• Looking for job advice [closed]

  I am a software developer for a government agency in DC, and I have recently completed one year of employment. I am generally dissatisfied with my experiences here. I do not want to gripe too much, but I do not spend a lot of time doing actual development on projects. I am asked to do everything under the sun: write requirements, review specs, test, attend random meetings, but actual coding makes up a small fraction of my time. The coding itself is fairly straightforward and simple so it feels like I am not growing from my experiences. I am not tasked with more challenging work, and I find the experiences are not rewarding. If I had a stronger resume/more work experience, I'd leave the position immediately but combined with the present economy, I am hesitant to leave. I have several questions: Does anybody have experiences like this? How did you make the most of it? I am currently doing some side projects, making simple webpages for people, but aside from that, and open source projects, what other things are out there? What are general benchmarks for a developer after one year of professional experience? What should I be expected to know/do? I am outsider (coming from a math/science background) so I do not know what exactly I should know/do. Is it possible to obtain a mentorship with a mid/senior developer to learn? If so, how can I go about making contacts in the DC area?

  This is my first ever attempt at working with Ubuntu. I have only ever installed Windows in the past and that may be the problem. I purchased all new hardware this week and I would really like to give Ubuntu a chance (especially since I don't want to buy another Windows license). • Anyone can suggest some Game Frameworks for GNU/Linux? [closed]

  So I've been developing a little bit with XNA + C# in Windows, not really much: just some 2D stuff, but I've found that XNA is a really good framework. I'm a GNU/Linux user, and I'm definitely migrating my desktop to Gentoo Linux (I've been using Arch in my laptop for a while now). But, of course, I need a C# + XNA alternative... I'm not really an expert in any language, so I can really pick up anything (except, maybe, Functional ones), I prefer C-Like languages like Java or Ruby, I tried Python but found the Whitespace syntax confusing. I would like to hear some of you'r suggestions, I'm not asking for "the best", but for "some suggestions", so I think this is objective enough. Probably you're going to suggest C++ + SDL, but I would prefer something more "High Level" like XNA, but I'm open to discuss anything. So... any ideas ? Note: I think this questions meets the guidelines for this site, if it doesn't: please not only downvote this question, but comment on what can I do to improve it. Thanks. PS: 2D Games, not 3D

• Help w/ iPad 1 performance for tile-based DOM Javascript game

  I've made a 2D tile-based game with DOM/Javascript. For each level, the map data is loaded and parsed, then lots of tiles ( elements) are drawn onto a larger "map" element. The map is inside of a container that hides overflow, so I can move the map element around by positioning it absolutely. Works a treat on desktop browsers, and my iPad 2. My problem is that performance is really bad on iPad 1. The performance hit is directly related to all the tile elements in my map, because when I remove or reduce the number of tiles drawn, performance improves. Optimizing my collision detection loop has no effect. My first thought was to batch groups of tiles into containers, then hide/show them based on proximity to the player, however this still causes a huge hiccup when the player moves and a new group of tiles is displayed (offscreen). Actually removing the out-of-sight elements from the DOM, then re-adding them as necessary is no faster. Anyone know of any tips that might speed up DOM performance here? My map is 1920 x 1920 pixels, so as far as I know should be within the WebKit texture limit on iOS 5/iPad. The map is being moved with CSS3 transforms, and I've picked all the other obvious low-hanging fruit.

