• How would you mask data returned in a Dynamic Data for Entities website?

  I'm doing this in Visual Studio 2008, not 2010, in case there is a relevant difference between the two versions of the Dynamic Data websites. How would I mask data in the automatically generated tables in a Dynamic Data for Entities website? The scenario is we have one table where we want to allow users to ENTER sensitive data, but not VIEW sensitive data, so... (In the list below, I'm using "template" to mean "The web page generated automatically based on the schema and action. I'm sure that's the wrong terminology, but the meaning should be clear.) The "Insert" template should have the field's textbox available for the user to type a value in. The "Edit" template should have the field's textbox blanked out (empty string) regardless of what was in the field in the database in the first place, but the user should be able to type in new data and have it save The "View" template should either have the data for this field masked, or non-visible. The auto-generated table showing the list of records should also have this field masked or non-visible. I can do this easily with standard Web Forms, but I'm having a hard time figuring this out in the Dynamic Data site I'm working on. Masking data is such a common task, I have to believe Microsoft thought of this and provided a way to do it...

• Validating age field

  Hi people, I'm trying to validate an age field in a form but I'm having some problem. First I tried to make sure that the field will not be send empty. • Auto-rotating freshly created interface

  Hello! I have trouble with auto-rotating interfaces in my iPad app. I have a class called Switcher that observes the interface rotation notifications and when it receives one, it switches the view in window, a bit like this: - (void) orientationChanged: (NSNotification*) notice { UIDeviceOrientation newIO = [[UIDevice currentDevice] orientation]; UIViewController *newCtrl = /* something based on newIO */; [currentController.view removeFromSuperview]; // remove the old view [window addSubview newCtrl.view]; [self setCurrentController:newCtrl]; } The problem is that the new view does not auto-rotate. Now what? The orientation changing is becoming my least favourite part of the iPhone SDK… (I can’t check the code on the device yet, could it be a bug in the simulator?) PS. • How to display only one letter in Flex Text Layout Framework ContainerController?

  I'm trying to implement dropped initials feature into my Flex application. Since Text Layout Framework does not support floating, the only known solution is to create additional containers that will be linked together, displaying the same textflow. Width and positioning of these containers has to be set in such a way that it will pretend that it's float. I'm using the same solution for dropped initials. Basically, I'm creating three containers, one for the initial letter (first letter in text flow), the other for text floating around, and the 3rd one to display text below these two. All these containers share one textflow. I have big issues with forcing controller to display only one letter from the text flow, and size it accordingly, so that it wont take any unnecessary aditional space and won't get any more text into it. Using ContainerController.getContentBounds() returns me size of whole sprite of the letter (with ascent/descent empty parts), not the height/width of the actual rendered letter. I'm using textFlow.flowComposer.getLineAt(0).getTextLine().getAtomBounds(0), but i think it's still not right. Also, even if I set container for this dimensions, it sometimes display additional text in it, especially for bigger fonts. See screen : Also, if I set width to just 1px less that contentBounds, things are going crazy, containers are moved around, positioned with big margins, etc. How should I solve this? Is it a bug in TLF / Player? Can I fix it somehow? Can I detect the size of the letter, or make containercontroller autosize to fit just one letter only?

• Adding figures using contextual menu - Eclipse GEF

  All, I am creating a palette less eclipse plugin where am adding figures to the custom editor through the contextual menu, but am not finding a way to do it. Can anyone please guide me as to how to go about adding figures to editor dynamically through context menu i.e. adding actions/commands. Since Eclipse GEF plugin development finds so less examples to look at, I am adding my solution so others find it useful. This code helps to render a node to the editor. • Why is my UITableView not being set?

