  This year the Summit registration opens at 6PM on Sunday at the Seattle convention center.  Last year we had a dozen people hanging out, watching the twitter feed on the big monitor and catching up.  All we really needed was a bar and we’d have our own little party going. So this year I’m adding a bar.  I’ve arranged for a cash bar and some stand up tables.  I’m buying the first round for the first 40 or so people that come by.  Come by, register and say Hi.  I’d especially like to encourage first-time attendees to stop by.  This is a low key way to meet some people that will be at the conference.

• How to add a shortcut for Humble Bundle games in Unity?

  I downloaded some games from the humblebundle, but most of them don't have deb files. They run fine after extracting them and double clicking on the executable, but unity doesn't automatically find them so I can't search for them, or add them to the side bar. I tried to drag the executable onto the side bar, but it just dimmed and didn't do anything once I dropped it. I also tried to right-click on the executable in and clicked on "Make Link", but I couldn't drop that onto the side bar either. I would prefer a solution that does not require using the terminal or editing configuration files by hand if possible.

  After I installed the GNOME shell in Ubuntu, I decided that I didn't like having the "Close/Minimize/Maximize" buttons on the right, so I switched them over to the left using gconftool-2 --set "/apps/metacity/general/button_layout" --type string "close, minimize, maximize:" After resetting the shell, however, I found that with the GTK+ theme, only the close button shows up. Using system title bar and borders will make all the buttons appear, but I really want to use the theme because the system title bar makes the top bar too thick. Logging out and back in didn't fix it, and I tried reinstalling Chrome, but the problem persists.

  I'm having some trouble finding a proper solution to the following architecture problem. In our setting (sketched below) we have 2 data sources, where data source A is the primary source for items of type Foo. A secondary data source exists which can be used to retrieve additional information on a Foo; however this information does not always exist. Furthermore, data source A can be used to retrieve items of type Bar. However, each Bar refers to a Foo. The difficulty here is that each Bar should refer to a Foo which, if available, also contains the information as augmented by data source B. My question is: how to remove the tight coupling between data source A and B?

• IE HTML Debugger Causing Issues with IE Enhanced Security

  In an effort to debug a Silverlight component on a page in SharePoint I opened the Developer Tools in Internet Explorer.  After choosing the Find > Select Element by Click option my page refreshed for some reason and a small bar appeared at the top of the page reading: You may be trying to access this site from a secured browser on the server. Please enable scripts and reload this page. After a quick look around the internet, some seemed to be suggesting that you have to disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC) in Server Manager.  Since this is one of the very first things I do when creating a VM, I figured the solution did not apply to me.  However, I decided to go ahead and enable IE ESC and then disable it again to see if that would fix the problem, and it did.  So if you see that error message in IE, the bar and you've already got IE ESC disabled, you can just enable it and disable it to get rid of the bar.

• Maximal screen resolution for external monitor breaks desktop

  Whenever I'm plugging in my external monitor into my notebook and changing the screen resolution to the maximum state, the desktop will get broken in a way: A third of the whole desktop space is not visible at all. I can see the whole panel as well as the Unity side bar to the left, but the desktop space with all the windows in it is not completely visible. It's blanked out. In case of opening the Unity menu bar, I can type something in it. As soon as close the menu bar, the upper part stays visible and hangs: Any ideas about that issue?

• How to display time in the top panel?

  I thought I already had the time up there in the top bar, and it may have been so in previous Ubuntu versions (don't remember, my Ubuntu laptop is just one of three computers I use). Only that I just noticed - me being someone who never wears a watch, has the cellphone turned off 95% of the time and relying on the computer to tell the time - that there is no time being displayed anywhere, and I had expected it in the top bar on the Unity desktop. I searched around but found no obvious solution, but I'm sure someone immediately knows how I can get my time (back?) into the top bar?

• Segment subdomains with Google Analytics?

