• How do I write x86 Debug registers from user space on OSX?

  I'd like to play around with the debug MSRs defined in the x86 spec (DR0-7) from my OSX user-space program. Unfortunately, these require CPL == 0 (aka ring 0). I've thumbed through the OSX syscalls and with the exception of kernel_debug nothing really jumps out as a way to access these. It may be the case that they are only available via some higher level interface like kernel_debug, but it's unclear to me if that's the case or if I just haven't found the magic invocation to get to them. Anyone know how to do this?

• Converting Microsoft Word Smart Quotes to Straight Quotes

  We have a program where the user needs to do a Copy-Paste some content from Microsoft Word into a HTML editor (Visual Studio 2008). That content in the HTML is then used in our confirmation emails. Some of the characters like curly quotes turn into ? on the browser & in our confirmation email. For the browser... I was able to find how to resolve this issue by using jQuery. But for the confirmation email I cannot use JavaScript.   Hey I have run into the following problem when attempting to build a program in java which executes commands on a remote linux server and returns the output for processing... Basically I have installed Cygwin with an SSH client and want to do the following: Open Cygwin, Send command "user@ip"; Return output; Send command "password"; Return output; Send multiple other commands, Return output; ...etc... So far: Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("C:/Power Apps/Cygwin/Cygwin.bat"); Works nicely except I am at a loss as to how to attempt the next steps. Any help?

• How to use MSBuild to create ClickOnce files that match those created by Visual Studio

  I am trying to use MSBuild in a TFS Build file to create click once files for my application. According to MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165431.aspx) it seems that the project file's click once settings should be used unless you override them with property arguments on the command line. However, even though I have specified (in VS) that some prerequisites should be bootstrapped in with the setup, they don't seem to get installed if I use the MSBuild command line to create the package, even though they do seem to get installed if I use Visual Studio to create the ClickOnce package. Please could someone advise me how to get my prerequisites to get installed via ClickOnce when the clickonce package is built using the MSBuild command line? For information, in Visual Studio, project properties, "Publish" tab, "Prerequisite" button, I have ticked "Create setup program to install prerequisite components", I have ticked my pre-requisites and I have specified "Download prerequisites from the component vendor's web site"

  Hi Guys, I am using a wrapper class A which initializes the java.util.logger static class A { public static Logger logger; public static void init(){ logger = Logger.getLogger("test"); } Now, everywhere in my program I call A.init() and then logger.log("Message+uniqid"). But recently I moved to HTTP servlets and I am having problems. Basically, If a app is already running and the logger is logging... and someone else runs the app again, the logger from the previous instance stops and starts logging for the second one. Can anyone have a solution to how I should go about fixing this static variable issue? I can pass the logger into all constructor classes but thats really tedious. Any better solution would be appreciated..

• java regex illegal escape character error not occurring from command line arguments

But if #1 is replaced by Pattern p = Pattern.compile("\d");, it gives compiler error saying illegal escape character. In #1 I also tried printing the pattern specified in the command line arguments. It prints \d, which means it is just getting replaced by \d in #2. So then why won't it throw any exception? At the end it's string argument that Pattern.compile() is taking, doesn't it detect illegal escape character then? Can someone please explain why is this behaviour?

• XCode 3.2.1 and Instruments: Useless Stack Trace

  I've reached the stage where it's time to start tracking down memory leaks and, to my dismay, Instruments is giving me very little to go on (other than the fact that I definitely have leaks). My stack trace contains no information other than memory addresses. Since I'm working on a new project and I've transitioned to version 3.2.1 of XCode in tandem, I'm not sure if it's my program configuration or XCode that's causing the problem. I have found one reference to the issue coupled with a post on the dyld leak that seems to be prevalent with the 3.2.1 release. Since I haven't been able to find much on the problem I'm guessing it's something I've created rather than a systematic issue with XCode. If someone has any idea where I might have thrown a wrench in the works, I would love some pointers. Also, if someone could just verify that the stack trace is indeed functioning properly in 3.2.1 that would be useful as well.

  Hi What was that "wpf trigger events after a few Milli-seconds" ;) Let me explain about that: I have a wpf form with few controls. some of these control over-writing template. for example a textblock with an effect will be trigger on Mouse-Enter event and change color of foreground to something else. But after running program when mouse enter on textBloc, it takes a few Milli-seconds until Mouse-enter event triggers. also all control or better say all control which use mouse-events have this problem. How solve this problem???

This function works well, if i test it in a litte program simply printing out the lines. now i created a webdynpro containing a table to display these customers. I also did the binding! AND it works, but only if an event fires the execute...function. What i need is kind of "execute initially", means that the function gets executed when the table initially loads. How can i do this?   Hello, I am looking for a method to implement lock-free queue data structure that supports single producer, and multiple consumers. I have looked at the classic method by Maged Michael and Michael Scott (1996) but their version uses linked lists. I would like an implementation that makes use of bounded circular buffer. Something that uses atomic variables? On a side note, I am not sure why these classic methods are designed for linked lists that require a lot of dynamic memory management. In a multi-threaded program, all memory management routines are serialized. Aren't we defeating the benefits of lock-free methods by using them in conjunction with dynamic data structures? I am trying to code this in C/C++ using pthread library on a Intel 64-bit architecture. Thank you, Shirish

  We're having problems with Windows silently eating exceptions and allowing the application to continue running, when the exception is thrown inside the message pump. • Using a portable USB monitor in Ubuntu 13.04 (AOC e1649Fwu - DisplayLink)

