• Testing complex entities

  I've got a C# form, with various controls on it. The form controls an ongoing process, and there are many, many aspects that need to be right for the program to run correctly. Each part can be unit tested (for instance, loading some coefficients, drawing some diagnostics) but I often run into problems that are best described with an example: "If I click here, then here, then change this, then re-open the form, then click here, it crashes or produces an error" I've tried my best to use common code organisational ideas (inheritance, DRY, separation of concerns) but there never seems to be a way to test every single path, and inevitably, a form with several controls will have a huge number of ways to execute. What can I read (preferably online) that addresses this kind of issue, and is there a (non-generic) term for it. This isn't a specific problem I'm having, but one that creeps up on me, especially with WinForms.

  Wikipedia: An esoteric programming language (sometimes shortened to esolang) is a programming language designed as a test of the boundaries of computer programming language design, as a proof of concept, or as a joke. There is usually no intention of the language being adopted for real-world programming. Such languages are often popular among hackers and hobbyists. This use of esoteric is meant to distinguish these languages from more popular programming languages. Some more popular languages may appear esoteric (in the usual sense of the word) to some, and though these could arguably be called "esoteric programming languages" too, this is not what is meant. I think it might be worth it, just to learn a new language and go through the process, although only if you don't have anything else to do (like a real project or learning a new real language). But what does the community think? Is there some value in these languages?

  hi, I have a request to load a swf file, flaMovie.swf from rails. The swf file is located the directory /home/user1/railsproj/flash. • Rotation towards an object in 3d space

  hello, i have two coordinates on a 2d plane in 3d space, and am trying to rotate one coordinate (a vector) to face the other coordinate. my vertical axis is the y-axis, so if both of the coordinates are located flat on the 2d plane, they would both have a y-axis of 0, and their x and z coordinates determine their position length/width-wise on the plane. right now, i'm calculating the angle like so (language agnostic): angle = atan2(z2-z1,x2-x1); and am rotating/translating in space like so: pushMatrix(); rotateY(angle); popMatrix(); this doesn't seem to be working though. are my calculations/process correct?

• Linking to libcrypto for Leopard?

  Hi I am using Mac OS X 10.6 SDK and my deployment target is set to Mac OS 10.5. I'm linking to libcrypto (AquaticPrime requires this) and found out that my app doesn't launch on Leopard. The error is dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libcrypto.0.9.8.dylib I've tried the following workarounds but none of them work: Linking directly to libcrypto.0.9.7.dylib (the 10.6 SDK refuses to link directly with libcrypto.0.9.7.dylib. Copying the 10.5 SDK's version of libcrypto.0.9.7.dylib to the 10.6 lib directory and try t link with it (this time the link process succeeded but in Leopard the app still tries to lookup the non-existent libcrypto.0.9.8.dylib file and thus won't launch). Copying libcrypto.0.9.7.dylib from a Mac OS X 10.5.8 installation and link with it (the link was successful but the app still looks for libcrypto.0.9.8.dylib). Is there a way to link to this library and still use the 10.6 SDK? Thanks.

  I'm trying to make a web app that will manage my Mercurial repositories for me. I want it so that when I tell it to load repository X: Connect to a MySQL server and make sure X exists. Check if the user is allowed to access the repository. If above is true, get the location of X from a mysql server. Run a hgweb cgi script (python) containing the path of the repository. Here is the problem, I want to: take the hgweb script, modify it, and run it. But I do not want to: take the hgweb script, modify it, write it to a file and redirect there. I am using Apache to run the httpd process.

• Source control on internet i.e. no private networks.

  Me and my friend are in the process of starting a small project and want to implement a source control. Now both are located in different cities and can communicate using internet for file sharing etc. I need an online hosting solution or any way where i can maintain the source code repository for both of us to check in/out. As of now we want to maintain it as private project. Does sourceforge allow hosting projects which would not be opensource? One option i was thinking, to obtain a static IP form ISP and host the repository.But that mean my system needs to be online when my friend wants to checkin/out or do some diff with old version code. Secondly, would SVN or git be a better choice in such a situation. I have no experience in git/mercurial as of now.