  So, when a website has multiple subdomains: www.example.com foo.example.com bar.example.com What is the best way to use Google Analytics to segment the data? I would prefer have access to 'All Data', 'Data from foo.example.com', and 'Data from bar.example.com'. I tried setting up 3 different views, and setting a filter on the foo/bar views that says: Include only traffic from the ISP domain that are equal to foo.example.com. However, I am not seeing any data collected into that View. I do, however, see all data in the 'All Data' view, but I can't figure out how to segment the data. I am including the analytics.js in the application.haml layout, which is always loaded in this app. Thanks!

• Should I use events in this case?

  I'm creating a video player, like a custom YouTube player. All of the GUI elements (progress bar, video player, play button, ...) are different classes, but I obviously need them to communicate. When the progress bar is clicked, or the slider is moved, it needs to send a "seek(x)" command to the video player. Similarly, the video player needs to update the progressbar every frame. Currently I'm doing this by having almost all elements have a link to each other. So when I create the progress bar, I'm telling it where the video player is. But after a while this becomes more and more complicated, and I'm wondering if events would be a better way to do this. Or a main controller class that has all the connections. What should I do?

• How to have the game world get rendered on just a part of the screen?

  I am implementing a game on both Desktop and Android. The Desktop version will just rely on the keyboard to handle the user input on the game screen, whilst the Android one will have to have a set of buttons placed in a bar at the bottom of the game screen, using a Stage. Consequently, I am expecting the game world to take up the entire space available on the Desktop screen, whilst on Android it should expand to the entire width of the screen, and to the screen height minus the height of the buttons bar I've mentioned. What would be an appropriate approach of handling space sharing between the game world and the buttons bar? Thank you.

• JavaScript Browser Hacks

  Recently during one of my client side scripting classes, I was trying to show my students some basic examples of JavaScript as an introduction to the language.  My first basic example was to show an alert box using JavaScript via the address bar. The student’s reaction to my browser hack example really caught me off guard in a good way. After programming with a language for close to 10 years you start to lose the "Awe Cool!" effect that new learners of a language experience when writing code. New learns of JavaScript are the reason why I created this post. Please enjoy. Note: Place JavaScript in to address bar and then press the enter key. Example 1: JavaScript Alert box displaying My name: John Doe Javascript:alert('My name: \n John Doe') ; Example 2: JavaScript alert box displaying name entered by user. javascript:alert('My name: \n ' + prompt('Enter Name','Name')) ; Example 3: JavaScript alert box displaying name entered by user, and then displays the length of the name. javascript:var name= prompt('Enter Name','Name'); alert('My name: \n ' + name); alert(name.length); If you notice, the address bar will execute JavaScript on the current page loaded in the browser using the Document Object Model (DOM). • View Mobile Websites in Windows with Safari 4 Developer Tools

  Want to try out mobile websites designed for the iPhone and other mobile devices on your PC?  Safari 4 for Windows lets you do this easily with their developer tools. By default, Safari will show standard desktop websites.  But by making a simple change, you can switch it to work like Safari Mobile on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Getting Started First make sure you have Safari 4 for Windows installed.  You can download Safari directly (link below) and install it as usual.   Or if you already have another Apple program installed, such as QuickTime or iTunes, then you can install it from Apple Software update.  Simply enter apple software update in the Start menu search box. And then select Safari 4 from the list of new software available.  Click Install to automatically download and install Safari. Accept the license Agreement, and then Safari will automatically install. Once this is finished, Safari will be ready to use. View Mobile Sites in Safari First, we need to enable the developer tools.  Click the gear icon on the toolbar, and select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab, and then check the box that says “Show Develop menu in menu bar”. Once you’ve closed your settings box, click the page icon, select Develop, then User Agent, and then choose one of the Mobile Safari settings.  In our test we chose Mobile Safari 3.1.2 – iPhone. To make your browser emulate a mobile device better, you can hide the bookmarks and tab bar to have a more streamlined interface. Click the Gear icon, and select “Hide Bookmarks Bar”, and then repeat and click “Hide Tab Bar”. You can also shrink your window to be closer to the size of a mobile device screen.  Once you’ve done these things, Safari should look similar to this screenshot.  Here we have loaded Google.com, and you can see it in its iPhone-style interface. Simply enter any website into the address bar, and it will load in its mobile interface if it has one.  Here is Google’s other mobile offerings, right inside Windows. Gmail loads messages with the default iPhone interface. One especially interesting mobile site is Apple’s online iPhone User Guide.  When loaded in Safari with the iPhone setting, it loads with a very nice mobile UI that works just like an iPhone app.  In fact, you can even click and drag to scroll, just like you would with your finger on an iPhone. Conclusion Even if you do not have a Smartphone, you can still preview what websites will look like on them with this trick. Not all sites will work of course, but it’s fun to play around with different sites that have mobile versions. • Introducing the Metro User Interface on Windows 2012

