  • Ubuntu on Oracle VirtualBox: Shared folders

    I looked at this question, but it didn't help. I'm running Windows 7 as a host with Ubuntu 10.10 as a guest with VBox 4.0. I want to have a shared directory between the two. I have installed Guest Additions. I went to the VBox control panel in Windows, added a Shared Folder (sharename Shared_Folder), and chose "Auto Mount". A directory named "sf_Shared_Folder" appeared in /media on Ubuntu, but when I put files in that directory from an OS, I can't see them on the other one. I then tried to create a directory without automounting (sharename collectivefiles), and to run the following command: foo@foo-VirtualBox:~$ sudo mount -t vboxsf collectivefiles FileShare /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device What is causing this error? I rebooted both the VM and VBox itself, but I'm still observing this.

  • I cannot boot Ubuntu from WUBI install with windows 7, get an error message every time

    i have tried several times to install ubuntu using wubi, i can't use a disc as i have a notebook computer and there is no optical drive. the download and installation all seem to work well but whenever i try to boot ubuntu at the windows 7/ubuntu menu it comes up with this error screen. I have used both the C: drive and the D: drive to install Ubuntu several times each, it's always unsuccessful. "Windows has failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer Choose your language settings and then click 'next' Click repair your computer. If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000000F Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt." I use an ASUS x501a with windows 7. What do i do to fix this? I want to be able to dual boot Windows 7 and ubuntu. Thanks a lot :)

  • PHP processes run one at a time, always taking 100% of one core

    We have seven websites written in PHP running on a Windows 2008 server with IIS 7.5. They are all very slow right now. When I look in Task Manager, I see around 10 php-cgi.exe processes, and they are all taking 0% of the CPU, except one, which is taking 25%. It's a quad-core server, so it's taking 100% of one core. If I watch for a few seconds, the process taking 25% will go to 0%, and a different php-cgi.exe process will jump to 25%. So all the php-cgi.exe processes are just lined up, waiting on a single core, and each process uses 100% of the processor when it can. Each of the 7 sites is in its own application pool in IIS, and we're using FastCGI. The PHP version is 5.3. Any ideas? Thanks!

    I upgraded my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and wanted to reinstall Ubuntu alongside Windows 8. However, I read in many places that Windows 8 causes many new problems with the installation through WUBI, and doesn't work on computers pre-installed with Windows 8 because of a problem in the BiOS or something of that sort. Does it work on computers that were upgraded to Windows 8? I'd like to get a confirmation before I go ahead and try to install it. Thanks!

    I have a Debian based box in my house that runs as a webserver, and a 4GB bootable usb-stick with Ubuntu. I need to store stuff on a server and Ubuntu One seems an ok way to go but I find that 2GB is not sufficient. I can most likely solve that when I install this server software. Where can I find it - there is no ubuntu-one-server package or similar in the Software Centre. How can I install the Ubuntu One server software or an alternative?

  • How can I choose a different Ubuntu One default local folder?

    I would like to tell Ubuntu One to sync with '~/Public/Ubuntu One' rather than '~/Ubuntu One'. Since I'm using it on Arch Linux, I don't have any right-click option for that. I tried to edit ~/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf and add the line root_dir = ~/new/folder (as suggested in this thread), but the file is automatically reverted to its previous state. Also, the command u1sdtool hangs and does apparently nothing - I have to use Ctrl + C to close it. Is there another way to setup the default Ubuntu One default local folder?

  • VMware player unity with ubuntu 11.10 guest on W7 host - empty applications start menu

    I am trying to run Ubuntu 11.10 as a guest on Windows 7. When I enter into unity mode, the menu for the guest os, next to the Windows start menu is empty. I have searched around the web for a fix for this, but there doesn't seem to be anything that works. I have tried restarting the guest os several times, I am running VMware player as an admin, but the guest start menu in unity mode is still empty. I have tried clearing the VM cache. I have installed all the Ubuntu updates and the VMware tools. Has anyone had this problem?