• Ubuntu 12.10 won't display properly after kernel upgrade

  After updating a system today, Ubuntu's doesn't display correctly. The desktop now looks like this. It was working properly before. I had to use the terminal to run synaptic package manager, so I could view the update history; which is as follows: Commit Log for Wed Nov 7 11:50:36 2012 Upgraded the following packages: linux-image-generic (3.5.0.17.19) to 3.5.0.18.21 Installed the following packages: linux-image-3.5.0-18-generic (3.5.0-18.29) linux-image-extra-3.5.0-18-generic (3.5.0-18.29) Prior to this issue, the last active driver was nvidia-current-updates, version 304.51. I tried using the nvidia-current driver, version 304.51.really.304.43 instead, but the problem persists. I tried running nvidia-settings from terminal, so I could try configuring something, but the application informs that the Nvidia driver is not being used. As the x-swat repository has nothing for Quantal, I desperately used the unstable x-edgers repository & upgraded, but to no avail; so I purged it. The display should normally be full HD, but the only available resolutions now are 1024x768(4:3) and 800x600(4:3). The system is Dell XPS-L702X, with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M, and 17" screen. How can I fix this problem? Update: I tried using the Nouveau third-party driver & this fixes the issue. However, if you have any idea how to get the Nvidia drivers working properly with the latest kernel, please share; as I've noticed some videos playing very slowly on the system, though I'm not sure exactly why.

• Network printer problem with 12.04

  I had an HP LaserJet 3030 printer connected to an Ubuntu box. It worked fine with 11.10. I was able to print from Ubuntu as well as from Windows and Mac from the home network. About a month or so ago, I upgraded 11.10 to 12.04, then things started to falling apart. My Windows 7 laptop couldn't print to the printer any more. Today, I installed many updates on 12.04, hoping that would fix the printing problem. Unfortunately, it made the situation much worse. Now not only my Windows 7 laptop won't print, my XP desktop won't print either. Every time I print something from the Windows computer, the Ubuntu box logs an error message in /var/log/samba/log.'machineName' as: _spoolss_OpenPrinterEx: Cannot open a printer handle for printer \\server. It is interesting that it uses the server name as the printer, not the \\server\xyzprinter as the printer name. Anyone had a similar problem? Anyway to work around the problem?

• Career advice on whether to stick with coding or move on to tech. lead\management [closed]

  I'm at a point in my career where I need to decide what to do next. I've mainly done C# desktop development (with a little python and Silverlight) for 5 or 6 years and I'm trying to decide whether to start learning JavaScript\HTML or to moving into a role where I do less coding and more tech. lead\management role. With all the talk around HTML5\JavaScript, the rise of mobile and the changes with Windows 8 (metro at least) I wonder if I should stick with coding to get some experience in these areas before moving on. But at the same time if I decide stick with coding for a ‘couple more years’ I will probably be faced with the same situation with some other new\interesting technology that I feel I should learn before moving on. I feel if I stick just with coding I'm limiting my career options but if I move to tech. lead\management I will loose my coding skills. Is going one direction or the other going to limiting my career options in the future? I know that there is no real answer to this question so I’m really just looking for some thoughts from others and perhaps experiences from other people that faced similar situations. Thanks

  Traditionally, my programs do their work in the background and when I do have to make an interface for some reason, they often do not need to be complex which means I can use a simple Windows Forms or console application. But lets be honest-- Windows Forms? That is so ... ancient! Instead I have been looking at Windows 8. A new interface, different, maybe better-- but fun to give a try. Which means XAML. Now, XAML isn't all that hard in concept. Panel here, button there-- A smattering of XML. My question in short: Where can I find resources that teach me how to write good XAML code for Windows 8 applications? The long version: How do I combine XAML constructs to achieve effects? Horizontal panels with multiple sections you can scroll through with your finger, the proper way? How should you use default style resources Windows 8 might give you by default? How do I properly create a panel with user info on the right? Left aligned stackpanels with embedded dockpanels? Yes? No? Why?

