• forcing upgrade or how to upgrade packages after update failed

  How do I continue upgrade or fix upgrade as upgrading in 13.04 to 13.10 failed. I'm currently running terminal in restore mode. I get the error unmet dependencies, but tried to install apt-get -f install, but get this error: unable to fetch some archives. using apt-get update also brings errors for example: failed to fetch http: archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/release.gpg Could not resolve 'archive.canonical.com. Is it my internet connection? Its currently connected via a network cable and internet is on other computers. If internet on my ubuntu 13.10, how do I switch it on? or how can fix my upgrade problem that I can boot ubuntu normal, backup, then format and reload ubuntu 13.10 properly? I posted this problem that has also linked to this problem I mentioned: upgrading to ubuntu 13.10 failed/crashed. I did manager to install/upgrade some of the files and got ubuntu 13.10 to reboot, but not 100%, as it is slow and the unity desktop is not showing 100%. in trying some of the commands online, I get the error that the activity manager is not installed, when trying to install it, it conflicts with activity-log-manager-common. Please assist.

• QA & Testing with UPK

  Most customers know that UPK produces both the word and excel based test scripts for UAT. Did you know that you can use UPK for QA review and bug tracking? To use UPK for QA, create content and assign it appropriately to authorized reviewers. Then have them open the developer, use customized views to find content assigned to them quickly and check out the topics. Then they can use the topic editor to review the content and provide comments right into the bubbles or use explanation frames. It makes QA-ing content this way easier than publishing and sending out .tpcs or docs for people to review. How about UPK for bug tracking? The hardest part about fixing bugs in software is reproducing the error! When you use UPK for bug tracking, it captures the exact steps the user took that gave them the error. Now development can easily walk through the process in a simulated environment to see what might have caused it, they have a documented procedure for what generated the error and they are able to better communicate with the LOB. Also, they can update or attach the simulation\documentation to any defect management software like bugzilla or something similar -all thanks to UPK.

  At PDC 2010 in October Microsoft announced a number of new enhancements/features for Windows Azure. In case you missed it, these new enhancements/features have been released in the new Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio November release (v1.3). The Windows Azure team blog is an excellent resource for information about the new release. Along with the new release the Azure team has also updated the Windows Azure Platform Training Kit. • Karmetasploit (aircrack-ng) Not consistantly Broadcasting AP ssid

  I cannot seem to get karmetasploit to broadcast my AP. Actually, taking it back a few steps I cannot get airbase-ng (v.r2154) to broadcast an SSID. I have seen it broadcast a few intermittent times (not many at all), but most of the time it doesn't show up at all. When it showed up the last time it came up as ad-hoc also. simplest comand I have tried: sudo airbase-ng -e "Wifi-test" -c 11 -v mon0 (I have tried with/without -c and -P -C 30) It appears to work just fine on the attacking machine, but nothing gets broadcasted. I have tried viewing from (3) different computers (winXP, Win7, ubuntu 12.04) Additionally, I am running Ubuntu 12.04 I have tried (3) different wireless cards Internal Card: Intel 4965 External USB: Ubiquiti Atheros carl9170 external SUB: ALFA AWUS036H Realtek RTL8187L I have tried putting each in/out of monitor mode (airmon-ng start monX) I have also tested to see if injection is working: sudo aireplay-ng -9 mon0 sudo aireplay-ng -9 mon0 22:37:54 Trying broadcast probe requests... 22:37:55 Injection is working! 22:37:56 Found 4 APs ... ... Has anyone experienced this issue and have advice/solution? I the aircrack-ng forum site has been down for some time, so I cannot get advice from that site. Thanks, Sparky

• Self Service Reporting With PowerPivot

  There are so many cool new features in Sql 2008 release 2 it was difficult for me to pick a topic for T-SQL Tuesday . But the one that I am now a secret fan of, I once resented for its creation. Let me explain, for years I have encountered reporting systems cobbled together in tools like Access and Excel built by "database hobbyists" who had no formal training in database design or best practices. They would take their monstrosities as far as they could go before ultimatley it stopped working or the person that wrote it left the company. At that point it would become the resident DBA's problem to support it as a Live application. So when I first heard of Power Pivot, a sense of Deja Vu overtook me and I felt like the guy in the Ausin Powers movie , knowing the inevitable is coming but somehow unsure how to get out of the way. But when I eventually saw it in action, I quickly realised that it is a very powerful tool. It has a much smaller "time to market" than traditional BI architectures. Combined with the new features of Excel, some pretty impressive dashboards can be produced.Of course PowerPivot is not a magic bullet and along with potential scalability issues there are the usual issues such as master data management and data quality that cannot be overcome easily with power pivot. As a tool though, it has potential. Traditional BI is expensive, both in terms of time and the amount of resources it takes to deliver the system. The time lag between an analyst or a commercial accountant requesting reports and the report being delivered can make a huge commercial difference. I have observed companies where empowered end users become extremely productive when allowed to plough in to various disperate datasets. It may not be the correct way or the most sustainable but its cheap and quick. In these times when budgets are being slashed and we are forced to deliver more with less, why not empower the end user in a tool that is designed for exactly this task.... @blakmk

