• Know if a Website project is recompiling itself in the background?

  A number of team members update a central ASP.NET dev site (Website project, not a Web application type). Some kinds of changes cause a recompile/rebuild in it. The large website takes a while to recompile and we've noticed it will still seemingly serve out dynamic pages before everything is internally updated. During the site's "gestation" period, our mileage varies while hitting it. Sometimes we get a correct page, sometimes an compilation error page that will eventually be served up without a compilation error, and at other times an unexpected hybrid. Is it possible to query an ASP.NET website application to see if it's currently compiling or rebuilding itself? If so I would write a status page that the team could reference when they're getting weird behaviour, so they would know to wait.

• APC on Windows makes server terminate connection

  Hello. I have a slight problem and cannot for the life of me figure out what is happening. I am running a Linux machine on a server with APC enabled. Everything works fine. Now when I enable APC on Windows the server starts terminating the connection. You know, the "Site currently unavailable" message Firefox spits out. I tried the access logs, error logs and there is nothing there to indicate an error. How could APC influence on a server like this? BTW: I have a CMS on my local server/live server. On the live server it works great with APC. On the dev server the connection terminates. The strange thing is, simpler scripts execute just fine. The CMS is using CakePHP. Any help would be very appreciated.

• Is there a Ruby on Rails framework like equivalent for .NET development?

  Answers like ASP.NET MVC or Entity Framework really aren't acceptable as they address just one aspect of the problem domain. I'm looking for a framework ... a REAL framework that gives me the same features out of the box that Rails does. As such it should include at minimum: MVC for presentation ORM Ability to provide simple configuration for whatever environment (dev, QA, Production, etc...) Migration like functionality Ability to generate code in all layers (similar to scaffolding like behavior, etc...) Project template so as to create similar functionality as the "rails my_app" command. Thanks.

  I have a simple GAE app that includes a login/logout link. This app is running on the dev server at the moment. The base page handler gets the current user, and creates a login/logout url appropriately.   I'm diving into iPhone development and one of the core concepts im trying to get my head around is view controllers. If you look at the GLPaint example on the apple dev site, you'll see a project that has... An app delegate class A uiwindow subclass And a uiview subclass And the uiview subclass implements all the core graphics painting logic and handles the touch events. My questions are, why is there no view controller implemented to handle that view logic? Could you use a view controller to implement that logic or does it have to be implemented in the uiview subclass? And last, when should you use a view controller to implement the view logic code?   I am writing an abstract matrix class (and some concrete subclasses) for use on very differing hardwares/architectures, etc. and I want to write a row and column type that provides a transparent reference to the rows and columns of the matrix. However, I want to tune for performance, so I'd like this class to be essentially a compiler construct. In other words, I'm willing to sacrifice some dev time to making the overhead of these classes as small as possible. I assume all (small) methods would want to be virtual? Keep the structure small? Any other suggestions?

Update: I've read the link dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/post/direct_messages/new ACB gave me, and I understood the idea, how post direct messages. But the issue is there is no any word about autentification in this link. But I can't post tweet without autentification. Should I use TWRequest and set the account to this request? • Looking for fast "Find in Files" program

  I currently have a directory with 98,000 individual archive transaction files. I need to search those files for user input strings and have the option to open the files as it finds them or at the end of the search. I'm using Notepad++ currently and, while functional, it's quite slow. I thought about writing my own, but I am only familiar with .NET and I'm a beginner. Also, I'm not sure how efficient that would be compared to NP++. This tool would be used again and again so the dev time would definitely be worth it if it came to that. Is there some other tool out there that's already developed that would accomplish this?

• increasing speed and efficiency of ajax call

  I'm not the most disciplined dev, dont know standards and am self-taught so bear with me. I create stuff very logically and fast but not always using 'programming standards'. I have a mobile app using geolocation API. it gets thousands of places from my db and makes gmaps v3 markers for the ones around the user's current location. there is an ajax call from my JS to an aspx page that calls the database, makes a json string, and sends the json string to the javascript that then creates the google map markers. would i save time if the json string was in a flat file? im not sure if, generally speaking, accessing a sql db from an aspx page is faster than c# file i/o on a flat file with pre-rendered JSON. (of course, using the flat file, it would update everytime the db is updated)

• Did anybody use the constream (constrea.h) lib?

