• Gaming on Cloud

  Sometimes I wonder the pundits of cloud computing are way to consumed with the enterprise applications. With all the CAPEX / OPEX, ROI-talk taking the center stage, an opportunity to affect masses directly is getting overlooked. I am a self proclaimed die hard gamer. I come from the generation of gamers who started their journey in DOS games like Wolfenstein 3D and Allan Border Cricket (the latter is still a favorite pastime). In the late 90s, a revolution called accelerated graphics started in DirectX and OpenGL. Games got more advanced. Likes of Quake III and Unreal Tournament became the crown jewels of the industry. But with all these advancements, there started a race. A race of GFX giants ATI and NVIDIA to beat each other for better frame and image quality. Revisions to the graphics chipsets became frequent. Games became eye candies but at the cost of more GPU power / memory. Every eagerly awaited title started demanding more muscle power in graphics and PC hardware. Latest games and all the liquid smooth frame rates became the territory of the once with deep pockets who could spend lavishly on latest hardware. Enthusiasts like yours truly, who couldn’t afford this route, started exploring over-clocking, optimized hardware cooling... etc. to pursue the passion. Ever rising cost of hardware requirements lead to rampant piracy of PC games. Gamers were willing to spend on the latest titles, but the ones with tight budget prefer hardware upgrades against a legal copy of the game. It was also fueled by emergence of the P2P file sharing networks. Then came the era of Xbox and PS3s. It solved the major issue of hardware standardization and provided an alternative to ever increasing hardware costs. I have always admired these consoles, but being born and brought up in a keyboard/mouse environment, I still find it difficult to play first person shooters with a gamepad. I leave the topic of PC v/s Consol gaming for another day, but the bottom line is… PC gamers deserve an equally democratized solution. This is where I think Cloud Computing can come to rescue. It can minimize hardware requirements. Virtually end the software piracy and rationalize costs for gamers. Subscription based models like pay-as-you-play. In game rewards, like extended subscription credits for exceptional gamers (oh yes, I have beaten Xaero on nightmare in Quake III, time and again!) Easy deployment for patches and fixes. Better game AI. The list goes on and on… Fortunately, companies like OnLive are thinking in the same direction. Their gaming service is all set to launch on 17th June 2010 in E3 2010 expo in L.A. I wish them all the luck. I hope they will start a trend which will bring the smiles back on the face of budget gamers with the help of cloud computing.

  After the introduction of the Recommended Patch Collections (RPCs) in late 2012, Fixed Assets development has released an RPC about every six months.  You may recall that an RPC is a collection of recommended patches consolidated into a single, downloadable patch, ready to be applied.  The RPCs are created with the following goals in mind: Stability:  Address issues that occur often and interfere with the normal completion of crucial business processes, such as period close--as observed by Oracle Development and Global Customer Support. Root Cause Fixes:  Deliver a root cause fix for data corruption issues that delay period close, normal transaction flow actions, performance, and other issues.   I am using nxlog to tail a custom log file on one of my Windows servers. • How do you structure your shared code so that it is "re-findable" for new developers?

  I started working at my current job about 8 months ago, and its been one of the best experiences I've had as a young programmer. It's a small company, and both my co-developers are brilliant guys. One of the practices that they both have been encouraging is lots of code-reuse. Our code base is mainly C#, and we're using a centralized revision control system. The way the repository is currently structured, there is a single folder in which all shared class libraries are placed (along with unit tests for each library), and our revision control system allows for sharing or linking those libraries out to other projects. What I'm trying to understand at this point is how the current structure of the folder can be made more conducive for finding those libraries again. I've talked to the other developers about this, and they agree that it's gotten a little messy. I find that I am sometimes "reinventing the wheel" because I didn't realize that there was an existing piece of code that solved a particular problem. The issue is complicated further by the fact that we're sharing some code between ASP.NET MVC2, WinForms, and Windows CE projects, and sharing code between applications built against multiple versions of .NET. How do other people approach this? Is the answer in naming the libraries in a certain way or is it preferable to invest in some code-search software? Is the answer in doc comments? Should we be sharing libraries at all or should we simply branch the class libraries for re-use? Thanks for any and all help!

  I like the system of multiple gmail labels but am concerned about space used. I think that TB stores a separate copy of the whole email in every folder corresponding to a gmail label [including a copy in the "allmail" folder along with a separate copy in the each of the other folders]. Can I arrange to store a single copy of the email in TB,[perhaps in the allmail folder] with a shortcut type pointer from the individual folders to that single copy.[i.e for every email with one gmail label [eg personal] there are already 2 copies in TB, one in the allmail folder and a second in the "personal" folder

• How can rotating release managers improve a project's velocity and stability?