• Ubuntu 12.10 wont boot

  im new to using Ubuntu and just bought a HP Pavilion g6-2240sa with windows 8 pre installed. I made a bootable USB with Ubuntu on it and installed alsongside windows, for 2 days it worked fine, I got into Ubuntu by doing an advanced restart from windows 8 and then booting Ubuntu from the partition it made. When i did the advanced restart today there was only 1 HDD i could select ( there were 3 before windows, a restore partition that was already there when i got the computer and Ubuntu) so i booted from the USB again and re-installed Ubuntu. then did an advanced restart and the 3 partitions where there again, i booted from Ubuntu and now heres my problem. I get the Ubuntu background when its loading then its just a black screen with some writing, its not on long enough to read, then just a black screen with a white _ and the top left corner that does nothing, i have to restat the computer and it auto boots into windows 8. im a little confused as the first time i installed Ubuntu it worked fine until the partition dissaperd), the second time i installed i did everything the same except it found the old Ubuntu so i reinstalled it and now is donst work.

• Can't login to Unity 3d after enabling Xinerama for a short moment

  Today I connected a second monitor to my computer. I set it up using nVidia's control panel, and all was working quite well, so I figured it won't be a problem to try Xinerama, just to see the difference between that and twinview. After enabling Xinerama and restarting the X session, I saw that I was logged into a Unity 2d session. I thought it was a problem with Xinerama, so I switched back to twinview, but it still logged me into Unity 2d. I tried disconnecting the second monitor, no luck: still Unity 2d. I tried changing GPU drivers and installing drivers from a separate ppa, and still I was logged into Unity 2d. Up until this point, I didn't have any problem logging into Unity 3d. It only happened after I tried using Xinerama. I should note that I was doing all this while updates were going on in the background, so it could be something related to that, though I can't imagine what (I tried booting with another kernel, but no luck). So what exactly happened? Did changing the mode to Xinerama triggered some other changes that I'm not aware of? Did these updates cause a certain malfunction in the driver? Is it something else?

  I just installed Kubuntu 12.04.2 and do not have an internet connection. I also cannot access the Desktop and only have the terminal. When I enter xlcock I get Error: Can't open display:. I believe this is because I do not have the correct drivers and need to download them ... using the internet which I can't access. • Why is Ubuntu unmounting my primary hard drive?

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop (an Asus G73j), dual-booting Windows 7 if that matters. After using the computer for couple of hours or so, I get a popup complaining that a file was unmounted, then my GNOME desktop panels disappear. I can't save any unsaved work (the file browser shows "Filesystem" as totally empty), and other programs break in odd ways (like Chrome can't browse to any new pages, but keeps current ones going... at least I still have Pandora to listen to when this happens!). I've tried looking in the system logs to no avail; I'm assuming that it can't write any errors to the logs because, of course, the logs are on the primary hard drives. This started happening maybe a few days ago. Yesterday I upgraded from 10.4, but I believe it was happening before then. Any advice for figuring this out? EDIT: It just happened again, and I heard a small little clicky sound from the hard drive about five seconds before things went south. I'm thinking I should start backing up ASAP. In response to a comment, here's the dmesg output: http://askubuntu.pastebin.com/uYGshBay Also, the SMART status says the disk has a few bad sectors, and the detailed data says there are 14. It says it passed the self-assessment though. Lastly, this doesn't seem to be happening when I'm on Windows. I recently re-enabled ureadahead (which I disabled ages ago because it was causing Ubuntu to hang at the startup logo), could that be the source of the problem? I've disabled it again to see.

• Information about rendering, batches, the graphical card, performance etc. + XNA?

  I know the title is a bit vague but it's hard to describe what I'm really looking for, but here goes. When it comes to CPU rendering, performance is mostly easy to estimate and straightforward, but when it comes to the GPU due to my lack of technical background information, I'm clueless. I'm using XNA so it'd be nice if theory could be related to that. So what I actually wanna know is, what happens when and where (CPU/GPU) when you do specific draw actions? What is a batch? What influence do effects, projections etc have? Is data persisted on the graphics card or is it transferred over every step? When there's talk about bandwidth, are you talking about a graphics card internal bandwidth, or the pipeline from CPU to GPU? Note: I'm not actually looking for information on how the drawing process happens, that's the GPU's business, I'm interested on all the overhead that precedes that. I'd like to understand what's going on when I do action X, to adapt my architectures and practices to that. Any articles (possibly with code examples), information, links, tutorials that give more insight in how to write better games are very much appreciated. Thanks :)

