• Clone a Red Hat RAID as part of a disaster recovery plan

  I am looking for recommendations to clone a Red Hat mirrored raid to a single hard drive located in the same machine. The idea is if the servers hardware ever has an issue we have a similar hardware machine ready to go. All we would have to do is pop in the cloned drive. If the servers RAID ever failed we could just switch to the single drive to maintain uptime and restore the original configuration on the spare server with a backup. This is a restaurant and they are open 7 days a week. We do have time from 12:am to 9:00am to perform the necessary steps for a clone and we talking about under 10 Gigs of information. There is a database on the server. I have looked into Rsync and Clonezilla. But I am just not confident either is capable of completing the task I want. Looking for some suggestions and possibly a step by step if you could be so kind.

• Forking a GPL dual licensed software with business owned copyrights

  After receiving some threats of the copyrights holder of a dual licensed software(GPL2 and commercial) to buy the commercial version for projects in production, I am thinking to make a fork. In a case of GPL2 and commercially dual licensed with business owned copyrights software, is forking the GPL2 version an option? Also, is forking a good way to deal with such cases? Background information The software is a web CMS released under 2 versions a GPL2 free open source edition and a commercial edition including technical support and extra functionality. The problem is that now, basing their argumentation on the "distribution" definition of the GPL2, the company holding the copyrights argue that delivering the software and some extensions to a client is considered as a "distribution". And that such a "distribution" falls under the GPL2 obligation to release the custom made extension code. Custom made extensions are mainly designs, templates and very specific functionality. Basically they give me 3 choices: Buying the commercial licensed edition for projects based on the GPL in production, Deleting all the projects in production based on GPL2 version, Releasing all the extensions as GPL2 code. The first 2 options are nothing realistic for finished projects. The third option could be fine, but as most of the extensions are very specific, cleaning the code to make it usable by other users means lot of works and also I am not sure the clients will appreciate to have their website designs and specific functionality released publicly. The copyrights holding company even contacted some clients directly, giving them the "choice". I know that this is a very corporate interpretation of GPL2, and a such action is nothing close to legal, but as an independent developer, I don't want to take the risk to get involved in some long and tiring legal procedures. • How to make a text search template?

  I am not really sure what to call this, but I am looking for a way to have a "template" for my code to go by when searching for text. I am working on a project where a summary for a piece of text is supplied to the user. I want to allow the user to select a piece of text on the page so that the next time they come across a similar page I can find the text. For instance, lets say somebody goes to foxnews.com and selects the article like in the image below. Then whenever they go to any other foxnews.com article I would be able to identify the text for the article and summarize it for them. But an issue I see with this is for a site like Stack Exchange where you have multiple comments to be selected (like below) which means that I would have to be able to recursively search for all separate pieces of text. Requirements Be able to keep pieces of text separate from each other. Possible Issues DIV's may not contain ids, classes, or names. A piece of text may span across multiple DIVs How to recognize where an old piece of text ends and a new begins. How to store this information for later searching?

• Why is access to my database very slow?

  I have a mysql database that used to work perfectly fine, but now it is dead slow on startup. When I type in $> mysql -u foo bar I get the following usual message for about 30 seconds before I get a prompt : Reading table information for completion of table and column names You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A Of course, I tried it and it goes a lot faster : $> mysql -u foo bar -A But why do I have to wait so long in regular startup ? This is not a very big database, and data does not seem to be corrupted (everything looks fine after startup). I have no other client connecting to the mysql server at the same time (only one process is shown with the command show full processlist) and I have already restarted the mysqld service. What's going on ?

The client fields are – client’s first name, client’s last name, their street address, suburb and city, their landline number and their cell phone number and their email address. However the user does not always want to see the email address and would like to have a button that will show or hide the email address. • "remote file operation failed" on Hudson

  I am running a Windows slave for Husdon 1.337 (Linux master). When running a project on the Windows node, it fails with the following message: Building remotely on winTestSlave Checking out a fresh workspace because there's no workspace at C:\hudson\***\ejb remote file operation failed It did work yesterday and I have not upgraded Hudson or changed its configurations (or the slave's configurations) in any way. I establish the connection between the slave and the master by running the following command on a cygwim prompt on the slave: java -jar slave.jar -jnlpUrl http://myserver/computer/winTestSlave/slave-agent.jnlp I saw the issue http://issues.hudson-ci.org/browse/HUDSON-5374 and did as instructed in the work-around but that did not work. I also tried with a newer version of slave.jar (version 1.356) but that did not work either. Does anyone please have any idea of how to fix this? I really cannot find more information anywhere else!