  The Wikipedia article on Parrot VM includes this unreferenced claim: Core committers take turns producing releases in a revolving schedule, where no single committer is responsible for multiple releases in a row. This practice has improved the project's velocity and stability. Parrot's Release Manager role documentation doesn't offer any further insight into the process, and I couldn't find any reference for the claim. My first thoughts were that rotating release managers seems like a good idea, sharing the responsibility between as many people as possible, and having a certain degree of polyphony in releases. Is it, though? Rotating release managers has been proposed for Launchpad, and there were some interesting counterarguments: Release management is something that requires a good understanding of all parts of the code and the authority to make calls under pressure if issues come up during the release itself The less change we can have to the release process the better from an operational perspective Don't really want an engineer to have to learn all this stuff on the job as well as have other things to take care of (regular development responsibilities) Any change of timezones of the releases would need to be approved with the SAs and: I think this would be a great idea (mainly because of my lust for power), but I also think that there should be some way making sure that a release manager doesn't get overwhelmed if something disastrous happens during release week, maybe by have a deputy release manager at the same time (maybe just falling back to Francis or Kiko would be sufficient). The practice doesn't appear to be very common, and the counterarguments seem reasonalbe and convincing. I'm quite confused on how it would improve a project's velocity and stability, is there something I'm missing, or is this just a bad edit on the Wikipedia article? Worth noting that the top voted answer in the related "Is rotating the lead developer a good or bad idea?" question boldly notes: Don't rotate.

• A synergy alternative that just works?

  I have been using Synergy for a few days now on my Windows 7 desktop (as server) and Macbook (client). Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy - often, the keyboard would stop working on the Mac to the point of forcing me to use the Macbook's keyboard. There are other weird problems as well. Is there a better/proprietary alternative to Synergy? It should support both Windows and Mac. I'd be more than willing to pay for it if it would just work. Edit: How is VNC/TeamViewer supposed to help? I'm not looking to merely access a remote desktop, I only want to share the keyboard/mouse with multiple computers (mac, windows) retaining their own display.

• Oracle OpenWorld Session: “Business Driven Development with BPM: Lessons from the Real World”

  One of key values that BPM promises is “Business Empowerment”. People closest to the processes, who participate in the process every day, are the ones who know most about the process. These are the people who run day-to-day operations, people who triage customer issues, people who envision improvements and innovations. It is, therefore, imperative that when a company decides to use BPM technology to automate their business processes, business people take the driver’s seat. BPM is not an IT only project. Oracle BPM suite has been designed keeping this core tenet of BPM, Business Empowerment, in mind. The result is business user centered design of Process Composer. Process Composer is designed to let business users document their processes, analyze them using simulation, create web forms, specify business rules and even run them in testing mode using process player, to see if the designed process meets their needs. This does not mean that IT has no role in this process. In fact, Oracle BPM Suite has made it very easy for Business and IT to collaborate. The same process can be shared among business, and IT stakeholders and each can collaborate to create model-driven, process based executable applications. A process may need to integrate with multiple systems via various mechanisms, and IT leads system and data integration effort. IT helps fine tune the performance of process applications and ensures that the deployment of process application meets scalability and failover standards. In this session, we saw Harish Gaur and Satya Narayanan from Oracle demonstrate roles Business and IT play in BPM projects and how Oracle BPM Suite enables business and IT collaboration to design and automate process based applications. They also discussed real life customer stories.   Recently I have started my journey Oracle SOA Suite and the first big hurdle everyone warned me off is setting up Oracle SOA Suite environment in our personal machine for learning. My laziness pushed me to search for much easier way than regular all download, configuration stuff and bang..! I found in the solution oracle site itself. Oracle SOA Suite on Virtual Box. For those who are not aware of Virtual Box, it’s a virtualization software which enables u to install multiple operating systems on a virtual hard drive which in turn managed by Virtual Box. In short pack ur Operating System, Software, Files everything into a VM and carry it wherever u go. Coming to Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle is offering a prebuilt VM for download which u can mount on ur Virtual box and that all you need. Here is the link for Virtual Box image of Oracle SOA Suite. • putty pageant - forget keys after period of inactivity

  in the environment where windows client computers are used to run putty to connect to multiple linux servers i'm considering moving away from password based authentication and using public/private key pairs with pass-phrases. using ssh-agent would be nice, but at the same time i'd like it to 'forget' the pass-phrases after given period of inactivity. it seems that putty's pageant does not provide such feature; what would you suggest as alternative? solutions that i'm considering: patching pageant code [might be tricky, code is probably quite rusty and project - sadly - stagnant] writing small custom application using GetLastInputInfo and killing pageant if the machine was idle for more than let's say 15 minutes [ yes, there'll be separate policy for locking the desktops as well ] using alternative ssh client and ssh agent. any suggestions? thanks!