• Having extreme issues getting Compiz working on Ubuntu 11.10 (32-bit)

  I have been working very hard the past few days to try to get Compiz configured and working correctly but I have been running into a lot of issues. I first installed the CompizConfig Settings Manager and tried different features such as the desktop cube and couldn't get any of them to work. Then I read that I may not have the right graphics card drivers installed (Nvidia GT540m). So I went into the Additional Drivers tool and it shows that 'no proprietary drivers are in use on this system', which struck me as a bit odd as when I very first installed Ubuntu it showed that my Nvidia drivers were installed an active until I downloaded and installed the updates to Ubuntu and since then it's shown empty. I then tried to install my graphics card drivers manually via this article How do I install the latest Nvidia drivers via the Additional Drivers tool?. I rebooted and had no issue although I tried to go back into the CompizConfig Settings Manager and couldn't get anything to work as well as my Additional Drivers tool still showed no drivers installed. I feel like I've tried about everything I can think of and any help would be much appreciated!

  Ubuntu 12.04. The first time I log into Gnome Classic I get a duplicate of every menu, panel indicator and taskbar entry. If I log out and back in again I now have three copies. Log out and log in, four copies and so forth. What would cause this?   Background: 3 of 9 Barcode Alphabet A simple syntax for 3 of 9 bar codes What is the formula behind the alphabet and digits in a 3 of 9 bar code? For example, ASCII has a relatively clear arrangement. Numbers start at 33, capitals at 65, lowercase at 97. From these starting points you can infer the ASCII code for any number or letter. The start point for each range is also a multiple of 32 + 1. Bar codes seem random and lacking sequence. If we use the syntax from the second link, this is the first six characters in 3 of 9: A 100-01 B 010-01 C 110-00 D 001-01 E 101-00 F 011-00 I see no pattern here; what is it? I'm as much interested in the designer's intended pattern behind these as I am in someone devising an algorithm of their own that can give you the above code for a given character based on its sequence. I struggled with where to put this question; is it history, computer science, information science? I chose Programmers because a StackExchange search had the most barcode hits here, and because I wanted to specifically relate it to ASCII to explain what sort of formula/explanation I'm looking for.

• Ubuntu 11.10 won't let me login; it kicks me back to login screen

  I was just copying files from my external HDD to my .wine directory, when I noticed the place where the launchers are (Unity desktop) was getting fuzzy and holding onto graphics from the things in the location prior(i have it autohide when a window covers it). I assumed it was just RAM problem, so I canceled the copying, since it wasn't actually important. The glitch remained, and so did another; very slow response time. The mouse moved just fine, but windows were waiting about a minute after I hit the x button to close or even switch active window. Once again, I blamed RAM (only have 2 GBs) so I restarted. Usually, it autologs me into my account, since I'm the only user, but this time it presented me with the login screen. I thought it odd, but tried to log in. A black screen with some text pops up (assuming terminal screen) for half a second then kicks me back to the login screen. I tried the guest account and no luck. I went into terminal (alt+ctrl+f1) and logged in and it worked. I deleted .Xauthority, made new account, and even rebooted quite a few times, all to no avail. Anyone have an idea?

