  • How to hash and salt passwords

    I realize that this topic have been brought up sometimes, but I find myself not entirely sure on the topic just yet. What I am wondering about how do you salt a hash and work with the salted hash? If the password is encrypted with a random generated salt, how can the we verify it when the user tries to authenticate? Do we need to store the generated hash in our database as well? Is there any specific way the salt preferably should be generated? Which encryption method is favored to be used? From what I hear sha256 is quite alright. And lastly, would it be an idea to have the hash "re-salted" when the user authenticates? Thank you!

  • How to design model for multi-tiered data?

    Say I have three types of object: Area, Subarea and Topic. I want to be able to display an Area, which is just a list of Subareas and the Topics contained in those Subareas. I never want to be able to display Subareas separately - they're just for breaking up the Topics. Topics can, however, appear in multiple Areas (but probably under the same Subarea). How would I design a model for this? I could use ForeignKey from Topic to Subarea and from Subarea to Area, but it seems unnecessarily complex given that I never want to interact with subareas themselves. Also, none of these objects are ever altered or added to by the user. They're just for me to represent information. Maybe there is a better way to represent it all?

  • Have an external java application by notified of changes to Entity EJBs in JBoss AS

    I'm trying to connect an external application to a JBoss AS container. The external application is a Java application that is currently being notified of changes to database entities through a JMS topic. I've added an EntityLifecycleListener class to all my entities that publishes a serialized (and unwrapped) copy of the entity to the JMS topic. The problem is that this implementation ignores the transaction boundaries of the JBoss container. For example, the @PostUpdate event can be fire, generating the JMS message for that entity, but the transaction could be rolled back causing the external application to be notified of an invalid change and become unsync'd. I need my external application to only be notified of successful commits to the database, but I need to be able to publish the entire java POJO to the external application. Is there an official way of doing this?

  • Passing report values to a query

    I'm a novice with Microsoft Access as my background is mostly .NET. I'm sure what I'm trying to accomplish is dead simple but I need some direction. I have a report and a query. The query returns a single numeric value based on a single numeric criteria. Select total from table where id = [topic] I have placed a text box on my report so I can feed the id to this query and in return get the total. It seems like DLookUp is what I want but no matter how I construct it, I get an "#Error" in the text box when I run the report. Currently my DLookUp looks like this (I just hard-coded now for simplicity): =DLookUp("[total]","myquery","[topic] = 3") How can I pass a value from a field on my report to a query so I can return the query's single numeric value?     I'm looking for some followup on an older topic for Wordpress where SQL_CALC was found to slow things down when you have a large DB in Wordpress.     Hopefully this isn't considered too off-topic, but I guess we'll see. I'd love to find and frame a copy of this book. Years ago, in my pre-teen years, I remember reading a lot of CYOA books, and one in particular stands out in my mind as the book that started me down the path of becoming a programmer. The details are fuzzy, but what I remember was that the story involved a programmer who was held captive somewhere and was trying to escape. IIRC, each section or chapter had a short BASIC program you could could type into your computer to simulate something from the story. The one that stands out most in my mind was a very simplistic animation made with pipes, pluses, and dashes that "looked" like a metal grate that opened (sliding upward). I realize this is pretty scant information to go on, but I suspect that anyone else who read the book would immediately remember it. Maybe not, I guess we'll see. Again, my apologies if this is too far off-topic for S.O.

    Setting up a new 64 bit RHEL 6 server with ext4 FS. Have only worked with ext3 and 32bit RHEL5 before. No matter what I try, I cannot get it to work.   • Zscaler. Certs, cookies, and port 80 traffic

    So I work at HQ for a large company that shall remain nameless. We use Zscaler and I had to roll out a 2048 cert per zscaler's request. People around me at work dont understand the technology and think that the cert's are what is allowing internet connectivity. From my understanding(and please chime in) is the cookie located C:\Users\$$$$$$4$$\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player#SharedObjects\Q3JQJQJV\gateway.zscaler.net\zscaler.swf here that gets created when you provide your creds the first time you use the browser. The cert's are just simply a way of inspecting the SSL traffic as zscaler had no way of doing this before without them. They are essentially using the classic MITM attack to parse your SSL traffic. Gmail is smart enough to recognize this as you get a warning. My question is this, is there a product or service that I can use to verify my web browser when at home(I.E. off company network) isn't still getting routed to zscaler's cloud? If i do a tracert that will work fine. It's the port 80 and 443 web traffic zscaler and my company is after. I would like to verify that when I'm off their premise that my web traffic is using only my isp and the path to whatever content I'm searching for. Do the cert's i'm pushing and browser authentication do something behind the curtain that forces web traffic to get routed to zscaler? I searched quite a bit and would very much like to know if I'm ever off company scrutiny. I do know zscaler offers the service to force the scenario im asking about. Can I prove how my web traffic is getting routed? Thanks for any insight. I've been a fan for a long time and your guy's kung fu is very strong:-)