  Although I am a big fan of using PowerShell to do many of my server operations, that aspect is well covered by those far more knowledgeable than I, and there is vast information around the web already on that. The new Metro interface, and getting around both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 though is relatively new, even for those whop ran the previews. What is this? A blank Desktop!   Where did the start button go? Well, it is still there...sort of. It is hidden, and acts like an auto hidden component that appear only when the mouse is hovered over the lower left corner of the screen. Those familiar with Gnome or OSX can relate this to the "Hot Corners" functions. To get to the start button, hover your mouse in the very left corner of the task bar. Let it sit there a moment, and a small blue square with colored tiles in it called start will appear. Click it. I clicked it and now I have all the tiles..What is this?   Welcome to the Metro interface. This is a much more modern look, and although at first seems weird and cumbersome, I have actually found that it is a bit more extensible, allowing greater organization and customization than the older explorer desktop. If you look closely, you'll see each box represents either a program, or program group. First, a few basics about using the start view. First and foremost, a right mouse click will bring up a bar on the bottom, with an icon towards the right. Notice it is titled “All Apps”. An even easier way in many places is to hover your mouse in the exact opposite corner, in the upper right. A sidebar will open and expose what used to be a widget bar (remember Vista?), and there are options for Search, Start, and Settings.   Ok Great, but where is everything? It’s all there…Click the All Apps icon.   Look better? Notice the scroll bar at the bottom. Move it right..your desktop is sized to your content..so you can have a smaller, or larger amount of programs exposed. Each icon can be secondary clicked (right mouse click for most of us, and an options bar at the bottom, rather than the old small context menu, is opened with some very familiar options.   Notice the top of the Windows Explorer window has some new features. You still have your right mouse click functions, but since the shortcuts for these items already exist..just copy them. There are many ways, but here is a long way to show you more of the interface. 1. Right mouse click a program icon, and select the Open File Location option. 2. Trusty file manager opens…but if you look closely up at top edge of the window, you’ll see a nifty enhancement. An orange colored box that is titled Shortcut Tools and another lavender box Title Application tools. Each of these adds options at the top of the file manager window to make selection easy. Of course, you can still secondary click an item in the listing window too. 3. Click shortcut tools, right click your app shortcut and copy it. Then simply paste it into the desktop outside the File Explorer window Also note some of the newer features. The large icons up top below the menu that has many common operations. The options change as you select each menu item. Well, that’s it for this installment. I hope this helps you out.

Example: Source URL is http://domain1.com/news Target URL is http://domain2.com/news I want to render pages from http://domain2.com/news/ but have http://domain1.com/news appear in the address bar. • Changing the default UITabBarController background color.

