• Lubuntu customized cdrom installation crashes

  I have created customized live cd of lubuntu and it is customized using uck. After burning the CDROM and using the cdrom for installation of same CD the installation works fine on HP desktop but it fails on Dell desktop. Here is the error. • apache not starting in vagrant vm

  I used Puphpet.com to create a Vagrant VM to be used for web development. The problem I am having is that the VM cannot start apache on boot. $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start * Starting web server apache2 * * The apache2 configtest failed. Output of config test was: apache2: Syntax error on line 36 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/authz_default.load: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_default.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_default.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. the system is ubuntu 12, not sure what modifications I have to make to the puppet config to fix the problem.

• HP Envy dv6t-7300: Disabled WiFi through button and can't enable it anymore

  Well, I have a HP Envy dv6t-7300 laptop that came with a Ralink RT5390 WiFi card. Everything was working perfectly, and eventually I press the WiFi button in my keyboard to toggle the card on/off. Until today, all worked right: if the wifi was off (wifi LED amber) and I press the wifi button, after a few seconds the LED turn white and everything works. If I repeat the process, the wifi LED turn amber and the card get disabled, but now, I can't turn it on anymore. running sudo rfkill list all I get: 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes So, I ran sudo rfkill unblock all but nothing changed. As a side note, if I run sudo ifconfig wlan0 up, the indicator LED gets white (indicating that the card was enabled), but Ubuntu still say that the card is blocked by hardware. Extra information: the card works without issues in windows and in Ubuntu installer (booting from a live CD). I'm using the card out-of-box, using the drivers already included in Ubuntu 12.10. The module rt2800pci is loaded and working fine, not blacklisted, etc, etc. The card and the button toggle worked flawlessly until today, when I toggled it off and can't turn it on anymore... The problem is back, but in a different manner: if I don't press the wifi key a few times during the grub loading, in the login screen the wifi button will be ambar (disabled), pressing it will toggle it white (enabled) or ambar (disabled) again, but ubuntu still says that the network card was disabled by hardware and doesn't connect... In other words, if I don't press the WiFi button a few times when Ubuntu is booting, it will be stuck with the "network card was disabled by hardware" message, even if the light is white (enabled). Any clue? Maybe a error in some startup script or config file?

• Belgrade Open Source Software Development Center

  A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. • Thoughts (on Windows Phone 7) from the MVP Summit

  Last week I packed off to Redmond, WA for my annual pilgrimage to Microsoft's MVP Summit. I'll spare you all the silly taunting about knowing stuff I can't talk about, etc... and just get to the point. I'm a XNA/DirectX MVP, an ASP Insider and a Languages (VB) Insider... so I actually had access to a pretty broad spectrum of information over the last week. Most of my time was focused on Windows Phone 7 related sessions, and while I can't dig deep into specifics, I can say that Microsoft is definitely not out of the fight for Mobile. The things I saw tell me that Microsoft is listening and paying attention to feedback, looking at what works & what doesn't and they are working their collective asses off to close the gap between Google and Apple. Anyone who has been in this industry for a while can tell you Microsoft does their best work when they are the underdog. They are currently behind, and have a lot of work ahead of them, but this is when they bring all their resources together to solve a problem. After the week I spent in Redmond, and the feedback I heard from other MVPs, and the technological previews I saw... I feel confident in betting heavily on Microsoft to pull this off.

• How to get Apache web server to run on other computers?

  I have been using Apache Web Server for a while now and one thing I have noticed is that outside of my computer I can not access it. I use my Apache server for PHP development on my computer, but I would like to access stuff I have made outside of my computer. I am on a linksys router network. I usually run it of http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/. I IPCONFIGED my computer and got 192.168.1.105 so I went there with my browser and got the page just fine. I tried doing this on another computer on the same network but it didn't work. How do I fix this? Sorry about the bad wording. • website is accessible through dns1. but not with WWW

  i have a domain and i am using freehostia as a web hoster. In the name server of domain i have registered the name of both servers of freehostia. And in my control panel in the hosted domain section its showing "1 Hosted Domains / 1 Domains Listed".however on clicking on that its showing an error that "The selected domain name has not been registered yet. Please register it from the Domain Manager section first" now whenever i am trying to access my website by using dns1. its accessible but when i am using WWW. its not accessible for example my domain name is example.com if i will type dns1.example.com then my webpage will open but when i type www.example.com its showing "Oops! Google Chrome could not find www.example.com" And for information 24 hours has been passed since i have registered my name servers.

