• Freezes when finishing installation of ubuntu 12.10

  I wanted to install Ubuntu next to my Windows 7 and made a 100GB partition for that. After that I downloaded the Image for burning the installation cd. As soon as I started to boot from that DVD, my computer made some crackling noises and then froze completely. I had to press the power button in order to shut it down. After that I decided to download the Installer Version for Windows and startet installing it on the E:\ partition named Ubuntu. So far so good, the installer finished and told me to restart my computer. I did that and Ubuntu wanted to finish the installation. As soon as that started, the computer made some crackling noises again and froze completely. Then I tried the Safe Graphics option, or whatever it is called, and it froze again. I would really like to have Ubuntu installed on my system, because I like it. My computer components are the following: Mainboard: Gigabyte X58-USB3 Processor: Intel Core i7 960 RAM: 8GB 2000Mhz Graphicscard: NVidia Geforce GTX 570 HDD: 1 TB 7200rpm with 3 partitions(100GB W7, 100GB Ubuntu, 800GB Data)

• Is it better to hard code data or find an algorithm?

  I've been working on a boardgame that has a hex grid as the board (the upper right grid in the image below) Since the board will never change and the spaces on the board will always be linked to the same other spaces around it, should I just hard code every space with the values that I need? Or should I use various algorithms to calculate links and traversals? To be more specific, my board game is a 4 player game where each player has a 5x5x5x5x5x5 hex grid (again, the upper right grid in th eimage above). The object is to get from the bottom of the grid to the top, with various obstacles in the way, and each players being able to attack eachother from the edge of their grid onto other players based on a range multiplier. Since the players grid will never change and the distance of any arbitrary space from the edge of the grid will always be the same, should I just hard code this number into each of the spaces, or should I still use a breadth first search algorithm when players are attacking? The only con I can think of for hard coding everything is that I'm going to code 9+ 2(5+6+7+8) = 61 individual cells. Is there anything else that I'm missing that I should consider using more complex algorithms?

• XNA Masking Mayhem

  I'd like to start by mentioning that I'm just an amateur programmer of the past 2 years with no formal training and know very little about maximizing the potential of graphics hardware. I can write shaders and manipulate a multi-layered drawing environment, but I've basically stuck to minimalist pixel shaders. I'm working on putting dynamic point light shadows in my 2d sidescroller, and have had it working to a reasonable degree. Just chucking it in without working on serious optimizations outside of basic culling, I can get 50 lights or so onscreen at once and still hover around 100 fps. The only issue is that I'm on a very high end machine and would like to target the game at as many platforms I can, low and high end. The way I'm doing shadows involves a lot of masking before I can finally draw the light to my light layer. Basically, my technique to achieveing such shadows is as follows. See pics in this album http://imgur.com/a/m2fWw#0 The dark gray represents the background tiles, the light gray represents the foreground tiles, and the yellow represents the shadow-emitting foreground tile. I'll draw the light using a radial gradient and a color of choice I'll then exclude light from the mask by drawing some geometry extending through the tile from my point light. I actually don't mask the light yet at this point, but I'm just illustrating the technique in this image Finally, I'll re-include the foreground layer in my mask, as I only want shadows to collect on the background layer and finally multiply the light with it's mask to the light layer My question is simple - How can I go about reducing the amount of render target switches I need to do to achieve the following: a. Draw mask to exclude shadows from the foreground to it's own target once per frame b. For each light that emits shadows, -Begin light mask as full white -Render shadow geometry as transparent with an opaque blendmode to eliminate shadowed areas from the mask -Render foreground mask back over the light mask to reintroduce light to the foreground c. Multiply light texture with it's individual mask to the main light layer.

  Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. • Best choice for off-site backup: dd vs tar

  I have two 1TB single-partition hard disks configured as RAID1, of which I would like to make an off-site backup on a third disk, which I am still to buy. The idea is to store the backup at a relative's house, considerably far away from my place, in the hope that all the information will be safe in the case of a global thermonuclear apocalypse. Of course, this backup would be well encrypted. What I still have to decide is whether I am going to simply tar the entire partition or, instead, use dd to create an image of the disks. Is there any non-trivial difference between these two approaches that I could be overlooking? This off-site backup would be updated no more than two or three times a year, in the best of the cases, so performance should not be a factor to be pondered at all. What, and why, would you use if you were me? dd, tar, or a third option?