  I have around 10000+ strings and have to identify and group all the strings which looks similar(I base the similarity on the number of common words between any two give strings). The more number of common words, more similar the strings would be. For instance: How to make another layer from an existing layer Unable to edit data on the network drive Existing layers in the desktop Assistance with network drive In this case, the strings 1 and 3 are similar with common words Existing, Layer and 2 and 4 are similar with common words Network Drive(eliminating stop word) The steps I'm following are: Iterate through the data set Do a row by row comparison Find the common words between the strings Form a cluster where number of common words is greater than or equal to 2(eliminating stop words) If number of common words<2, put the string in a new cluster. Assign the rows either to the existing clusters or form a new one depending upon the common words Continue until all the strings are processed I am implementing the project in C#, and have got till step 3. However, I'm not sure how to proceed with the clustering. I have researched a lot about string clustering but could not find any solution that fits my problem.   Can I build a multi-threaded system that handles events from a game and sorts them, independently, into different threads based on priority, and is it a good idea? Here's more info: I am about to begin work on porting a mid-sized game from Flash/AS3 to Java so that I can continue development with multi-threading capabilities. Here's a small bit of background about the game: The game contains numerous asynchronous activities, such as "world updating" (the game environment is constantly changing based on a set of natural laws and forces), procedural generation of terrain, NPCs, quests, items, etc., and on top of that, the effects of all of the player's interactions with his environment are programmatically calculated in real time, based on a set of constantly changing "stats" and once again, natural laws and forces. All of these things going on at once, in an asynchronous manner, seem to lend themselves to multi-threading very well. My question is: Can I build some kind of central engine that handles the "stacking" of all of these events as they are triggered, and dynamically sorts them out amongst the available threads, and would it be a good idea? As an example: Essentially, every time something happens (IE, a magic missile being generated by a spell, or a bunch of plants need to grow to their next stage), instead of just processing that task right then and adding the new object(s) to a list of managed objects, send a reference to that event to a core "event handler" that throws it into a stack of all other currently queued events, which then sorts them out and orders them according to urgency, splits them between a number of available threads for as-fast-as-possible multithreaded execution.

• What technologies are needed to be a freelance web developer / designer targeting small businesses?

  First off, I'm not looking for this answer: "learn PHP/MySQL, JQuery, HTML/CSS...." My background, I wear many hats, and do many things. Currently I manage investment accounts with a business partner who is also a friend. He happens to be attending business / law school perusing a joint JD and MBA. As a result, we're putting our into "coast", maintaining our current clients, but not acquiring more. Recently I've picked up some freelance graphic design / web development / online marketing side work (Photoshop, HTML/CSS, WordPress) through some personal networks. The work is enjoyable; now I'm thinking about expanding it into a larger business with these primary goals: augment my finances (I'm shooting for about $1,000-2,000 per mo.), learn new technologies, involve myself with meaningful work. As an entrepreneur I don't mind the aspects of running a business that hassle other freelancers... -- the marketing -- the billing -- etc. I'm considering targeting the small to middle market businesses and organizations where I can contribute in marketing, design, and development building projects from the ground up. Thus I'll have freedom to decide the specific technology (I won't have to work with an existing code base). What kinds of projects should I focus on? What technologies are a good fit for this style of work? For example: It might be fun to develop with Ruby on Rails. However, maybe a lot of projects would be rolling out e-commerce solutions. Thus, I should focus on PHP due to more shopping cart options, skipping ROR entirely.

  To cut to the chase... I look at Twitter's usage policy and see limitations on what can and can't be done with their logo. I also see examples of websites that use icons that have been integrated with the look and feel of their own site. Given Twitter's policy, for example, it would appear that legal conversations/agreements would need to take place to do this, especially on a commercial site. I believe it is perfectly acceptable to have a plain text button that simply has the word "Tweet" on it, that has the same functionality. My question is if anyone can provide online (or other) references that attempt to summarize what can and can't be done when integrating various social networks into your own work? The answer I will mark as the correct one will be the one which provides the best resource(s) giving the best summaries of what can and can't be done with specific logos/icons, with a secondary factor being that a variety of social networking sites are addressed in your answer. Before people point to specific questions, I am looking for a well-rounded approach that considers a breadth of networks and considerations. Background: I would like to incorporate social media icons and functionality, but would like to consider what type of modifications can be done without needing to involve lawyers. For example, can I bring in a standard Facebook logo, but incorporate my site color into the logo? Would the answer differ if I maintained their color, but add in a few pixels of another color to transition? I am not saying I want to do this, but rather using it as an example.