  So I'm beginning to wonder how leaky the gnome2 libraries for ruby1.8.6 are. #!/usr/bin/env ruby require 'gtk2' while true sleep 0.1 pixbuf = Gdk::PixbufLoader.new pixbuf = nil end this leaks about 16kb/sec according to watch -n 1 ps -o rss -p <process id> This is compounded if you start trying to write a chunk of large chunks of image data to it using pixbuf.last_write img_data Any ideas how to get around this (and the second issue)? I need to update image data within my code but it seems like anything that ends up using a pixbuf leaks like a sieve.

• Why is QProcess converting the '=' in my arguments to spaces

  I've run into a weird error with a Qt program running on Windows. The program uses QProcess to spawn a child process wit two arguments. The program and arguments passed to the QProcess::start() method are of the form: "batchfile.bat" "--option1=some_value" "--option2=some_other_value\with_a\path" For some reason by the time those options get to the batchfile for processing the equals signs have been converted to spaces and it now looks like: "batchfile.bat" "--option1 some_value" "--option2 some_other_value\with_a\path" because of this, the processing fails. Any ideas what could be causing the equal signs to be replaced by spaces? I'm using the mingw build of the QT 4.6.3 framework found on the Qt download page.

  This may be a really dumb question but I figure why not... I am using RIA Services with Entity Framework as the back end. I have some places in my app where I accept user input and directly ask RIA Services (and in turn EF and in turn my database) questions using their data. Do any of these layers help prevent security issues or should I scrub my data myself? For example, whenever a new user registers with the app, I call this method: [Query] public IEnumerable<EmailVerificationResult> VerifyUserWithEmailToken(string token) { using (UserService userService = new UserService()) { // token came straight from the user, am I in trouble here passing it directly into // my DomainService, should I verify the data here (or in UserService)? • Hard to append a table with many records into another without generating duplicates

  I may seem to be a bit wordy at first but for the hope it will be easier for all of you to understand what I am doing in the first place. I have an uncommon but enjoyable activity of collecting as many species of wood from around the world as I can (over 2,900 so far). Ok, that is the real world. Meanwhile I have spent over 8 years compiling over 5.8 meg of text data on all the woods of the world. That got so large that learning some basic PHP and MySQL was most welcome so I could build a new database driven home for all this research. I am still slow at it but getting there. The original premise was to find evidence of as many species of woods in the world I can. The more names identified, the more successful the project. I have named the project TAXA for ease of conversation (short for Taxonomy). You are most welcome to take a look at what I have so far at www.prowebcanada.com/taxa. It is 95% dynamically driven. So far I am reporting about 6,500 botanical wood names and, as said above, the more I can report, the more successful is the project. I have a file of all the woods in the second largest wood collection in the world, the Tervuren wood collection in the Netherlands with over 11,300 wood names even after cleaning out all duplicates. That is almost twice the number I am reporting now so porting all the new wood names from Tervuren to the 'species' table where I keep the reported data would be a major desirable advancement in the project. At one point I was able to add all the Tervuren records to the species table but over 3,000 duplicates also formed. They were not in the Tervuren file in the first place but represent the same wood names common to both files. It is common sense that there would be woods common to both that when merged would create new duplicates. At one point and with the help of others from another forum, I may very well have finally got the proper SQL statement. When I ran it, though, the system said (semi-amusingly at first) ----- that it had gone away! After looking up on the Net what could have have done this, one reason is that the MySQL timeout lapses and probably because of the large size of files I am running. I am running this on a rented account on Godaddy so I cannot go about trying to adjust any config file. For safety, I copied the tervuren.sql file as tervuren_target.sql and the species.sql file as species_master.sql tp use as working files just to make sure I protect the original files from destruction or damage. Later I can name the species_master back to just species.sql once I am happy all worked well. The species file has about 18 columns in it but only 5 columns match the columns in the Tervuren file (name for name and collation also). The rest of the columns are just along for the ride, so to speak. The common key in both is the 'species_name" columns in both. I am not sure it is at all proper to call one a primary key and the other a foreign key since there really is no relational connection to them. One is just more data for the other and can disappear after, never to be referred to the working code in the application. I have been very surprised and flabbergasted on how hard it can be to append records from one large table into another (with same column names plus others) without generating NEW duplicates in the first place. Watch out thinking that a SELECT DISTINCT statement may do the job because absolutely NO records in the species table must get destroyed in the process and there is no way (well, that I know of) to tell the 'DISTINCT" command this. Yes, the original 'species' table has duplicates in it even before all this but, trust me ---- they have to be removed the long hard way manually record by record or I will lose precious information. It is more important to just make sure no NEW duplicates form through bringing in new names in the tervuren_target.species_name into species.species_name. I am hoping and thinking that a straight SQL solution should work --- except for that nasty timeout. How do I get past that? Could it mean that I may have to turn to a PHP plus SQL method?? Or ..... would I have to break up the Tervuren files into a few smaller ones and run them independently (hope not....)" So far, what seems should be easy has proven to be unexpectedly tricky. I appreciate any help you can give but start from the assumption that this may be harder to do right than it may seem on the surface. By the way --- I am running a quad 64 bit system with Windows 7, so at least I have some fairly hefty power on the client end. I have a direct ethernet cable feeding a cable connection to the Internet. Once I get an algorithm and code working for this, I also have many other lists to process that could make the 'species' table grow even more. It could be equivalent to (ahem) lighting a rocket under my project (especially compared to do this record by record manually)! This is my first time in this forum, so I do not know how I can receive any replies. Do I have to to come back here periodically or are replies emailed out also? I am running Visual Studio 2008 and the query is being sent to a local instance of SqlServer 2008. If I run the query itself in SqlServer, I do get information.   I have a set of values that I'm pushing into an array in the order they occur $valsArray = array(); //I process each value from a file (code removed for simplicity) //and then add into the array $valsArray[] = $val; How do I turn this into an associative array instead where the value gets inserted (as $key of associative array) only if it doesn't exist. If it does exist increment its count ($value of associative array) by 1. I'm trying to find a more efficient way of handling those values compared to what I'm doing now.