• Hylafax and "No response to MPS"

  We have an Hylafax 5.2.5 CentOS 5 installation hosted inside a Xen virtual machine. It works quite well, but now I'm in the process of upgrading/migrating it to a KVM virtual machine running Ubuntu 10.04 and Hylafax 5.5.1 (compiled from source using http://sourceforge.net/projects/hylafax/files/hylafax%20debian%20build%20files/ ) The problem I'm having is that - while receiving works fine - sending faxes is extremely unreliable, I get lots of "No response to MPS repeated 3 tries", or "Failure to transmit clean ECM image data." The line, modem and configuration files I'm using are the same as before, so I thought that it could be a KVM scheduling issue, but even setting cpu_shares to 10240 instead of 1024 doesn't change a thing... • Get cryptic error when trying to create a snapshot of any of my VMs

  I'm using Oracle VM VirtualBox. I have 6 VMs that I've imported. When I click on an individual VM, and then click the camera image (or Ctrl+Shift+S) to take a snapshot, the snapshot process fails and VirtualBox gives the following error: Failed to create a snapshot of the virtual machine vmName. Details: Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005) This happens not only for one of my VMs, but all of them, if I try to take a snapshot of each one separately, one at a time. My computer is a Windows 7 machine. I have 200 GB free on my hard drive, and I see no reason why the error should occur. I can import VMs, run them, and clone then without any problems. Can anyone tell me what to do to fix the issue?

• Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.04 via VNC does not refresh

  I've tried tightvncserver and vnc4server on Ubuntu. I've tried tightvnc viewer and ultravnc viewer on Windows XP. I can connect from Windows to Ubuntu with any combination, but there is no screen refresh: I can drag a window on Ubuntu using my mouse in Windows or type into a terminal in Ubuntu from my keyboard in Windows, but the image does not change on Windows. I can request a screen refresh from Windows but the screen does not update. I am running the ATI driver on Ubuntu. I've tried stepping the System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects down from Extra to Normal with no effect.

• Best/Preferred software for photography.

  I am just getting into photography as a hobby, and am looking for some good tools for image uploading/browsing/editing. I am currently using the Canon EOS utility that came with the camera for uploading, Picasa for browsing, and GIMP for editing. Pros: The files are stored using the standard file system (no proprietary library like iPhoto) Great photo editing possibilities Free (except the Canon Utility, but that was bundled) Cons: Multiple programs Hard to view the Exif Data (I like the way that iPhoto displays the data) Over-simplified editing tools in Picasa What other tools should I look into? Also, I occasionally shoot in RAW, and would prefer Mac support (better monitor), but I also have windows and linux machines.

• Ubuntu 9.10 x86_32 with PAE causes graphics issues, mainly slowness

  I've tried the 64bit version and found I was constantly hitting a brick wall trying to get 32bit stuff to run; I'd previously used PAE on 9.04 without any issues so figured I'd give it a shot. However, on 9.10 it seems PAE or the process of enabling PAE breaks the nvidia drivers/module somewhat as performance is terrible; I can't even enable desktop effects and there's lots of artifacting on random controls. Disabling the pae image and rebooting fixes the issue however I'm then stuck with "only" 2.7Gb of ram and unable to use the full 8gb that's installed. Is there somthing special I need to do when using pae and nVidia drivers or should I be using 64bit and just figure out how to force run 32bit packages? :-p

  i was poking around in the windows task manager, and i found this cool network throughput graphing thing. so i wanted to see it max out, so i started downloading a 1.8gb image (from the localhost to a remote system). but, much to my surprise, it looked like this: i count 16 dips, so i divided the 1.8gb into 16 and i got 115mb. then i looked up the mtu of ip, and i knew the mtu of ethernet from my reading, both far smaller than 115mb. and since tcp is connection orientated, it doesn't have an mtu.

• How to copy a dynamic TrueCrypt volume quickly?

  I have created a dynamic TrueCrypt volume file, set it size to 40 GiB and put about 20 GiB of files on it. When I open the volume file properties it says "Size: 40.0 GB, Size on disk: 23.0 GB". When I try to move the volume file to another physical partition it takes a lot of time as it tries to copy all the 40 GB instead of just 20 GB that the volume file actually takes. Also, when it is less than 40 GB free on the target drive it says insufficient space even though it is more than enough space considering how much does the image file actually take. How do I overcome this? Creating a new volume file on the target drive works but needless to say I'd like a better solution.

• Communication between WCF service [library] and Self-host [Winform]

  Introduction: I have a WCF service library and a self-host Winform. Service features is File explorer including (copy, move, delete, new folder, delete... etc) and Task Manager (run, kill, update list). Then now I want to add other features like chatting between self-host and client, send an image from client to self-host so when it received, it is shown in a pictureBox in a new form. Till now I have two endpoints for (Task Manager, File Manager) that runs under one service "MainService". And I set up all the connections using DotNet 4.0 WCF Configuration and Wizards, and I'm using netTcpBinding. Problem: I need to know how to communicate with between WCF service lib and self-host, so I can append a received chat from client on self-host form's textbox TextBoxChat. And also call a client callback from self-host when Send button clicked, to send the message from self-host textbox TextBoxMessage. Let's say this's self-host ChatForm So is it possible to do that in WCF? I would prefer to run ChatEndpoint under MainService, so all Endpoints use one port.