  I checked using the debbuger in the viewDidLoad method and tracerTableView is 0x0 which i assume means it is nil. I don't understand. I should go ahaed say yes I have already checked my nib file and yes all the connections are correct. • Suggest the way to design several classes

  Hi, I'm building simple application on as3. Kind of starship game. What I want to do is to create several different star ships. Each one should have different images (different look), different sets of animation (e.g. when it's flying, burning, damaged), different kind of weapon and also different controllers (e.g. one can be managed by user, another one by computer, and I want to be able to reuse same ships for AI controller as well as for users controls). Each ship is created in the following way: Create entity Add spatial Add renderers Add other components.... ...... n. init the ship So what I am trying to do: 1) Create StarShip superclass, to store HP (as every ship has it), store spatial (same reason) 2) Create inherited class for any other ship... (It will contain renderer - (responsible for display part), weapon, set of animations), etc What do you think about such way of composition? Maybe it's better to place everything in super class, and then just create instances using long, long, long constructors like: StarShip(hp:HP, animations:DICT, weapon:Weapon, ....) Need advice

• why MVC instead of good old asp.net? Still not grasping why I should go this route??

  I know this question has been asked before and I read all the answers but they still don't give me the answers I am looking for. I need something concrete. I volunteered to give a presentation on MVC to other developers in our group which forces me to learn it. The big question everyone has is: "What can MVC bring to the table that we can't do in asp.net or MVC can do faster. I have just gone through Nerd Dinner and actually created a complete website that sort of mimics Nerd Dinner. But as great a job that Scott Guthrie did on it, there are big gaps that aren't answered such as, how do I throw a textbox on the listing page with a button and do a simple search. In asp.net, I would throw a textbox, button and grid on the page and bind it to a sproc and away I go. What is the equivalent in MVC. I guess I need a really good tutorial on how to use MVC without using Linq-to-Sql. I know I am sort of babbling on about this but it is a very serious question that still seems to go unanswered. On a side note, the View page of MVC brings back nightmares of classic asp with all the in-line code that we got away from way back when with code behind pages. Yes, MVC has Controller and Model classes which are great but I still don't like the classic asp tags in the html. Help me out here, I really like the concept of MVC and want it to be successful but I need more!

• How do I sanitize a string in PHP that contains "; Echo"? (I have a solid reason)

  I turned this case into a simple PHP page that submits to itself. My issue is that I am submitting track meet results and one of the girl's names is Echo...a lovely name. The problem text I'm submitting is: Pole vault - Rachel Simons, Tow, 8-6; Echo Wilson, Cit, 8-0; Molly Randall, Tow, 7-0; So you see a semicolon followed by white space followed by Echo... After submitting, it says: POST to /results/test.php not supported The end goal is to save it to a database along with some other info and have a search page to find it and simply print out the full result on the screen. I stripped out all my database stuff to get it down to this one error. I mean, I can intentionally mis-spell her name, but there's gotta be a way around this, right???   Hello guys. Just want to know if there is a way to detect how many times a user has clicked a button by using Jquery. My main application has a button that can add input fields depend on the users. He/She can adds as many input fields as they need. When they submit the form, The add page will add the data to my database. My current idea is to create a hidden input field and set the value to zero. Every time a user clicks the button, jquery would update the attribute of the hidden input field value. Then the "add page" can detect the loop time. See the example below. I just want to know if there are better practices to do this. • Is CakePhp 'standards compliant' when generating HTML, Forms, etc?

  So I've been reading a lot of "Designing with Web Standards" and really enjoying it. I'm a big CakePhp user, and as I look at the source for various form elements that Cake creates with its FormHelper, I see all sorts of extraneous In the book, he promotes semantic HTML, and writing your markup as simple / generic as possible. So my question is, am I better writing my own HTML in these situations? I really want to work in compliance with XHTML and CSS standards, and it seems I'd spend just as much time (if not more) cleaning up Cakes HTML, when I could just write my own thoughts? p.s. • CakePHP: Missing database table

