• Working with Reporting Services Filters – Part 2: The LIKE Operator

  In the first post of this series, I introduced the use of filters within the report rather than in the query. I included a list of filter operators, and then focused on the use of the IN operator. As I mentioned in the previous post, the use of some of these operators is not obvious, so I'm going to spend some time explaining them as well as describing ways that you can use report filters in Reporting Services in this series of blog posts. Now let's look at the LIKE operator. If you write T-SQL queries, you've undoubtedly used the LIKE operator to produce a query using the % symbol as a wildcard for multiple characters like this: select * from DimProduct where EnglishProductName like '%Silver%' And you know that you can use the _ symbol as a wildcard for a single character like this: select * from DimProduct where EnglishProductName like '_L Mountain Frame - Black, 4_'   So when you encounter the LIKE operator in a Reporting Services filter, you probably expect it to work the same way. But it doesn't. You use the * symbol as a wildcard for multiple characters as shown here: Expression Data Type Operator Value [EnglishProductName] Text Like *Silver* Note that you don’t have to include quotes around the string that you use for comparison. Books Online has an example of using the % symbol as a wildcard for a single character, but I have not been able to successfully use this wildcard. If anyone has a working example, I’d love to see it!

• Nokia backup on a Mac

  Hi there! As I have to bring my phone to a shop for repair, I want to backup my contacts, calenders and text-messages. My Nokia connects perfectly through Bluetooth with iSync. One baddy, however is that text-messages are nowhere to be found or for the matter of fact, impossible to backup from the phone using iSync. Is there a graceful, free application for Mac that would be able to backup (and later restore) the messages on my phone? The worst possible scenario would include me to write a script that uses the Hayes command set and kermit-ize all SMS's (hundreds at least), so a nice click-and-play solution would be nice to know about. I don't consider applications like Parallel/CrossOver as a solution, as PC Suite is quite buggy with those (which does have the functionality to backup SMS and e-mail). Many thanks!

  I want to be able to move a sprite from a current location to another based upon where the user clicks in the window. • The Fantastic New WebLogic on Oracle Database Appliance 2.9 Release is Here!

  Last week was a big day in virtualised ODA-land as it saw the launch of WebLogic on ODA 2.9. Admittedly it doesn't sound like a very exciting release but it is one that we at O-box have been looking forward to for quite some time. Let me explain why, then we'll look into the details... The ODA X4-2 has 48 Intel Xeon cores. That is a lot of compute power. Whilst the largest O-box SOA Appliance single environment configuration can in theory use all those cores (currently with 40 vCPU of SOA!) the vast majority of O-box users will want smaller configurations. Prior to 2.9 the Oracle WebLogic implementation only supported one domain per ODA, so the conundrum O-box development faced last year was either: offer customers only one SOA environment on their O-box for now (but have the benefit of a standard, easily supportable WebLogic installation), or build our own WebLogic/OTD OVM templates from scratch. One of our driving goals with O-box is to give the best possible experience and make the appliance as supportable as possible. Therefore we took the gamble that we would stick with the Oracle's one-domain WebLogic configuration initially, and just hope that it would deliver multi-domain support for us in a timely manner (note: this is probably not a strategy that business textbooks would recommend!). Anyway, we've been working closely with Oracle Product Management for a few months now and I'm delighted to see 2.9 as the fruits of their labour. This also neatly ties in with several recent requests for O-box to include OSB as well as SOA/BPEL (which we have always wanted to have in separate domains). • nginx: php-fastcgi running but php files not executing

  I have recently set up a nginx server with PHP running as FastCGI process. The server is running with HTML files however PHP files are downloading instead of displaying and PHP code is not processed. This is what I have in nginx.conf: server { listen 80; server_name pubserver; location ~ \.php$ { root /usr/share/nginx/html; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /usr/share/nginx/html$fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; } } The command netstat -tulpn | grep :9000 displays the following which indicates php-fastcgi is running and listening on port 9000: tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:9000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 2663/php-cgi If it's if any importance my server is running on CentOS 6 and I installed nginx and PHP using the repositories from The Fedora Project.

  Recently I had to write a DAX formula containing a LASTDATE within the logical condition of a FILTER: I found that its behavior was not the one I expected and I further investigated. At the end, I wrote my findings in this article on SQLBI, which can be applied to any Time Intelligence function with a <dates> argument.The key point is that when you write LASTDATE( table[column] )in reality you obtain something like LASTDATE( CALCULATETABLE( VALUES( table[column] ) ) )which converts an existing row context into a filter context.Thus, if you have something like FILTER( table, table[column] = LASTDATE( table[column] ) the FILTER will return all the rows of table, whereas you probably want to use FILTER( table, table[column] = LASTDATE( VALUES( table[column] ) ) )so that the existing filter context before executing FILTER is used to get the result from VALUES( table[column] ), avoiding the automatic expansion that would include a CALCULATETABLE that would hide the existing filter context.If after reading the article you want to get more insights, read the Jeffrey Wang's post here.In these days I'm speaking at SQLRally Nordic 2012 in Copenhagen and I will be in Cologne (Germany) next week for a SSAS Tabular Workshop, whereas Alberto will teach the same workshop in Amsterdam one week later. • How can I resolve collisions at different speeds, depending on the direction?

