• Intercept page request behind firewall return altered content with php and apache

  I'm providing free wifi service and need an ad to be added to all page requests. Currently I have a router forwarding all http requests to an apache server, which redirects all requests to an index.php page. The index.php page reads the request, fetches the content from the appropriate site, and edits the content to include the ad. The problem is that all images and css files etc. cannot be accessed, because when the browser tries to get the image <img src="site.com/image.jpg"> it's just redirected back to the index.php. I can change settings for the router (running dd-wrt) and the webserver (apache2 and php 5.2). Is there a solution that allows content to be edited before returning to the client, and allows css and images to be accessed?

• Memory efficient way of inserting an array of objects with Core Data

  I'm working on a piece of code for an iPhone application that fetches a bunch of data from a server and builds objects from it on the client. It ends up creating roughly 40,000 objects. They aren't displayed to the user, I just need to create instances of NSManagedObject and store them to persistent storage. Am I wrong in thinking that the only way to do this is to create a single object, then save the context? is it best to create the objects all at once, then somehow save them to the context after they're created and stored in some set or array? If so, can one show some example code for how this is done or point me in the direction to code where this is done? The objects themselves are relatively straight forward models with string or integer attributes and don't contain any complex relationships.

• MVC2 jQuery Validation & Custom Business Objects

  I have an application that was built with MVC1 and am in the process of updating to MVC2. I have a custom DLL and BLL, of which the model objects are custom business objects that reside in a separate class library. I was using this validation library in MVC1, which worked great. It worked great, but I want to eliminate the extra plugins and use what is available. Rather than use the Enterprise Library validation attributes I have converted to using DataAnnotations and want to use jQuery validation as the client side validation. My questions are: 1) Is the MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation JS file still required, where do I download. 2) How to you automate the validation to views that do not have models, IE Membership sign in page? 3) How to you add model errors in a custom business layer. • Advice? SSO in N-tiered SOA with mixture of REST and SOAP services

  Hi gang, We are moving to SSO in our N-tiered SOA applications. If all the services were SOAP, I'd be ok with just the WS-Security, WS-Trust, WS-Federation set of protocols. My problem is that many of the services are RESTful (ironic) and those protocols do not address REST services. What is your advice for SSO protecting the REST services in an N-tiered SOA architecture with the following requirements: ideally claims-based identity information available to the REST services original user (eg. bootstrap) information must flow through the tiers so that each service can "ActAs" or "OnBehalfOf" the user support sequences like: WebApp -- REST Svc -- SOAP Svc WebApp -- REST Svc1 -- REST Svc2 WebApp -- SOAP Svc -- REST Svc WebApp -- SOAP Svc1 -- SOAP Svc2 support SSO (and SSOff) service/web app platforms: ASP.Net and WCF Java end-user client platforms: .Net (WSE 3.0 and WCF) flash 10 java javascript and AJAX Normally I'm good at climbing / bashing my way through walls, but this one's knocked me flat. • how secure is NSURLConnection over https

  I've been reading through a number of questions on this site regarding NSURLConnection and https, but most relate to "untrusted" certificates and how to allow them nonetheless. My question is a little more basic. I am building an app for a client who handle online donations, and I would like to load their donation script using an NSLURLRequest and POST the values of credit card details (entered in the app). Does NSURLConnection (when connecting to a https url) ensure the encryption of those details as they are sent to the donation script on my clients server? Sorry if this is a basic question, I just couldn't find a place in the apple docs that guaranteed this.

• Silverlight Threading and its usage

  Hello Experts, Scenario : I am working on LOB application, as in silverlight every call to service is Async so automatically UI is not blocked when the request is processed at server side. Silverlight also supports threading as per my understanding if you are developing LOB application threads are most useful when you need to do some IO operation but as i am not using OOB application it is not possible to access client resource and for all server request it is by default Async. In above scenario is there any usage of Threading or can anyone provide some good example where by using threading we can improve performance. I have tried to search a lot on this topic but everywhere i have identified some simple threading example from which it is very difficult to understand the real benefit. Thanks for help

• IIS7 Integrated Pipeline - Response.End not ending the request.

  I have the following bit of code that worked as expected before we upgraded to Integrated Pipeline in IIS7. public void RedirectPermanently(string url, bool clearCookies) { Response.ClearContent(); Response.StatusCode = 301; Response.AppendHeader("Location", url); if(clearCookies) { Response.Cookies.Clear(); Response.Flush(); Response.End(); } } Previously when this method was executed, if clearCookies was true, the response would be sent to the client and request processing would end. Now under Integrated Pipeline Response.End() does not seem to end processing. The page continues running as if the method was never called. Big question is, why and what changed! Thanks.

• Is Visual Studio 2010 WebDev WebServer (Cassini) 64-bit compatible?

