    I just began with SQL Server 2011 Denali CTP1. The very first thing, I realized that there is no AdventureWorks Sample Database available for Denali. I quickly searched online and reached to Microsoft documentations where it provides information of the how to install (restore) AdventureWorks for SQL Server 2011 for Denali. Download the AdventureWorks from here. Run following script (replace your path of mdf file. CREATE DATABASE AdventureWorks2008R2 ON (FILENAME = 'C:\SQL 11 CTP1\CTP1\AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf') FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG ; When you run above script it will give you following message and you are DONE! File activation failure. The physical file name "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\AdventureWorks2008R2_Log.ldf" may be incorrect. New log file 'C:\SQL 11 CTP1\CTP1\AdventureWorks2008R2_log.ldf' was created. Converting database 'AdventureWorks2008R2' from version 679 to the current version 684.   • Change Password vs. Reset Password-Week 42

    You can find this week’s video here. The differences between change password and reset password are not well known. This week's video walks through the differences and shows them in action. Tune in to find out more about password management. It wasn’t until fairly recently that I realized that there is a difference between a change password and a reset password. One is safe, while the other not so much. I remember when Windows Server 2003 was first released and resetting a user’s password had a distinct warning about irreversible loss of information. I wondered why it wasn’t mentioned in previous operating systems, but I also wondered if it was true since I never personally noticed any impact. It wasn’t until about a year ago when I really dug in to understand this topic better. This week’s lesson covers the differences between a change password and a reset password. In this video we also take a look at it in action so that we have a solid understanding of the topic, and briefly discuss how it works for programming APIs too.   • rsync'd a folder, folder doesn't show up, but free disk space decreased

    I am currently trying to switch from mac to windows/ubuntu dual boot (on 2 seperate internal HDDs), but ran into some trouble restoring my documents. I am not sure all the information below is necessary, but if I knew how to solve it, I wouldn't ask it here. I backed up my mac before buying this laptop on an external HDD with Carbon Copy Cloner. I wanted to put these files on my user folder on my windows HDD, but I could not do that from inside windows (HFS+ format of mac), so I used rsync from inside Ubuntu to copy the documents from the ext hdd to the windows partition. It seemed like it went okay, but from inside windows (and later also Ubuntu) the folder didn't show up.   • Keeping multiple root directories in a single partition

    I'm working out a partition scheme for a new install. I'd like to keep the root filesystem fairly small and static, so that I can use LVM snapshots to do backups without having to allocate a ton of space for the snapshot. However, I'd also like to keep the number of total partitions small. Even with LVM, there's inevitably some wasted space and it's still annoying and vaguely dangerous to allocate more. So there seem to be a couple of different options: Have the partition that will contain bulky, variable files, like /srv, /var, and /home, be the root partition, and arrange for the core system state — /etc, /usr, /lib, etc. — to live in a second partition. These files can (I think) be backed up using a different backup scheme, and I don't think LVM snapshots will be necessary for them. The opposite: putting the big variable directories on the second partition, and having the essential system directories live on the root FS. Either of these options require that certain directories be pointers of some variety to subdirectories of a second partition. I'm aware of two different ways to do this: symlinks and bind-mounts. Is one better than the other for this purpose? Is there another option? Do any of the various Ubuntu installation media/strategies support this style of partition layout?

    SQL Server 2012 has many interesting features but the most talked feature is AlwaysOn. Performance tuning is always a hot topic. I see lots of need of the same and lots of business around it. However, many times when people talk about performance tuning they think of it as a either query tuning, performance tuning, or server tuning. All are valid points, but performance tuning expert usually understands the business workload and business logic before making suggestions. For example, if performance tuning expert analysis workload and realize that there are plenty of reports as well read only queries on the server they can for sure consider alternate options for the same. If read only data is not required real time or it can accept the data which is delayed a bit it makes sense to divide the workload. A secondary replica of the original data which can serve all the read only queries and report is a good idea in most of the cases where there is plenty of workload which is not dependent on the real time data. SQL Server 2012 has introduced the feature of AlwaysOn which can very well fit in this scenario and provide a solution in Read-Only Workloads. Microsoft has recently announced a white paper which is based on absolutely the same subject. I recommend it to read for every SQL Enthusiast who is are going to implement a solution to offload read-only workloads to secondary replicas.   • How to read default key value with dconf or gsettings?