  Two years ago, I used the conio.h (actually conio2.h for Dev-C++) to create a console form interface. Now I want to make the same thing, but C++ std lib does not provide the needed functions and I don't want to use the old C conio lib. I found some websites which highlights the constream lib, but I have no idea to use it on VS! I tried just copying the header file into my project, but VS show several erros. • JQuery .get() only passing first two data parameters in url

  I have a $.get() call to a PHP page that takes 4 GET parameters. For some reason, despite giving the $.get() call all 4, it only passes the first two. When I look at the dev console in chrome, it shows the URL that gets called, and it only passes action and dbname.   I'm trying to port an application from using HAL to using pure udev. It is written in python and will use the gudev library, though I would love to see examples in any language. I'm able to get all attached video devices (such as cameras) via: import gudev client = gudev.Client(["video4linux"]) for device in client.get_devices(): print device.get_sysfs_attr("name"), device.get_device_name() This prints out something like: USB2.0 UVC WebCam /dev/video0 I am also able to get a list of block devices, but how can I: Tell if it is a CD/DVD drive? Tell if media is currently inserted if the drive supports removable media? Tell what the name/label of the media is (e.g. FUTURAMAS1 for a DVD)?   I wrote a program in C++/OpenGL (using Dev-C++ compiler) for my calculus 2 class. The teacher liked the program and he requested me to somehow put it online so that instead of downloading the .exe file and run it the web browser will run it automatically just like a java applet. The question is: How if possible, can I display a C++/OpenGL program in a web browser? I am thinking of moving to JOGL which is a java interpretation of OpenGL but I rather stay in C++ since I am more familiar with it. Also is there any other better and easier 3D web base API that I can consider?

  Hi folks! I'm profiling application with btrace (https://btrace.dev.java.net) and faced with limitation. I try to get a name of current java.lang.Thread. Normaly you can call getName() but it's forbidden in btrace-scripts (any calls exception BTraceUtils). Is there any idea how to get String from char[]. The original task is check if name of thread contains sub-string and only then log out tracing info (reducing output). thanks, Max.

• Oracle: Difference in execution plans between databases

  Hello, I am comparing queries my development and production database. They are both Oracle 9i, but almost every single query has a completely different execution plan depending on the database. All tables/indexes are the same, but the dev database has about 1/10th the rows for each table. On production, the query execution plan it picks for most queries is different from development, and the cost is somtimes 1000x higher. Queries on production also seem to be not using the correct indexes for queries in some cases (full table access). I have ran dbms_utility.analyze schema on both databases recently as well in the hopes the CBO would figure something out. Is there some other underlying oracle configuration that could be causing this? I am a developer mostly so this kind of DBA analysis is fairly confusing at first..

• iTunes 9.0.2 hangs on launch on Mac OS X 10.6.2

  My iTunes 9.0.2 hangs on launch in OS X 10.6.2. This doesn't happen all the time, only if I've been running for a while. Then it will recur until I restart. Similarly Safari 4.0.4 will hang in the flash player plugin when about to play a video. If I restart both these problems go away until later. Based on this crash dump I am suspecting Audio Hijack Pro. I will try to install a newer version of the driver involved, but so far I haven't had much luck. I have uninstalled the Flash Plugin (10.0.r42 and r32) but clearly I want it in the long run. This is iTunes' crash report. • Dynamic connection for LINQ to SQL DataContext

  If for some reason you need to specify a specific connection string for a DataContext, you can of course pass the connection string when you initialise you DataContext object.  A common scenario could be a dev/test/stage/live connection string, but in my case its for either a live or archive database.   I however want the connection string to be handled by the DataContext, there are probably lots of different reasons someone would want to do this…but here are mine. I want the same connection string for all instances of DataContext, but I don’t know what it is yet! I prefer the clean code and ease of not using a constructor parameter. The refactoring of using a constructor parameter could be a nightmare.   So my approach is to create a new partial class for the DataContext and handle empty constructor in there. First from within the LINQ to SQL designer I changed the connection property to None.  This will remove the empty constructor code from the auto generated designer.cs file. Right click on the .dbml file, click View Code and a file and class is created for you! You’ll see the new class created in solutions explorer and the file will open. • IIS 7&rsquo;s Sneaky Secret to Get COM-InterOp to Run

