• Help with SQL server stack dump

  Hi guru's We're running SQL 2005 standard SP2 on a 4cpu box. Suddenly it crashdumps, after which all pooled connections are invalid and it goes into admin-only mode (only sa can connect) The short stackdump is below. • Marshal.StringToCoTaskMemAnsi converting non-Latin characters when sending raw data to a printer

  For sending raw data to a thermal DATAMAX printer I'm using RawPrinterHelper class from this Microsoft KB article. When a string sent to printer contains only Latin characters, everything is OK. But non-Latin, in my case Russian characters in a string, are not printed correct. I think the problem is in using Marshal.StringToCoTaskMemAnsi method for converting the string: public static bool SendStringToPrinter(string szPrinterName, string szString) { IntPtr pBytes; Int32 dwCount; // How many characters are in the string? dwCount = szString.Length; // Assume that the printer is expecting ANSI text, and then convert // the string to ANSI text. pBytes = Marshal.StringToCoTaskMemAnsi(szString); // Send the converted ANSI string to the printer. SendBytesToPrinter(szPrinterName, pBytes, dwCount); Marshal.FreeCoTaskMem(pBytes); return true; } Just to note, Russian characters in the string are put in hex format, like "\x83", but nevertheless the method doesn't put this hex value in unmanaged memory as it is, but converts it, I think, according with ANSI code page to a character and then printer can not read it correctly. If I try to compose a file, using Hex editor and put correct hex values in place of non-Latin characters and then send the file to a printer using another method from the same class SendFileToPrinter, everything, including Russian characters is printed correctly. How in this case the problem with sending string, containing non-Latin characters, could be solved?

  After spending a miserable month with MySQL/.NET/EntityFramework, my findings: Support for Entity Framework is VERY primitive, please use it for student-subjects type of database. Kindly do not consider it using for serious development as they ARE STILL unable to sort out VERY BASIC things like: it DOES NOT support unsigned stuff it DOES NOT support unsigned columns as FK; if you try, it gives you a beautiful exception; "The specified value is not an instance of a valid constant type\r\nParameter name: value" [http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=44801] blob cannot store more then few KB; cannot compare null object with a column with a LEGAL null value [http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=49936] they are unable to write VERY PRIMITIVE check to return date as null if value in column is 0000-00-00 00:00:00 if you use Visual Studio; sorry; mysql/sun guys hate Microsoft, they will NOT LET you import more then two or three tables (for Micky Mouse type of tables, they allow five; but thats it) - if you try, it will throw TIME OUT error on your face ... unless you are smart enough to change the connection time in connection string Anyone who would like to add in above list? WISH I would have seen a list like this before I selected MySQL :(

• Why does my Sax Parser produce no results after using InputStream Read?

  Hello, I have this piece of code which I'm hoping will be able to tell me how much data I have downloaded (and soon put it in a progress bar), and then parse the results through my Sax Parser. If I comment out basically everything above the //xr.parse(new InputSource(request.getInputStream())); line and swap the xr.parse's over, it works fine. But at the moment, my Sax parser tells me I have nothing. Is it something to do with is.read (buffer) section? • Print raw data to a thermal-printer using .NET

  I'm trying to print out raw ascii data to a thermal printer. I do this by using this code example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322091 but my printer prints always only one character and this not until I press the form feed button. If I print something with notepad the printer will do a form feed automatically but without printing any text. The printer is connected via usb over a lpt2usb adapter and Windows 7 uses the "Generic - Generic / Text Only" driver. Anyone knows what is going wrong? How is it possible to print some words and do some form feeds? Are there some control characters I have to send? And if yes: How do I send them? • How to display NotifyIcon and SSDP Service running during AutoLogon

  I've got an application (that is targetting .Net Framework 2.0) that is running on startup of the System, and I'm trying to get a NotifyIcon to display. When my program starts up when a user either Runs it normally or is started as a child process after the system has already logged on everything is fine. If my application starts up as the system is performing an AutoLogon using POSReady2009 (basically XP with Single User set). Then the NotifyIcon never becomes active. If you subsequently check (in a timer) the .Visible of the Icon at any point later it always reports that it is visible = true. If you disable the SSDPSrv and restart the Computer, the Icon displays correctly. I have a sneaking suspicion this is related to .Net 3.5sp1 installed over the top of a .Net 2 system. Is there some process that I should be following to ensure that my NotifyIcon is always available to the user. I have setup RegisterWindowMessage("TaskbarCreated") but I don't get this message called, except when you forcilbly Kill Explorer.exe and restart it. Even so, a NotifyIcon interally registers for these notifications anyway, so it shouldn't be required. I'm happy to stall the startup of my program, but once the program starts up, I expect that the icon shows correctly. If there is a KB article that I cannot find detailing this I'd be happy with that too.