    I would like to know the default value of a dconf/gsettings key. My question is a followup of the question below: Where can I get a list of SCHEMA / PATH / KEY to use with gsettings? What I'm trying to do, so create a script that reads all my personal preferences so I can back them up and restore them. I plan to iterate though all keys, like the script above, see what keys have been changed from their default value, and make a note of these, that can be restored later. I see that the dconf-editor display the keys' default value, but I'd very much like to script this. Also, I don't see how parsing the schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/ can be automated.   • External TV only allows 640x480 using VGA cable

    I have Ubuntu precise installed on a MacBook Pro. When connecting to an external television using a VGA style cable the highest resolution available seems to be 640x480. I'm using the proprietary NVIDEA Accelerated Graphics Driver (version current) and attempting to setup the TV using the nvidea-settings tool. I know all the equipment supports higher resolutions because of the following: Prior to rebuilding my machine with precise, the same TV, cabel & adapter gave higher resolutions The same machine & TV when used with a HDMI cable allows higher resolutions Windows laptops with the same cable & TV are able to achieve higher resolutions I'm not sure what to look for next, there are some similar FAQ questions but I'm not sufficiently familiar with the areas involved to know if these are my issue or are safe to try. Specifically: colord problem & my monitor resolution 640*480 with no other options! - is the closest, but as I'm having no problems with the main laptop monitor I'm not sure the described symptoms apply. I can't work out from the answer or Bumblebee site how to determine if nvidia optimus applies to my laptop. Why isn't my monitor's native resolution appearing as an option? - suggests configuring X by hand, but doesn't entirely match the symptoms I'm seeing

  • Office 2010 Pro Plus Install Failure - Setup cannot find ProPlusr.WW\ProPrWW2.cab

    I'm attempting to install Office 2010 Pro Plus on a netbook running WWindows 7 Starter but the installer prompts for a file location: Setup cannot find ProPlusr.WW\ProPrWW2.cab. Browse to a valid installation source, and then click OK. I checked the installation files and can see that the file is present. I selected the folder and clicked OK, but the installer keeps prompting for the file. Has anyone else encountered this?

Anytime i try to connect to an oracle database using OCI8. I'm not sure that oci8 is install properly. Can someone provide steps for installation of OCI8 using Mamp Pro?

  • Eject disk on Mac Pro running VMWare ESXi

    I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but I'm stuck. I installed VMWare ESXi on a Mac Pro. It's working great! The problem is that you press F12 to eject the disk, and F12 is what you use to shutdown ESX. I can power down, open the case, pull out the CD drive and use a paper clip to force the drawer open, but that's kind of a pain. Any other way to do this?

  • TF2 with Parallels on a MacBook Pro

    I am trying to get TF2 to run under Parallels on my 15'' MacBook Pro, but it is ultimatly failing. To get any decent frame rate I have to put all the setting to low, but even then I get weird graphical "gliches" when I play. Controlls are unresponsive and very laggy as well. I have increased the video memory to 256mb, but that doesn't seem to have helped. What else should I do to make the game playable?

    I have a high end Mac pro, but one thing in is that I'm unhappy with is a DVD drive. It's a Hitachi GH41N. Apple calls it a "superdrive", but it's anything but. The damn thing makes an amazing amount of noise, and isn't too fast either. What I want is a state of the art, fast, quiet DVD reader, preferably not even a burner. What should I get?

  • How to stop Microsoft IntelliType Pro (itype.exe) from interpreting keys

    Intellitype Pro is a nice software that helps me when I'm using my Ms keyboard. When I'm on the road using my laptop's built-in keyboard it interprets some of the keys incorrectly and reacts on them, for instance the Fn + Down Arrow opens Windows Live Messenger (in addition to lowering brightness, which is governed by Dell's driver). I want to stop Intellitype when I'm on the road and reload it when I'm home using the external keyboard. Note: original problem (conflict with itype) posted here.

