• Recovering a deleted partition after installing Ubuntu?

  I have a serious problem. I Installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my Laptop. I format all partitions (Windows)/(Erase all data and Install Ubuntu):( . How do I recover my accidentally lost Windows partitions after installing Ubuntu?. I try using PartitionWizard and Testdisk. But cannot recovery partition, Partitionwozard and Testdisk only detected the linux partition (Linux/Ext4 and Linux/Swap). I hope the answer. Please help. and Sorry for my English is not good. Thanks :)

  17.3" FULL HD (1920X1080) LED LCD w/nVIDIA GeForce® GT 425M w/1GB GDDR3 + Intel GMA HD4500 i also got the 640m core i7, i have 8 gb ram but for some damn reason, when there is a batle in progress it appears as if my graphics card or something is not powerful enough, shouldn't these specs be more than enough to handle star craft II? what could i do to improve my laptop? i also got the 64 bit os

• Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening.   I installed the askubuntu scope/lens in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS but it seems to be almost extremely laggy. Sometimes when I enter text in the searchfield it takes a (whole lot of) while before something is displayed underneath the icons in text. Usualy I just see the first letters of the text I put in. Like: "damn, why is this scope so slow" i see "find 'dam'" on ask ubuntu" This 'bug' makes the lens/scope/thing almost impossible to use for me.

• Setting the view of the toolbar to Large icons creates a gap in the Windows 7's taskbar

  If you add a custom toolbar in the Windows 7 taksbar and set the toolbar view to Large Icons (and the icons in the toolbar are not set to Use small icons), the height of the taskbar unexpectedly increases by around 5 pixels, which makes a rather stupid gap at the bottom of the screen. If the option Use small icons is used for the taskbar appearance, the height of the taskbar is normal. It appears that the programmers at Microsoft were not very meticulous while designing the Windows 7 UI; it is obviously a bug. I was wondering if there is a registry hack to fix this or if anyone knows any solution to the problem, except for the obvious one: "use the small icons"? Thanks.

  I discovered that on large/huge fonts ClearType does have a negative impact. Just take a look at http://patterns.dataincubator.org/book/ page (check title with huge fonts versus normal text). If you are on Windows 7 you can use Win+Plus/Minus to zoom in/out. I'm looking for a configuration that would make both small fonts and large fonts look well. The system is Windows 7 but I suppose you could replicate the problem on Vista and even XP if you activate ClearType. Current results: ClearType on and tunned - small fonts looking good and large one looking bad ClearType off - small fonts looking bad and large one looking ok (smoothed)

• What's the best solution for file sharing in my case? DAS or NAS?

  I want to have in my network small, cheap and energy efficient server with will be fully customizable (Gnu/Linux, OpenBSD). What is more I want to have big, redundant storage in my network and access to it via server. I have already small terminal without hard drive (no SATA/PATA, one drive on USB) which works fine. I don't want to buy big server, or to use regular computer for that. It's not cheap. I thought about a small case (ITX?), and cheap computer in this with SATA ports, but I cannot find anything interesting :( I thought about NAS in network and server independently and booting server from NAS, I'm not sure which technologies will be good for that, and I don't know what with performance. Direct connection to NAS through network from workstation is next pro for that. What do you think about DAS? It will be good for that?

• Are Plesk server backups useful?

  I'm working for a startup now, and I'm the programmer. Because of our small team size, I'm also handling the server management for now (until we get a dedicated server administrator.) I've never used Plesk before, and the server we're using (a Media Temple Dedicated Virtual server) had it installed when I got here. One of my first jobs was to set up backups: Plesk was already running it's nightly server-wide backups. I created a small script to dump the web app, it's DBs and any assets, tar them, store them, and then copy them to another small server we have (to backup the backups.) But, we're constantly running into hard drive space issues because of the Plesk backups. And I'm wondering, are they useful? If I have the web app and all of it's assets, I could easily enough get another server up and running. Do we need to keep running Plesk's backups? Thoughts?

Currently, we use EC2 for a small instance and have a need for another large/extra-large instance as we are beginning to deploy to the Cloud and get ready to release our "alpha" version. While EC2 was my choice for numerous reasons (reliability, accessibility - small team is geographically dispersed, maintainability, and things of that nature), it appears to be rather expensive. While the product will ultimately be deployed in the Cloud (be it EC2 or otherwise) and that experience would help the development team, would it make sense to purchase a physical server and stick it in the basement or bite the bullet and pay the price for EC2 (or other Cloud Providers)? • Web Content Filtering for Windows Clients

  I'm working with a small business to solve a bunch of problems. One is their Windows 7 POS registers need to have web access restricted to only three remote support sites, but the back office machine needs an unfiltered connection. I'd like something I can install and configure on the few registers to block all but those few sites. In a perfect world this would restrict the normal register user, but the admin user would not be filtered. Free is best, if it works, but a small fee would be alright too. Microsoft's Family Safety filter is close, but requires a Windows Live account, which isn't ideal, but may be alright. Anyone use this in a small business environment? I'd prefer something easily managed at the local machines. K9 Web Protection is interesting and I'm going to look into it more. Are there other options? Seems like someone would have made something simple like this as an open source project, but maybe not.