  Having access to a little bit of IT hardware extravaganza isn't that easy here in Mauritius for exactly two reasons - either it is simply not available or it is expensive like nowhere. Well, by chance I came across an advert by a local hardware supplier and their offer of the week caught my attention - a portable USB monitor. Sounds cool, and the specs are okay as well. It's completely driven via USB 2.0, has a light weight, the dimensions would fit into my laptop bag and the resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels is okay for a second screen. Long story, short ending: I called them and only got to understand that they are out of stock - how convenient! Well, as usual I left some contact details and got the regular 'We call you back' answer. Surprisingly, I didn't receive a phone call as promised and after starting to complain via social media networks they finally came back to me with new units available - and *drum-roll* still the same price tag as promoted (and free delivery on top as one of their employees lives in Flic en Flac). Guess, it was a no-brainer to get at least one unit to fool around with. In worst case it might end up as image frame on the shelf or so... The usual suspects... Ubuntu first! Of course, the packing mentions only Windows or Mac OS as supported operating systems and without hesitation at all, I hooked up the device on my main machine running on Ubuntu 13.04. Result: Blackout... Hm, actually not the situation I was looking for but okay can't be too difficult to get this piece of hardware up and running. Following the output of syslogd (or dmesg if you prefer) the device has been recognised successfully but we got stuck in the initialisation phase. A quick and dirty research on the net gave me some hints towards the udlfb framebuffer device for USB DisplayLink devices. By default this kernel module is blacklisted $ less /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf | grep udl#blacklist udlblacklist udlfb and it is recommended to load it manually. Display okay? Test run on Windows Just to be on the safe side and to exclude any hardware related defects or whatsoever - you never know what happened during delivery. I moved the display to a new position on the opposite side of my laptop, installed the display drivers first in Windows Vista (I know, I know...) as recommended in the manual, and then finally hooked it up on that machine. Tada! Display has been recognised correctly and I have a proper choice between cloning and extending my desktop. Testing whether the display is working properly - using Windows Vista Okay, good to know that there is nothing wrong on the hardware side just software... Back to Ubuntu - Kernel too old Some more research on Google and various hits recommend that the original displaylink driver has been merged into the recent kernel development and one should manually upgrade the kernel image (and both header) packages for Ubuntu. At least kernel 3.9 or higher would be necessary, and so I went out to this URL: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and I downloaded all the good stuff from the v3.9-raring directory. The installation itself is easy going via dpkg: $ sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_amd64.deb$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.9.0-030900_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_all.deb$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_amd64.deb As with any kernel upgrades it is necessary to restart the system in order to use the new one. This can be done either via UI or console, just as you'd prefer it. Adding the external USB display under Linux isn't an issue after all... Settings Manager => Display Personally, I like the console. Let the system decide what's best for your hardware... $ xrandr --output DVI-0 --off$ xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto And there we go... Cloned output of main display: New kernel, new display... The external USB display works out-of-the-box with a Linux kernel > 3.9.0. Despite of a good number of resources it is absolutely not necessary to create a Device or Screen section in one of Xorg.conf files. This information belongs to the past and is not valid on kernel 3.9 or higher. Same hardware but Windows 8 Of course, I wanted to know how the latest incarnation from Redmond would handle the new hardware... Flawless! Most interesting aspect here: I did not use the driver installation medium on purpose. And I was right... not too long afterwards a dialog with the EULA of DisplayLink appeared on the main screen. And after confirmation of same it took some more seconds and the external USB monitor was ready to rumble. Well, and not only that one... but see for yourself. This time Windows 8 was the easiest solution after all. Resume I can highly recommend this type of hardware to anyone asking me. Although, it's dimensions are 15.6" it is actually lighter than my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it still fits into my laptop bag without any issues. From now on... no more single screen while developing software on the road!

• Access violation of member of pointer object

  So I am coding this client/server program. This code is from the client side. The client has an instance of an object mpqs_sieve *instance_; The reason I make it as a pointer is, that mpqs_sieve only has a constructor that takes 3 arguments, and I want to instantiate it at a later point in time. The client first gets some data from the server, and uses this to instantiate instance_. After this, it will request some more data, and upon receiving this (these are three coeffecients for a quadratic polynomial), it should set these in the instance_ object. However upon calling a member function of instance_, I get an access violation on one of the members of instance_ within that function call. I posted my code here: on pastebin, and I get the error on line 100. The call comes from line 71, and before that line 21. Any ideas to solve this? Thanks!

  I just read the JavaDoc for JComboBox (I promise I have a life... I wasn't reading through for fun. =P), and I think the problems I'm having with my program can be attributed to the getSelectedItem() method. The documentation says: Returns the current selected item. If the combo box is editable, then this value may not have been added to the combo box with addItem, insertItemAt or the data constructors. If you can't get values that were added with those methods or with the constructor, of what use is the method? And how can I get the value from an "editable" JComboBox? • POSIX-compatible regex library for Visual Studio C

  I'm working on a C program which will be run in Linux and from inside Visual Studio 2010, and I'm looking for a regex library. GNU comes with a POSIX-compatible regex library, but Visual Studio, despite having C++ std::regex, doesn't have a C-compatible library. GNU has a Windows version of their library (http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/regex.htm), but the DLLs are 32-bit only and the source code can't compile in Visual Studio (~500 errors!). My only requirement is that the end-user should not have to install anything extra, and should get the same behaviour on both platforms. I'm not picky about whether it's POSIX-style, Perl-style or something else. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

• Is there a difference between boost iostream mapped file and boost interprocess mapped file?

  I want to create a mapped binary file into memory; however I am not sure how to create the file to be mapped into the system. I read the documentation several times and realize there are 2 mapped file implementations, one in iostream and the other in interprocess. Do you guys have any idea on how to create a mapped file into shared memory? I am trying to allow a multi-threaded program to read an array of large double written in a binary file format. Also what is the difference between the mapped file in iostream and interprocess?