  I have a CakePHP application that is running fine locally. I uploaded it to a production server and the first page that uses a database connection gives the "Missing Database Table" error. When I look at the controller dump, it's complaining about the first table. I've tried a variety of things to fix this problem, with no luck: I've confirmed that at the command line I can login with the given MySQL credentials in database.php I've confirmed this table exists I've tried using the MySQL root credentials (temporarily) to see if the problem lies with permissions of the user. The same error appeared. My debug level is currently set to 3 I've deleted the entire contents of /app/tmp/cache I've set 777 permissions on /app/tmp* I've confirmed that I can run DESCRIBE commands at the commant line MySQL when logged in with the MySQL credentials used by by the application I've verified that the CakePHP log file only contains the error I'm setting in the browser window. I've tried all the suggestions I could find in similar postings on SO I've Googled around and didn't find any other ideas I think I've eliminating the obvious problems and my research isn't turning anything up. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Any ideas?

• Redirecting users after destroy

  I have 3 models: Questions, Answers, and Profiles (I know, it should be called "Users"). When you view a question Q, I query the database for the answers to Q. (They are linked by id.) I want it to redirect to /questions/Q. What's the best way to do this? I know that there's a redirect_to method, but I don't know how to implement it when I want to redirect to an action for a different controller. It also needs to remember the question from which the answer is being deleted. I tried passing something like :question_id in link_to as: #{link_to 'Delete my answer', a, :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :question_id => @question.id, :method => :delete} In AnswersController#destroy: def destroy @answer = Answer.find(params[:id]) @answer.destroy respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to(answers_url) } format.xml { head :ok } end @question = Question.find(params[:question_id]) redirect_to question_path(@question) end The :question_id information is not passed to the destroy method, so I get this error: Couldn't find Question without an ID To confirm, I added a puts call before Question.find, and it returned nil.

• What is the PastryKit Framework?

  I'm trying to find any information I can on the PastryKit Javascript Framework. It appears to be in use on the iPhone User Guide that is displayed on the iPhone itself in Mobile Safari, but I cannot find any documentation or API. If you want to see it in action, open Safari 4, set your user agent to iPhone 3 (In the Develop menu) and check out the guide. Overall, it seems to be a way to write an HTML/CSS/Javascript application that acts like a native iPhone app. When it comes to Javascript, I used the JS Beautifier on (what I assume to be) the framework file and it was over 3,400 lines! Beautified, (again what I assume to be) their implementation of it was over 1,200 lines. On the CSS side, I used Clean CSS on (again what I assume to be) the framework CSS, and it came out to over 700 lines. Their implementation was shy of 500. Does anybody have, or know where to find, any information, documentation, or APIs on PastryKit? Or, can anybody figure out how to implement it?

• Null Pointer Exception in Primavera P6 8.1

  I am getting a null pointer exception in a Primavera P6 8.1 installation. The exception only occurs in one section of the web-client: Application settings.P6 web and the P6 API are deployed on the same WebLogic (10.3.5) node running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 installation. I have done this installation using this same software stack a dozen times and don't have this issue on any of the other installs. • Chrome not sending POST requests on localhost, Firefox works fine

  I have copied the simple Django forms example exactly, running on localhost. The basic contact form example should submit a POST request when you click the Submit button. I'm running Chrome on Mac Snow Leopard, and whenever I submit the form, the page simply reloads with an empty form: I can see from the runserver output that it's not sending a POST - instead it's sending a GET request. If I open the same page in Firefox on Mac Snow Leopard, and submit the form, I can see it's sending a POST request (as it should be). Looking at the source in Chrome, the form definitely says method="post". <form action="/contact/" method="post"> <p><label for="id_subject">Subject:</label> <input id="id_subject" type="text" name="subject" maxlength="100" /></p> <p><label for="id_message">Message:</label> <input type="text" name="message" id="id_message" /></p> <p><label for="id_sender">Sender:</label> <input type="text" name="sender" id="id_sender" /></p> <p><label for="id_cc_myself">Cc myself:</label> <input type="checkbox" name="cc_myself" id="id_cc_myself" /></p> <input type="submit" value="Submit" /> </form> External sites with POST forms seem to work OK in Chrome.