  Hello, So I have an iPhone application running that is controlled at the highest level by a UITabBarController. It is the default black Tab Bar at the bottom that you see in many iPhone apps. I am kind of new to iPhone SDK programming, and I know I have seen other apps that have their own background color for the Tab Bar at the bottom. I am not sure if they are using this tab bar as I am, as the main controller for their app, but the question applies to this: How do I change the background color of the main UITabBarController in my application? I wanted to change it to a dark shade of green similar to the colors of the navigation bars and labels I have placed in my app. I find it weird how Apple makes it really easy to change the color of Navigation Bars (not controllers), and other things, but when it comes to controllers (in this case a Tab Bar Controller), I cannot find a single way to implement this cleanly and efficiently.   I have a UITabBarController with a "More" tab whose color scheme I would like to modify. Navigation Controller Nav Bar Colors I've been able to change the background color of the "More" tab's UINavigationController by subclassing the UITabBarController and adding the following code to the ViewDidLoad method: UINavigationController *moreController = self.moreNavigationController; moreController.navigationBar.tintColor = [UIColor redColor]; I would also like to change the Nav controller's text color but have not been able to determine how to accomplish this. Table View Highlight Colors I'd like to disable or change the highlight color for the "More" tab's UITableView. I don't want to disable the ability to select, I just want to change or remove the blue highlight color. I see where I can change the SelectedTextColor property for a UITableViewCell's texLabel, but I'm unsure how or when this needs to be set given I'm not the table view's datasource. Edit View Nav Bar Color When the Edit button is selected, the nav bar at the top reverts to the basic blue color. Is there any way to access this nav bar to change its tint color?

• How to resolve symbolic links in a shell script

  Given an absolute or relative path (in a Unix-like system), I would like to determine the full path of the target after resolving any intermediate symlinks. Bonus points for also resolving ~username notation at the same time. If the target is a directory, it might be possible to chdir() into the directory and then call getcwd(), but I really want to do this from a shell script rather than writing a C helper. Unfortunately, shells have a tendency to try to hide the existence of symlinks from the user (this is bash on OS X): $ ls -ld foo bar drwxr-xr-x 2 greg greg 68 Aug 11 22:36 bar lrwxr-xr-x 1 greg greg 3 Aug 11 22:36 foo -> bar $ cd foo $ pwd /Users/greg/tmp/foo $ What I want is a function resolve() such that when executed from the tmp directory in the above example, resolve("foo") == "/Users/greg/tmp/bar".

• SmartGWT - Update ListGridRecord dynamically

  I am using SmartGWT and I have a ListGrid populated with an array of ListGridRecords using the setData() call. I am trying to update a progress property of a single record (on a timer for testing) and have it update in the browser. I have tried various combinations of draw(), redraw(), markForRedraw() etc. to no avail. I also tried overriding the updateRecordComponent() method in my table class, but it only gets called when the records are first created (after createRecordComponent()). I should note that I do NOT want to accomplish this by binding to a DataSource. I just want to be able to update the attribute on the client-side. • Ruby JSON.pretty_generate ... is pretty unpretty

  I can't seem to get JSON.pretty_generate() to actually generate pretty output in Rails. I'm using Rails 2.3.5 and it seems to automatically load the JSON gem. Awesome. While using script/console this does indeed produce JSON: some_data = {'foo' => 1, 'bar' => 20, 'cow' => [1, 2, 3, 4], 'moo' => {'dog' => 'woof', 'cat' => 'meow'}} some_data.to_json => "{\"cow\":[1,2,3,4],\"moo\":{\"cat\":\"meow\",\"dog\":\"woof\"},\"foo\":1,\"bar\":20}" But this doesn't produce pretty output: JSON.pretty_generate(some_data) => "{\"cow\":[1,2,3,4],\"moo\":{\"cat\":\"meow\",\"dog\":\"woof\"},\"foo\":1,\"bar\":20}" The only way I've found to generate it is to use irb and to load the Pure version: require 'rubygems' require 'json/pure' some_data = {'foo' => 1, 'bar' => 20, 'cow' => [1, 2, 3, 4], 'moo' => {'dog' => 'woof', 'cat' => 'meow'}} JSON.pretty_generate(some_data) => "{\n \"cow\": [\n 1,\n 2,\n 3,\n 4\n ],\n \"moo\": {\n \"cat\": \"meow\",\n \"dog\": \"woof\"\n },\n \"foo\": 1,\n \"bar\": 20\n}" BUT, what I really want is Rails to produce this.
