    Hi Guys, I am building a widget for my users and trying to get it working however I keep running into a X-Domain issue with this header. httpfox gives me - NS_ERROR_DOM_BAD_URI - and on further investigation I find that its Access-Control-Request-Method: GET Access-Control-Request-Header: x-requested-with I am not sure why its not loading but I basically call a script and then I am trying to grab some html to load it but it gets blocked with the above headers. How can I get around this prob ?

    Hi in my application there is web browser control to show some static html pages. The pages are displayed properly. but images are not displayed.. I tried with changing src-path but no success. my htmlpages folder is located at bin folder. And i am assigning it as. FileStream source = new FileStream(@"..\HtmlPages\supportHtml.html", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); if i open html files in browser, the images are displayed properly.. So, What is the correct path for images..?? If i set full path to src attribute of <img> tag..it works. but i think its not a proper way. :(

  • Installing a source control without admin rights

    I'm forced to use SourceSafe at my job. There is no way this is going to change. I would like to use another source control for my own need in parallel. I want to be able to keep an history of my modifications, branch easily and merge. I can install any application that doesn't requires admin rights. I cannot install Python or anything that integrates in File Explorer. I'm not much of a command line guy so a GUI is a must. I managed to install Mercurial but not TortoiseHG. There is a chance msysgit would install but the GUI isn't very good. Any suggestions?

    Hi, I'm looking for independent industry reports that compare and contrast the various source control tools out there. In particular, I care about Clearcase vs Sourcesafe vs SVN, but if the report includes other SCM systems that's fine. I need this for a client who wants to get a feel on exactly what they stand to gain switching to SVN (yes, from Clearcase and VSS). In other words, something I can use to sell it to their business.   • Procedures before checking in to source control?

    I am starting to get a reputation at work as the "guy who breaks the builds". The problem is not that I am writing dodgy code, but when it comes to checking my fixes back into source control, it all goes wrong. I am regularly doing stupid things like : forgetting to add new files accidentally checking in code for a half fixed bug along with another bug fix forgetting to save the files in VS before checking them in I need to develop some habits / tools to stop this. What do you regularly do to ensure the code you check in is correct and is what needs to go in? Edit I forgot to mention that things can get pretty chaotic in this place. I quite often have two or three things that Im working on in the same code base at any one time. When I check in I will only really want to check in one of those things.

A lot of people also have a serious dislike for cvs. In many places I have heard a lot of differing opinions on whether or not using VSS or cvs is better or worse then using no source control, please rate the worst and explain why!!!!! you rated them this way. Feel free to throw in your own horrible system in the rankings. If you feel it depends on the circumstances try to explain the some of the different scenarios which lead to different rankings. (note:I see a lot of discussion of what is better but little of what is worse.) second note: while both answers are nice I'm looking less for good replacements and more for a comparison of which is worse and more importantly why!

  • Why is distributed source control considered harder?

    It seems rather common (around here, at least) for people to recommend SVN to newcomers to source control because it's "easier" than one of the distributed options. As a very casual user of SVN before switching to Git for many of my projects, I found this to be not the case at all. It is conceptually easier to set up a DCVS repository with git init (or whichever), without the problem of having to set up an external repository in the case of SVN. And the base functionality between SVN, Git, Mercurial, Bazaar all use essentially identical commands to commit, view diffs, and so on. Which is all a newcomer is really going to be doing. The small difference in the way Git requires changes to be explicitly added before they're committed, as opposed to SVN's "commit everything" policy, is conceptually simple and, unless I'm mistaken, not even an issue when using Mercurial or Bazaar. So why is SVN considered easier? I would argue that this is simply not true.

  • First-time contractor question: how do I handle web hosting?

    I've started doing a little freelance web work and I've got to build a site for a client. The client doesn't currently have a hosting service, so either I or they are going to have to set it up. Traditionally, how does this work out? Do I set it up and then transfer ownership to them when I'm done? Do I leave it to them to set it up? If they're going to be paying for the hosting directly, does that affect anything? Basically, I'm brand new at all this and any and all advice on how to handle hosting would be greatly appreciated.

  • Maintaining stored procedures in source control

    How do you guys maintain your stored procedures? I'd like to keep versions of them for a few different reasons. I also will be setting up cruisecontrol.net and nant this weekend to automate builds. I was thinking about coding something that would generate the create scripts for all tables/sprocs/udf/xml schemas in my development database. Then it would take those scripts and update them in source control every couple hours.... Ideally, I'd like to make this some sort of plugin/module for cruisecontrol.net. Any other ideas?

  • Looking for a source code management system with a good GUI client

    We are currently using CS-RCS Pro for source code management, and are looking for to replace this due to performance issues. It is based on client side file access with no own protocol, which makes it painfully slow to use over a slow VPN line since it always rewrites the whole history of a file. It does however have a GUI client which is very simple and gives a great overview. We have three main requirements in a SCM: Fast. It must have a server side service or some other smart way so working with files with a large history is fast. A good Windows GUI client (not Explorer shell integration, not VS or Eclipse IDE integration), so working with files and branches is easy. The possibility to have several branches checked out at once in different directories. Does anyone have a recommendation of a SCM which fulfills there requirements?

