• Installing all the bits to demo Entity Framework 4 on the Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate

  Next week (17th March 2010) I am presenting on EF4 at www.devweek.com in London (and Azure on the 18th). Today I wanted to get all the latest bits on my demo machine and also check if there are any cool new resources I can point people at. Whilst most of the new improvements in Entity Framework come with the Visual Studio 2010 RC (and the RTM), there are a couple of separate items you need to install if you want to explore all the features. To demo EF4 you need: Visual Studio 2010 RC Download and install the Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate. In my case I went from the Ultimate Edition but it will work fine on Premium and Professional. POCO Templates See the team blog post for a detailed explanation. Use the Extension Manager inside Visual Studio 2010: And install the updated POCO templates for either C# or VB (or both if you are so inclined!): Code First Next you will also need to install Code First (formally called Code Only). This is part of the Entity Framework Feature CTP 3. See the team blog post for a detailed explanation. Download the CTP from Microsoft downloads and run the setup.   I'm currently porting a game written in C# with XNA library to Android with Monogame. I have read the documentation and installed the modules, but I am unsure how I have to configure the proxy's according to http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/library/ee126142(en-us,WS.10).aspx - as a proxy or reverse proxy and how I minimize the bandwidth needs between origin server and proxy's. What is the best way to realize my setup? Any short how-tos? How can I announce all players to use the proxy? Route all rtsp/mms/http-requests through my proxy? Announce the proxy with DHCP-releases? • Execute a SSIS package in Sync or Async mode from SQL Server 2012

  Today I had to schedule a package stored in the shiny new SSIS Catalog store that can be enabled with SQL Server 2012. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh479588(v=SQL.110).aspx) Once your packages are stored here, they will be executed using the new stored procedures created for this purpose. This is the script that will get executed if you try to execute your packages right from management studio or through a SQL Server Agent job, will be similar to the following: Declare @execution_id bigint EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name='my_package.dtsx', @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=N'BI', @project_name=N'DWH', @use32bitruntime=False, @reference_id=Null Select @execution_id DECLARE @var0 smallint = 1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'LOGGING_LEVEL', @parameter_value=@var0 DECLARE @var1 bit = 0 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'DUMP_ON_ERROR', @parameter_value=@var1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id GO The problem here is that the procedure will simply start the execution of the package and will return as soon as the package as been started…thus giving you the opportunity to execute packages asynchrously from your T-SQL code. This is just *great*, but what happens if I what to execute a package and WAIT for it to finish (and thus having a synchronous execution of it)? You have to be sure that you add the “SYNCHRONIZED” parameter to the package execution. Before the start_execution procedure: exec [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'SYNCHRONIZED', @parameter_value=1 And that’s it . PS From the RC0, the SYNCHRONIZED parameter is automatically added each time you schedule a package execution through the SQL Server Agent. If you’re using an external scheduler, just keep this post in mind .

• Troubles with MSVC++ redistributable

  A friend of mine is trying to install AutoCAD. In the install log it is written Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x86) Failed Installation aborted, Result=1603 I've found a site which (hopefully) explains how to solve this: here However, my friend has not been able to uninstall the redistributables. The error message says The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable I've already suggested running this but that didn't help much. Only some of the redistributables could be uninstalled. What can be done? Do you think running some other cleanup tool could work? Or will we have to uninstall manually (how exactly would we do that)?

• bluetooth doesn't turn off during sleep in Windows 7

  I have a Bluetooth USB dongle on a Windows 7 laptop. I did not install any Bluetooth drivers, so I assume that the device is using the Microsoft stack. When the computer goes to sleep, the Bluetooth adapter stays on. I don't want Bluetooth devices to wake the computer, so I want sleep to turn off the dongle, but I can't find power management options for Bluetooth in the Control Panel and Device Manager. I also have an issue where the computer doesn't reach full sleep mode, I'm hoping that turning Bluetooth off will solve that problem, too. How can I turn off Bluetooth during sleep?

Obviously this message doesn't help much, but what does all the hexadecimal mean? Will it help me track down the problem? Any pointers as to where to look?

