  Ops Center has two database options - you can have Ops Center automatically install a database on the Enterprise Controller system, or you can use your own database on any system you choose. If you use your own database, it's obviously important to make sure that this database is running smoothly. You have a few tools that can help you do this. The first is the ecadm command. This command has a variety of subcommands that let you view and control the status of the Enterprise Controller. Two subcommands in particular are relevant to the database: ecadm verify-db: This subcommand verifies that the database is reachable and that the schemas are configured with the proper permissions. Use the -v option if you want more details; the command is normally terse if the DB is configured correctly. ecadm sqlplus -r: This subcommand opens an sqlplus console connection to the database. The -r option makes this console read-only, which isn't necessary, but is generally a good idea. You can also view the database contents using Oracle SQL Developer or other tools. • Software solution from the 2000's, should I attempt to patch or remake the whole thing?

  I was sent out to discuss a system that a certain company is currently using and what should be done with it. The company manufactures various carton displays. This system was developed to keep track of clients, orders and prices. Lots have happened since the system was created and the system is now, as the manager described it, "locked up" and "problematic", which I translate as "not dynamic" and "unstable". Some info about the system It was developed around the year 2000 Fairly small system, 2-5 users, 6 forms, ~8 tables with average quantities of data Built on early Visual Basic, forms created with the drag and drop design. Interface is basically just a window with a menu and some forms Uses MSSQL database (SQL2005 server) to store data and ODBC driver to query, data was migrated from excel before this system, and before excel it was handled, calculated and written by hand and paper Users work in Microsoft XP environment (and up) Their main problem is that they can't adjust and calculate prices, can't add new carton types etc, correctly anymore because they can't (or rather, they don't know how to) touch the data on the server. I suggested 3 possible solutions Attempt to patch the current system Create a fresh new interface (preferably similar environment, VB.net or VB based) Bring it back to an Excel solution, considering it is such a small system There might be more options, but these are the ones I could think of. My questions are What should I recommend and why? What is or could be the pros and cons of these alternatives? Are there other (possibly better) alternatives?

• Developing a TCK: Spec Lead Call for Spec Leads 20 December

  The JCP Program will be hosting a Spec Lead call on 20 December on the topic of developing a Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK).  A Technology Compatibility Kit is a required output of a JSR at Final Release, along with the Specification and Reference Implementation (RI).   The TCK must test all aspects of a specification that impact how compatible an implementation of that specification would be, such as the public API and all mandatory elements of the specification. The Reference Implementation is required to pass the TCK. A vendor's implementation of a specification is only considered compatible if the implementation passes the TCK fully and completely.  The TCK is used to test implementations of the Final Specification to make sure that they are fully compatible. Security Analysts >> CISOs >> CIOs - the focus is coming from the risk and security office - so what does that mean for the IT teams? 2. How important is mobile policy? 77% said "Critical" or "Extremely Important" - so this means mobile access policies will get a lot of attention.  3. When asked about the state of their mobile policies: Over 35% said they didn't have a mobile access policy and another 35% said they simply ask their employees to sign a usage agreement.  So basically ~70% of the respondents were not actively managing or monitoring mobile access. • OBIEE lifetime support

  I just received an email from the Development team explaining the detailed dates when what version of OBIEE will be in what stage of Support. So again for all readers who have not had the chance to look at the  lifetime Support policy from Oracle, I'll  try to explain this in easy words: Any major release is in "error correction support" by Development for another 12 months following the availability of a new major release. Examples: 11.1.1.5.0 was released in May 2011.  => So 11.1.1.3.0 (the version before that) went out of patching support ( or "error correction support" ) 12 months after that, i.e. June 2012. Note here: It went out of error correction support, which means Development will not fix bugs, or issue patches after that. The product can still be supported by Technical Support ( as "best effort support" ).So - Questions will still be answered, but there will not be fixes to bugs or glitches.11.1.1.6.0 was released in February 2012.  => Therefore 11.1.1.5.0 will be out of patching support / error correction support starting March 2013. I hope this clears up some of the questions/concerns that you might have had. Oh, and of course to mention the latest and recommended version to use: 11.1.1.6.0 + 11.1.1.6.5 bundle patch is "just what the doctor ordered".