• Remove unwanted Mount option from Places Menu

  On Ubuntu 10.10, I added a CIFS network share into /etc/fstab using /media/pub as my mount point. The share becomes visible on the Desktop and under Places (drive icon), which is what I want. But the problem is, Ubuntu 10.10 (unlike 10.04) creates another entry under Places with same name "pub", except this appears to be a mount shortcut rather than another link to the share. When I move my mouse over it says "Mount pub" and if I click on it, it will mount the share and again each time (if already mounted) - it does not display contents of share. In either case, an error pops up soon after "Unable to mount pub - Timeout waiting for mount to appear". The share itself is accessible, but I can't unmount via GUI, system reports its mounted multiple times and I have to unmount via terminal. (sudo umount -a) As I'm mounting the share at boot time, I don't need this manual option under Places. Is there an easy way to stop Ubuntu from listing it under Places? I have tried making the mount point under /mnt, this fixes the problem, except creates another as it removes the drive icon from Desktop and Places. I could create a bookmark, but just wondered if there's an easy fix to this unwanted entry under Places. Thanks

• Prepared statement alternatives for this middle-man program?

  I have an program that is using a prepared statement to connect and write to a database working nicely, and now need to create a middle-man program to insert between this program and the database. This middle-man program will actually write to multiple databases and handle any errors and connection issues. I would like advice as to how to replicate the prepared statements such as to create minimal impact to the existing program, however I am not sure where to start. I have thought about creating a "SQL statement class" that mimics the prepared statement, only that seems silly. The existing program is in Java, although it's going to be networked anyways so I would be open to writing it in just about anything that would make sense. The databases are currently MySQL, although I would like to be open to changing the database type in the future. My main question is what should the interface for this program look like, and does doing this even make sense? A distributed DB would be the ideal solution, but they seem overly complex and expensive for my needs. I am hoping to replicate the main functionality of a distributed DB via this middle-man. I am not too familiar with sql-based servers distributing data (or database in general...) - perhaps I am fighting an uphill battle by trying to solve it via programming, but I would like to make an attempt at least.

• Trouble migrating Joomla from Linux to Windows server

  I'm having some trouble migrating a Joomla website from a Linux server to a Windows server. The database came over fine, Besides that, all I've done is download all the files from the current site, and change configuration.php so the log and tmp directories show "./tmp/" and "./logs/" I keep having an error in the PHP log stating PHP Fatal error: Class 'JTable' not found I've downloaded the site multiple times now, and I'm convinced this is a configuration problem, and not a missing file problem. I've even tried installing a mod for backup on the linux box to try and migrate the site, but sadly the mod had problems installing. The new server is running IIS 7.5 on Windows Web Server.   Oracle OpenWorld Shanghai 2013 was held July 22nd – 25th at the International Expo Center in Shanghai, China. The conference drew over 19,000 attendees from 44 countries. In addition, 580 CxOs attended the Executive Edge program, and 430+ partners attended the Oracle Partner Network Exchange. The conference included a number of sessions on Big Data, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence and Enterprise Performance Management delivered by Oracle, our partners and customers.  I had the pleasure to attend the conference and delivered three sessions focused on Oracle’s Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications. Each of my sessions was well-attended, and in a few cases was standing room only, so there is clearly a lot of interest in the China market in EPM. The EPM and BI demo pods in the DemoGrounds at the conference also received a lot of traffic. In addition to the conference sessions I delivered, I had several meetings with customers and partners in Shanghai.These sessions and meetings I attended made clear the interest that customers in China have in improving their planning, management reporting, financial reporting, and profitability management processes. In fact, with the China Ministry of Finance now standardizing on XBRL for annual reporting across multiple agencies in China, there is a great opportunity here for our disclosure management application.   I have: a video which has mono audio inside a audio (mono) I'd like to merge those two to a single video file containing: video from #1 audio from #1 full left pan + audio #2 full right pan Is this possible in ffmpeg using 1 command? I've tried the following which almost does this but the video/audio gets out of sync: ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -filter_complex "amovie=audio.wav [r] ; [r] amerge" output.mp4 -y I've managed to do it with multiple commands: #1 create right panned audio ffmpeg -i audio.wav -ac 2 -vbr 5 audio-stereo.mp3 -y ffmpeg -i audio-stereo.mp3 -af pan=stereo:c1=c1 audio-right.mp3 -y #2 create left panned video ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -af pan=stereo:c0=c0 video-left.mp4 -y #3 merge the two ffmpeg -i video-left.mp4 -i audio-right.mp3 -filter_complex "amix=inputs=2" video-mixed.mp4 -y It does the job, but is it possible with 1 command?