Will this process stay running/runnable on the CPU or will it get taken off the CPU and be notified to wake up and run again when there is IO to be read? If it stays on the CPU, what can be done to make it get off and be notified later?

• Drupal Views pulling Data Fields

  I'm a little new to drupal but have been using things like devel module and theme developer to speed up the learning process. My question, is it possible to theme an entire views BLOCK from a single views tpl.php page OR even a preprocess? When I'm grabbing the $view object I can see results $node-result, it has all of the results, but it doesn't have all my views fields. I'm missing things like, node path, taxonomy titles and paths, etc. From my understanding, Drupal wants you to individually theme EACH output field. It seems rather superfluous to create so many extra templates when I've already got over HALF of my results coming through the $view object Would outputting node over field make this easier? • Problem making ant compile my classes present in different Eclipse projects into single destination

  I have close to about 20 projects in my Eclipse workspace. They are interdependent. Now I want to build all of them in a single war file. The thing is eclipse does it nicely... if I create a Dynamic Web Project and link sources of all the 20 projects. But I want to automate the entire process and want to be able to run a script (ant maybe..) and deploy a war in my app server. My approach: I started with a simple approach. I tried to sequentially build each project (javac task) with destination directory as web-inf of my war. But it is giving me weird errors like : package " ** " not found,when it shows the same all the required classes in classpath (I used verbose) Do you think, a continous integration engine will be better for my case (20 projects..) I saw Team City, but didnt get it the first time...

• jQuery fadeIn IE Png Issue when loading from external

  I am loading data from external html files within my domain into a div on my webpage using a load content method in jQuery. I take the div out of the new page whilst hiding the div in the current page by fading this out and fading the new one in. There is a png image in both of these divs and it is creating horrid black blobs in IE, works fine in other browsers but due to IEs inability to process multiple filters its making a mess. I tried using the unit png fix to no avail, does anyone have any fixes or ideas to help keep my pngs looking nice during this transition? i46.tinypic.com/t9dtvr.jpg this is a screenshot of the problem, cheers also discovered that the png that is on the page originaly (before loading anything new) fades in and out perfectly using the unit png fix but stuff loading in and then back out from external files doesnt. Ive added the fix to those pages too but that doesnt work either.