But after submission it reloads the current page as mentioned in the form action. But when I refresh the page to see the comment being added it asks to re submit. If I hit submit then the comment adds again. How can I stop this from happening? Maybe I could hide the comment box and display a thank you message but that would not stop a repeat entry. • Numerous Unexpected Obstacles Ruining any Project Plans

  I am working as software developer and struggling with this problem time and time again for almost thirteen years. There seems not to be any way out of the following problem. And it happens with small projects as well. For example, I plan to write an extension for Microsoft Visual Studio. I dowload learning materials, get some book on the topic and allocate time for learning and development. However, during the development, many seemingly trivial problems arise, for example: Why the script refuses to delete the file? Why Visual Studio does not register the extension? (after two days) OK, it registers it, but now it got broken. How to fix it? each of these "small" obstacles usually take 1-5 days to resolve and the project finally consumes several times more man-hours than planned. Maybe it happens only because I am working on Microsoft platform and many of their Frameworks and architectures are bit confusing and badly documented. I would like to have most problems resolved by finding answer in a book or official documentation (MSDN), but the only answer I usually find is on some weird forum or personal blog googled after desperately searching for any relevant information on the topic. Do you have the same struggles? Do you have techniques on how to prevent these problems? I was thinking of simply multiplying projected time for a given project by some factor, but this does not help. Some projects get done briskly and some take months and the guiding factor here are these small "glitches" which take programmers whole weeks to resolve. I have to admit that lots of these obstacles demoralizes me and drains me of focus and joy of work (who likes to get back to work when he have to resolve some stupid registry problem or weird framework bug instead of doing creative work?) After the project is finally done, I am feeling like dying from thousand cuts.

  I saw the answer to this question: How does thinking on design patterns and OOP practices change in dynamic and weakly-typed languages? There it is a link to an article with an outspoken title: Are Design Patterns Missing Language Features. But where you can get snippets that seem very objective and factual and that can be verified from experience like: PaulGraham said "Peter Norvig found that 16 of the 23 patterns in Design Patterns were 'invisible or simpler' in Lisp." and a thing that confirms what I recently seen with people trying to simulate classes in javascript: Of course, nobody ever speaks of the "function" pattern, or the "class" pattern, or numerous other things that we take for granted because most languages provide them as built-in features. OTOH, programmers in a purely PrototypeOrientedLanguage? might well find it convenient to simulate classes with prototypes... I am taking into consideration also that design patterns are a communcation tool and because even with my limited experience participating in building applications I can see as an anti-pattern(ineffective and/or counterproductive) for example forcing a small PHP team to learn GoF patterns for small to medium intranet app, I am aware that scale, scope and purpose can determine what is effective and/or productive. I saw small commercial applications that mixed functional with OOP and still be maintainable, and I don't know if many would need for example in python to write a singleton but for me a simple module does the thing. patterns So are there studies or hands on experience shared that takes into consideration, all this, scale and scope of project, dynamics and size of the team, languages and technologies, so that you don't feel that a (difficult for some)design pattern is there just because there isn't a simpler way to do it or that it cannot be done by a language feature?

• What is the best aproach for coding in a slow compilation environment

  I used to coding in C# in a TDD style - write/or change a small chunk of code, re-compile in 10 seconds the whole solution, re-run the tests and again. Easy... That development methodology worked very well for me for a few years, until a last year when I had to go back to C++ coding and it really feels that my productivity has dramatically decreased since. The C++ as a language is not a problem - I had quite a lot fo C++ dev experience... but in the past. My productivity is still OK for a small projects, but it gets worse when with the increase of the project size and once compilation time hits 10+ minutes it gets really bad. And if I find the error I have to start compilation again, etc. That is just purely frustrating. Thus I concluded that in a small chunks (as before) is not acceptable - any recommendations how can I get myself into the old gone habit of coding for an hour or so, when reviewing the code manually (without relying on a fast C# compiler), and only recompiling/re-running unit tests once in a couple of hours. With a C# and TDD it was very easy to write a code in a evolutionary way - after a dozen of iterations whatever crap I started with was ending up in a good code, but it just does not work for me anymore (in a slow compilation environment). Would really appreciate your inputs and recos. p.s. not sure how to tag the question - anyone is welcome to re-tag the question appropriately. Cheers.

