• NullPointerException with CallableStatement.getResultSet()

  Hello, I have a stored proc in SQL Server 2005, which looks like the following (simplified) CREATE PROCEDURE FOO @PARAMS AS BEGIN -- STEP 1: POPULATE tmp_table DECLARE @tmp_table TABLE (...) INSERT INTO @tmp_table SELECT * FROM BAR -- STEP 2: USE @tmp_table FOR FINAL SELECT SELECT abc, pqr FROM BAZ JOIN @tmp_table ON some_criteria END When I run this proc from SQL Server Management Studio, things work fine. However, when I call the same proc from a Java program, using something like: cs = connection.prepareCall("exec proc ?,"); cs.setParam(...); rs = cs.getResultSet(); // BOOM - Null! while(rs.next()) {...} // NPE! I fail to understand why the first result set returned is NULL. Can someone explain this to me? As a workaround, if I check cs.getMoreResults() and if true, try another getResultSet() - THIS time it returns the proper result set. Any pointers please? Don't really know where to go from here, appreciate any advice . . .

• iPad UIViewController loads as portrait when device is in landscape

  I have an application with 3 view controllers. They are all have shouldAutoRotateToInterfaceOrientation returning YES. The first two, my main menu and my submenu both autorotate just fine. The third viewcontroller, which programatically loads a UIImageView from a jpg file in the program's bundle, will only display in portrait. In the viewcontroller containing the image, i have this: NSString *imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@-00%d.jpg",setPrefix,imageNumber]; UIImageView *pictureView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:imageName]]; pictureView.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 1024, 768); [self.view addSubview:pictureView]; and again, I have shouldAutoRotateToInterfaceOrientation returning YES for all orientations. My image shows up, but is sideways, and the 0,0,1024,768 values I used to make my rectangle start from the top right corner going down, instead of starting at the top left and going across (holding in landscape). Am I missing a parameter I need to set in order to ensure the imageview shows up in landscape instead of portrait?

• Are some data structures more suitable for functional programming than others?

  In Real World Haskell, there is a section titled "Life without arrays or hash tables" where the authors suggest that list and trees are preferred in functional programming, whereas an array or a hash table might be used instead in an imperative program. This makes sense, since it's much easier to reuse part of an (immutable) list or tree when creating a new one than to do so with an array. So my questions are: Are there really significantly different usage patterns for data structures between functional and imperative programming? If so, is this a problem? What if you really do need a hash table for some application? Do you simply swallow the extra expense incurred for modifications?

• C++: posix regex error reporting?

  I'm writing a small C++ program that parses some strings. I chose to use C's regex.h because I only need POSIX Extended Syntax and I'm concerned with portability. However, I've just noticed that when regexec fails to match, it returns != 0 and I have no idea of what was wrong :-(. I expected to be able to display at least a small message like: line:col: Syntax error or giig sdoigosdigo* sodfg ^ Syntax error Is there a way to know which character did not match? Should I use boost:regex instead? • Cannot Debug Visual Basic 6 ActiveX Component On 64-bit OS

  Hi, The situation might sound a bit weird but I have to play with what I have. There's a Win2003 64-bit server OS and a legacy application written using Visual Studio 6. The app consists of two parts: ActiveX components written in VB6 and C++ code which uses them. I need to debug the components' code. I installed Visual Studio 6 on the server and I'm able to step into the component's code. Then I got following situation: 1) C++ code works until it needs to instantiate component A. 2) At this step we switch to VB6 and start debugging Component's A. 3) In the very beginning component A creates an instance of a class C exposed by component B. At this step VB6 debugger shows error message with title "OLEDB32.DLL" and following text: "Failed to load resource DLL C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\OLEDB32R.DLL" Additional information: The last step in initialization of the class C is opening an ADO connection to SQL server using OLEDB provider. I'd appreciate any ideas on how resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.