• Very Cool &ndash; Miami 311 System for tracking citizen service requests (Windows Azure, Silverlight

  Having grown up in South Florida this short, but very enlightening, video explaining how the City of Miami has implemented a 311 citizen service request system using Windows Azure, Silverlight and Bing Maps definitely caught my attention. Miami311 The Miami311 System is a Windows Azure/Silverlight-based solution which enables City of Miami citizens report and track issues reported to city management. The system uses Bing Maps to plot the location and relevant information about each issue reported. Citizens now have the ability to easily see the status of the issue without having to call the city office. What I found interesting were a couple of benefits that a metropolitan area such as Miami can take advantage of in Windows Azure cloud-based solution. For the city of Miami, both benefits center around the weather. Of course the threat of a hurricane is a real issue in South Florida and what better way to make sure your site stays up during a hurricane then to have the site hosted far away from the eye of the storm. Using a Windows Azure cloud-based architecture the City of Miami is able to host the application within the Microsoft data centers safely away from any hurricane passing through South Florida. The second benefit is the inherent scalability of a Windows Azure based solution. During a severe weather event like thunderstorms or even worse, a hurricane, downed trees and power lines are a commonly reported problem. Being able to quickly scale up the computing resources required to handle the spike in citizens reporting these types of problems on the site is a huge benefit. Once the weather event has passed and downed tree reports begin to subside they can quickly reverse the process and scale the system back down to pre-storm levels. It’s kind of day-to-day kind of stuff but very cool stuff nonetheless. Have a day. :-|

• What is the difference between apt-get and dpkg?

  Both apt-get and dpkg can be used to install and remove packages. When to use which? Context: I'm in stuck in package limbo between 10.04.4 LTS and 12.04.1 LTS after an attempted upgrade via the package manager. For example, to fix things I wanted to remove "skype" so that things it depends on could be freed up. But "aptitude" (my normal package management tool) refused to remove it. The advice at http://administratosphere.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/rescuing-an-interrupted-ubuntu-upgrade/ seems helpful but not adequate to resolve my package conflicts. Also there's a strange thing where the grub menu seems not to be properly interpreted, but eventually I get the splash screen with "/ is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press S to skip or M to recover manually." Manual recovery puts me in a single user shell where I can easily remount / as rw and bring up the network. If I become myself, the command line seems quite robust, but, there seems to be no way to get X11 going.

• The Fantastic New WebLogic on Oracle Database Appliance 2.9 Release is Here!

  Last week was a big day in virtualised ODA-land as it saw the launch of WebLogic on ODA 2.9. Admittedly it doesn't sound like a very exciting release but it is one that we at O-box have been looking forward to for quite some time. Let me explain why, then we'll look into the details... The ODA X4-2 has 48 Intel Xeon cores. That is a lot of compute power. Whilst the largest O-box SOA Appliance single environment configuration can in theory use all those cores (currently with 40 vCPU of SOA!) the vast majority of O-box users will want smaller configurations. Prior to 2.9 the Oracle WebLogic implementation only supported one domain per ODA, so the conundrum O-box development faced last year was either: offer customers only one SOA environment on their O-box for now (but have the benefit of a standard, easily supportable WebLogic installation), or build our own WebLogic/OTD OVM templates from scratch. One of our driving goals with O-box is to give the best possible experience and make the appliance as supportable as possible. Therefore we took the gamble that we would stick with the Oracle's one-domain WebLogic configuration initially, and just hope that it would deliver multi-domain support for us in a timely manner (note: this is probably not a strategy that business textbooks would recommend!). Anyway, we've been working closely with Oracle Product Management for a few months now and I'm delighted to see 2.9 as the fruits of their labour. This also neatly ties in with several recent requests for O-box to include OSB as well as SOA/BPEL (which we have always wanted to have in separate domains). • How do I fix a garbled screen on a Gateway LT3103u?