• .NET Demon support for VS 11 dark theme

  I'm pleased to announce that .NET Demon will be shipping simultaneously with Visual Studio 11, whenever it ends up being released. That means we're going to make sure that a version of .NET Demon is released very near to the Visual Studio 11 final release which supports the new version of VS fully. The interesting part of this support is going to be the new dark theme of VS, which I'm looking forward to using. I'm told dark colours reduce eye strain for developers. It's important that extensions like .NET Demon switch to a dark theme when the rest of the IDE changes, or the dark theme will look silly. Unfortunately, none of my favourite extensions look right in the dark theme yet, so even though I use Visual Studio 11 beta for my day-to-day development already, I can't use the dark theme. Luckily .NET Demon uses WPF throughout, and the team at Microsoft are helping us to use the WPF Style system to make it easy for me to implement the support without having to add colour attributes to all the controls manually. We should have dark theme support in .NET Demon in the next month or so.

• Ubuntu...I love you, I hate you

   I have been working on seeing if a .NET 3.5 application will port over to Linux, Ubuntu to be specific. I started with version 9.01, then 9.10 and now 10.04 as I find more and more that I need from Mono. I have a dual boot on a dev box, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. An upgrade from Ubuntu 9.01 to 9.10 caused my mouse and keyboard to lock up. I was able to boot from a 9.10 cd. Then, I upgraded to 10.04 as I needed Mono 2,2. Upgrade worked, lost my windows boot though. it seems grub somehow jumped in and messed up the windows boot. After Googlign liek crazy and trying this and that, these 2 links finally got me my windows boot back:http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392So, I am now thinking about trying SuSe instead as I hear\read it's more stable.   We have a Terminal server and want to prevent users from running inappropriate software. Previously we used Software Restriction Policies for this purpose. Now, Microsoft seems to recommend Applocker instead. However we found no possibilities to add custom extensions like JAR, CPL, MSC etc. which was possible in Software Restriction Policies. Do you know how to add custom extensions to the Applocker policies in Windows 2008? Or how can we block custom script interpreters like Perl etc.?

• Accessing SQL Server in Windows XP Mode Virtual Pc

  I have a laptop running 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I created a Virtual PC using Microsoft XP Mode. I've installed SQL Server 2000 on the Virtual Machine. I have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the Windows 7 machine (laptop). I can browse to the SQL 2000 instance (it sees it), but I cannot successfully connect using either Windows or SQL Server Authentication. I don't get an error, the attempt just times out. I have the Windows XP Mode Firewall turned off, and there doesn't appear to be anything in the Event logs either. Any ideas how I can query the XP Mode SQL Server from the Windows 7 machine?

• ADFS 2.0 Farm - How do I perform an immediate sync

  Hi, We're using ADFS 2.0 on a windows 2008 server, it's in a farm and has the default polling interval of 5 minutes. We're making a change tonight and would rather sync immediately than wait for the other guy to update, especially as we might be making multiple changes. This Technet article mentions that I can change the polling interval or do an immediate sync between my servers: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee913581%28WS.10%29.aspx I checked the powershell commandlets for ADFS and I can only seem to find one that let's me set the polling interval, but not perform a 1 time immediate sync Searched the usual suspects, but just can't find a ADFS-SyncMyStuffNow command... • Is there an offline HTML editor for writers?

  All of our writers and editors use Microsoft Word for document creation and a lot of what they create ends up on the Web. Is there a good offline editor with a flavor similar to Word that they could use to create their documents. Styling of the content should not be a concern, only producing semantic HTML (most documents they create could be done using only header and paragraph tags for instance). They have tried CKEditor and TinyMCE but it is still too foreign for them and it is online so they don't trust it not to lose their work.