• Retrieving many huge sized EPS files and converting them to JPEG in ASP.NET application

  I have many (600) EPS files(300 KB - 1 MB) in database. In my ASP.NET application (using ASP.NET 4.0) I need to retrieve them one by one and call a web service which would convert the content to the JPEG file and update the database (JPEGContent column with the JPEG content). However, retrieving the content for 600 of them itself takes too long from the SQL management studio itself (takes 5 minutes for 10 EPS contents). So I have two issues:- 1) How to get the EPS content ( unfortunately, selecting certain number of content is not an option :-( ):- Approach 1:- foreach(var DataRow in DataTable.Rows) { // get the Id and byte[] of EPS // Call the web method to convert EPS content to JPEG which would also update the database. } or foreach(var DataRow in DataTable.Rows) { // get only the Id of EPS // Hit database to get the content of EPS // Call the web method to convert EPS content to JPEG which would also update the database. } or Any other approach? 2) Converting EPS to JPEG using a web method for 600 contents. Ofcourse, each call would be a long running operation. Would task parellel library (TPL) be a better way to achieve this? Also, is doing the entire thing in a SQL CLR function a good idea?

• MySql: Problem when using a temporary table

  Hi, I'm trying to use a temporary tables to store some values I need for a query. The reason of using a temporary table is that I don't want to store the data permanently so different users can modify it at the same time. That data is just stored for a second, so I think a temporary table is the best approach for this. The thing is that it seems that the way I'm trying to use it is not right (the query works if I use a permanent one). • ASP.NET 2.0 RijndaelManaged encryption algorithm vs. FIPS

  I'm running into an issue with an ASP.NET 2.0 application. Our network folks just upped our security, and now I get the floowing error whenever I try to access the app: "This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms." I've done a little research, and it sounds like ASP.NET uses the RijndaelManaged AES encryption algorithm to encrypt the ViewState of pages... and RijndaelManaged is on the list of algorithms that aren't FIPS compliant. We're certainly not explicitly calling any encryption algorithm... much less anything on the non-compliant list. This ViewState business makes sense to me, I guess. The thing I can't muddle out, though, is what to do about it. I've found a KB article that suggests using a web.config setting to specify a different algorithm... but either that didn't stick, or that algorithm isn't up to snuff, either. So: 1) Is the RijndaelManaged / ViewState thing actually the problem? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? 2) How to I specify what algorithm to use instead of RijndaelManaged? I've got a list of algorithms that are and aren't compliant; I'm just not sure where to plug that information in. Thanks! Richard

• Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

  i know this is very much a "how long is a piece of string" type of question, however i have recently inherited a couple of applications that run as windows services, and i am having problems providing a gui (accessible from a context menu in system tray) with both of them. before you ask, the reason why we need a gui for a windows service is in order to be able to re-configure the behaviour of the windows service(s) without resorting to stopping/re-starting. my code works fine in debug mode, and i get the context menu come up, and everything behaves correctly etc. when i install the service via "installutil" using a named account (i.e., not Local System Account), the service runs fine, but doesn't display the icon in the system tray (i know this is normal behaviour because i don't have the "interact with desktop" option). here is the problem though - when i choose the "LocalSystemAccount" option, and check the "interact with desktop" option, the service takes AGES to start up for no obvious reason, and i just keep getting "Could not start the ... service on Local Computer. Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". incidentally, i increased the windows service timeout from the default 30 seconds to 2 minutes via a registry hack (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824344, search for TimeoutPeriod in section 3), however the service start up still times out. my first question is - why might the "Local System Account" login takes SOOOOO MUCH LONGER than when the service logs in with the non-LocalSystemAccount, causing the windows service time-out? what's could the difference be between these two to cause such different behaviour at start up? secondly - taking a step back, all i'm trying to achieve, is simply a windows service that provides a gui for configuration - I'd be quite happy to run using the non-Local System Account (with named user/pwd), if I could get the service to interact with the desktop (that is, have a context menu available from the system tray). is this possible, and if so how? any pointers to the above questions would be very much appreciated! thanks in advance for your help.

