• Updating an ADF Web Service Data Control When Service Structure or Location Change

  The web service data control in Oracle ADF gives you a simplified approach to consuming services in ADF applications, and now with ADF Mobile the usage of this service seems to be growing. A frequent question we get is what happens if the service that I'm consuming changes - how do I update my data control? Well, first we should mention that if you do a good design of your application before you actually code - then things like Web service method signature shouldn't change. The signature is the contract between the publisher and the consumer, and contracts shouldn't be broken. But in reality things do change during development stages, so here is how you can update both method signatures and service location with the Web service data control: After watching this video you might be tempted to not copy the WSDLs to your project - which lets you use the right click update on a data control. However there is a reason why the copy is on by default, it reduces network traffic when you are actually running your application since ADF doesn't need to go to the server to find out the service structure. So for runtime performance, you probably should keep the WSDL local.  I encourage you to further look into both the connections.xml file where your service location is saved, and the datacontrols.dcx file where its definition is kept to get an even deeper understanding of how ADF works underneath the declarative layers.

• What is the best type of c# timer to use with an Unity game that uses many timers simultaneously?

  I am developing a stand-alone 3d game in Unity that will have anywhere from 1 to 200 timers running simultaneously. For this game timer durations will range from 5 minutes to 4 days. There will not be any countdown displays or any UI for the timers. An object will be selected, a menu choice will then be selected, and the timer will start. Several events will occur at different intervals during the duration of the timer. The events will be confined to changing the material of the selected object, and calling a 1 second sound effect like a chime or a bell. If the user wants to save or end the game before all the timers are done, the start of the still running timers is to be saved to an XML file such that when the game is started again, any still running timers will have a calculation done to see if the timer is then done, where the game will change the materials appropriately. I am still trying to figure out what type of timer to use, and see also if there are any suggestions for saving and calculating times over several days. What class(es) of timers should I use? Are there any special issues I should look out for in terms of performance?

• How to restore Windows7 after restore ubuntu bootloader?

  At first I will describe my situation in a few points: I have installed Windows7, and then Ubuntu 11.04 on my machine. Then everything works fine and at start of system I have screen from linux where I can choose the system. Then I reinstall Windows7 and install Windows 8 on other partition. Then I can choose between Win7 and win8 when I start system. Then I need my Ubuntu back so I want restore my bootloader from Ubuntu. I boot Ubuntu from USB and in terminal write this commands: sudo fdisk -l Then I get: /dev/sda1 1 13 104391 de Dell Utility /dev/sda2 14 2805 22425601 5 Rozszerzona /dev/sda3 * 2805 41968 314572800 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda4 41968 60802 151282688 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda5 14 2445 19530752 83 Linux /dev/sda6 2445 2805 2893824 82 Linux swap / Solaris Next commands: sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc sudo chroot /mnt grub-install /dev/sda I get Installation finished. No error reported.. And when I start my machine I have old Ubuntu start screen to choose system. Ubuntu works well. But There are no Windows 8 option. But my primary problem is when I choose Windows 7 I have: error: no such device ... error: no such disk so I have no idea what can I do. I really need both systems to work. • Dark screen when wake / Unable to control screen brightness

  Running Ubuntu 11.04 on Lenovo ThinkPad with an Nvida graphics card. The unit goes to sleep when the lid is shut. (The unit goes to suspend mode (not to disk/hibernate), AC gets turned off, running on battery) Upon lid-open sometimes the screen is almost too dark to read. I'm really not sure of the exact cause, (very low batt??). The only fix is a reboot. The screen brightness buttons have never worked in Ubuntu. I have messed w/ the power management preferences. No change. At one point I messed w/ the gnome settings. No change. I have tried a few cmds: echo 9>/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=10 xgamma -gamma .75 None of these help. Most have zero effect. I think it is and acpi thing, but that is just a guess. I'm out of idea's, and looking for suggestions. Thanks

• What partition to use to keep data files in Ubuntu?