• Ubuntu 12.04 Network Manager: unable to save manual setting to set up a static ip

  I am fairly familiar with setting up servers, and ubuntu is generally my flavor of choice, but I just installed 12.04 desktop and I am seeing some behavior in network manager that is really puzzling. The network connection works fine if I leave it set on dhcp, but I would like a static IP address for my new web server. When I go into network manager and edit the connection for the one and only NIC I can select MANUAL from the dropdown menu but as soon as I do the Save button becomes greyed out. Even after filling out all fields for the connection it is still grey and I am unable to save the static IP connection information. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping there is just some new setting that I am unaware of.... On another note, if I stop the network manager and go edit the interfaces file (and the appropriate hosts/routes/dns files), I do get a static ip address assigned and I can contact my server from the outside, however, the server cannot find the internet. Can't ping even its own ip... I can ping the loopback interface though. I'm really confused on this one. Hoping someone can offer some help.

• Text template or tool for documentation of computer configurations

  I regularly write and update technical documentation which will be used to set up a new virtual machine, or to have a lookup for system dependencies in networks with around 20-50 (server-side) computers. At the moment I use OpenOffice Writer with text tables, and create one document per intranet domain. To improve this documentation, I would like to collect some examples to identify areas where my documents can be improved, regarding general structure and content, to make it easy to read and use not only for me but also for technical staff, helpdesk etc. Are there simple text templates (for example for OpenOffice Writer) or tools (maybe database-driven) for structured documentation of a computer configuration? Such a template / tool should provide required and optional configuration sections, like 'operating system', 'installed services', 'mapped network drives', 'scheduled tasks', 'remote servers', 'logon user account', 'firewall settings', 'hard disk size' ... It is not so much low-level hardware docs but more infrastructure / integration information in these documents (no BIOS settings, MAC addresses).

• Enabling SFTP Access within PLESK

  I have a client who wants to ensure his upload is secure, so we are trying to enable SFTP for him on our Linux PLESK server. I have enabled SSH access to bin/bash for FTP accounts, and created a new user. When I attempt to SFTP using either the IP address or the domain name, this is the error FileZilla is giving me: Error: Authentication failed. Error: Critical error Error: Could not connect to server Here is some basic information regarding the server: Operating system Linux 2.6.24.5-20080421a Plesk Control Panel version psa v8.6.0_build86080930.03 os_CentOS 5 I had read in some places that I should reboot the SSH Service in Server - Services, however, there is no SSH Service within the list. • What kind of hosting do I need?

  I migrated this question from serverfault. Hopefully this is the appropriate place. I have been trying to answer this question but I haven't found an specific answer to my situation. As I want to pay for what I need, I thought I could get a good answer here. I have a custom made forum (rather than a built-in forum like the ones you can find in plugins, e.g. WP-Forum or phpBB type of software) in Django. I don't want to use Apache and modwsgi because it's usually very memory-hungry and I can't afford a big server. I prefer a combination of nginx and gunicorn which I think is very efficient (maybe you can also tell me what you think about that). I'm expecting to receive 10,000 to 20,000 visits each month with 15,000 to 30,000 page impressions. I have reviewed some cloud services like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace and other more traditional services (Linodo). This site won't use videos or big images and I certainly don't need a huge amount of bandwidth (200GB would be definitely too much). I need shell access so shared hosting is out of the question. What do I need to run a website like that without problems? What about RAM? 256MB would be enough (that's the amount of RAM offered by small instances in Amazon and Rackspace)? Do you know of any alternative to those I mentioned? If you need more information to provide a useful answer, please don't hesitate to ask. By the way, I was told that Linodo is not all that different to Amazon EC2 but this website is supposed to work 24/7, so I can't take advantage of Linodo's flexibility regarding creating and deleting instances. • Is there an OpenID demo server out there?