• ADF Logging In Deployed Apps

  Harking back to my series on using the ADF logger and the related  ADF Insider Video, I've had a couple of queries this week about using the logger from Enterprise Manager (EM). I've alluded in those previous materials to how EM can be used but it's evident that folks need a little help.  So in this article, I'll quickly look at how you can switch logging on from the EM console for an application and how you can view the output.  Before we start I'm assuming that you have EM up and running, in my case I have a small test install of Fusion Middleware Patchset 5 with an ADF application deployed to a managed server. Step 1 - Select your Application In the EM navigator select the app you're interested in: At this point you can actually bring up the context ( right mouse click) menu to jump to the logging, but let's do it another way.  Step 2 - Open the Application Deployment Menu At the top of the screen, underneath the application name, you'll find a drop down menu which will take you to the options to view log messages and configure logging, thus: Step 3 - Set your Logging Levels  Just like the log configuration within JDeveloper, we can set up transient or permanent (not recommended!) loggers here. In this case I've filtered the class list down to just oracle.demo, and set the log level to config. You can now go away and do stuff in the app to generate log entries. Step 4 - View the Output  Again from the Application Deployment menu we can jump to the log viewer screen and, as I have here, start to filter down the logging output to the stuff you're interested in.  In this case I've filtered by module name. You'll notice here that you can again look at related log messages. Importantly, you'll also see the name of the log file that holds this message, so it you'd rather analyse the log in more detail offline, through the ODL log analyser in JDeveloper, then you can see which log to download.

• JCP.Next.3 working group meetings have begun

  As mentioned in the blog earlier this week, the third JSR in the JCP.Next effort, JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process, was approved by the JCP EC to continue development earlier this year.  This JSR will modify the Java Specification Participation Agreement (JSPA) as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons, the JCP EC (acting as the Expert Group for this JSR), expects to spend a considerable amount of time working on this JSR. The JSPA is defined by the JCP as "a one-year, renewable agreement between the Member and Oracle. The success of the Java community depends upon an open and transparent JCP program. The first EG working meetings have started and  meeting materials and minutes are available on their Java.net project. Last week an IP Working Group commenced and their meeting minutes and materials will also be available in this location; they anticipate meeting on a weekly basis moving forward.  Also see the JSR 358 issue tracker on java.net.  Right now there are 45 issues being discussed.  Join the JSR 358 java.net project to keep up to date on the latest developments.

There are two main options there: Use the WebSecurity and OAuthWebSecurity API to manage the users and roles Create a web admin using the above APIs Since SimpleMembership runs on top of your database, you can update your users as you would any other data - via EF or even in direct database edits (in development, of course)" “If you want to use an existing ASP.NET Membership Provider in ASP.NET MVC 4, you can't use the new AccountController. You can do a few things:” “Universal Providers do not work with Simple Membership.” ~ this post (look for Bob.at.SBS’s answer) says Universal Providers is not needed for MVC 4 to work in Azure)   I've been trying to figure out the Forms Authentication in MVC4. It's different than the past approach (aspnet_regsql). If you do file new project -> MVC 4 -> internet application, you get a really nice template with the controller and model setup for you. However, the tables are different than using aspnet_regsql and the ASP.Net Configuration tool (WSAT) wasn’t connecting to the data I had (it was creating an App_Data/aspnet.mdf file, which I didn’t see right away). Points of Note The database tables are created in the SimpleMembershipInitializer class, when you first run your app using Entity Framework 5 migration functionality. The tables created are webpages_Membership, webpages_OAuthMembership, webpages_Roles, webpages_UsersInRoles, UserProfile. Web.config settings don’t seem to be needed.   Scott Hanselman on Universal Providers was also useful if not somewhat out dated. Instructions include defining the components, creating and inserting image packages, adding the resources you want to make available in your application, setting the clipping area for you image, and setting the style for your image to create a transparent window. • Adding UCM as a search source in Windows Explorer

