• Python regular expression implementation details

  A question that I answered got me wondering: How are regular expressions implemented in Python? What sort of efficiency guarantees are there? Is the implementation "standard", or is it subject to change? I thought that regular expressions would be implemented as DFAs, and therefore were very efficient (requiring at most one scan of the input string). Laurence Gonsalves raised an interesting point that not all Python regular expressions are regular. (His example is r"(a+)b\1", which matches some number of a's, a b, and then the same number of a's as before). This clearly cannot be implemented with a DFA. So, to reiterate: what are the implementation details and guarantees of Python regular expressions? It would also be nice if someone could give some sort of explanation (in light of the implementation) as to why the regular expressions "cat|catdog" and "catdog|cat" lead to different search results in the string "catdog", as mentioned in the question that I referenced before.

I have tried to use pattern.finditer(ifile) like this: for match in pattern.finditer(ifile): print match ... just to see if it works, but the finditer method requires a string or buffer. I have also tried this method, but can't get it to work matches = [m.groups() for m in pattern.finditer(ifile)] Any idea?

• C# WebClient only downloads partial html

  Hi, I am working on some scraping app, i wanted to try to get it to work but ran into a problem. I have replaced the original scraping destination in the below code with googles webpage, just for testing. It seems that my download doesnt get everything, i note that the body and the html tags are missing their close tags. How do i get it to download everything? • Finding App Id under .ipa or .app

  I'm building an application that search and recognizes any iPhone apps that user has in his/her computer. I would like to know a way to "extract" the id of the application from the .ipa file. I was trying to do the recognition using only the App File Name, but I discovered that the File Name is not the name of the app in Apple Store. Live Poker 6K Free by Zynga != Live Poker 3.7.ipa The id i'm talking about is the app id, like in, http://itunes.apple.com/app/live-poker-6k-free-by-zynga/id354901953?mt=8 the id is 354901953. Does any body has a clue how can I manage to find this information?

• Goodbye XML&hellip; Hello YAML (part 2)

  Part 1 After I explained my motivation for using YAML instead of XML for my data, I got a lot of people asking me what type of tooling is available in the .Net space for consuming YAML.  In this post, I will discuss a nice tooling option as well as describe some small modifications to leverage the extremely powerful dynamic capabilities of C# 4.0.  I will be referring to the following YAML file throughout this post Recipe: Title: Macaroni and Cheese Description: My favorite comfort food. Author: Brian Genisio TimeToPrepare: 30 Minutes Ingredients: - Name: Cheese Quantity: 3 Units: cups - Name: Macaroni Quantity: 16 Units: oz Steps: - Number: 1 Description: Cook the macaroni - Number: 2 Description: Melt the cheese - Number: 3 Description: Mix the cooked macaroni with the melted cheese Tooling It turns out that there are several implementations of YAML tools out there.  The neatest one, in my opinion, is YAML for .NET, Visual Studio and Powershell.  It includes a great editor plug-in for Visual Studio as well as YamlCore, which is a parsing engine for .Net.  It is in active development still, but it is certainly enough to get you going with YAML in .Net.  Start by referenceing YamlCore.dll, load your document, and you are on your way.  Here is an example of using the parser to get the title of the Recipe: var yaml = YamlLanguage.FileTo("Data.yaml") as Hashtable; var recipe = yaml["Recipe"] as Hashtable; var title = recipe["Title"] as string; In a similar way, you can access data in the Ingredients set: var yaml = YamlLanguage.FileTo("Data.yaml") as Hashtable; var recipe = yaml["Recipe"] as Hashtable; var ingredients = recipe["Ingredients"] as ArrayList; foreach (Hashtable ingredient in ingredients) { var name = ingredient["Name"] as string; } You may have noticed that YamlCore uses non-generic Hashtables and ArrayLists.  This is because YamlCore was designed to work in all .Net versions, including 1.0.  Everything in the parsed tree is one of two things: Hashtable, ArrayList or Value type (usually String).  This translates well to the YAML structure where everything is either a Map, a Set or a Value.  Taking it further Personally, I really dislike writing code like this.  Years ago, I promised myself to never write the words Hashtable or ArrayList in my .Net code again.  They are ugly, mostly depreciated collections that existed before we got generics in C# 2.0.  Now, especially that we have dynamic capabilities in C# 4.0, we can do a lot better than this.  With a relatively small amount of code, you can wrap the Hashtables and Array lists with a dynamic wrapper (wrapper code at the bottom of this post).  The same code can be re-written to look like this: dynamic doc = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); var title = doc.Recipe.Title; And dynamic doc = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); foreach (dynamic ingredient in doc.Recipe.Ingredients) { var name = ingredient.Name; } I significantly prefer this code over the previous.  That’s not all… the magic really happens when we take this concept into WPF.  With a single line of code, you can bind to the data dynamically in the view: DataContext = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); Then, your XAML is extremely straight-forward (Nothing else.  No static types, no adapter code.  Nothing): <StackPanel> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Title}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Description}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Author}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.TimeToPrepare}" /> <TextBlock Text="Ingredients:" FontWeight="Bold" /> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Recipe.Ingredients}" Margin="10,0,0,0"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Quantity}" /> <TextBlock Text=" " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Units}" /> <TextBlock Text=" of " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Name}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> <TextBlock Text="Steps:" FontWeight="Bold" /> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Recipe.Steps}" Margin="10,0,0,0"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Number}" /> <TextBlock Text=": " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Description}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> </StackPanel> This nifty XAML binding trick only works in WPF, unfortunately.  Silverlight handles binding differently, so they don’t support binding to dynamic objects as of late (March 2010).  This, in my opinion, is a major lacking feature in Silverlight and I really hope we will see this feature available to us in Silverlight 4 Release.  (I am not very optimistic for Silverlight 4, but I can hope for the feature in Silverlight 5, can’t I?) Conclusion I still have a few things I want to say about using YAML in the .Net space including de-serialization and using IronRuby for your YAML parser, but this post is hopefully enough to see how easy it is to incorporate YAML documents in your code. • Visual Studio "Find" results in "No files were found to look in. Find stopped progress."