Cognos version is 8.3 SP4. [Content Manager database connection] 1. [ ERROR ] The database connection failed. 2. [ ERROR ] Content Manager failed to start because it could not load driver "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This error may be caused by an unhandled Win32 or C++ exception, or by an access violation encountered during exception handling. Check the SQL error log for any related stack dumps or messages. This exception forces SQL Server to shutdown. To recover from this error, restart the server (unless SQLAgent is configured to auto restart).     I'm trying ZFS on Linux for Oracle Linux (OLE) 6.1 (Red Hat RHEL 6.1 compatible clone). I successfully compiled and installed spl and zfs on it for Oracle Unbreakable Kernel. Zfs is working and I created mirror by zpool create -f -o ashift=12 tank mirror sdb sdc Now I'm trying to share my zfs pool caled "tank/nfs" as mentioned at zfsonlinux site. zfs set sharenfs=on tank/nfs So I created tank/nfs and set nfs to on. Now I'm trying to mount nfs share at local host to test it by mount -t nfs4 127.0.0.1:/tank/nfs /mnt But I get mount.nfs4: mount system call failed So question is: How to share NFS Folder or iSCSI Volumes at OLE rightly and mount it with Linux Client via ZFS on Linux.

  • Windows Server 2008 Stops Responding (Hyper-V Role Enabled)

    The machine is a brand new Dell Precision m6500, Core i5, 8GB RAM. Windows Server 2008 R2 (fully patched) with Hyper-V Role Enabled. Virtualization options in the BIOS are ON, SpeedStep is OFF, couldn't find C1E option in the BIOS to turn it off (I also got the impression that SpeedStep is C1E, but the Intel Product site lists them as separate "features." shrug) The server stops responding without any apparent reason. I've tried testing in multiple scenarios, all of which result in a crash at seemingly random times: With the Server sitting idle, no apps running. Server sitting idle with a Virtual Machine running. Using a BurnInTest application There's no blue screen. It doesn't restart. The screen just sits there. The keyboard backlight still responds and comes on with input, but nothing on the screen changes. There are no errors in the error log. I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. Doing memory tests on bootup results in no errors with the memory. I have a second identical system and the same thing happens there too. I've dual-booted into Windows 7 Profession x64 on this system with no problems. Further testing has shown that the issue is definitely related to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V as it appears the crashing does not happen when the services are not running. I've installed all hotfixes relating to this issue (that I could find): 975530, 979444, 979491, 976427 System is still crashing without response.

  • Disabling standby modus on Gear4 Blackbox speakers

    I have a set of bluetooth Gear4 Blackbox speakers. The sound quality and the design is great, but it switches to standby modus automatically every now and then, when I am listening to music and when it's silent. In that situation, the only way to get them working again is turning them off and on, since they do not react to the remote nor to the buttons on top of it. I emailed Gear4 with this problem and they recommended me to reflash the firmware again, but the problem is persisting after having done that. It has nothing to do with the device that is streaming music. So, the question is, is there a way to disable the standby modus permamently, so the speakers are all the time active even if I am not using them? To switch them off I would just turn the power switch off.     Hello I am trying to setup nginx with stub status so I can monitor nginx requests etc.. with serverdensity.com. I needed to put something like this in nginx.conf server { listen 82.113.147.xxx; location /nginx_status { stub_status on; access_log off; allow 82.113.147.xxx; deny all; } } And with this monitoring acctualy works. However It seems I lost "include" part in my nginx.conf and now none of vhosts in sites-enabled work.   • ESXi 4.0 Guests Locking up

    I installed ESXi 4.0 on an HP Proliant g5 with a 64bit Xeon processor and took advantage of the free license as I work for a public school. I created two instances of server 2003 from scratch, one to be the DC, DHCP, the other to be a file server and DNS/DHCP backup. I had both guests up and running fine, setup my user accounts, transferred the data, etc etc. Once I joined a client machine to the domain, I would find that both of my Windows guests would lock up. Sometimes it would be for five or so minutes, once it was overnight. The "locked up" state means that as far I could tell, all services were stopped; dhcp no longer handed out IP's, DNS stopped working, I couldn't RDP into the server. The ESXi host, my HP server, was still running fine. VSphere was working, and I could look at the performance of the individual guests.I would try Powering off the hosts from inside VSPhere, and the hosts would start powering off, but get stuck at 95%, and stay that way, sometimes only for 10 minutes, others for hours. Several times I had to restart ESXi from it's console in order to restart my machines. Now, can anyone tell me what is happening, and how I can fix it, or take steps to prevent it? I hired a consultant to come take a look at it, someone who's experience and knowledge I trust, and he told me he had never seen anything like this ever before. He spoke to a friend of his who is VM certified, and he also said he had never heard of this issue. Thanks for your replies, and I'll do my best to respond ASAP. Currently, the server is powered off, and I've reinstituted my nine year old Server 2000 boxes, and I'm considering installing ESXi 3.5. Does anyone know a host created in 4.0 will work in 3.5? I'd really like to avoid having to rebuild those accounts! I know 4.0 works on this server, as I have another server in another school with the same exact hardware running 4.0 fine. Brendan