• Recommended storage scheme for home server? (LVM/JBOD/RAID 5...)

  Are there any guidelines for which storage scheme(s) makes most sense for a multiple-disk home server? I am assuming a separate boot/OS disk (so bootability is not a concern, this is for data storage only) and 4-6 storage disks of 1-2 TB each, for a total storage capacity in the range 4-12 TB. The file system is ext4, I expect there will be only one big partition spanning all disks. As far as I can tell, the alternatives are individual disks pros: works with any combination of disk sizes; losing a disk loses only the data on that disk; no need for volume management. cons: data management is clumsy when logical units (like a "movies" folder) are larger than the capacity of any single drive. JBOD span pros: can merge disks of any size. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks LVM pros: can merge disks of any size; relatively simple to add and remove disks. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks RAID 0 pros: speed cons: losing one drive loses all data; disks must be same size RAID 5 pros: data survives losing one disk cons: gives up one disk worth of capacity; disks must be same size RAID 6 pros: data survives losing two disks cons: gives up two disks worth of capacity; disks must be same size I'm primarily considering either LVM or JBOD span simply because it will let me reuse older, smaller-capacity disks when I upgrade the system. The runner-up is RAID 0 for speed. I'm planning on having full backups to a separate system, so I expect the extra redundancy from RAID levels 5 or 6 won't be important. Is this a fair representation of the alternatives? Are there other considerations or alternatives I have missed? And what would you recommend?

• APC module causing strange error

  When I run php -v I get: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/apc.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/apc.so: undefined symbol: php_pcre_exec in Unknown on line 0 This isn't my first rodeo. I've setup APC multiple times. This is a MediaTemple Dedicated Virtual 4.0 with Plesk 11. Plesk 11 is the only thing essentially different from the other servers I've set this up on. I've verified that pcre-devel is installed. I've compiled APC from source as well as used pecl to install it. No difference. I also tried downgrading to APC 3.0.19, with no love.

User-A has two ssh private keys, and over time has used this public key on a number of servers He lost one of them, and has created a new pair. How does User-A, inform me (Sys Admin), that he has lost his key, and How do I manage all the servers to which he had access to (I do not have a list, of all Servers that User-A has access to). In other words, How do I recall, the public key associated with this Private key. REF: In the LDAP based Authentication, All Servers would communicate with a single Server repository for Authentication, and If I remove acess or modify the password on the Server, all Systems that use this LDAP for Authentication are secured, when User-A loses his password..

• How can I set up VLANs in a way that won't put me at risk for VLAN hopping?

  We're planning to migrate our production network from a VLAN-less configuration to a tagged VLAN (802.1q) configuration. This diagram summarizes the planned configuration: One significant detail is that a large portion of these hosts will actually be VMs on a single bare-metal machine. In fact, the only physical machines will be DB01, DB02, the firewalls and the switches. All other machines will be virtualized on a single host. One concern that has been is that this approach is complicated (overcomplicated implied), and that the VLANs are only providing an illusion of security, because "VLAN hopping is easy". Is this a valid concern, given that multiple VLANs will be used for a single physical switch port due to virtualization? How would I setup my VLANs appropriately to prevent this risk? Also, I've heard that VMWare ESX has something called "virtual switches". Is this unique to the VMWare hypervisor? If not, is it available with KVM (my planned hypervisor of choice)?. How does that come into play?

• alt+tab moves windows between workspaces and crashes unity

  I have recently been using multiple workspaces in unity but have run into a bug that is making it very difficult to do this effectively. The problem is with alt+tab. When I am focused on a window that is not in the primary (top-left) workspace one of two things happens: Unity restarts (the launcher and menu bar disappear and screen flashes blank before everything reappears) and all of my windows are moved to different workspaces. The focused window is always moved to the primary workspace and other windows are typically moved one workspace to the left. alt+tab will usually function normally after this. Unity completely crashes. The windows in the current workspace are still there, but the launcher and menu bar are gone, I cannot switch between workspaces, and none of the hotkeys work. The same issues occur when using alt+` as well. I have installed ccsm, but have made only minor adjustments with it. I am still using the Unity switcher. I actually uninstalled ccsm hoping that would resolve the issue, but the issue persists. Is there some resolution to this issue? I like Unity and want to keep using it, but having to use the mouse to switch between programs is irritating and enough reason to switch to Gnome.