  A customer recently pointed out to me that Windows 7 supports federated search within Windows Explorer. This means you can perform searches to external sources such as Google, Flickr, YouTube, etc right from within Explorer. While we do have the Desktop Integration Suite which offers searching within Explorer, I thought it would be interesting to look into this method which would not require any client software to implement. Basically, federated searching hooks up in Windows Explorer through the OpenSearch protocol. A Search Connector Descriptor file is run and it installs the search provider. The file is a .osdx file which is an OpenSearch Description document. It describes the search provider you are hooking up to along with the URL for the query. If those results can come back as an RSS or ATOM feed, then you're all set. So the first step is to install the RSS Feeds component from the UCM Samples page on OTN. If you're on 11g, I've found the RSS Feeds works just fine on that version too. Next, you want to perform a Quick Search with a particular search term and then copy the RSS link address for that search result. Here is what an example URL might looks like: http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SCS_FEED&feedName=search_results&QueryText=%28+%3cqsch%3eoracle%3c%2fqsch %3e+%29&SortField=dInDate&SortOrder=Desc&ResultCount=20&SearchQueryFormat= Universal&SearchProviders=server& Now you want to create a new text file and start out with this information: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><OpenSearchDescription xmlns:ms-ose="http://schemas.microsoft.com/opensearchext/2009/"> <ShortName></ShortName> <Description></Description> <Url type="application/rss+xml" template=""/> <Url type="text/html" template=""/> </OpenSearchDescription> Enter a ShortName and Description. The ShortName will be the value used when displaying the search provider in Explorer. In the template attribute for the first Url element, enter the URL copied previously. You will then need to convert the ampersand symbols to '&' to make them XML compliant. Finally, you'll want to switch out the search term with '{searchTerms}'. For the second Url element, you can do the same thing except you want to copy the UCM search results URL from the page of results. That URL will look something like: http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SEARCH_RESULTS&SortField=dInDate&SortOrder=Desc&ResultCount=20&QueryText=%3Cqsch%3Eoracle%3C%2Fqsch%3E&listTemplateId= &ftx=1&SearchQueryFormat=Universal&TargetedQuickSearchSelection= &MiniSearchText=oracle Again, convert the ampersand symbols and replace the search term with '{searchTerms}'. When complete, save the file with the .osdx extension. It will ask if you want to add the search connector to Windows. Click Add and it will add it to the Searches folder in your user folder as well as your Favorites. Now just click on the search icon and in the upper right search box, enter your term. As you are typing, it begins executing searches and the results will come back in Explorer. Now when you double-click on an item, it will try and download the web viewable for viewing. You also have the ability to save the search, just as you would in UCM. And there is a link to Search On Website which will launch your browser and go directly to the search results page there. And with some tweaks to the RSS component, you can make the results a bit more interesting. It supports the Media RSS standard, so you can pass along the thumbnail of the documents in the results. To enable this, edit the rss_resources.htm file in the RSS Feeds component. In the std_rss_feed_begin resource include, add the namespace 'xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' to the rss definition: <rss version="2.0" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:sy="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/syndication/" xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/"> Next, in the rss_channel_item_with_thumb include, below the closing image element, add this element: </images> <media:thumbnail url="<$if strIndexOf(thumbnailUrl, "@t") > 0 or strIndexOf(thumbnailUrl, "@g") > 0 or strIndexOf(thumbnailUrl, "@p") > 0$><$rssHttpHost$><$thumbnailUrl$><$elseif dGif$><$HttpWebRoot$>images/docgifs/<$dGif$><$endif$>" /> <description> This and lots of other tweaks can be done to the RSS component to help extend it for optimum use in Explorer.