• Email client supporting multiple accounts

  I've been using Microsoft Outlook for a very long time, although one thing that has bugged me is how multiple email accounts are handled. As far as I can tell, there isn't a set and straightforward way of managing multiple accounts in one instance of outlook. For example, when I create an email, saving it as a draft will by default dump it into the first personal folder that I have open, which in my current case, is not where I want it. I would like all trash, spam, drafts, contacts, etc. etc. to be handled on a PF by PF basis. Now to my question: Is there a way to accomplish the task of email account "segregation" in Outlook (2007 is my current version), or is there another client that handles this in a more organized fashion? Note: I don't use most of the features in outlook (I hardly even need special formatting for my messages), I generally just send and read mail, and get a few attachments, so leaving Outlook wouldn't be too much of a stretch for me.

• Server 2003 - Default installation of SharePoint throws javascript error 'undefined' is null or not an object

  I have been handed a server that has a fresh installation of small business server 2003. SharePoint has been installed, and it is a completely fresh copy (no changes made) I know for a fact that everything was paid for so this isn't some dodgy copy. When I try to click any option in any of the floating menu's in IE 8, the browser asks me if I want to debug .. Error: 'undefined' is null or not an object for example, I got to Projects - and click on the sample project, then click delete on the floating menu that pops up and the error appears. This is brand new, I cannot believe I am having this problem! Has anyone come across this, is it an old problem with easy fix? All windows updates installed - see no updates for sharepoint? • Another installation is in progress

  Why I try to install any program I see "Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one." error. Googled the web and found that solution would be to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress registry key and reboot. That didn't help me unfortunately. When I open "Services" mmc snapin it shows that "Windows Installer" service is "Started", but "Start/Stop/Pause/Restart" buttons are grayed (the interesting thing is that startup type = "Manual", so I don't really know how to explain that I already have 2 instances of msiexec.exe in memory and one instance is consuming 50Mb of memory. Looks like there's a serious issue with my installer service - is there any way to fix it (please do mind - I can't install anything!) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Brain Eaters app is a sample app from my soon to be released book Windows 8 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript. The game illustrates several important programming concepts which you need when building Windows 8 games with JavaScript such as using HTML5 Canvas and the new requestAnimationFrame() method. If you are looking for Halo or Call of Duty then you will be disappointed. If you are looking for PAC-MAN then you will be disappointed. I created the simplest arcade game that I could imagine so I could explain it in the book. All of the code for the game is included with the book. The goal of the game is to eat the food pellets while avoiding the zombies while running around a maze. Every time you get eaten by a zombie, you can hear my six year old son saying “Oh No!”. • Reflecting on 2010 and Looking into 2011

  In early 2010, I had blogged and shared my excitement as I was about to embark on a new journey relocating to South Florida.     As I settled down and adjusted to my new life, I was presented with an opportunity to get actively involved and volunteer in the local Florida .Net and Project Management communities.  I have since devoted a significant portion of my time to community initiatives, coordinating the West Palm Beach .Net User Group, volunteering as a member of the INETA Speaker’s Bureau and traveling to attend/speak at .Net code camps and user groups throughout the states of Florida and New York. I have also taken on various volunteer roles at the South Florida Chapter of the Project Management Institute starting as core team member on the chapter’s mentoring initiative and ending the year as Project Manager of the chapter’s mentoring program and as Director of Electronic Communications on the chapter’s IT team. I am also serving a one year term (2010-2011) as secretary and founding board member of Florida’s first official chapter of the International Association for Software Architects (IASA).   A big thank you is due for those who afforded me the opportunity and privilege to take part of these initiatives and those who provided guidance and encouragement when I needed them the most.   Looking ahead into 2011, I hope to continue my community involvement and volunteer activities. I will start by dedicating the first 5 weekends in the New Year to teach a free comprehensive Microsoft PowerPoint class at church. My goal will be to start from scratch and slowly cover the various available PowerPoint features that can be leveraged to create captivating presentations. • Bulk "open with" change on OS X 10.6

  I use Microsoft remote desktop to connect from my mac to the windows machine I work on. I have a directory with about 50 different rdp files. (The config files for each machine). They go changed to open with the remote desktop in Windows XP on Parallels. Is there a command I can use to change all those back to opening with the remote desktop on my Mac? I can use the right mouse click "Always open with" command, or the equivalent on the "Get Info" menu, but I would like to find a way to make that change in bulk. "Change All..." button on the "Get Info" menu does not have any effect.