  I have been using Ubuntu for a few years and usually my partition set up was the following: Ext3 or Ext4 partition for the system itself (20 GB); A 10 GB swap partition; a big FAT32 partition to store movies, photos, work stuff, etc. (depends on the capacity of the disk, but usually it is what is left from Ext3+Swap, currently it is more than 200 GB). Does this setup sound right? I am considering to switching to one big Ext3 partition now, because the problem with Fat32 in Ubuntu has not gone anywhere: for example, right now I can access my 'big' partition with a 'Data' label only through /media/_themes?END. Pretty strange name for a partition, isn't it? some Linux software fail to read/write on this partition. For example, if I want to play around with rebar and build/make/compile things on this FAT32 partition, it will always complain about permissions and won't work (the same goes for many other kinds of software); it is not stable, I can not refer to some files on this FAT32 partition, because after the next reboot it will be called not '_themes?END', but something else. On the other side I usually begin to run out of space on the Ext3 partition after a few months of usage. So, the question is - what is the best setup of partitions for an Ubuntu system? Should a FAT32 partition be used at all?

• Dualboot harddisk encryption

  I have a system with both Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7 and I want to encrypt the whole harddisk or at least some of my partitions. My partition table is something like this (the ones marked with * are the ones that need to be encrypted): Windows boot reserved partition *Windows system partition (ntfs) *Windows data partition (ntfs) Ubuntu root partition (ext4) *Ubuntu home partition (ext4) Ubuntu swap As I said I don't need to encrypt the whole disk. What is the best way to accomplish this? Maybe something (TrueCrypt?) where I enter the password before the system boots so that it decrypts the whole hdd? Or maybe individual encryption using Windows-only encryption (for Windows partitions) and Ubuntu home encryption (well, for Ubuntu home partition)? By the way, I almost always use Ubuntu, so it would be nice if I could continue to boot Ubuntu by default but have an option to boot Windows too (like in grub). EDIT: I was thinking of doing this: encrypting ubuntu home with eCryptfs (I think this is used to encrypt home when selected during installation). Encrypting Windows partitions with TrueCrypt. Still having Grub as a bootloader, when I choose ubuntu everything goes as normal (home is decrypted when login in). When I choose windows the TrueCrypt password prompt shows and windows boots.

Clarke has said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. As a kid in the midst of an increasing technological revolution, electronics were at the heart of that. Learning electronics was made easy through the Science Fair Electronic Project Kits found at Radioshack. Through the project guides, kids could construct various ‘experiments’ by attaching wires to terminal springs that make circuits. The terminal springs would wire in components such as LED segment lights, photo sensors, resistors, diodes, etc. While it was fun getting the projects to work, the manuals lacked in depth explanation as to what was happening in the circuit to produce the project’s result. Why it was awesome: First, it was a simple buy for parents. Everything you needed to get your child interested in electronics was right in the kit. You didn’t need to breadboard or solder. I remember a distinct feeling of accomplishment making a high-water alarm or a light-sensor game with the realization that the bundles of wires springing up from the kit were actually doing something! Modern equivalent: You can still pick up variations of the 100-in-1 kits, but their popular replacement seem to be Snap Circuits by Elenco. All of the components are mounted on a plastic base with a contact on either end which interconnect with each other and the plastic base that projects can be mounted to. Each component also has the electrical diagram symbol for that component drawn on it so it can help you read schematics. For that reason alone, I like these better. • Turn-based Client-Server Card Game - Unicast (TCP) or Multicast (UDP)

  I am currently planning to make a card game project where the clients will communicate with the server in a turn-based and synchronous manner using messages sent over sockets. The problem I have is how to handle the following scenario: (Client takes it turn and sends its action to server) Client sends a message telling the server its move for the turn (e.g. plays the card 5 from its hand which needs to placed onto the table) Server receives messages and updates game state (server will hold all game state). Server iterates through a list of connected clients and sends a message to tell of them change in state Clients all refresh to display the state This is all based on using TCP, and looking at it now it seems a bit like the Observer pattern. The reason this seems to be an issue to me is this message doesn't seem to be point-to-point like the others as I want to send it to all the clients, and doesn't seem very efficient sending the same message in that way. I was thinking about using multicasting with UDP as then I could send the message to all the clients, however wouldn't this mean that the clients would in theory be able to message each other? There is of course the synchronous aspect as well, though this could be put on top of the UDP I guess. Basically, I would like to know what would be good practice as this project is really all about learning, and even though it won't be big enough to encounter performance issues from this I would like to consider them anyway. However, please note I am not interested in using message oriented middleware as a solution (I have experience with using MOM and I'm interested in considering other options excluding MOM if TCP sockets is a bad idea!).