• Project collision shapes to plane for 2.5D collision detection

  I am working on a top down 2.5D game. In the game anything that overlaps on the screen should be 'colliding' with each other regardless of whether they are on the same plane in the 3D world. This is illustrated below from a side-ways view: The orange and green circles are spheres floating in the 3D world. They are projected onto a plane parallel to the viewport plane (y = 0 in the image) and if they overlap there is a collision event between them. These spheres are attached to other meshes to represent the sphere bounding boxes for collisions. The way I plan to implement this at the moment is the following: Get the 3D world position at the center of the sphere. Use Camera.WorldToViewportPoint to project the point to the viewport plane. Move a Sphere Collider with the radius of the sphere to that point. Test for collisions using unity colliders. My question is how to extend this to work for rotated cuboids. For instance if I have two rotated cuboids, if I follow the logic above it would not work as intended as the cuboids may not collide but they could still be intersected on the view plane. An example is below: Is there a way to project a cuboid that would be aligned with the plane? Would it be a valid cuboid for all rotations if I did this?

• How to connect to WPA2 encrypted wireless-network when booted from CloneZilla Live-CD?

  My intention is to perform a backup of my laptop's (Dell Vostro 3350) sda1 disk to my desktop. After some googling I decided to use CloneZilla for that purpose. I have an OpenSSH server installed and running on my desktop. So I inserted CloneZilla CD to CD-rom, booted from it, then chose an option smth like "use ssh server to store image". Then I got an invitation to choose a network interface. I chose wlan0 and entered shell to manualy configure connection. And that's where I got into trouble, for wifi-network which I wanted to use is WPA2-encrypted, and I don't know how to connect to it from command line. Can somebody assist me. Appreciation for advance.

List All Stored Procedure Modified in Last N Days If SQL Server suddenly start behaving in un-expectable behavior and if stored procedure were changed recently, following script can be used to check recently modified stored procedure. If a stored procedure was created but never modified afterwards modified date and create a date for that stored procedure are same. Count Duplicate Records – Rows Validate Field For DATE datatype using function ISDATE() We always checked DATETIME field for incorrect data type. One of the user input date as 30/2/2007. The date was sucessfully inserted in the temp table but while inserting from temp table to final table it crashed with error. We had now task to validate incorrect date value before we insert in final table. Jr. Developer asked me how can he do that? We check for incorrect data type (varchar, int, NULL) but this is incorrect date value. • Unattended grub configuration after kernel upgrade

  Today I have been working on automatic deployment of an ubuntu server. I got stuck on automatic updating of the server using apt-get upgrade trying to upgrade to a new kernel. The log looks like this: Setting up linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic (3.2.0-24.39) ... Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst (...) Then a question is presented: Package configuration +---------------------------------¦ +---------------------------------+ ¦ A new version of /boot/grub/menu.lst is available, but the version ¦ ¦ installed currently has been locally modified. ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ What would you like to do about menu.lst? ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ install the package maintainer's version ¦ ¦ keep the local version currently installed ¦ ¦ show the differences between the versions ¦ ¦ show a side-by-side difference between the versions ¦ ¦ show a 3-way difference between available versions ¦ ¦ do a 3-way merge between available versions (experimental) ¦ ¦ start a new shell to examine the situation ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ <Ok> ¦ ¦ ¦ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ The desired outcome would be to select the first option and to continue: Replacing config file /run/grub/menu.lst with new version Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done After running the upgrade by hand, I used debconf-get-selections to inspect the correct answer for the question (see other settings). However, setting this using debconf-set-selections presented me with the same question: debconf-set-selections <<< "grub grub/update_grub_changeprompt_threeway select install_new" apt-get -y dist-upgrade How can this question be automated?

• SQL Developer: BLOBs and the External Editor

  We already know how easy it is to view images and plain text with the BLOB editor, yes? But what if I have in my column a bunch of PDFs stored? I want to see that stuff without having to save the file, finding it, and then opening it. Why can’t I just automatically open it directly from the database? Well, it seems you can. Here’s how. External Editors Step 1: Make sure you have the file types and associated editors defined in the preferences. External editors available from the BLOB viewer Based on what’s going on in your OS, you’ll have several of these already defined. If not, it’s pretty simple to add them manually. Now, assuming you’ve got some fun data loaded up, let’s try it out. A PDF As you can see in the screenshot above, PDF is mapped to Adobe Reader. I just happen to have a PDF loaded into a BLOB, let’s send it to the external editor. Click on the hyperlinked text to load the PDF straight to Adobe Here’s it working in action (click on the image to see the animation): If it’s a big file, you will see a dialog where we’re downloading the data. Now if I were to edit said document and save it back to the database via the ‘Load’ mechanism, then we’ve come full circle.

• Keeping Aspect Screen Ration While Stays in Center

  I sqw and I tried this suggestion on PISTACHIO BRAINSTORMIN* on how to make a good and adaptive screen ration. For every different screen size, let's say I put the perfect circle as a Texture in LibGDX and played it on screen. Here's the blueberry image example and it's perfectly rounded: When I played it on the Google Nexus 7, the circle turn into a slightly oblonng shape, resembling as it was being flatten a bit. Please observe this snapshot below and you can see the blueberry is almost but slightly not perfectly rounded: Now, when I tried the suggested code for aspect ratio, the perfect circle retained but another problem is occured. The problem is that I expecting for a view on center but instead it's been moved to the right offset leaving with a half black screen.