  I'm trying to add plugins to my game and what I'm trying to implement is this: Plugins will be either mine or 3rd party's so I would like a solution where crashing of the plugin would not mean crashing of the main application. Methods of plugins are called very often (for example because of drawing of game objects). What I've found so far: 1) http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/pluginsincsharp.aspx - simple concept that seems like it should work nicely. Since plugins are used in my game for every round I would suffice to add the Restart() method and if a plugin is no longer needed Unload() method + GC should take care of that. 2) http://mef.codeplex.com/Wikipage - Managed Extensibility Framework - my program should work on .NET 3.5 and I don't want to add any other framework separately I want to write my plugin system myself. Therefore this solution is out of question. 3) Microsoft provides: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.addin.aspx but according to a few articles I've read it is very complex. 4) Different AppDomains for plugins. According to Marc Gravell ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/665668/usage-of-appdomain-in-c ) different AppDomains allow isolation. Unloading of plugins would be easy. What would the performance load be? I need to call methods of plugins very often (to draw objects for example). • Writing a JMS Publisher without "public static void main"

  Hi guys, Every example I've seen on the web, e.g. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/docview/jms_to_jms_bridge_activem.aspx, creates a publisher and subscriber with a public static void main method. I don't think that'll work for my web application. I'm learning JMS and I've setup Apache ActiveMQ to run on JBoss 5 and Tomcat 6 (with no glitches). I'm writing a messaging JMS service that needs to send email asynchronously. I've already written a JMS subscriber that receives the message (the class inherits MessageListener). My question is simple: How do I write a publisher that will so that my web applications can call it? Does it have to be published somewhere? My thought is to create a publisher with a no-attribute constructor (in there) and get the MessageQueue Factory, etc. from the JNDI pool (in the constructor). Is my idea correct? How do I subscribe my subscriber to the Queue Receiver? (So far, the subscriber has no constructor, and if I write a constructor, do I always subscribe myself to the Queue receiver?) Thanks for your help, sorry if my terminology is not up to scratch, there are too many java terminologies that I get lost sometimes (maybe a java GPS will do! :-) ) PS Is there a tutorial out there that explains how to write a "better" (better can mean anything, but in my case it's all about performance in high demand requests) JMS Publisher and Subscriber that I can run on Application Server such as JBoss or Glassfish? Don't forget that the JMS application will needs a "guarantee" uptime as many applications will use this.

  In a web app developed in PHP we are generating Quotations and Invoices (which are very simple and of single page) using TCPDF lib. The lib is working just great but it seems to generate very large PDF files. For example in our case it is generating PDF files as large as 4 MB (+/- a few KB). How to reduce this bloating of PDF files generated by TCPDF? • Securely erasing a file using simple methods?

  Hello, I am using C# .NET Framework 2.0. I have a question relating to file shredding. My target operating systems are Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. Possibly Windows Server 2003 or 2008 but I'm guessing they should be the same as the first three. My goal is to securely erase a file. I don't believe using File.Delete is secure at all. I read somewhere that the operating system simply marks the raw hard-disk data for deletion when you delete a file - the data is not erased at all. That's why there exists so many working methods to recover supposedly "deleted" files. I also read, that's why it's much more useful to overwrite the file, because then the data on disk actually has to be changed. Is this true? Is this generally what's needed? If so, I believe I can simply write the file full of 1's and 0's a few times. • Offline iOS web app: loads my manifest, but doesn't work offline

  I'm writing a web app to be used offline on iOS. I've created a manifest, am serving it up as text/cache-manifest, and it usually works fine, when running inside Safari. If I add it as an app to my home screen, then turn on Airplane mode, it can't open the app at all -- I get an error and it offers to close the app. (I thought this was the entire purpose of an offline app!) When I load the app a first time when online, I can see in my logs that it's requesting every page listed in the manifest. If I turn off Airplane mode, and load the app, I can see the first file it's requesting is my main.html file (which is both listed in the manifest, and has the manifest=... attribute). It then requests the manifest, and all my other files, getting 200's for all (and 304's for anything requested a second time during this load). When I load the page in Chrome, and click around, the logs show the only thing it's trying to reach on the server is "/favicon.ico" (which is a 404, and which I don't think iOS Safari tries to load, anyway). All of the files listed in the manifest are valid and served without error. The Chrome inspector lists, under "APPLICATION CACHE", all the cached files I've listed which I expect. The entire set of files is about 50 KB, way under any limit on offline resources that I've found. Is this supposed to work, i.e., am I supposed to be able to create an offline iOS app using only HTML/CSS/JS? And where do I go about figuring out why it's failing to work offline? (Related but doesn't sound quite the same to me, since it's about Safari and not a standalone app: "Can't get a web app to work offline on iPod")

• Window Installer custom action BEFORE any validation

  I wrote a Windows Installer custom action based on the tutorial found here: http://www.codeproject.com/kb/install/msicustomaction.aspx My custom action is killing a background process of a given name which could still be opened by the user. The reason is that I don't want users to see the warning that a given EXE is running and must be closed so that setup can continue. This works fine when the MSI passes through the UI sequence as the action is created in "InstallUISequence" table like in the tutorial. However, when the MSI is used silently (right-click and select repair or uninstall), then my custom action isn't executed of course. Where do I have to put my custom action so that it is executed immediately also when run silently? I tried adding it to "InstallExecuteSequence", but the 'app running' warning is still shown. I then tried lowering the sequence number of my custom action to 5, but this also didn't help. Note: I'm using Orca to modify an MSI generated from a Visual Studio setup project. I'm then using the transform file to apply it.