    Smart TV Remote is an unofficial Android app that lets you control Samsung Smart TVs connected over a local WiFi network. This app comes very handy when you want to control your TV which is not in line of sight of your TV remote control or just want to use your mobile phone/tablet to control the TV. Setting up a TV  is very easy using auto scan feature . Once the TV is setup, you are all set to start using the app as a remote control. A traditional remote controls makes use of infra red technology and it needs to be in the line of sight of the TV receiver to work. But this app make use of WiFi technology which give it flexibility of controlling the TV as long as the mobile & TV is connected to WiFi network. It just works even if the TV is behind a wall. The App provides very easy to use options to switch between channels and separate remotes with media controls, smart hub features and a numeric key pad if you want to navigate to a channel through its number. The App also provides a home screen widget with volume controls and channel navigation options. I use  this App to control Samsung E Series Smart Tv at home and it works very well. I’m impressed by the ease at which it allows to setup a TV, support for multiple TVs, controlling the TV though I’m not in the line of sight and using volume buttons of smart phone to control volume of TV. What’s annoying and missing with the app As advertised the app works very well in controlling Samsung TVs (B-, C-, D- E-, and F-Series) except it is very painful to move mouse pointer while browsing web on TV. When you try to move mouse pointer using the App, it mouse painfully slow especially. I gave us using the app to control mouse pointer after trying couple of times. I installed this App thinking that it may help me browse web on Smart TVs, especially a key board support to type web urls. App does not supports entering text either while browsing web or searching through Smart TV apps like YouTube, App Store etc. Developers of this App never advertised keyboard support so no complaints about this. But it would be very helpful if the developers allow this app use as a keyboard and rescue me from the pain of typing text using TV Remote control.     I've apache2 and tomcat6 running on port 80 on ubuntu server 9.10. I've a registered domain name and I'll access the jsp index page navigating to http://abc.mydomain.com. The page is under tomcat_home/webapps/myapp and the below are tomcat virtual hosting in server.xml file: <Host name="abc.mydomain.com" debug="0" appBase="webapps" unpackWARs="true"> <Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger" directory="logs" prefix="virtual_log1." suffix=".log" timestamp="true"/> <Context path="" docBase="/usr/share/tomcat/webapps/myapps" debug="0" reloadable="true"/> </Host> Recently a new domain has been bought(xyz.mydomain.com) and I'm asked to do the virtual hosting so that the new domain name directly points the page "admin.jsp" which is located under 'tomcat_home/webapps/myapps/WE-INF/js/'. How could I do this? If I type http://abc.mydomain.com/admin I'll get the page what I wanted. I should access the page just by typing http://xyz.mydomain.com.

  • External Video Hosting - will it eat my bandwidth?

    I hav asked this question before, on serverfault, but have been unable to get a clear answer or spammy ones. A client runs a website with limited bandwidth per month (10gb) but wants his users to be able to download hq videos. Now if he would rent hosting space on amazon, for example, the downloads would still go through his website right? So would this then still eat his bandwidth then, or not? It there a way to circumvent this? How do you do this, if you have limited bandwidth? If you are kind enough to answer, please don't spam me with what is good and not good hosting, I already know.

    I'm wondering what's the best option for me if I want to move all my hosted websites (from a hosting company) to a server at my own home? Basically, the needs I have are: be able to host websites using PHP/ASP.NET (haven't really decided yet - both would be preferred!) enable FTP so I can create accounts for my family members to access the server for file handling SSH SSL - for secure connections (this is something you have to buy/apply for per domain, not sure if there are any server side settings that have to be made) be able to stream video remote desktop host home-brew applications that can run as services use either MySQl/SQLite/SQL for relational database storage What should I think of before I buy a server? What hardware will I need, what will limit my server? I basically want to learn networking better as I'm a software and web developer but haven't had the resources to acquire any serious toys until now. At the time of writing, most of my websites have 60 visits/day so I don't suspect them to be very demanding. Is there something I haven't thought of that I should have?   • Switching hosting from Google Apps to GoDaddy

    I am in a pickle here. I just bought a hosting service from GoDaddy and I already have a domain registered with Google Apps. So I went into the domain control center from Google Apps and I changed the nameservers to point to GoDaddy's and then I deleted all the A records and also removed the www and main CNAME. Then I created an A record with host "@" which points to the IP address I got from GoDaddy (this is the server address I see under the category Server in the GoDaddy Hosting Control Center). Also, I see that in this domain center, the domain forwarding is set to forward to my address "www.domainsite.com". So right now when I go to my website I see the error "This website is temporarily unavailable, please try again later." Does anyone know how to set this up properly or know what problem I could be having? Thanks!

  • What's the best way to explain branching (of source code) to a client?

    The situation is that a client requested a number of changes about 9 months ago which they then put on hold with them half done. They've now requested more changes without having made up their mind to proceed with the first set of changes. The two sets of changes will require alterations to the same code modules. I've been tasked with explaining why them not making a decision about the first set of changes (either finish them or bin them) may incur additional costs (essentially because the changes would need to be made to a branch then if they proceed with the first set of changes we'd have to merge them to the trunk - which will be messy - and retest them). The question I have is this: How best to explain branching of code to a non-technical client?

    An interrupted installation of updates resulted in ubuntuone-control-panel-qt breaking and now I cannot install or update anything. There seems to be an error in python2.7 - ImportError: No module named _sysconfigdata_nd dpkg: error processing archive ubuntuone-control-panel-qt_13.09-0ubuntu1_all.deb (--install): When I try to reinstall the package via .deb a dpkg --audit yields: The following packages are in a mess due to serious problems during installation.