  I have, for all intents and purposes, a Triangle class that objects in my scene can collide with (In actuality, the right side of a parallelogram). My collision detection and resolution code works fine for the purposes of preventing a gameobject from entering into the space of the Triangle, instead directing the movement along the edge. The trouble is, the maximum speed along the x and y axis is not equivalent in my game, and moving along the Y axis (up or down) should take twice as long as an equivalent distance along the X axis (left or right). Unfortunately, these speeds apply to the collision resolution too, and movement along the blue path above progresses twice as fast. What can I do in my collision resolution to make sure that the speedlimit for Y axis movement is obeyed in the latter case? • Understanding Service Compensation part of Industrial SOA series

  Some of the most important SOA design patterns that we have successfully applied in projects will be described in this article. These include the Compensation pattern and the UI mediator pattern, the Common Data Format pattern and the Data Access pattern. All of these patterns are included in Thomas Erl's book, "SOA Design Patterns", and are presented here in detail, together with our practical experiences. We begin our "best of" SOA pattern collection with the Compensation pattern. Compensation is required in error situations in an SOA, as multiple atomic service operations cannot generally be linked with classic transactions this would violate the principle of loose coupling. An error situation of this sort will occur, particularly if service operations are combined into processes or new services during orchestration or by applying the Composite pattern, and the transaction bracket has to be expanded as a result. We need mechanisms to undo the effects of individual services (the status changes in the overall system) and to ensure that a consistent system state is maintained at all times, so as to preserve system integrity.   Let's pretend I am going to work on an enterprise application. Say I have 11 modules in the application and I would have to develop Dashboards for every role in the organization for whom I are going to develop application. We Decided to use Asp.Net Web Api and return json data from our apis. We are going to include 11 Self hosted web apis projects in our application (one self hosted web api) for every module. All 11 modules are connected to one Sql server 2012 Database. Then once api is ready we would have to create Business Dashboards (Based upon roles in Organization). So Now my web api client is Asp.Net Mvc application.Asp.Net mvc will consume those web apis. Here is the part for whom all explanation is done. How should I manage Security of all 11 self hosted web apis? How should I only authenticated request is coming? If I authenticate user by login and password and then redirect user to appropriate Dashboard designed for the role that user have and load data by consuming web apis. How should I ensure that the request coming for accessing data is authenticated?

• How do I convert an animated GIF to a YouTube friendly video format?

  My son has made some animations with Pivot Stickfigure Animator which we'd like to upload to YouTube. The problem is Pivot saves as animated GIFs which I can't upload to YouTube. The Wikipedia article recommends using Windows Movie Maker to convert GIF to WMV, but unfortunatley I'm using Window 7 for which you can get the new Windows Live Movie Maker which doesn't seem to support GIFs. I Googled and found an article which said to use Beneton Movie GIF to convert animated GIF to AVI, but this seemed to rely on a 3rd Party application which wasn't installed and so failed. Installing the missing application - pjBmp2Avi - by hand and adding it to the path still didn't allow Beneton to do the conversion. I hoped FFmpeg might do the trick but this only outputs to animated GIFs, it won't read from then. Further Googling found lots of applications with 30 day trials and so on but I was hoping for something free. So any suggestions on how I can convert an animated GIF to a movie file on Windows using free (as in beer) software?

• Problem with sound driver

  I had problem that sound had lag in Flash. (Other than that, there was no problem.) On the internet, I found that installing OSS4 might help me. So I installed OSS4, but there was some problems (no sound on Flash, and couldn't use function key on the laptop - which is quite annoying), so I try to remove OSS4 and re-installing sound modules. After some mess-up, the whole sound was gone. I used Ubuntu for a year, but I don't know how to use the terminal well (All I know is basic commands like sudo, ls, or apt-get).. Now I'm trying to recover by following instructions at this page, but I have some problems... :( When I try to follow instructions: sudo aplay -l finds no sound drivers. find /lib/modules/'uname -r' | grep snd (backtick changed to ' due to code markup) returns nothing. When I try to do sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-'uname -r' linux-generic, it says that it can't find linux-restricted-modules-3.0.0-13-generic package. lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" returns this, which doesn't contain anything about the name of the driver. Writing sudo modprobe sn and pressing tab twice only returns sudo modprobe sn9c102. sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-'uname -r' linux-ubuntu-modules-'uname -r' libasound2 returns this, and didn't change non of above. sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) fails because it can't find the package linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.0.0-13-generic. Compiling ALSA driver doesn't work. When I try to make, it says that /lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic/build/include/linux/modversions.h doesn't exist. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. Can anyone help me? I can re-install Ubuntu, but I don't want to....