• Character creation using spritesheets

  I am currently creating a 2D fighting game and have implemented a system where upon starting a new game, the player is presented with the option to create a custom character. I have a set of string arrays set with values that correspond to hair, headgear, chest, lower body and shoes. When done selecting a variety of items from the lists, a code is generated based off the index of each item (i.e 01123), which is then used to assign the correct Spritesheet to the player character. This has already presented a lot of work as I have had to create quite a few spreadsheets based of possible combinations, but I am now looking at a massive amount of work to implement each variation. I have started to look into setting layers for each item to reduce workload, but I am also looking at having different stances for the character - Depending on the currently equipped weapon - so this may present a lot of work either way. My question is, do I have any alternatives or am I stuck creating masses of Spritesheets to cover all combinations? As a side note, how much impact will assigning layered items have on overall performance?

• MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. These entries will also contain stuff we had to remove from the actual presentations due to the time constraints. We managed to create recordings of two of the sessions, which will be uploaded to Channel 9 by Microsoft, afaik.   I will update this blog with information about exact locations when that is done. • Browser privacy improvement implications for websites

  On https://panopticlick.eff.org/ EFF let you test the number of uniquely identifying bits that the browser gives a website. Among these are HTTP header fields such as User-Agent, Accept, Accept-Language and later perhaps ETAG and If-Modified-Since. Also there is a lot of Information that javascript can get from the browser such as time-zone, screen resolution, complete list of fonts and plugins available. My first impression is, is all this information really usable/used on a majority of all websites? For example, how many sites does really send different content-types depending on the http accept header, or what fonts are available(I thought css had taken care of this)? Let's say of these headers/js functionality on day would be gone. Which ones would; never be noticed they were gone? impact user experience? impact server performance? immediately reimplemented because the Internet cannot work without it? Extra credit for differentiating between what can be done, what should be done and what is done in most situations.

• Raspberry Pi and Java SE: A Platform for the Masses

  One of the more exciting developments in the embedded systems world has been the announcement and availability of the Raspberry Pi, a very capable computer that is no bigger than a credit card.  At $35 US, initial demand for the device was so significant, that very long back orders quickly ensued. After months of patiently waiting, mine finally arrived.  Those initial growing pains appear to have been fixed, so availability now should be much more reasonable. At a very high level, here are some of the important specs: Broadcom BCM2835 System on a chip (SoC) ARM1176JZFS, with floating point, running at 700MHz Videocore 4 GPU capable of BluRay quality playback 256Mb RAM 2 USB ports and Ethernet Boots from SD card Linux distributions (e.g. Debian) available So what's taking place taking place with respect to the Java platform and Raspberry Pi? A Java SE Embedded binary suitable for the Raspberry Pi is available for download (Arm v6/7) here.  Note, this is based on the armel architecture, a variety of Arm designed to support floating point through a compatibility library that operates on more platforms, but can hamper performance.  In order to use this Java SE binary, select the available Debian distribution for your Raspberry Pi. The more recent Raspbian distribution is based on the armhf (hard float) architecture, which provides for more efficient hardware-based floating point operations.  However armhf is not binary compatible with armel.  As of the writing of this blog, Java SE Embedded binaries are not yet publicly available for the armhf-based Raspbian distro, but as mentioned in Henrik Stahl's blog, an armhf release is in the works. As demonstrated at the just-completed JavaOne 2012 San Francisco event, the graphics processing unit inside the Raspberry Pi is very capable indeed, and makes for an excellent candidate for JavaFX.  As such, plans also call for a Pi-optimized version of JavaFX in a future release too. A thriving community around the Raspberry Pi has developed at light speed, and as evidenced by the packed attendance at Pi-specific sessions at Java One 2012, the interest in Java for this platform is following suit. • My laptop with Linux/ Ubuntu isn't working