  Sometimes while developing in Visual Studio IDE, when you use "Find in Files" dialog to find something, the search fails and you will see the following message in the "Find Results" window. "No files were found to look in. Find stopped progress." Once this message shows-up all the subsequent searches will result in the same message. Nothing fixes the problem including restarting computer except Pressing "Ctrl + ScrLk". Does anyone know what causes VisualStudio to get into this state and is there a setting to permanently prevent it from happening?

  Just to clarify by specifying sth like VARCHAR(45) means it can take up to max 45 characters? I rmb I heard from someone a few years ago that the number in the parathesis doesn't refer to the no of characters, then the person tried to explain to me sth quite complicated which i don't understand n forgot alr. And what is the difference btn CHAR and VARCHAR? I did search ard a bit and see that CHAR gives u the max of the size of the column and it is better to use it if ur data has a fix size and use VARCHAR if ur data size varies. But if it gives u the max of the size of the column of all the data of this col, isn't it better to use it when ur data size varies? Esp if u don't know how big is ur data size gg to be. VARCHAR needs to specify the size (CHAR don't really need right?), isn't it more troublesome?

• Visual Studio Team System 2008 - messy formatting/control characters/marks in source code

  Hi, I don't know what I did but somehow the IDE has started displaying a green dot whenever I press spacebar and a green arrowhead whenever I press TAB. The source has become littered with these characters all over and I am finding it very difficult to code in the presence of so many formatting marks. I have tried to search a solution on Google but couldn't perhaps enter the right keywords so haven't been able to fix the behavior. Is there any way I can stop VS2008 IDE from littering my source code with these green dots and arrowheads whenever I press spacebar/tab? I would be really thankful for this help. Thanks, -AL

I'd like to remove the blank lines. Beyond writing my own tool to seek out and remove the extra line, is there a way to do this, perhaps, using RegEx-Fu in the Search and Replace dialog?

• best way to store 1:1 user relationships in relational database

  What is the best way to store user relationships, e.g. friendships, that must be bidirectional (you're my friend, thus I'm your friend) in a rel. database, e.g. MYSql? I can think of two ways: Everytime a user friends another user, I'd add two rows to a database, row A consisting of the user id of the innitiating user followed by the UID of the accepting user in the next column. Row B would be the reverse. You'd only add one row, UID(initiating user) followed by UID(accepting user); and then just search through both columns when trying to figure out whether user 1 is a friend of user 2. Surely there is something better?

I would like some suggestions on what would be the best data structure for representing, on disk, a large data set of time series data. The main priority is speed of insertion, with other priorities in decreasing order; speed of retrieval, size on disk, size in memory, speed of removal. I have seen that B+ trees are often used in database because of their fast search times, but how about for fast insertion times? Is a linked list really the way to go? • Sql Server Service Broker Conversation Groups

  Can someone explain conversation groups in service broker? Currently, I'm using service broker to send messages from one SQL server to another. On the sending server, I'm trying to correlate the messages so they are processed in serial on the receiving side. Based on the documentation, conversation groups seem to be a perfect fit for this, but on the receiving server, the messages get assigned to a different conversation group from the one I specified when sending the message. I've search around the web and saw that this behavior seems to be intended (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/sqlservicebroker/thread/baf48074-6804-43ab-844a-cb28a6dce02b/), but then I'm confused about the usefulness of the syntax from (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178624.aspx) WAITFOR( GET CONVERSATION GROUP @conversation_group_id FROM [dbo].[ReceiveQueue] ) If the conversation group doesn't come across with the message from the sender and messages sent with the same conversation group id don't have the same conversation group id on the receive side, what's the point of the code above?

  Hi, I'm a little confused as to how i can delete a parent node of something which i can find via an xpath search: $xml = simplexml_load_file($filename); $data = $xml->xpath('//items/info[item_id="' . $item_id . '"]'); $parent = $data[0]->xpath("parent::*"); unset($parent); So, it finds the item id, no problems there - but the unset isnt getting rid of this <items> node. All i want to do is remove the <items>...</items> for this product. Obviously, there are loads of <items> nodes in the xml file so it cant do unset($xml->data->items) as that would delete everything. Any ideas much appreciated :-)

Several parts of the code use things like: TRY { ... do stuff } CATCH_ALL(e) { ... issue a warning } END_CATCH_ALL; What's the point of these macros? What benefit do they offer over the built-in try/catch? I've tried googling this, but "try vs TRY" is hard to search for.

  I have heard that Ctypes can cause crashes (or stop errors) in Python and windows. Should I stay away from their use? Where did I hear? It was back when I tried to control various aspects of windows, automation, that sort of thing. I hear of swig, but I see Ctypes more often than not. Any danger here? If so, what should I watch out for? I did search for ctype pro con python.

  Is there a mechanism, or any additional tools that I can make use of to bulk import 301 redirect rules into an IIS6.0 web application? I want to be able to 301 redirect some old .htm pages to their new home on a CMS to ensure the current search index entries resolve OK and don't 404, but there are roughly ~50 pages. The only way I've found to achieve this is to create dummy .htm files and then right click on the file-File tab-Redirect to a URL radio button within the IIS MMC snapin, which is a little laborious over the number of pages.