Until last week. I’m running a project to upgrade a web interface to an older COM-based application.  The old web interface is all classic ASP and lots of tables, in-line styles and a bunch of other late 90’s and early 2000’s goodies.  So in addition to updating the UI to be more modern looking and responsive, I decided to give the server side an update, too.  So I built some COM-InterOp DLL’s (easily through VS2012’s Add Reference feature…nothing new here) and built a test console line app to make sure the COM DLL’s were actually built according to the COM spec.  There’s a document management system that I’m thinking of whose COM DLLs were not proper COM DLLs and crashed and burned every time .NET tried to call them through a COM-InterOp layer. Anyway, my test app worked like a champ and I felt confident that I could build a nice façade around the COM DLL’s and wrap some functionality internally and only expose to my users/clients what they really needed. So I did this, built some tests and also built a test web app to make sure everything worked great.  It did.  It ran fine in IIS Express via Visual Studio 2012, and the timings were very close to the pure Classic ASP calls, so there wasn’t much overhead involved going through the COM-InterOp layer. You know where this is going, don’t you? So I deployed my test app to a DEV server running IIS 7.5.  When I went to my first test page that called the COM-InterOp layer, I got this pretty message: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {81C08CAE-1453-11D4-BEBC-00500457076D} failed due to the following error: 80040154 Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG)). It worked as a console app and while running under IIS Express, so it must be permissions, right?  I gave every account I could think of all sorts of COM+ rights and nothing, nada, zilch! Then I came across this question on Experts Exchange, and at the bottom of the page, someone mentioned that the app pool should be running to allow 32-bit apps to run.  Oh yeah, my machine is 64-bit; these COM DLL’s I’m using are old and are definitely 32-bit.  I didn’t check for that and didn’t even think about that.  But I went ahead and looked at the app pool that my web site was running under and what did I see?  Yep, select your app pool in IIS 7.x, click on Advanced Settings and check for “Enable 32-bit Applications”. I went ahead and set it to True and my test application suddenly worked. Hope this helps somebody out there from pulling out your hair.

• Stream Media from Windows 7 to XP with VLC Media Player

  So you’ve got yourself a new computer with Windows 7 and you’re itching to take advantage of it’s ability to stream media across your home network. But, the rest of the family is still on Windows XP and you’re not quite ready to shell out the cash for the upgrades. Well, today we’ll show you how to easily stream media from Windows 7 to Windows XP with VLC Media Player. On the host computer running Windows 7, you’ll need to have an account set up with both a username and password. A blank password will not work. The media files will need to be located in a shared folder. Note: If the media files are located within the Public directory, or within the profile of the user account you use to log into the Windows 7 computer, they will be shared automatically. Sharing your Media Folders On your Windows 7 computer, right-click on the folder containing the files you’d like to stream and choose Properties.     On the Sharing Tab of the folder properties, click the Share button. Click OK.   Type or select from the drop down the user account you’ll use to log in, or select “Everyone” to share with all users. Then click Add. You may change the permission level, but only Read permission is required to play the media. Repeat this process for any additional folders you wish to share.    The Windows XP Client Computer Now that we’ve shared our media folders from the Windows 7 computer, we’re ready to play our files on the Windows XP computer. Download and install the VLC Media Player. (See link below) Then open VLC. Click on Media from the and select Open File… Browse your network for the shared folder that contains your media.   You’ll be prompted to log in to the host computer. Provide the credentials for a user on the Windows 7 computer. Click OK.   Select your media file and click Open.    Your media playback will begin momentarily.   This is a nice and easy way to stream media across your home network without upgrading multiple computers to Windows 7.  Plus, VLC is certainly no slouch as a Media Player.   About Stack Exchange Notifier is a handy extension for Google Chrome browser that displays your current reputation, badges on Stack Exchange sites and notifies you on reputation's changes. You will now get notified of comments on your own posts (questions and answers) and of any comments that refer to you by @username in a comment, even if you do not own the post (aka mentions).