They wanted to have e-mail links on their pages, so, to try and keep those e-mail addresses from ending up on too many spam lists, instead of using direct mailto: links I made those links point to a simple redirector / address harvester trap script running on my own site. This script would return either a 301 redirect to the actual mailto: URL, or, if it detected a suspicious access pattern, a page containing lots of random fake e-mail addresses and links to more such pages. To keep legitimate search bots away from the trap, I set up the robots.txt rule shown above, disallowing the entire space of both legit redirector links and trap pages. Just recently, however, one of the people in the club searched Google for their own name and was quite surprised when one of the results on the first page was a link to the redirector script, with a title consisting of their e-mail address followed by my name. Of course, they immediately e-mailed me and wanted to know how to get their address out of Google's index. I was quite surprised too, since I had no idea that Google would index such URLs at all, seemingly in violation of my robots.txt rule. I did manage to submit a removal request to Google, and it seems to have worked, but I'd like to know why and how Google is circumventing my robots.txt like that and how to make sure that none of the disallowed pages will show up in their search results. Ps. I actually found out a possible explanation and solution, which I'll post below, while preparing this question, but I thought I'd ask it anyway in case someone else might have the same problem. Please do feel free to post your own answers. I'd also be interested in knowing if other search engines do this too, and whether the same solutions work for them also.

• How can my team avoid frequent errors after refactoring?

  to give you a little background: I work for a company with roughly twelve Ruby on Rails developers (+/- interns). Remote work is common. Our product is made out of two parts: a rather fat core, and thin up to big customer projects built upon it. Customer projects usually expand the core. Overwriting of key features does not happen. I might add that the core has some rather bad parts that are in urgent need of refactorings. There are specs, but mostly for the customer projects. The worst part of the core are untested (as it should be...). The developers are split into two teams, working with one or two PO for each sprint. Usually, one customer project is strictly associated with one of the teams and POs. Now our problem: Rather frequently, we break each others stuff. Some one from Team A expands or refactors the core feature Y, causing unexpected errors for one of Team B's customer projects. Mostly, the changes are not announced over the teams, so the bugs hit almost always unexpected. Team B, including the PO, thought about feature Y to be stable and did not test it before releasing, unaware of the changes. How to get rid of those problems? What kind of 'announcement technique' can you recommend me?

• Learning curve for web development

  At the moment our team has a huge challenge, we're being asked to deliver a new GUI for an embedded controller. The deadline is very tight and is set on April 2013. Our team is very diverse, some people are on the level of functional programming (mostly C), others (including myself) have mastered object oriented programming (C++, C#). We built a prototype for Android, although it has its quirks, it is mostly just OO. For the future there is a wish to support multiple platforms (Windows, Android, iOS). In my opinion a HTML5 app with a native app shell is the way to go. When gathering more information on the frameworks to use etc., it became obvious to me a paradigm shift is needed. None of us have a web background so we need to learn from the ground up. The shift from functional to OO took us about 6 months to become productive (and some of the early subsystems were rewritten because they were a total mess). Can we expect the learning curve to be similar? Can this be pulled off with a web app? (My feeling says it will already be hard to pull off as a native app which is at the edge of our comfort zone).

• Computer Science graduate. Master or full-time job? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is a Master's worth it? I have just gotten my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and I have to make choice. Whether to continue with my full-time job I just got or put the job slightly in the background and concentrate on getting a Master's degree. I am currently working as an embedded C developer in a small company. The cool thing is that, because the team is quite small, my engineering ideas really play a part in the final product. Not to mention that I get to work on very different areas of embedded programming: device drivers and development of a Real Time OS. I am very enthusiastic about my job and what I do. On the other hand, in my country there isn't really a master's degree that focuses on embedded development so my gain from getting this degree will mainly in the field of general computer science knowledge. That being said, is it worth giving up all my spare time which I now use to study different areas of embedded devices and work mainly to get a degree rather than pure knowledge and experience in the field I want to work in?