• Using sed for introducing newline after each > in a +1 gigabyte large one-line text file

  I have a giant text file (about 1,5 gigabyte) with xml data in it. All text in the file is on a single line, and attempting to open it in any text editor (even the ones mentioned in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/159521/text-editor-to-open-big-giant-huge-large-text-files ) either fails horribly or is totally unusable due to the text editor hanging when attempting to scroll. I was hoping to introduce newlines into the file by using the following sed command sed 's/>/>\n/g' data.xml > data_with_newlines.xml Sadly, this caused sed to give me a segmentation fault. From what I understand, sed reads the file line-by-line which would in this case mean that it attempts to read the entire 1,5 gig file in one line which would most certainly explain the segfault. However, the problem remains. How do I introduce newlines after each in the xml file? Do I have to resort to writing a small program to do this for me by reading the file character-by-character?

  I program mostly in scala and java, using scalatest in scala and junit for unit testing. I would like to apply the very same tests to several implementations of the same interface/trait. The idea is to verify that the interface contract is enforced and to check Liskov substitution principle. For instance, when testing implementations of lists, tests could include: An instance should be empty, if and only if and only if it has zero size. After calling clear, the size sould be zero. Adding an element in the middle of a list, will increment by one the index of rhs elements. etc. What are the best practices ?

• What is the best option for reading Java property files?

  Hello I have an application which uses a servlet to read an intialization parameter from web.xml for the location of a property file. The serlvet then creates an instance of a class which stores the location of the file for other programs to read as required. This class has appropriate get and set methods. But my question concerns access to the properties: should the physical property file be read by each program as at runtime or should the properties be stored in memory instead? The properties are not currently altered at runtime but this could change? I've seen various alternative approaches but am not sure which is best. Thanks Mr Morgan

• Trying to compile VS2008 project on Win 64 bit which is custom Powershell PSSnapin

  Library Project compiles fine for ANY CPU in VS2008 running on Win 7 64 -bit. Now in the post build following command fails when attemptiong to register library dll: PS C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 .\installutil C:\path\Project.dll Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\path\Project.dll' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.. Do I need to compile the project as x64 I was under impression that AnyCPU will take care of it. Alo my library does have dependencies. Do they also need to be compiled as x64 bit? Any help is appreciated.

• Displaying webcam feed using opencv and python

  Hi ive been trying to create a simple program with python which utilises opencv to get a video feed from my webcam and display it on the screen. I know im partly there because the window is created and the light on my webcam flicks on, but it just doesnt seem to show anything in the window. hopefully someone can explain what im doing wrong. import cv cv.NamedWindow("w1", cv.CV_WINDOW_AUTOSIZE) capture = cv.CaptureFromCAM(0) def repeat(): frame = cv.QueryFrame(capture) cv.ShowImage("w1", frame) while True: repeat() on an unrelated note, i have noticed that my webcam sometimes changes its index number in cv.CaptureFromCAM and sometimes i need to put in 0, 1 or 2 even though i only have one camera connected and i havnt unplugged it (i know because the light doesnt come on unless i change the index). is there a way to get python to determine the correct index? thanks Mitch

  In my ASP.NET MVC application, I have the following setup: <runtime> <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1"> <probing privatePath="bin;extras"/> I have referenced assemblies located in the extras folder in the views and they have worked perfectly (using <%@ Import Namespace="myNameSpace" %>). My questions What happens when that line is called? Where is the assembly loaded? Why is it that I can't overwrite the assembly located in the extras folder that contains myNameSpace with a newer version? (I get an error saying that the assembly is "open" in another program) Is there a way to overwrite the assembly with a newer version without having the application restart?

The Yalumba Wine Company is growing rapidly, and was in need of introducing a more modern standard to the existing manufacturing processes to meet globalization demands, overall time-to-market, and better operational efficiency objectives of product development. The Yalumba Wine Company worked with a partner, Bristlecone to develop a unique solution whereby Oracle Data Integrator is leveraged to pull data from Salesforce.com and JD Edwards, in addition to their other pre-existing source systems, for consumption into their data warehouse. They have emphasized the overall ease of developing integration workflows with Oracle Data Integrator. The solution has brought better visibility for the business users, shorter data loading and transformation performance to their data warehouse with rapid incorporation of new data sources, and a solid future-proof foundation for their organization. Moving forward, they plan on leveraging more from Oracle’s Data Integration portfolio. Terrific! In addition to these two customers on Tuesday we featured many other important Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle GoldenGate customers. On Tuesday the GoldenGate panel included: Land O’Lakes, Smuckers, and Veolia Water. Besides giving us yummy nutrition and healthy water, these companies have another aspect in common. • Editing Mac OS X login items in Objective-C through AppleScript