• mac osx script - find mounted disc with name, copy file from desktop to it, when copy complete, unmount disc

  Is there some kind of mac script which finds a newly mounted disc drive that has the name 'EXAMPLE', then copies a file/folder to it and safely ejects the disc when copy has finished? I don't mind if the script needs to be executed by a short cut. And will it work if there are multiple drives plugged in? The reason I am asking is becuase i have 5000 usb memory sticks that I need to copy about 20mb worth of data to it. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

• The MsC gray zone: How to deal with the "too unexperienced on engineering/too under-qualified for research" situation?

  Last year I've got a MsC degree on CS. On the beginning of the MsC course, I was keen on moving on with research and go for a PhD. However, as the months passed, I started to feel the urge to write software that people would, well, actually use. The programming bug had bitten me, again. So, I decided that before deciding on getting a PhD degree, I would spend some time on the "real world", working as a software developer. Sadly, most companies here in Brazil are "services" companies that seem to be stuck on the 80s when it comes to software development. I have to fend off pushy managers, less-than-competent coworkers and outrageous software requirements (why does everyone seem to need a 50k Oracle license and a behemoth Websphere AS for their CRUD applications?) on a daily basis, and even though I still love software development, the situation is starting to touch a nerve. And, mind you, I'm already lucky for getting a job at a place that isn't a plain software sweatshop. Sure, there are better places around here or I could always try my luck abroad, but then I hit the proverbial brick wall: Sorry, you're too unexperienced as a developer and too under-qualified as a researcher I've already heard this, and variations of that, multiple times. Research position recruiters look for die-hard, publication-ridden, rockstar PhDs, while development position recruiters look for die-hard, experience-ridden, rockstar programmers. To most, my MsC degree seems like a minor bump on my CV (and an outright waste of time for some). Applying for abroad positions is even harder, since the employer would have to deal of the hassle of a VISA process, which I understand that, sometimes, is too much. Now I'm feeling I've reached a dead-end. I'm certain that development (and not research) is my thing, so should I just dismiss my MsC (or play it as a "trump card") and play the "big fish on a small pond" role while I gather some experience and contribute on some open-source projects as a plus? Is there a better way to handle this?

• How to analyze data

  We are working on an application that allows user to search/read some content in a particular domain. We wanted to add some capability in the app which can suggest user some content based on the usage pattern (analyze data based on frequency and relevance). Currently every time user search or read something we do store that information in backend database. We would like to use this data to present some additional content to user. Could someone explain what kind of tools will be required for such a job and any example? And what this concept is called, data analysis? data mining? business intelligence? or something else? Update: Sorry for being too broad, here is an example SQL Database (Just to give an idea, actual db is little different with normalization and stuff) Table: UserArticles Fields: UserName | ArticleId | ArticleTitle | DateVisited | ArticleCategory Table: CategoryArticles Fields: Category | Article Title | Author etc. One Category may have one more articles. One user may have read the same article multiple times (in this case we place additional entry in the user article table. Task: Use the information availabel in UserArticle table and rank categories in order which would be presented to user automatically in other part of application. Factors to be considered are frequency and recency. This might be possible through simple queries or may require specialized tools. Either way, the task is what mention above. I am not too sure which route to take, hence the question. Thoughts??

• Remove languages in translations?

  Hi, I use spell-checker for 4 languages, en, de, fr, and lb. If I enable Spellchecking and writing aids for en, de or fr in System -> Administration -> Language Support there will be multiple versions of each language available, e.g. en , en_CA, en_GB, ... Is there a possibility to select only one of those language versions while enabling the language, or removing the others afterwards. It would be enough to remove them from the selection menu. I would like to use the version which is equal to the country the language originally comes from: e.g. de_DE, fr_FR, en_GB. For lb there is currently only lb_LU so there is no problem (yet). Instead of 4 languages I currently have around 20, which is kind of annoying when switching the language ( which I do quite often). There might be a similar problem for the menu translations, where if I understand correctly you can choose the order in which translations are applied if they exist. Any suggestions?