  Hi all, me and my very good friend do a small bussiness. We have company and we develop web apps using Scala. We have started 3 months ago and we have a lot of work now. We cannot afford to employ another programmer because we can't pay him now. Until now we try to manage entire developing process very simply. We use excel sheets for simple bug tracking and we work on client requests on the fly. We have no plan for next week or something similar. But now I find it very inefficient and useless. I am trying to find some rules or some methodology for small team or for only two guys. For example Scrum is, imo, unadapted for us. There are a lot of roles (ScrumMaster, Product Owner, Team...) and it seems overkill. Can you something advise me? Have you any experiences with software management in small teams? Is any methodology of current agile development fitten for pair of programmers? Is there any software management for simple bug tracking, maybe wiki or time management for two coders? thanks a lot for sharing.

  When you want to bring up a compute server in your environment and need InfiniBand connectivity, usually you go through various installation steps. This could involve operating systems like Linux, followed by a compatible InfiniBand software distribution, associated dependencies and configurations. What if you just want to run some InfiniBand diagnostics or troubleshooting tools from a test machine ? What if something happened to your primary machine and while recovering in rescue mode, you also need access to your InfiniBand network ? Often times we use opensource community supported small Linux distributions but they don't come with required InfiniBand support and tools. In this weblog, I am going to provide instructions on how to add InfniBand support to a specific Linux image - Parted Magic.This is a free to use opensource Linux distro often used to recover or rescue machines. The distribution itself will not be changed at all. Yes, you heard it right ! I have built an InfiniBand Add-on package that will be passed to the default kernel and initrd to get this all working. Pr-requisites You will need to have have a PXE server ready on your ethernet based network. The compute server you are trying to PXE boot should have a compatible IB HCA and must be connected to an active IB network. Required Downloads Download the Parted Magic small distribution for PXE from Parted Magic website. Download InfiniBand PXE Add On package. Right Click and Download from here. Do not extract contents of this file. You need to use it as is. Prepare PXE Server Extract the contents of downloaded pmagic distribution into a temporary directory. Inside the directory structure, you will see pmagic directory containing two files - bzImage and initrd.img. Copy this directory in your TFTP server's root directory. This is usually /tftpboot unless you have a different setup. For Example: cp pmagic_pxe_2012_2_27_x86_64.zip /tmp cd /tmp unzip pmagic_pxe_2012_2_27_x86_64.zip cd pmagic_pxe_2012_2_27_x86_64 # ls -l total 12 drwxr-xr-x  3 root root 4096 Feb 27 15:48 boot drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 4096 Mar 17 22:19 pmagic cp -r pmagic /tftpboot As I mentioned earlier, we dont change anything to the default pmagic distro. This does not have to be over InfiniBand. Just use your standard ethernet interface and network. If using menus, then pick the new entry that you created in previous section. Enable IPoIB After a few minutes, you will be booted into Parted Magic environment. Open a terminal session and see if InfiniBand is enabled. You can use commands like: ifconfig -a ibstat ibv_devices ibv_devinfo If you are connected to InfiniBand network with an active Subnet Manager, then your IB interfaces must have come online by now. You can proceed and assign IP address to them. This will enable you at IPoIB layer. Example InfiniBand Diagnostic Tools I have added several InfiniBand Diagnistic tools in this add-on. • GRUB 2 problem after Mac OS X update

  I have a MacBook Pro in dual boot Mac OS X / Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin). When I boot it I have a rEFIt menu, and I can chose between Mac OS X and Linux. A few days ago I have updated Mac OS X from 10.7 (Lion) to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) using a .dmg image provided by my company. Since then when I select Linux in rEFIt it says: No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key I have tried going to rEFIt partitioning tool. This is what I got: As suggested in Mac OSX Mavericks update rEFIT broken I wanted to fix the issue the same way as AndrewM, but I don't have the option "MBR table must be updated". Then I booted on Ubuntu 12.04 CD, chose repair broken system, chose root patition /dev/sda6 as this is where my Ubuntu file system is. I got a shell, but I don't really know how to repair the poblem since if it was just Windows dual boot. A GRUB update would solve the issue, but here I don't know where the GRUB 2 is installed. Here are results from Parted, and it is a bit confusing for me as the Mac partition is the one with boot: As you can see the entry 1 is an EFI system partition and is the boot partition, so I wonder if I should install GRUB there or in sda6, which is the Ubuntu filesystem. I am not sure should I work on rEFIt shell or Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I don't remember where GRUB was before update. UPDATE: using same link above I have tried RoundSparrow hilltx answer and installed rEFInd, but the result is same.... still no bootable device when I select Linux. UPDATE 2: just used alternate CD again, mounted on /dev/sda6 and the ran update-grub. It seemed to wok and started listing all my kernels. But after rebooting several times still no bootable device when I select Linux in rEFInd. UDATE 3: Have tried to boot from Ubuntu cd and select "boot from first available filesystem. I got error and dropped to grub rescue shell.