    Hi, I have a system that has to be formatted often because of the specific use of it (Use it in internet cafe). I have to install the drivers and apps each time. That is a time consuming and cumbersom task for me. I want to install windows, drivers, apps etc. once and create a backup of the entire C:\ drive, and keep it in a linux partition so that I can restore the OS with all the apps & drivers ready to go! I have ubuntu live CD with me and I have created a linux partition (ext4) in the HDD. My question is: How can I create an image of the C:\ drive (ntfs disk) in Ubuntu and store it in the linux partition?

    I used to have a dual boot in one of my hard disk drives - Ubuntu and Windows 7. Then, I added a SSD which is now my main hard disk drive, and I'm using it for Windows 7 completely, keeping Ubuntu in the old HD. I restored the Grub so everything works ok, except for one thing. Everytime I update the grub, it detects two windows: Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1 Obviously, I don't want it to detect the Windows on sdb1. Because I no longer use it (I manually deleted the files). What can I do about that without wiping out completely the partition?

    In Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 there are new Events categorized under "Applications and Services Logs". There is also a subfolder called Microsoft which has tons of subfolders as well. Is there any way to collect these events through WMI? For the regular "Windows Logs" such as Application and Security, it is possible to use the Win32_NTLogEvent WMI class in the cimv2 namespace. However, this class does not provide access to the new Microsoft event logs. Any ideas?

    When Windows 7 is configured to automatically update at a certain time (say Friday 5pm), is that also when it tries to download updates, or does it pull in the updates throughout the week, and only installs them at the update time? UPDATE: So I actually want the machines to download during one set of times (9am-3pm Mon-Fri), but install during another set of times (e.g. 5pm Friday). Is there a way to achieve this?

  • Dual booting windows 8/ubuntu 12.04. Grub doesn't appear and machine never boot in ubuntu

    i got a new ACER predator AG3620-UR308 which came with windows 8, so i wanted to run ubuntu 12.04.2 on it as a dual booting. To be honest, i've been doing dual booting for a while now so, i did the right thing. the box came with 2TB HDD. so i made 4 partitions with a raw partition just after the windows installation partition I always do manual installation so even if ubuntu didn't detect windows 8, it was ok for me. So i created swap area and finished the installation etc....Grub was install on the only drive there which is sda. After reboot, grub doesn't even come up.So it always boot in windows 8. I did repeat the installation process twice and yield same result. which is weird because this method always works for me so far.Even the laptop am using to write this post is a dual booting windows 7/ mint nadia installed the same way. Is there anything new in windows 8 that i didn't make provision for? Before starting the installation, all i read about was that , windows 8 should be installed first and ubuntu after. I went ahead and disable secure boot from the BIOS and enabled CSM (don't even know what it means) according to Acer custhelp site . The server uses a self-signed certificate, and connecting from home I get a warning about that, but connecting from work I just get the logon error.

  • I install Ubuntu 13.10 and reboot and im on KDE desktop?

    Hi I'm Jacob and I have no idea what's going on. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 today and was playing around with it for a while and dl'd a bunch of apps from software center and stuff. Eventually I installed steam and (finally) got it working. I downloaded TF2 and had some weird issue where the screen got so distorted to the point I could not play. So I dl'd a driver for my graphics card from the additional drivers app (or whatever it's called) and when it was done I restarted my computer (because it said to.) When the PC booted up it loaded the KDE desktop and I have no idea why. I had unity before I rebooted. Ubuntu 13.10 is the only OS installed on my PC, and I still have all the apps that I downloaded, but I kinda like unity (I started using Ubuntu after they switched to unity) and want it back.     I have an old desktop that I'm trying to set up as a home backup/print server. Backup was trivial, but am having issues getting the printing to work. The printer is connected to the server running Ubuntu Server 9.10 (no gui). If I access the printer via http://hostname:631/printers/, I am able to print a test page, so I know the printer is working; however, I am having no luck from Windows. Windows can see the printer when browsed via \hostname\, but I am unable to connect. Windows says "Windows cannot connect to the printer" without indicating why. Any suggestions? The server is part of a domain but my account is local, so I'm logging in using a username of the form hostname\username. None of the clients are part of a domain. The server uses a self-signed certificate, and connecting from home I get a warning about that, but connecting from work I just get the logon error.