  I have a dell laptop with ubuntu linux. A day I tried to start it up and a black screen just appeared that says: GNU GRUB version1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3 (and these clickable options:) -Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic -Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode) -Memory test (memtest86+) -Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) When I click the first one, a bunch of text appears like: mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/8396a225... failed: invalid argument mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init No init found. Try passing init= bootarg Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) (initramfs) When I enter 'help' a bunch more incomprehensible text appears. Whenever I press the enter key all that pops up is (intetramfs) If anyone can make rhyme or reason out of this please, please help me out so it can boot up normally and i can be set. If there's some kind of special code I have to type in or something I know nothing about computers.

• A case for not installing your own software

  This week I watched some of the Oracle Open World presentations (from the comfort of my Oracle office) and happened on some of Larry Ellison’s comments about cloud computing and engineered systems.  Larry said he sees the move to these as analogous to the moves made by the original adopters of electricity.  The argument goes that the first consumers of electricity had to set up their own power plant.  Then, as the market and infrastructure for electricity matured, power consumers moved from using their own personal power plant to purchasing power from another entity that was focused on power production as their primary product. In the end this was a cheaper and more reliable solution. Now, there are lots of compelling reasons to be looking very seriously at cloud computing and engineered systems for enterprise application deployment.  However, speaking as a software developer of enterprise applications, the part of this that I really love (besides Larry’s early electricity adopter analogy) is that as a mode of application deployment it provides me and my customers a consistent environment in which the applications I am providing will be run.  This cuts way down on the environmental surprises that consistently lead to the hated “well, it works here” situation with the support desk. And just to be clear, I think I hate this situation more than my clients, who I think are happy that at least it is working somewhere.  I hate this because when a problem happens, and let’s face it customers are not wasting their time calling in easy problems, we are seriously disabled when we cannot reproduce the issue which is triggered by something unforeseen in the environment where the application is running.  This situation is incredibly frustrating and an all too often occurrence. I look selfishly forward to cloud computing and engineered systems dramatically reducing the occurrence of problems triggered by unforeseen environmental situations in the software I am responsible for.  I think this is an evolutionary game changer that will be a huge benefit to the reliability and consistent performance of the software for my customers, and may make “well, it works here” a well forgotten phase for future software developers. It may even impact the stress squeeze toy industry.  Well, maybe at least for my group.

• 'Xojo' is the only application that I can't install

  I can't install xojo. When I click install in the software center it's not progressing. In the terminal it's stuck in : gichan02@gichan02-Latitude-D520:~$ sudo apt-get install xojo [sudo] password for gichan02: Reading package lists... [Y/n] Y 0% [Working] then after waiting for an hour for progress it says: Failed to fetch https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/xojo/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xojo/xojo-bin_2013.41-0ubuntu1_i386.deb Could not resolve host: private-ppa.launchpad.net So I added apt repository for 'private-ppa': deb https://ging-giana:[email protected]/commercial-ppa-uploaders/xojo/ubuntu trusty main Then when I try 'apt-get update': GPG error: https://private-ppa.launchpad.net trusty Release: The following signatures were invalid: NODATA 2 Then I noticed something the Software Sources:Other software TAB: Added by software-center; credentials stored in /etc/apt/auth.conf https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/xojo/ubuntu So i go to the '/etc/apt/auth.conf' ,but It cannot be opened and it is not a keyserver. So i uncheck: Added by software-center; credentials stored in /etc/apt/auth.conf https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/xojo/ubuntu GPG error was gone. But then again I found myself at the beginning of the problem.STUCK at '0% [Working]'. 'Xojo' is the only application that I can't install.Any explanation why is it like that?