  Hi everyone. I'm doing some experiements with adding OpenID to something I'm working on, and I'd like to test out a few providers. Is there a server out there that will go through the OpenID login process (same way that the StackOverflow group does) and tell me all the information the provider shows. I imagine it would work like... I go to example.com and type in https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id example.com bounces me to google. I log in. Google asks me to confirm if I allow example.com access to everything. Google bounces me back to example.com example.com tells me my OpenID, email address, anything else it's got. Does such a thing please already exist?

• Cannot view dates of emails(no date field), in my CSV file exported from MS Outlook

  I am using Outlook 2010 - I have my emails showing in there. and exported my emails, into a csv file. (file..options..advanced...export..export to a file.. I have opened that csv file in excel Here is a list of the fields it shows. I see "Date" doesn't appear among them. Also, (and less importantly, and as a very secondary issue) is there a convenient way to read the csv file? reading an email with a long body, in excel, is not convenient, I need to select all of the body from the cell and copy/paste it into notepad.

• Root certificate authority works windows/linux but not mac osx - (malformed)

  I have created a self-signed root certificate authority which if I install onto windows, linux, or even using the certificate store in firefox (windows/linux/macosx) will work perfectly with my terminating proxy. I have installed it into the system keychain and I have set the certificate to always trust. Within the chrome browser details it says "The certificate that Chrome received during this connection attempt is not formatted correctly, so Chrome cannot use it to protect your information. Error type: Malformed certificate" I used this code to create the certificate: openssl genrsa -des3 -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 4096 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha1 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf If the issue is NOT that it is malformed (because it works everywhere else) then what else could it be? Am I installing it incorrectly? Update I tried changing the certificate attributes, but to no avail: openssl genrsa -des -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 2048 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha256 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf

• How should I structure moving from overworld to menu system / combat?

  I'm making a text-based "Arena" game where the player is the owner of 5 creatures that battle other teams for loot, experience and glory. The game is very simple, using Python and a curses emulator. I have a static ASCII map of an "overworld" of sorts. My character, represented by a glyph, can move about this static map. There are locations all over the map that the character can visit, that break down into two types: 1) Towns, which are a series of menus that will allow the player to buy equipment for his team, hire new recruits or do other things. 2) Arenas, where the player's team will have a "battle" interface with actions he can perform, messages about the fight, etc. Maybe later, an ASCII representation of the fight but for now, just screens of information with action prompts. My main problem is what kind of design or structure I should use to implement this? Right now, the game goes through a master loop which waits for keyboard input and then moves the player about the screen. My current thinking is this: 1) Upon keyboard input, the Player coordinates are checked against a list of Location objects and if the Player coords match the Location coords then... 2) ??? I'm not sure if I should then call a seperate function to initiate a "menu" or "combat" mode. Or should I create some kind of new GameMode object that contains a method itself for drawing the screen, printing the necessary info? How do I pass my player's team data into this object? My main concern is passing around the program flow into all these objects. Should I be calling straight functions for different parts of my game, and objects to represent "things" within my game? I was reading about the MVC pattern and how this kind of problem might benefit - decouple the GUI from the game logic and user input but I have no idea how this applies to my game.

• 1080p Screen resolution problem after 10.04 to 12.04 update

  I have a Samsung LCD 40" with a NVidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Card. I recently upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 and the best resolution I can get is 1360x768. I've tried the propietary drivers available on the repository kmod:nvidia_current kmod:nvidia_173_updates kmod:nvidia_current_updates kmod:nvidia_96 kmod:nvidia_96_updates kmod:nvidia_173 I've also downloaded latest from NVidia's Web, version: 295.40. But still no luck. With Nouveau driver, I can only get 1024x768. I know there is no problem with my hardware (video card, cable and monitor), I was using it perfectly on 10.04. Can anybody suggest something else I could try, to get my 1920x1080 resolution back? Thanks in advance. • Is there a media player that allows me to group together radio streams which are just mirrors of the

  I find it really annoying that for some radio stations, which have two or more servers to cope with the network load, there is not one single entry in amaroks playlist but two or more entries. This makes it hard to pick the radio station from the list I like to listen to because all the entries are always shown with the last played track as name, and even if I only have a few radio stations in my list there will eventually be many different entries. And, if I use the keyboard shortcuts to navigate the playlist I always have to remember that radio station X has for example four entries in the playlist, so I have to press the shortcut for switching tracks four times to actually switch the to the next station. Now, ideally I would like some solution for amarok, but if someone knows of another media player that does this or something I would appreciate that information as well.