The reason is that I don't want users to see the warning that a given EXE is running and must be closed so that setup can continue. This works fine when the MSI passes through the UI sequence as the action is created in "InstallUISequence" table like in the tutorial. However, when the MSI is used silently (right-click and select repair or uninstall), then my custom action isn't executed of course. Where do I have to put my custom action so that it is executed immediately also when run silently? I tried adding it to "InstallExecuteSequence", but the 'app running' warning is still shown. I then tried lowering the sequence number of my custom action to 5, but this also didn't help. Note: I'm using Orca to modify an MSI generated from a Visual Studio setup project. I'm then using the transform file to apply it.

• Stack Overflow on Marshal.PtrToStructure reading wmv files

  Hi, I'm using a frame grabber class in order to capture and process each frame in a video. The class can be found here: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/graphics/FrameGrabber.aspx I'm having issues with running it, however. When loading the file, it attempts to marshal a video format pointer into a VideoInfoHeader (I'm using DirectShow.Net). The code that does this is as follows: videoInfo = (VideoInfoHeader)Marshal.PtrToStructure(mediaType.formatPtr, typeof(VideoInfoHeader)); When I run this it immediately crashes out of the debugging environment, probably with a stack overflow. When stepping through I can see that the formatPtr always equals 93, though I do not know what to make of this as I am fairly new to marshalling. I have checked that the video runs fine in Windows Media Player. This is essential in finding the dimensions of the video and also the size of the header, which needs to be skipped before the frames can be read. I am running Windows 7 x64. Any help on this would be much appreciated, I must've tried fifteen different frame grabbing techniques.

• Converting a Linq expression tree that relies on SqlMethods.Like() for use with the Entity Framework

  I recently switched from using Linq to Sql to the Entity Framework. One of the things that I've been really struggling with is getting a general purpose IQueryable extension method that was built for Linq to Sql to work with the Entity Framework. This extension method has a dependency on the Like() method of SqlMethods, which is Linq to Sql specific. What I really like about this extension method is that it allows me to dynamically construct a Sql Like statement on any object at runtime, by simply passing in a property name (as string) and a query clause (also as string). Such an extension method is very convenient for using grids like flexigrid or jqgrid. • Serializing MDI Winforms for persistency

  Hello, basically my project is an MDI Winform application where a user can customize the interface by adding various controls and changing the layout. I would like to be able to save the state of the application for each user. I would need to write some sort of a recursive algorithm to save all my controls, what is the best approach to do accomplish that? How would I then restore all the windows, should I use the memento design pattern for that? If I want to implement multiple users later, should I use Nhibernate to store all the object data in a database? I am still trying to wrap my head around the problem and if anyone has any experience or advice I would greatly appreciate it, thanks.

• Json HTTP Module stream issue

  Hey, I have an HTTP Module that I use to clean up the JSON returned by my web service (see http://www.codeproject.com/KB/webservices/ASPNET_JSONP.aspx?msg=3400287#xx3400287xx for an example of this.) Basically it relates to calling cross-domain JSON web services from javascript. There is this JsonHttpModule which uses a JsonResponseFilter Stream class to write out the JSON and the overloaded Write method is supposed to wrap the name of the callback function around the JSON, otherwise the JSON errors out as needing a label. However, if the JSON is really long, the Write method in the Stream class is called multiple times, causing the callback function to incorrectly get inserted midway through the JSON. Is there a way in the Stream class to wrap the callback function around the stream at the end or to specify that it write all of the JSON in 1 Write method instead of in chunks?? • Why do my Sax Parser produce no results after using InputStream Read?

  Hello, I have this piece of code which I'm hoping will be able to tell me how much data I have downloaded (and soon put it in a progress bar), and then parse the results through my Sax Parser. If I comment out basically everything above the //xr.parse(new InputSource(request.getInputStream())); line and swap the xr.parse's over, it works fine. But at the moment, my Sax parser tells me I have nothing. Is it something to do with is.read (buffer) section?