  I've been having garbled screen problems on a Gateway LT3103u on Ubuntu for a while. I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 and continue to have issues. I installed xubuntu-desktop in case the issues had to do with the sophisticated GNOME graphics. The problem is less bad, but it's still there. After a few minutes of using XFCE, the screen gets garbled. I assume this has something to do with the graphics card, but I don't know how to go about troubleshooting something like this. Where should I start? I will test it for a day or so to see if the problems recur and then post more detail with some links to an explanation. Update 2: It is possible to use this fix for Nvidia card (GTX 260) when graphics is defective after 11.10 upgrade/install? First few restarts was graphic ok, then after few restarts begins suddenly be defective and it stay so. I must returned to 11.04 because this problem and I wait for 12.04. So I hope in this fix.

  I am currently trying to find out how to trim with my new TP and was wondering about the difference of manual/online trimming. So I don't know if it works or not. • Ubuntu Software Centre Issue (unity 11.10) after broken sun-java6-jre package installation

  I have been installing software packages from USC and I am getting the following error message. Worked fine one minute then the message below. Tried to search but couldn't find a solution Previously I was installing the sun-java6-jre package in terminal and had an connection outage and it didnt complete. I attempted an apt-get -f install with no success. i dont know what to try next. I'm relatively new to Linux. • ASP.Net Fails to Detect IE10 without .Net Hotfix

  Benny Mathew recently alerted us that he couldn’t create, edit or delete posts on GeeksWithBlogs in IE10 (Windows 8). It turns out the problem is that ASP.Net fails to detect IE10 causing a javascript error on postback. We’ll be applying a hotfix to the .Net framework on GWB shortly to fix this issue. In the meantime you can use the simple workaround outlined below. (Note that if you create posts using Windows Live Writer you won’t have this issue creating posts). Log into your GWB Account and go to the “Posts” page. Hit F12 to bring up the developer window in IE10. Click on the ‘Browser Mode’ option and change it to IE9. You should now be able to create/edit/delete posts in GWB. Note this also fixes any other sites in IE10 that might not yet have the hotfix applied. You can tell if the hotfix is the likely culprit if you’re using IE10 and see the following error in the Web Developers Console area: SCRIPT5009: '__doPostBack' is undefined Let us know ASAP if there are other issues you are experiencing that aren’t fixed by this workaround!

• My card reader doesn't show up at all, but previously did in 10.10

  I bought a pin-based-USB powered internal media card reader and it worked perfectly when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 a month ago. I used it a few times since and today I booted up the computer and it's not working. Here's how it used to work: In nautilus->computer, 5 "drives" would display even when no card was inserted. One for each slot (SD, XD, CF/MS, etc). Opening one w/o a card would initiate a "Please insert card." dialog. Inserting a card would automatically open nautilus. • Ubuntu 11.10 and Mobility radeon HD 4570, 512MB can't find working drivers

  i'm pretty new to Linux and my new problem is ATI drivers. When i installed Ubuntu then i had black screen issue with the blinking in left upper corner, fixed it with F6 and set the "nolapic" mode, can boot only with "nolapic". Now the problem is the drivers. The suggested drivers, from the "Additional drivers" are not working. Always freeze at the login screen, the divers are: ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver Tried this method: http://drivers.downloadatoz.com/tutorial/28786,how-to-fix-amd-catalyst-11-10-not-working-on-ubuntu-11-10-issues.html? but this method break it down really hard, not ever that helped anymore: sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it exists); sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*; sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon ; sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati; sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core; sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Now i'm here with a fresh install and i cant find anything that works, can someone help me please! • Ubuntu 12.04 suddenly will not boot after compiz crash on lockscreen

  Yesterday i went to work and closed my laptop. When i got home I couldn't get the lock screen to come back up. ctrl+alt+f2 to get to a terminal and Tried to kill compiz, compiz was not running so I tried to restart it got an error opening the display so i tried to restart lightdm again couldn't open display. so I restarted and now I am stuck on the loading screen. I tried booting in recovery mode and all options hang except root, but i'm stuck with read only. booting from a live cd I can mount the drive but again stuck with read only. I'm completely stuck here. checking my default-display-manager returns "/usr/sbin/elsa" as the only line and can't edit it. I've got an 11.10 live cd and my /home is encrypted so i can't try to back anything up at the moment either. How can i resolve this or at the least back up some of my data? Please help!