• Why does WebDAV fail from inside home network

  On my OSX server there is a folder that is configured in the Server App to be accessible via WebDAV. This folder is used to sync OmniFocus. On my router, I have set up a dynamic dns. When I am outside my home network (physically away or when connected via a vpn), I can connect and sync fine via: https://<server name from dyndns>/<username>/<path to WebDAV folder> However, when I am in my home network, the connection to WebDAV does not work (other connections, AFP, f.ex, do work). What could be some reasons why I can't connect to WebDAV from within my home network? What log files could give hints and where are they stored? I am running OSX server 10.9.3. and server.app. Thanks for your help.

• Constantly diminishing free space on fedora 17

  I don't know how to explain this other than to say that my computer seems to magically run out of free when it runs for a while. The output of df -h . oh my home direction is below /dev/mapper/vg_vmadiath--dev-lv_home 50G 47G 0 100% /home When I run sudo du -cks * | sort -rn | head -11 on /home I get the following output. I got this from decreasing free space on fedora 12 32744344 total 32744328 vmadiath 16 lost+found If I restart my system things seem to fix themselves and I'm left with about 20 or 25GB of free space. I'm running XFCE with XMonad as my window manager under fedora 17. Programs I'm running include the XFCE terminal, grep, find, firefox, eclipse, libre-office writer, zsh, emacs. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'll gladly give you any other output you might need.

• faster ( squid + apache httpd + apache tomcat )

  We have a production setup where we have Squid in the front(caching images, js, css, etc) Apache httpd in the middle(prefork + mod_rewrite + mod_jk/AJP + mod_deflate + mod_php(few php pages)) Apache tomcat 5.5 at the end serving all the dynamic stuff. What would be the best way to reduce the overhead of having 3 servers in the request path ? Wondering if replacing httpd with a faster web server like nginx/lighttpd will help. httpd right now does the job of url rewriting(for clean urls) and talking to tomcat(via mod_jk) and compressing output(mod_deflate) and serving some low traffic php pages. What would be ideal replacement for httpd given that we need these features? Is there a way to replace (squid + apache) with a single entity that does caching well (like squid) for static stuff, rewrites url, compresses response and forwards dynamic stuff directly to tomcat ? heard abt varnish cache, wondering if it can help.

• Why is my vhosts file interfering with my apache deployment?

  When I enable my vhosts file (i.e. uncomment this line: Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf) I am unable to reach localhost. I /am/ able to reach the last virtual host listed in my vhosts file: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/epwbst" ServerName epwbst </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/pxproj" ServerName pxproj </VirtualHost> Typing pxproj in my browser brings up the expected web content. But I am unable to reach epwbst or localhost. If I re-comment the vhost line in my httpd.conf, I am able to reach local host (i.e. "It works!") but obviously am unable to reach my virtual hosts. I don't know how to continue troubleshooting this. Why can't I reach localhost when I've got my vhosts turned on? OS: Mac OS X 10.7 Server version: Apache/2.2.21 (Unix)

• Installing Bugzilla on Ubuntu 9.04 and Plesk

  Hey guys. I'm trying to install the latest Bugzilla version on my ubuntu server. (Want to use a subdomain like bugs.domain.com) I already installed all necessary perl modules and check_modules.pl doesn't show any errors. But when I'm running the testserver.pl script I get the following: TEST-OK Webserver is running under group id in $webservergroup TEST-FAILED Fetch of images/padlock.png failed I'm also not able to visit ANY file within the bugzilla folder from the browser. I'm always getting a 404 error. The bugzilla folder and all containing files are set to apache as the owner. I tried to enter the apache configuration form the installation guide in the http.include file of the domain and in the vhosts.conf file of the subdomain as well. I don't know what to do... Playing with plesks' suexecgroup doesn't bring any solution... I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance!

• Android&ndash;Finding your SDK debug certificate MD5 fingerprint using Keytool

  I recently upgraded to a new development machine, which means the certificate used to sign my applications during debug changed. Under most circumstances you’ll never notice a difference, but if you’re developing apps using Google’s Maps API you’ll find that your old API key no longer works with the new certificate fingerprint. Google's instructions walk you through retrieving the MD5 fingerprint of your SDK debug certificate - the certificate that you’re probably signing your apps with before publishing, but it doesn't talk much about the Keytool command. The thing to remember is that Keytool is part of Java, not the Android SDK, so you'll never find it searching through your Android and Eclipse directories. Mine is located in C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_02\bin so you should find yours somewhere similar. From a command prompt, navigate to this directory and type: keytool -v -list -keystore "C:/Documents and Settings/<user name>/.android/debug.keystore" That’s assuming the path to your debug certificate is in the typical location. If this doesn’t work, you can find out where it’s located in Eclipse by clicking Window –> Preferences –> Android –> Build. There's no need to use the additional commands shown on Google's page. You'll be prompted for a password, just hit enter. The last line shown, Certificate fingerprint, is the key you'll give Google to generate your new Maps API key. Technorati Tags: Android Mapping