• laptop suddenly became very slow

  I have a compaq laptop. And I've been using it 2 years now. Then this day, it suddenly became very slow. It almost took 5 minutes from turning on to the log on screen. I click my username and it took 3 minutes to show the desktop. I click on my computer then properties to see if it is still showing 2 Ghz for the Core 2 duo processor. And 2gb for the memory. It took 10 minutes for all the information to show up. And its still 2gb and 2Ghz. So I may conclude that this is not a problem in memory or cpu. Its still running perfectly last night. And I have not seen signs of it failing. Things I already tried: Rebooting Shutdown then turn on again So how do I determine what causes this problem? How do I fix it?

• Mount encrypted hfs in ubuntu

  I try to mount an encrypted hfs+ partition in ubuntu. An older post described quite good how to do it, but lacks the information how to use encrypted partitions. What I found so far is: # install required packages sudo apt-get install hfsprogs hfsutils hfsplus loop-aes-utils # try to mount it mount -t hfsplus -o encryption=aes-256 /dev/xyz /mount/xyz But once I run this I get the following error: Error: Password must be at least 20 characters. So I tried to type it in twice, but that results in this: ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument, requested cipher or key (256 bits) not supported by kernel Any suggestions? Thx Edit: One thing I'm not sure about is whether I use the right password. My assumption is that it is my default one for these situations. But I'm not sure whether Max OSX choose another password (internally) for that.

• Windows XP screen chopped off

  Ok this one has be confused as all get out! One of the teachers at the school I support has a dell latitude e5500 and the desktop shows about 3/4 just fine, but the right 1/4th shows whatever was on the last (like its not refreshing (yes I tried refreshing the screen)) For example if I open up internet explorer then minimize it the left 3/4ths minimizes, but the right 1/4th stays pulled up. Another interesting piece of information is that if I change it to God awful 800x600 it works perfectly fine. The sceen works together and has no problems.... The only way I have found to get rid of this is to reload the laptop and that is getting old quick! Thanks for your help! Msindle

• How do I force a specific MTU for only certain TCP ports?

  Background I have a set of embedded hardware deployed in the field. These remote machines connect back to my servers at AWS running Ubuntu and I use the iptables mangle chain to lower the MTU to 500 so these devices are happy. For reference, this is the iptables rule I am using: -A POSTROUTING -p tcp --sport 12345 --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -o eth0 -j TCPMSS --set-mss 500 Current Problem I'm trying to spin up some servers on the Joyent Cloud using SmartOS, but I can't find any information on selectively changing the MTU like I can on Linux (e.g. all info I've found is on changing it globally, which is not what I want). How would I do it so that all connections on TCP port 12345 get the MTU I want?

• Group policy doesn't let me execute Chrome (Win 7)

  where I work the admins just migrated us to Windows 7. They gave me admin rights but still I had to "run as administrator" my Google Chrome installation. After I managed to install it, I realized I even have to go through the 'run as administrator' shortcut every time I have to execute the application. I even edited the properties of the shortcut to check 'always run as administrator' but nothing changed. The message I get when I'm trying to launch Chrome is "This program is blocked by group policy. For more information contact your system administrator"... Is it something I could work out alone or I have to convince them to change the " policy " ?

• Script to gather all the files ending in .log and create a tar.gz file.

  I'm currently using this script line to find all the log files from a given directory structure and copy them to another directy where I can easily compress them. find . -name "*.log" -exec cp \{\} /tmp/allLogs/ \; The problem I have, is, the directory/subdirectory information gets lost because, I'm copying only the file. For instance I have: ./product/install/install.log ./product/execution/daily.log ./other/conf/blah.log And I end up with: /tmp/allLogs/install.log /tmp/allLogs/daily.log /tmp/allLogs/blah.log And I would like to have: /tmp/allLogs/product/install/install.log /tmp/allLogs/product/execution/daily.log /tmp/allLogs/other/conf/blah.log

• Partitioning Strategies for P6 Reporting Database

  Prior to P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1 range partitioning was used. This was applied only to the history tables. The ranges were defined during installation and additional ranges would need to be added once your date range entered the final defined range. As of P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1, interval partitioning was implemented. Interval partitioning was applied to the existing History table as well as Slowly Changing Dimension tables. One of the major advantages of interval partitioning is there is no more manual addition of ranges. The interval partitioning will automatically create partitions for the defined interval when data is inserted into the table and it exceeds the existing partitions. In 3.2 sp1 there are steps on how to update your partitioning. For all versions after 3.2 sp1 interval partitioning is the only partitioning option used. When upgrading it is important to be aware of these changes. • Double Click to open Office docs is slow, File -> Open is fast.

