a simple algorithm for checking if a number is a power of 2. The algorithm needs to be: Simple Correct for any ulong value. I came up with this simple algorithm: private bool IsPowerOfTwo(ulong number) { if (number == 0) return false; for (ulong power = 1; power > 0; power = power << 1) { // this for loop used shifting for powers of 2, meaning // that the value will become 0 after the last shift // (from binary 1000...0000 to 0000...0000) then, the for // loop will break out if (power == number) return true; if (power > number) return false; } return false; } But then I thought, how about checking if log2x is an exactly round number? But when I checked for 2^63+1, Math.Log returned exactly 63 because of rounding. So I checked if 2 to the power 63 is equal to the original number - and it is, because the calculation is done in doubles and not in exact numbers: private bool IsPowerOfTwo_2(ulong number) { double log = Math.Log(number, 2); double pow = Math.Pow(2, Math.Round(log)); return pow == number; } This returned true for the given wrong value: 9223372036854775809. Does anyone have any suggestion for a better algorithm?

• Preserving Tabs in POST Data

  I need to preserve tab characters from a textarea through POST Data. It seems that there's no way to differentiate tabs from spaces in the $_POST array, and this is really frustrating me. I'm using a jQuery plugin from here to allow for tab and shift+tab usage within a textarea. http://teddevito.com/demos/textarea.html The JavaScript is using this as its TAB character: $.fn.tabby.defaults = {tabString : String.fromCharCode(9)}; For some reason, it shows an individual space instead of each tab character, so all my code formatting is lost: <textarea name="field0" rows="26" cols="123"><?php echo $_POST['field0']; ?></textarea> Neither does this. Apparently the tabs disappear before the data even reaches the str_replace function (the four spaces in the first double quotes is when I press TAB in my text editor). <textarea name="field0" rows="26" cols="123"><?php echo str_replace(" ", "\t", $_POST['field0']); ?></textarea> The reason I need tabs and not multiple spaces is because my application features and on-line code editor. Anyone have any ideas? I'm guessing the solution would involve modifying the data with javascript before it's sent through POST, but I haven't the slightest idea how to start.

• Is there a JavaScript event that fires when a tab index switch is triggered? (TABINDEX does not work for inputs in IFRAME)

  My specific use case is that I have a WYSIWYG editor which is basically an editable iframe. To the user, however, it looks like a standard-issue textarea. My problem is that I have inputs that sit before and after this editor in the (perceived) tab index and I'd like the user to be able to press tab (or the equivalent on his platform of choice) to get to the WYSIWYG editor when he's in the previous element and shift-tab to get to it when he's in the latter element. I know this can be faked using the key events and checking whether or not the tab key was pressed, but I'm curious if there's a better way. UPDATE. treeface clarified the actual problem in the comments. PROBLEM: In normal case, you can use "TABINDEX" attribute of the <input> element to control that, when tabbing out of "Subject" input field (in an email form), the focus lands on "Body" input field in the e-mail. This is done simply by assigning correctly ordered values to "TABINDEX" attribute of both input fields. The problem is that TABINDEX attribute only orders elements within the same frame. So, if "Body" input field is actually in an internal IFRAME, you can't tab out of "Subject" in the parent frame straight into "Body" in the IFRAME using TABINDEX order.

If you press the button and hold it, the content starts to move (in the appropriate direction). If you not hold the button, then the movement stops. • What, if any, printable character did a user type based on the values in a given System.Windows.Form

  As a workaround for a problem, I think I have to handle KeyDown events to get the printable character the user actually typed. KeyDown supplies me with a KeyEventArgs object with the properities KeyCode, KeyData, KeyValue, Modifiers, Alt, Shift, Control. My first attempt was just to consider the KeyCode to be the ascii code, but KeyCode on my keyboard is 46, a period ("."), so I end up printing a period when the user types the delete key. So, I know my logic is inadequate. (For those who are curious, the problem is that I have my own combobox in a DataGridView's control collection and somehow SOME characters I type don't produce the KeyPress and TextChanged ComboBox events. These letters include Q, $, %.... This code will reproduce the problem. Generate a Form App and replace the ctor with this code.   After searching and experimenting for 2 days I relent. What I'd like to do is manually wire up injected html with jquery validation. I'm getting a simple string array back from the server and creating a select with the strings as options. The static fields on the form are validating fine. Ran out of threads' warning. In trying to figure out why I was limited to the number of threads I could create, I replaced the use threads; line with use threads (stack_size => 1);. The resultant code happily dealt with churning out 2000+ threads. Can anyone explain this behavior?

  I'm writing a multi threaded perl script and storing the output in a csv file. I'm trying to insert a field called sl.no. in the csv file for each row entered but as I'm using threads, the sl. no. overlaps in most. • Run FFmpeg from Shell Script

I would instead like to run an ffmpeg command on non MP3 files, how can I do this? • Optimized 2D Tile Scrolling in OpenGL

  Hello, I'm developing a 2D sidescrolling game and I need to optimize my tiling code to get a better frame rate. As of right now I'm using a texture atlas and 16x16 tiles for 480x320 screen resolution. The level scrolls in both directions, and is significantly larger than 1 screen (thousands of pixels). I use glTranslate for the actual scrolling. So far I've tried: Drawing only the on-screen tiles using glTriangles, 2 per square tile (too much overhead) Drawing the entire map as a Display List (great on a small level, way to slow on a large one) Partitioning the map into Display Lists half the size of the screen, then culling display lists (still slows down for 2-directional scrolling, overdraw is not efficient) Any advice is appreciated, but in particular I'm wondering: I've seen Vertex Arrays/VBOs suggested for this because they're dynamic. What's the best way to take advantage of this? If I simply keep 1 screen of vertices plus a bit of overdraw, I'd have to recopy the array every few frames to account for the change in relative coordinates (shift everything over and add the new rows/columns). If I use more overdraw this doesn't seem like a big win; it's like the half-screen display list idea. Does glScissor give any gain if used on a bunch of small tiles like this, be it a display list or a vertex array/VBO Would it be better just to build the level out of large textures and then use glScissor? Would losing the memory saving of tiling be an issue for mobile development if I do this (just curious, I'm currently on a PC)? This approach was mentioned here Thanks :)