  I'm now developing on Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit OS (Windows Server 2008 64-bit). While the apps I write are 64-bit capable, as is IIS7, the built-in ASP.NET Development Server (aka Cassini aka WebDev.Webserver.exe) runs as 32-bit. This brings up a plethora of issues, such as: 32-bit and 64-bit applications have separate HKLM\Software registry homes There are 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the SQL Server Client Network Utility Other fun surprises I haven't discovered but I'm sure will spring up While I am finding workarounds for most of this, I have to ask... Does anyone who has played with the Visual Studio 2010 preview bits on 64-bit architecture know if the development web servers can handle 64-bit, and if so, are there options for which mode to run it in? (Like a checkbox in the project properties, for instance)

  The browser on the iPhone is capable of using advanced web technologies introduced in HTML5. One of these is the app cache that allows web pages to run on the client, from the cache, without a connection to the internet. Together with Local Storage you can also save data permanently "in" the page. My question is, would it then be possible to make a website that when visited and set as a web clip (bookmark on the home screen), could be accessed again, at any moment. Using HTML5, Javascript and css, you can make some very good apps and at the same time avoid the pricey developer fee, the harsh app approval and the single platform development platform? Or am I just dreaming?

• Supplementary Developer Laptop

  I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter. It will be paved with Windows 7 Ultimate optical drive omitted would be a plus. weight and battery life aren't so important because the machine will be plugged in almost all the time.

• Using Oracle Proxy Authentication with JPA (eclipselink-Style)

  Security is a very intriguing topic. You will find it everywhere and you need to implement it everywhere. Yes, you need. Unfortunately, one can easily forget it while implementing the last mile. The Last Mile In a multi-tier application it is a common practice to use connection pools between the business layer and the database layer. Connection pools are quite useful to speed database connection creation and to split the load. Another very common practice is to use a specific, often called technical, user to connect to the database. This user has authentication and authorization rules that apply to all application users. Imagine you've put every effort to define roles for different types of users that use your application. These roles are necessary to differentiate between normal users, premium users, and administrators (I bet you will find or already have more roles in your application). While these user roles are pretty well used within your application, once the flow of execution enters the database everything is gone. Each and every user just has one role and is the same database user. Issues? What Issues? As long as things go well, this is not a real issue. However, things do not go well all the time. Once your application becomes famous performance decreases in certain situations or, more importantly, current and upcoming regulations and laws require that your application must be able to apply different security measures on a per user role basis at every stage of your application. If you only have a bunch of users with the same name and role you are not able to find the application usage profile that causes the performance issue, or which user has accessed data that he/she is not allowed to. Another thread to your role concept is that databases tend to be used by different applications and tools. These tools can be developer tools like SQL*Plus, SQL Developer, etc. or end user applications like BI Publisher, Oracle Forms and so on. These tools have no idea of your applications role concept and access the database the way they think is appropriate. A big oversight for your perfect role model and a big nightmare for your Chief Security Officer. Speaking of the CSO, brings up another issue: Password management. Once your technical user account is compromised, every user is able to do things that he/she is not expected to do from the design of your application. Counter Measures In the Oracle world a common counter measure is to use Virtual Private Database (VPD). This restricts the values a database user can see to the allowed minimum. However, it doesn't help in regard of a connection pool user, because this one is still not the real user. Oracle Proxy Authentication Another feature of the Oracle database is Proxy Authentication. First introduced with version 9i it is a quite useful feature for nearly every situation. The main idea behind Proxy Authentication is, to create a crippled database user who has only connect rights. Even if this user is compromised the risks are well understood and fairly limited. This user can be used in every situation in which you need to connect to the database, no matter which tool or application (see above) you use.The proxy user is perfect for multi-tier connection pools. CREATE USER app_user IDENTIFIED BY abcd1234; GRANT CREATE SESSION TO app_user; But what if you need to access real data? Well, this is the primary use case, isn't it? Now is the time to bring the application's role concept into play. You define database roles that define the grants for your identified user groups. Once you have these groups you grant access through the proxy user with the application role to the specific user. CREATE ROLE app_role_a; GRANT app_role_a TO scott; ALTER USER scott GRANT CONNECT THROUGH app_user WITH ROLE app_role_a; Now, hr has permission to connect to the database through the proxy user. Through the role you can restrict the hr's rights the are needed for the application only. If hr connects to the database directly all assigned role and permissions apply. Testing the Setup To test the setup you can use SQL*Plus and connect to your database: $ sqlplus app_user[hr]/abcd1234 Java Persistence API The Java Persistence API (JPA) is a fairly easy means to build applications that retrieve data from the database and put it into Java objects. You use plain old Java objects (POJOs) and mixin some Java annotations that define how the attributes of the object are used for storing data from the database into the Java object. Here is a sample for objects from the HR sample schema EMPLOYEES table. When using Java annotations you only specify what can not be deduced from the code. In both worlds you normally create a Facade to retrieve or store the values of the Entities to or from the database. The Facade does this via an EntityManager which will be injected by the Java EE container. Installing the Oracle Database Instance Client software works perfectly. Provide the user name that connects through the proxy user This part needs some modification of your application software and session facade. Session Facade Changes In the Session Facade we must ensure that every call that goes through the EntityManager must be prepared correctly and uniquely assigned to this session. The second is really important, as the EntityManager works with a connection pool and can not guarantee that we set the proxy user on the connection that will be used for the database activities. To avoid changing every method call of the Session Facade we provide a method to set the username of the user that connects through the proxy user.   I have a WCF Web Service with basicHTTPBinding , the server side the transfer mode is streamedRequest as the client will be sending us large file in the form of memory stream. But on client side when i use transfer mode as streamedRequest its giving me a this errro "The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request" And when i look in to trace information , i see this as the error message Exception: There is a problem with the XML that was received from the network. See inner exception for more details. InnerException: The body of the message cannot be read because it is empty. I am able to send up to 5MB of data using trasfermode as buffered , but it will effect the performance of my web service in the long run , if there are many clients who are trying to access the service in buffered transfer mode.   I've been working on a project for a few weeks now and today is the last day before it goes to client (typical). For some reason Im suddenly getting the following error when building my project (sim or device), even though other projects build fine /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.3.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/Headers/UIKit.h:61:42: error: UIKit/UIVideoEditorController.h: No such file or directory The last thing I was trying to do was use the UIMessage framework for email, but I have stripped that out!?!? N.B I have checked and the .h file does appear to be in the same folder as the UIKit.h file