  I have 2 unique networks. They both share similar architecture: Windows 2003 SBS SP2 Running Symantec Endpoint Running Symantec Information Foundation Shared drives off a data partition Clients running Office 2003 or 2007 Connect to file server through mapped drives When users try to open a file from their local PC by double clicking, it will take 30-60 seconds to open. When they do File - Open, those same documents open up almost immediately. So far I've tried the following - CCleaner to parse the registry of outdated mapped drives - Disabled "using DDE" - Disabled A/V - Reboot Any ideas beyond that? Figured this question belongs here instead of SU since its the same issue on different networks.

• problem with using polish keyboard with synergy 1.4.2

  I installed synergy on Windows 7 as server and on Windows Vista as client. On both I can use polish keyboard using local keyboard. When I am using remote keyboard via synergy polish characters are not working (I mean in example S + Alt Gr or S + left Alt + left ctrl) I've used synergy about 1 year ago and I cannot recall that kind of problem so I think the problem is only in current version. Searching through your web site and googled I found only identical problem 5 years ago with information that it was solved. Please help me to sort it out.

  I can't figure out the difference from just the man pages. I can see what is a daemon and one is a client, but what does that mean practically when using the commands? Also what is the difference between the client and daemon in this case, not just the terms (client and daemon) but functionally wise? EDIT: How are the tasks divided, if the client updates the information on the client, what is the purpose of the daemon. I'm talking about the client daemon in this case dhcpcd not dhcpd. Both come installed by default with some versions of Linux and seem to share the duties of the dhcp client. • Office 2010 Client &ndash; Should I go with 32 bit or 64 bit?

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). As you know, Office 2010 client now comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The question is, should you go with 32 bit or 64 bit? 64 is bigger than 32 .. so 64 is better no? NO! Given a choice, or unless you have a very strong reason not to – GO WITH 32 bit. Why is that? Here is why - 32 bit apps actually work better on 64 bit OS’s in most scenarios due to WoW, and the additional 64 bit VLSW calculations. If you have 2007 installations to support, SharePoint designer 2010 cannot be used to work with SharePoint 2007 sites. So you will have to install SharePoint designer 2007 32bit side by side with SharePoint designer 2010 32 bit side by side. So you cannot mix and match 32 bit and 64 bit here. Of course you can virtualize and not have this problem to begin with :-D. 64 bit office will break many things on your SharePoint experience for that client – example, that fancy datasheet view won’t work on lists. 32 bit office apps don’t have this issue. There are some extreme situations where you DO want 64 bit client apps though. Specifically if you have HUGE excel sheets to work with, then 64 bit office client excel is much better than the equivalent 32 bit excel. Comment on the article ....

• Music Manager that can properly see ID3 ratings tags and synchronize with Android

  I'm moving from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, and so far the experience has been a really good one :) However, there is something that I've used to do with Windows 7 that I can't find how to do in Ubuntu: From my Windows music manager programs (either MediaMonkey or Windows Media Player) I could set song ratings in a way that the ratings set from either program could be also read from the other one. Additionally, song ratings were visible and updated in my iPod Touch when I synch'ed my music (either manually or using iTunes). To sum up, it seems that MediaMonkey, WMP, and the iPod device use standard mp3 metadata tag for ratings. Now, using Ubuntu 12.04, and now with an Android device: Rhythmbox can't see the song rates, despite those ratings can be seen by MediaMonkey and MS Music Player when I boot with Win7. Is this an issue I can fix with some setting? Is there any program I can use to accomplish this? What do you recommend to sync my music with Android (4.0, Galaxy s2), also keeping the song ratings information updated between Android and my PC? Thanks!!

• What are some good resources for creating a game engine in XNA?

  I'm currently a student game programmer working on an indie project. We have a team of eleven people (five programmers, four artists, and two audio designers) aboard, all working hard to help design this game. We've been meeting for months now and so far we have a pretty buffed out Game Design Document as well as much audio/visual concept art. Our programmers are itching to progress on our own end. Each person in our programming team is well versed in C++, but is very familiar with C#. We have enough experience and skill that we're confident that we will be successful with our game, and we're looking to build our own game engine in XNA as it seems like it would be worth our time and effort in the end. The game itself will be a 2D beat 'em up style game to be released over xbox live and the PC. It's play style will be similar to that of Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim vs The World. We want to design the game engine to allow us to better implement our assets into the game as well as to simplify the creation of design elements/mechanics. Currently between our programmers, we have books such as "XNA 4.0" and "Game Coding Complete, Third Edition," but we'd still like more information on both XNA and (especially) building a game engine from scratch. What are any other good books, websites, or resources we could use to further map out and program our game engine?

• fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

  I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)? • yum-updatesd problem

  I am trying to setup yum-updatesd to send email notification when there are updates available to the packages on my system. However, I am not receiving any notifications even though there are updates available (as seen in yum check-update) I have verified that the yum-updatesd service is running.