  • XP Pro SP3: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL on hibernate

    Hey all I'm running XP Pro SP3 on a Late 2007-era 2.2Ghz Macbook. Unfortunately, it's recently started giving me a Blue Screen of Death when I try to hibernate it. It gives me the error "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", and at the bottom says that it's in "hiber_atapi.sys". Most of the Googling I've done thus far turns up things referring to Windows Server 2003, which is obviously less than useful. Anyone know any way to fix this short of a full re-install?

  • XP Pro product keys

    I have a very serious problem. After my XP Home OS was trashed by rogue software - a trial of a thing named TuneUp - I did a clean install, including HDD reformat of Windows XP Pro from a purchased OEM disk. This was Service Pack 2, subsequently upgraded to SP3. I had conclusively mislaid the product key. I had to access data on the machine VERY urgently and I did not then know that under some circumstances Microsoft might agree to provide a replacement. I found what I now know must have been a pirate key on the Net which enabled installation but NOT activation. This of course left me functional but 30 days before meltdown - about 20 days left as I write this. Various retailers want around £100 for retail with matching product key. - this would be paying twice over just to continue use on the same computer. I have neither need nor intention of installing XP Pro on any other computer. I have tried a number of applications claiming to deal with this problem but none of them work. A Belarc profile shows that the pirate key has replaced the original one on the system. I have now found two keys, one of which might be the original, but neither work. I am about to upgrade the HDD and it looks like I will just be passing the problem on when I install XP. I have retrieved a key from the disk, but it is seemingly one Microsoft use in production and does not work. It is 76487-OEM-0015242-71798. The keys I have, one of which which might or might not be the original, are CD87T-HFP4G-V7X7H-8VY68-W7D7M and FC8GV-8Y7G7-XKD7P-Y47XF-P829W (or P819W - I believe it to be the latter, but the box will not accept it). The pirate key which has enabled this install and which is now stored on the system but will not activate is QQHHK-T4DKG-74KG7-BQB9G-W47KG. In these circumstances is it likely that Microsoft would issue a replacement? Is there any other solution? I am not trying to defraud anyone, just to keep on using the product I legitimately bought.   • Macbook Pro keeps ejecting anything I put into the internal optical drive

    My hard disk crashed and I need to reinstall Mac OS X. I restart, insert the installation DVD, press c on the keyboard and the dvd ejects. I've tried different DVDs, even CDs. It's a Macbook Pro from march 2008. Is it broken? Or can it be something more severe like the firewire controller on the motherboard (since I noticed this after my hard drive started to act strangely)? I've ran Apple Hardware Test successfully.

  • Brand new Mac Pro tower fan suddenly runs full-tilt

    My Quad-Core Mac Pro tower is two days old. Initially, I was impressed with how quiet it was compared to my older Macbook Pro. Then on day two, for some reason it started running very loudly. It's not just a "little" loud- my wife walked into the room and asked what the noise was. At first I thought this was just because I was hitting the CPU a bit (importing my iPhone library into iLife '09, and running Eclipse). But now that that's done, Activity Monitor shows a virtually idle CPU; there's nothing running that ought to be causing this, as far as I can tell. I tried powering it off & letting it cool down for a few minutes to no avail; about 10 seconds after powering up, the box gets loud again. I took a look at it with the side cover off, and it seems to be the fan near the top middle, between the power supply and the disk drive. It can't be a dust issue, as the machine is only 2 days old (and I peeked inside anyway just to be sure- clean). I did do a software update over the past 24 hours or so, but I can't say that it occurred immediately after that. I also did a migration of my old apps and data from my MBPro, for what it's worth. Why is it suddenly so loud? How can I monitor the fan speed and various system temperatures? Here's a link to my temps and fan speeds. UPDATE 1: Took it to the Apple Store. They took it in the back (where it's presumably quieter) and ran a fan diagnostic; no problems were found. The guy also told me that it was "a little loud", but normal. I don't buy it. It was virtually silent the first 24 hours I was using it. They would not replace/service it in the store (grrr... that's why I went there, as directed by Apple Care) but said I could get a replacement from the online store, as it was just purchased. I think I will try that. UPDATE 2: Apple is letting me send it back for a replacement. Glad to see so many responses to this question mentioning that the MacPros are usually silent; it's not all just in my head. :-)