• How can I compile a Perl script inside a running Perl session?

  I have a Perl script that takes user input and creates another script that will be run at a later date. I'm currently going through and writing tests for these scripts and one of the tests that I would like to perform is checking if the generated script compiles successfully (e.g. perl -c <script>.) Is there a way that I can have Perl perform a compile on the generated script without having to spawn another Perl process? I've tried searching for answers, but searches just turn up information about compiling Perl scripts into executable programs.

• Did I find a bug in PHP's `crypt()`?

  I think I may have found a bug in PHP's crypt() function under Windows. However: I recognize that it's probably my fault. PHP is used by millions and worked on by thousands; my code is used by tens and worked on by me. (This argument is best explained on Coding Horror.) So I'm asking for help: show me my fault. I've been trying to find it for a few days now, with no luck. The setup I'm using a Windows server installation with Apache 2.2.14 (Win32) and PHP 5.3.2. My development box runs Windows XP Professional; the 'production' server (this is an intranet setup) runs Windows Storage Server 2003. The problem happens on both. I don't see anything in php.ini related to crypt(), but will happily answer questions about my config. The problem Several scripts in my PHP app occasionally hang: the page sits there on 'waiting for localhost' and never finishes. Each of these scripts uses crypt to hash a user's password before storing it in the database, or, in the case of the login page, to hash the entered password before comparing it to the version stored in the database. Since the login page is the simplest, I focused on it for testing. I repeatedly logged in, and found that it would hang maybe 4 out of 10 times. As an experiment, I changed the login page to use the plain text password and changed my password in the database to its plain text version. The page stopped hanging. I saw that PHP's latest version lists this bugfix: Fixed bug #51059 (crypt crashes when invalid salt are [sic] given). So I created a very simple test script, as follows, using the same salt given in an official example: $foo = crypt('rasmuslerdorf','r1'); echo $foo; This page, too, will hang, if I reload it like crazy. I only see it hanging in Chrome, but regardless of browser, the effect on Apache is the same. Effect on Apache When these pages hang, Apache's server-status page (which I explained here, regarding a different problem) increments the number of requests being processed and decrements the number of idle workers. The requests being processed almost all have a status of 'Sending Reply,' though sometimes for a moment they will show either 'Reading request' or 'keepalive (read).' Eventually, Apache may crash. When it does, the Windows crash report looks like this: szAppName: httpd.exe szAppVer: 2.2.14.0 szModName: php5ts.dll szModVer: 5.3.1.0 // OK, this report was before I upgraded to PHP 5.3.2, // but that didn't fix it offset: 00a2615 Is it my fault? I'm tempted to file a bug report to PHP on this. The argument against it is, as stated above, that bugs are nearly always my fault. However, my argument in favor of 'it's PHP's fault' is: I'm using Windows, whereas most servers use Linux (I don't get to choose this), so the chances are greater that I've found an edge case There was recently a bug with crypt(), so maybe it still has issues I have made the simplest test case I can, and I still have the problem Can anyone duplicate this? Can you suggest where I've gone wrong? Should I file the bug after all? Thanks in advance for any help you may give.

• How to trace a raw (character) device stream on Unix ?

  I'm trying to trace what is transiting in a raw (character) device on an Unix system (ex: /dev/tty.baseband) for DEBUG purpose. I am thinking of creating a deamon that would: upon start rename /dev/tty.baseband to /dev/tty.baseband.old. create a raw node /dev/tty.baseband spawn two threads: Thread 1: reading /dev/tty.baseband.old writing into /dev/tty.baseband Thread 2: reading /dev/tty.baseband writing into /dev/tty.baseband.old This would work a little bit like a MITM process. I wonder if there is not a 'standard' way to do this.

However, I receive the error message System.Index.OutOfRangeException: Cannot find column 1 which occurs on the line drSelParts(i) = row.Cells(i).Text.
