  • Choosing an alternative ( visual basic) high level programming language

    I used to be visual basic 6 programmer, i was pleased with visual basic : it is high level language that do stuff fast,easy to learn, easy to do stuff in,you can drag and drop stuff to the form and write your code,it is simply amazing.however microsoft buried VB6 and pointed us to VB.NET which is so different that it is not the old VB anymore.I didn't like what microsoft did and would like to look somewhere AWAY from microsoft and from any other proprietary language . I would like to look into a similar language that is easy,cross platform (windows / Linux), object oriented, visual design, non proprietary and compile (for some guarding against reverse engineering). i am freelancer so the choice is entirely mine,i don't care about performance of programs, the time taken to develop a given programs is much more important. desktop / database / GUI /networking programming is what i am looking for. so any such language offered by our open source community ? thank you so much

  • How to learn a new programming language? And how to choose the appropriate language?

    Unfortunately my last question was closed, so I reformulated the question: I know this question was here a lot of times and can't be answered at all, but im not looking for a single name, but rather for an advice in my situation. I learned programming with Java and now I'm developing in Java for more or less 5 years (at the university) and I thinks my programming skills their are really ok/average. I have also small experience in C/C++ and C#. Now I have some spare time and I'd like to learn a new language or deepen the knowledge of Java/C/C++. But how to choose the right language to learn? I'd like to learn a language which will be usefull in the future concerning working in a software development business? I know there is no single answer, but I'm sure you could mention some languages that are more usefull than others. And what's the best way to learn such a language efficiently (bearing in mind that one has already learned some other languages)? Just doing tutorials? Or trying to implement a project? Trying to move a Java project to the new language?

    I cant finish Apache2 install, also cannot remove it. It has blocked my dpkg, now I cant get no installations in or out. I even tried distro upgrade, but it did still has broken dpkg..     I run yum install php-devel and it returns this. Typically I'd just run it with --skip-broken, but when I do, it still doesn't do the trick. I need to install this for something I'm trying to do. I do remember upgrading to PHP 5.4 and our entire infrastructure coming down due to it requiring PHP 5.3, so I downgraded as quick as possible to get everything back running and that may contribute to the issue. If you have any idea why this is happening and how I could get the package on the system while remaining on PHP 5.3, please let me know. Thanks.

    I have a web service that is working fine in one environment but not in another. The web service gets document meta data from SharePoint, it running on a server where I cant debug but with logging I confirmed that the method enters and exits successfully. What could be the reason for the errors?     I wonder what is a correct step by step logic of exporting scene with baked occlusion (Culling data) for loading that scene at runtime (on fly from the internet for example))? So currently my plan looks like this: I create prefabs Place them onto my scene (into Hierarchy) (say create 20 buffolows and some hourses and some buildings) Create empty prefab and drag all my scene objects from hierarchy onto it Export prefab So generally I put all my scene objects into one large prefab and export it but it seems that all objects that were marked as static get this property turned off when loading them at runtime and so no Frustrum Culling, and no Occlusion culling happens. So I wonder what is a correct way of exporting Sceen + Objecrts + Occlusion (and onther culing) data for future load of such scene at runtime? I wonder about current 3.5.2 Pro and future 4 Pro versions of U3D.

I keep getting the following error: System.Security.VerificationException: Operation could destabilize the runtime When I run a method that uses a linq statement to return an array I get this error, but only on my test server, which is windows server 2008. The error is "Unknown runtime error number: -2146827687" but this error in a GWT module is throws always, in other gwt modules with a label attached to the panel the error there isn't. The layout of panel is a GridFormLayout developed by me.     I am writing a WPF program in C# in which I have a ListView for which the columns will be populated at runtime. I would like to use a custom DataTemplate for the GridViewColumn objects in the ListView. In the examples I have seen where the number of columns is fixed in advance, a custom DataTemplate is often created using something like the XAML below. <DataTemplate x:Key="someKey"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=FirstName}" /> </DataTemplate> This DataTemplate could also later be assigned to GridViewColumn.CellTemplate in the code-behind by calling FindResource("someKey"). However, this alone is of no use to me, because in this example the Path element is fixed to FirstName. Really I need something where I can set the Path in code. It is my impression that something along these lines may be possible if XamlReader is used, but I'm not sure how in practice I would do this. Any solutions are greatly appreciated.