• SyncFramework upgrade from 1.0 to 2.0 Sql Server CE database change tracking issue

  I'm trying to upgrade an application that uses Sync Framework 1.0 to synchronise a SqlServerCe database with SqlServer 2005. On the client, the existing database already has change tracking enabled, but when the sync is initiated SyncFramework 2.0 fails to find the last Sync Received anchor and then tries to re=initialize the Change tracking, which fails. I get the exception... {System.Exception} = {"The specified change tracking operation is not supported. To carry out this operation on the table, disable the change tracking on the table, and enable the change tracking."} It seems like all I can do is delete the local database and recreate it. Which is not a great solution for us, since some of the data in the clients database is not synced with the server, and our users would prefer not to loose this data in the upgrade. Is there any reason why SyncFramework 2.0 cannot locate the existing Last received sync anchor?

  Hi All I've just started a new job and noticed that the analysts computers are connected to the network at 100Mbps. The queries we run against the MySQL server can easily be 500MB+ and it seems at times when the servers are under high load the DBAs kill low priority jobs as they are taking too long to run. My question is this... How much of this server time is spent executing the request, and how much time is spent returning the data to the client? Could the query speeds be improved by upgrading the network connections to 1Gbps? Thanks Rob

  I am investigating moving a thick client SQL based Delphi application to Multi Tier thin clients, and have been looking at using Datasnap in Delphi 2010. I have worked through the White Paper written by Bob Swart and extended this further. My main question really is that I want to make the server side efficient in terms of connections and SQL Queries due to multiple queries being run and remaining open at the same time to interrogate data, can anyone point me in a direction for guidance on how to design a real world Datasnap Server application, as the demo's don't go into enough detail.   I'm in the process of setting up a WCF Data Services web service and I'm trying to sort out the security configuration. Although there's quite a lot of documentation out there for configuring WCF security, a lot of it seems to be outmoded or does not apply to my scenario. Ultimately, I am planning on managing authorization of operations via change interceptors. Thus, all I really need is the simplest way to permit a client to pass credentials along with a request and to be able to authenticate those credentials against either AD or an ASP.NET membership provider (I'd much prefer the latter unless it makes things much more complicated). I'm intending to manage encryption at the transport level (i.e. HTTPS). I'm hoping that the eventual solution does not involve a huge web.config. Likewise, I'd much prefer to avoid writing custom code for the purpose of authentication.

• Silverlight RIA Services. Query fails on large table but works with Where clause

  I have a somewhat large table, maybe 2000 rows by 50 columns. When using the most basic imaginable RIA implementation. Create one-table Model Create DomainService Drop datagrid onto MainPage.xaml Drop datasource onto datagrid Ctrl-F5 I get this error: System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.DomainOperationException: Load operation faild for query. Value cannot be null. Error is much larger, but thats the beginning of it. The weird thing is that if I narrow the results down with a where clause on the GetQuery, it works fine. In fact six different querys which together result in all of the rows being called works fine also. So basically, I'm sure its not some sort of rogue row. Why do I get this "Value cannot be null" error if I query the whole table? Thanks

• Push DVCS repository to master without needing codebase

  To work on a client's staging environment I have to connect through a VPN which locks all normal network traffic and prevents any connection to the Internet. This would immediately prevent any of the "normal" VCS solutions from being used as it's not possible to gain access to the server. A solution to this would be to create a DVCS repository (git?) locally and then push changes to the master, as and when needed. There is one flaw in this plan. The entire codebase is around 14GB. To download all of this over the internet would take some time, especially when I'm likely to be working on 3 or 4 different machines in each case. This seems silly and overkill for a DVCS. TL;DR Can any DVCS solution allow you to push to a master server/repo without needing the codebase? Bad example: copy the .git folder (not the 14GB codebase) to another directory and push this to the master once disconnected from the VPN.