When doing this i have collected data (phone model etc) and send it to the server with a regular GET HTTP call like this: http://www.myserver.com/getData.php?phonemodel=userphone&appversion=2&id=20 This is logged in the IIS logfiles. I thought of writing my own parser for log files. But why invent the wheel? I´m looking for a software that can read the IIS 6 logfiles. • Start a new project. Where is the inspiration ?

  The question may seem strange at first glance ... And I may be alone in this situation. But currently I want to improve my skill through learning new framework. however, do a simple "HelloWorld" application does not satisfy me. I think a practical project is required to apprehend the basics of a framework. I know there is many scholar-like project like design a library manager or CMS. But I have recently planned to learn ~3 differents frameworks and I can't find any motivations through "unexciting" project. In the end I have not started any framework ... I'm aware of I do not develop the project of the year ... I'm just looking for something a bit exciting. I do not expect any project subject, anyway stimulation provided by a project is something subjective. But I want to know your inspiration ! (or method to learn framework ^^) I'm talking about web-dev framework but I'm open to any kind information ! Kind regards.

• What are some internet trends that you've noticed over the past ~10 years? [closed]

  I'll give an example of one that I've noticed: the number of web sites that ask for your email address (GOOG ID, YAHOO! ID, etc.) has skyrocketed. I can come up with no legitimate reason for this other than (1) password reset [other ways to do this], or (2) to remind you that you have an account there, based upon the time of your last visit. Why does a web site need to know your email address (Google ID, etc.) if all you want to do is... download a file (no legit reason whatsoever) play a game (no legit reason whatsoever) take an IQ test or search a database (no legit reason whatsoever) watch a video or view a picture (no legit reason whatsoever) read a forum (no legit reason whatsoever) post on a forum (mildly legit reason: password reset) newsletter (only difference between a newsletter and a blog is that you're more likely to forget about the web site than you are to forget about your email address -- the majority of web sites do not send out newsletters, however, so this can't be the justification) post twitter messages or other instant messaging (mildly legit reason: password reset) buy something (mildly legit reasons: password reset + giving you a copy of a receipt that they can't delete, as receipts stored on their server can be deleted) On the other hand, I can think of plenty of very shady reasons for asking for this information: so the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. can very easily track what you do by reading your email or asking GOOG, etc. what sites you used your GOOG ID at to use the password that you provide for your account in order to get into your email account (most people use the same password for all of their accounts), find all of your other accounts in your inbox, and then get into all of those accounts sell your email address to spammers These reasons, I believe, are why you are constantly asked to provide your email address. I can come up with no other explanations whatsoever. Question 1: Can anyone think of any legitimate or illegitimate reasons for asking for someone's email address? Question 2: What are some other interesting internet trends of the past ~10 years?

• Strange issue with 64 bit OS

  So I own two versions of Windows 7, one is 32 bit, the other is 64. The 64 bit version came with my new desktop, and the 32 bit version came with my Laptop. I was doing a clean install of my laptop, and the install went smooth, Windows is up and running! However, after installing it I realized that I accidentally used the 64 bit installation disk instead of the 32 bit version. I confirmed this in the System Information screen, it says: System type: 64-bit Operating System As far as I knew this laptop was only a 32 bit machine. My understanding is that a 64 bit OS would NOT run on 32 bit architecture. Am I correct with this assumption? If this was a 32 bit laptop is there any way a 64 bit OS would even run at all on it?

• Rules Manager and Expression Filter getting removed

  I doubt that many people are using the Oracle features "Rules Manager" and "Expression Filter" as usually people handle these things (such as ensuring that a zip code or a car number plate has a certain format) within the application code and not inside the database. Oracle Beehive for instance uses that just on the side.  Anyway, just learned today that Rules Manager and Expression Filter components will get removed once our next database release most likely called Oracle Database 12c will get released. So before upgrading to Oracle Database 12c you can remove EXF and RUL components (SELECT COMP_ID FROM DBA_REGISTRY WHERE COMP_ID IN ('EXF','RUL'); ). You'd simply do that by executing the following script before upgrade:SQL> @?/rdbms/admin/catnoexf.sqlThis will clean up Rules Manager and Expression Filter components inside the database. You could run ?/rdbms/admin/catnorul.sql before but I believe catnoexf.sql will clean up everything already.