    I'm trying to debug some STL based C++ code in gdb. The code has something like int myfunc() { std::map<int,int> m; ... } Now in gdb, inside myfunc using "print m" gives something very ugly. What I've seen recommended is compiling something like void printmap( std::map<int,int> m ) { for( std::map<int,int>::iterator it = ... ) { printf("%d : %d", it->first, it->second ); } } Then in gdb doing (gdb) call printmap( m ) This seems like a good way to handle the issue... but can I put printmap into a seperate object file (or even dynamic library) that I then load into gdb at runtime rather than compiling it into my binary - as recompiling the binary every time I want to look at another STL variable is not fun .. while compiling and loading a single .o file for the print routine may be acceptable.

    Is is posable to disable selected automated tests at runtime? I'm using VSTS and rhino mocks and have some intergation tests that require an external dependancy to be installed (MQ). Not all the developers on my team have this installed. Currently all the tests that require MQ inherit from a base class that checks if MQ is installed and if is not sets the test result to inconclusive. This works as it stops the tests from running, but marks the test run as unsuccseessful and can hide other failures. Any ideas?

    Using vs2008 c#. Howdy, Ive got an application where im trying to decide if i should use the Crystal reports or the Report viewer that comes with the visual studio install. My issue is that while it will run fine on my development machine, a lot of the machines the application will be deployed to in remote locations WONT have the runtime for either crystal reports or the report viewer installed. therefore if i build an application using either of these, and prevent user access to the reports only on the machines that do NOT have the runtimes, can the application run ok, or should i expect crazy errors on install and such Any advice appreciated.

    I have an AjaxControlToolkit accordion control that i'm trying to load panes at runtime. When I click a button inside a listview, it should add a new pane to the accordion control. Here is the code that adds the pane in the onitemcommand event within the listview var pane = new AccordionPane { ID = key }; pane.HeaderContainer.Controls.Add(new LiteralControl(label.Text)); pane.ContentContainer.Controls.Add(LoadControl("~/UserControls/Covers/" + e.CommandArgument + ".ascx")); accordion.Panes.Add(pane); And this will successfully show a webcontrol inside the accordion control. But when I click on another button in the listview, the accordion is reset and it only shows the new pane instead of appending a new pane. Is there any way to keep the previous pane visible across postbacks like this? By the way, each of the webcontrols that are loaded in the accordion have input fields that will need to be persisted across postbacks as well. thanks!

    I have a ClickOnce deployment where i have a INI-settings file on the network file with "global" settings that is supposed to affect the program on all client computers. The problem i have is that i whant to have the Database connectionString stored in this INI file and have it read and stored in the My.Settings ConnectionString at program startup. How do i do this? [EDIT] I got rid of the error by using the My.Settings("ConnectionString") = "Source=server;Initial Catalog=database;Integrated Security=True" in another place then the the eventtriggerd settingsLoaded method i created.. The problem is that even though the connectionstring semes to be the right, the program still connects to the "default" database that is typed in to the app.config file??

    Hello, I need to generate code for a method at runtime. It's important to be able to run arbitrary code and have a docstring.     As expected, the compiler (VisualStudio 2008) will give a warning warning C4715: 'doSomethingWith' : not all control paths return a value when compiling the following code: int doSomethingWith(int value) { int returnValue = 3; bool condition = false; if(condition) // returnValue += value; // DOH return returnValue; } int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { int foo = 10; int result = doSomethingWith(foo); return 0; } But the program runs just fine. The return value of function doSomethingWith() is 0. Is is just undefined behavior, or is there a certain rule how the result value is created/computed at runtime. What happens with non-POD datatypes as return value?