  In my Cocoa program, I want to examine what programs are registered to run at startup and modify that list as I feel appropriate. In order to be compatible with Tiger it seems like I need to work through AppleScript. I currently have the following code: NSDictionary* errorDict; NSAppleEventDescriptor* returnDescriptor = NULL; NSString *appleSource = @"tell application \"System Events\"\n\ get every login item\n\ end tell"; NSAppleScript *appleScript = [[NSAppleScript alloc] initWithSource: appleSource]; returnDescriptor = [appleScript executeAndReturnError: &errorDict]; If I run that command in AppleScript, I get back an array of login items. However, I can't figure out how to iterate through this array in Objective-C. More specifically, I want to examine the names and paths of the programs registered to run at startup. Any ideas?

• When should assertions stay in production code?

  Hi all, There's a discussion going on over at comp.lang.c++.moderated about whether or not assertions, which in C++ only exist in debug builds by default, should be kept in production code or not. Obviously, each project is unique, so my question here is not so much whether assertions should be kept, but in which cases this is recommendable/not a good idea. By assertion, I mean: A run-time check that tests a condition which, when false, reveals a bug in the software. A mechanism by which the program is halted (maybe after really minimal clean-up work). I'm not necessarily talking about C or C++. My own opinion is that if you're the programmer, but don't own the data (which is the case with most commercial desktop applications), you should keep them on, because a failing asssertion shows a bug, and you should not go on with a bug, with the risk of corrupting the user's data. This forces you to test strongly before you ship, and makes bugs more visible, thus easier to spot and fix. What's your opinion/experience? Cheers, Carl See related question here

  Hi, I am facing problem in implementing Input method for Virtual Keyboard, currently I am using robot class for sending input to any application from virtual keyboard. but for that I need to create mapping of key-code and unicode, which is not consistent on different keyboard layout, can I directly pass the UNICODE to any application using Input method without worry about mapping between keycode and unicode. any useful link or sample code will be useful. It is simple Java program which is always on top of any application and work as onscreen keyboard. using a mouse while you press any button (key) of the keyboard, the corresponding character will be typed in the application running below. This is working perfectly for English Alphabets. I am facing problem while I am doing for unicode.

  I'm trying to write a program that takes the length of my first, middle, and last names individually and then adds the total amount of letters up in the end. My answer keeps on being 666 instead of 18. Here is the code I have written: puts 'What is your first name?' firstName = gets.chomp realFirstName = firstName.length.to_i puts 'What is your middle name?' middleName = gets.chomp realMiddleName = middleName.length.to_i puts 'What is your last name?' lastName = gets.chomp realLastName = lastName.length.to_i puts 'Did you know there are ' + realFirstName.to_s + realMiddleName.to_s + realLastName.to_s + ' letters in your name?' Just wondering where I went wrong.

• The advantages and disadvantages of using ORM

  Good Morning, I would like to discuss today the advantages and disadvantages of using ORM (such as ADO.NET). Advantages: Speeds-up Development - eliminates the need for repetitive SQL code. Reduces Development Time. Reduces Development Costs. Overcomes vendor specific SQL differences - the ORM knows how to write vendor specific SQL so you don't have to. Disadvantages: Loss in developer productivity whilst they learn to program with ORM. Developers loose understanding of what the code is actually doing - the developer is more in control using SQL. ORM has a tendency to be slow. ORM fail to compete against SQL queries for complex queries. In summary, I believe that the disadvantages of using an ORM (mainly the reduced time taken to perform repetitive tasks) is far outweighed by the disadvantages of ORM e.g. its difficulty to get to grips with. Can people point out were I am going wrong and suggest any further advantages/disadvantages. Many Thanks, J
