Are there benefits to defragmenting the Windows registry? Or at least rewrite it in some way so as to take less space? Is there a reliable and safe tool to do this?
I read somewhere that the Ultimate Boot CD can diagnose computer problems. In this case would this program help me get my Windows XP back?
When I turn on the screen and hit "Start Windows Normally" or go to Safe Mode I get a flash of the WinXP logo and then it goes to this error page. Can you tell from this message is it a hardware or software issue?
Hello
When I inserting flash drive of my friend, how can I check that it is safe from infecting me with a viruses?
Autorun.inf. This can be disabled with Shift while inserting or in registry
anything other way of how can trojan get into my comp?
folder.htt - seems to be disabled in modern XP
Considering the default Windows XP SP2-SP3, flash is opened with Explorer.
This '~MntWIM' on my Windows 7 / C:\ drive, is sized: 694 MB (728.418.589 bytes) on harddrive.
It contains 3 subdirectories.
1st = Program Files, containg zero volume
2nd = Users, containing zero volume
3rd = Windows, containing 693 MB (726.823.197 bytes) on harddrive
It all looks a bit useless to me, so question is: Is it safe to delete the lot?
Or does it have an important function there?
Hoping for an answer from which I could lern something.

I have a Dell desktop that is hanging at the Windows XP splash screen and eventually (after about 5 minutes) cycles to a "F1 to retry boot F2 to enter setup utility".
I tried to start the computer in Safe Mode but it eventually cycles to the same "F1, F2" screen.
What are the likely causes and what are the remedies?
If I have multiple sources, each with the same directory tree, but different files in the tree, is it safe to run multiple rsync commands in parallel with the same destination?
Specifically, will there be any race conditions for directory/file creation?
Hi All
My Motherboard has 4 internal SATA ports. I am considering a linux software raid.
I plan to use this for backing up my work movies, music etc
Do I need to spend the money on RAID Level drives? Or am I safe with standard hard drives?
a 2TB Hitatchi 7200 is like $89 at NewEgg where a Samsung F1 RAID 1tb is $150.00
Thoughts?
How much battery would leaving my laptop at "sleep" mode consume? is the consumption low enough so that it would be safe to leave the laptop sleeping at nights regularily and using it tommorow?
What's the recommended period of time for which I should not turn it off, but let it sleep. (for example, if I'll use the computer in a minute - turning it off instead of making it to sleep will definitely not save battery due to the overhead of turning your computer on and off).
I'm upgrading/bootstrapping a desktop with new everything Win7 64bit from Vista 32bit.
I see that IE9 is newly released and start the install.
IE9 Setup requires and offers to close these programs due to overlapping files used.
Firefox
Chrome
Java(TM) Platform SE binary
Java(TM) update scheduler
Skype, Trillian, Winamp, etc.
How safe is this?
I fear getting yet another MS Firefox add-on or toolbar.

I'm curious if it is possible to mount a partition encrypted by cryptsetup with LUKS securely and automatically on Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS.
For example, if I use the key for the encrypted partition, than that key has to be presented on a device that is not encrypted and if someone steals my disk they'll be able to find the key and decrypt the partition.
Is there any safe way to mount an encrypted partition? If not, does anything exist to do what I want?
I would like to have one of my PCs available to the rest of my home network for file sharing and VNC access, but I want to block any Internet traffic going to and from the PC.
In other words, I want all local PCs I have connected to the router functioning as any normal LAN would, but when it comes to the Internet I want one particular PC to be "safe" from the Internet. My guess is that this is some sort of port blocking or some other router function, but I'm not quite sure.
I restarted my system today and after logging in, i could see see nothing but a black screen with mouse pointer. I can start task manager via alt+ctrl+del, Task manager and msconfig show fine but when i try to run 'explorer' nothing happens.
In safe mode everything seems fine.
I do not have any system restore points and repair options from the DVD show "this option is not available for the selected OS"
I've also updated my graphic drivers. Didn't help
Hello,
I'm wondering if /tmp should be owned by root, or rather nobody?
Now with safe mode there are some conflicts, but I am worried about security if I change it to be owned by nobody...
Any advice will be very appreciated.
I am modding out a custom built case/system. I have my motherboard mounted on a metal tray, (Dell did this) has been working great. Not I am modding the case to hold everything and how I want to mount the motherboard on the tray I have a slight gap between the wall of the case and the motherboard/tray.
Can I put a piece of thin anti-static foam/packaging in between the tray and the case?
That is safe right?
I have a windows 7 machine that won't boot completely, even in safe mode. I want to re-image the machine using a generic software image, but would like to keep the user data (including settings etc) that are on there ala Windows Easy Transfer. I can mount the hard disk on another machine - can I use Easy Transfer to transfer the user state of an account on the non-booted OS? Or do I need explore USMT?
Are they encrypted in disk? How? Are they safe, for example, in the event of someone booting from a Live CD and mounting the hard disk?
Which is the encryption key? Is it different in Windows and Linux?
In this recent post about criticism regarding built-in DRM in Intels SandyBridge processors, Intel denies that there's any DRM in Sandybridge processors but goes on to say that
Intel created Intel insider, an extra layer of content protection. Think of it as an armoured truck carrying the movie from the Internet to your display, it keeps the data safe from pirates, but still lets you enjoy your legally acquired movie in the best possible quality
I'm confused now. So far I was thinking DRM is content protection. Can someone shed light on this?
I understand that yum and apt-get operate on top of rpm, so that the data about installed packages in a linux system is responsability of rpm; so that neither yum nor apt-get keep their own data about installed packages . Is this true ? It is safe to install some package using yum and install another (perhaps related) package using apt-get (or viceversa)?
Although I have found this question here in Super-user .. But I am not satisfied with answers there .. I have XP operating system .. Is there any secure way to hide recycle bin from desktop .. I find it very scary (and also difficult and boring) to edit registry keys .. honnestly ..I am seeking some other safe and easier techniques ..thank you for helping
I have recently started using UBUNTU. I am wondering about the point of installing antivirus programs. on SU, I found the opinion that it only detects "windows viruses" and removes them. Is there a point in installing antivirus if I don't have any other OS?
As far as I know, there are no viruses for linux, what about malvare and any other harmful programs? Is it safe not t install any protecting software?
Win7 Home Prem 32-bit
I use Firefox as my browser of choice but my computer came with Internet Explorer pre-installed.
Is it safe to remove Internet Explorer from my computer completely or will this cause any problems?
Is it virus-safe to do quick format of hard drive? I want to format disk that was infected and install windows 7 on it, but I am not sure if Quick Format is secure enough. I am aware that it does not delete data but pointers to it, so I wonder if it is possible that virus activates from that data?
Thanks
Sometimes, users of our software, which connects to SMTP servers, put in a password, but no username. (Or, rather, their browsers' autocomplete specifies a password, but no username.)
Is there any valid SMTP configuration that has a password and no username? Are we safe in ignoring any password when there is no username?