  • Windows 7 64-bit installation from alternative media (no DVD/USB Flash drive)

    Greetings I currently have Windows 7 x86 installed on my computer. I want to install Windows 7 x64 on a different partition on my computer. However there is a little issue, I cannot run the x64 install from Windows 7 x86 which I currently have. I was planning to Install Windows 7 x64 on another partition to then boot up from that partition to install it on the partition I actually want my OS on. Once that is complete I could just format the partition from the Windows 7 x64 that I didn't need anymore. But the installer will not run from the x86 version of Windows 7 even though I do not want to upgrade that Windows directly. The reason I'm doing this in such a weird way is that my optical drive is broken and I'm really not into buying a new one since I would use it like once every year or so. I also don't have a USB Flash Drive which is big enough to hold the installation files. As far as I'm aware I cannot use an external hard drive such as this one, which I do have. Are there any alternatives in which I can install Windows 7 x64 or am I forced into buying a USB Flash Drive or new optical drive? Thank you in advance for your replies. Edit: This picture shows my current partitions on my laptop. I want to get Windows 7 x64 on the C partition but have to install it first on the F partition to then boot up the F partition windows to format C and install x64 on that one. My external drive is J. Edit 2: No alternative computer which has a DVD drive, install files are located on an iso from MA3D. To install my 32 bit version I mounted the ISO in Daemon Tools to replace my Windows Vista but since I cannot run 64 bit into my 32 bit OS this doesn't work.

  • How do I change the console resolution of Ubuntu 9.10 Server running on VMWare?

    I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Server in VMWare Fusion (on a Mac) and I'm having trouble changing the console resolution. It seems to be stuck on 640x480. Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub2, so there is no /etc/grub/menu.lst. I tried adding vga=791 to the kernel parameters (both during boot and by adding it to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub and then running update-grub2) and neither had any effect. When using vga=791, grub says that vga=791 is depreciated and that I should use gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768 instead. However, that also does absolutely nothing. I have a feeling this problem is specific to running Ubuntu 9.10 in VMWare, but Google hasn't turned up anything.

    I'm trying to port ubuntu touch to Samsung Galaxy S Plus but I'm finding it really difficult. The problems at first were to find a good CM rom as base, because this device is not officially supported by CM. Currently I'm using EhndroixIII but now I'm founding a lot of problems with the porting guide. In particular my file tree seems totally different from the one of the guide.   • Ubuntu Desktop Password

    I inherited a machine with Ubuntu desktop installed. It has a password in place and I have no idea what the password may be. I cannot get to the command line to use the methods I have found online. No matter how many times I press "Shift" during the boot process it still goes all the way to the desktop login. I never see grub. I am not sure which version I have but I think may be 9 or 10. Thanks Doug

    Hello everyone, the organization I work at wants to create a custom Ubuntu LiveCD, the customizations are: Pre-installed programs, plugins, some device drivers, and aesthetics such as icons and backgrounds, as well as changing Firefox's homepage and removing unneeded packages. Not big changes, obviously, and we wish to distribute this custom image for clients to use as a bootable CD or USB stick in order to have a quick environment where all our tools are available instantly. What are the licensing and legal consequences of this? What if some of the programs or plugins that are to be pre-packaged are not GPL'd? I should finally note that we are not changing any code in the kernel or any other distro component. Thank you for your time!

    I've installed ubuntu touch on my galaxy nexus following the tutorial on the official site. However the latter is not so clear.. In particular, during the installation, user action on the phone is requested and not documented on the tutorial: 1) The phone asked me whether rebooting, wiping the cache or something else (i did nothing and the phone rebooted) 2) The phone asked me whether replacing or not cmw (or something similar). I asked no.. After the installation all seemed to work correctly. However after shutting down the phone can't power on anymore... When I push the power button the battery icon appears, showing that the battery is completely charged. What am I supposed to do?
