• Openoffice.org: Mouse wheel one row at a time possible?

  I noticed this in Excel, now in OpenOffice.org calc. One small change in mouse wheel leads to 3 rows (line) change. Is it possible to change in Calc OR/AND in Excel? EDIT: Yes, I know about system wide setting about the number of lines for one notch of scroll. But in some applications this setting is interpreted related to size in pixels so scrolling is predictable, but for some like spreadsheet is not. Since the height of line in a cell differ depending of the cell content, with other setting as 1 you will have a guarantee of unpredictable content before your eyes with only one notch.

  In Excel I understand there is no mechanism to customise & re-label the Rows & Columns (i.e. Renaming Col. A to some text like "Item Number" and so on. My question is regarding if it's possible to start Row Numbering at zero, or to determine a pre-allocated number of rows which contain my Headers, and then the first Row with the detail is infact seen as Row 1? Reason for question is I work multiple INternational Projects and we use Excel to trsack alot of activities & issues. Oddly, many people will refer to, for example "Point 7"... Some people mean the ID 7 (which I have the first Column dedicated to ID Number), some mean Excel Row 7, which infact could be really ID 3, or 4 from Col. A.... Any easy way or workaround to just use the Excel Row Numbers but select from when Row 1 is counted?

• Creating a Dynamic DataRow for easier DataRow Syntax

  I've been thrown back into an older project that uses DataSets and DataRows as their entity storage model. I have several applications internally that I still maintain that run just fine (and I sometimes wonder if this wasn't easier than all this ORM crap we deal with with 'newer' improved technology today - but I disgress) but use this older code. For the most part DataSets/DataTables/DataRows are abstracted away in a pseudo entity model, but in some situations like queries DataTables and DataRows are still surfaced to the business layer. Here's an example. I've highlighted the place where this matters. Well, using the new dynamic features in .NET it's actually quite easy to implement the DynamicDataRow class. Creating your own custom Dynamic Objects .NET 4.0 introduced the Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) and opened up a whole bunch of new capabilities for .NET applications. The dynamic type is an easy way to avoid Reflection and directly access members of 'dynamic' or 'late bound' objects at runtime. There's a lot of very subtle but extremely useful stuff that dynamic does (especially for COM Interop scenearios) but in its simplest form it often allows you to do away with manual Reflection at runtime. In addition you can create DynamicObject implementations that can perform  custom interception of member accesses and so allow you to provide more natural access to more complex or awkward data structures like the DataRow that I use as an example here. Bascially you can subclass DynamicObject and then implement a few methods (TryGetMember, TrySetMember, TryInvokeMember) to provide the ability to return dynamic results from just about any data structure using simple property/method access. In the code above, I created a custom DynamicDataRow class which inherits from DynamicObject and implements only TryGetMember and TrySetMember. Once that's done you can access property values that match the field names. Note that types are automatically converted - no type casting is needed in the code you write. The class also automatically converts DbNulls to regular nulls and vice versa which is something that makes it much easier to deal with data returned from a database. What's cool here isn't so much the functionality - even if I'd prefer to leave DataRow behind ASAP -  but the fact that we can create a dynamic type that uses a DataRow as it's 'DataSource' to serve member values. It's pretty useful feature if you think about it, especially given how little code it takes to implement. By implementing these two simple methods we get to provide two features I was complaining about at the beginning that are missing from the DataRow: Direct Property Syntax Automatic Type Casting so no explicit casts are required Caveats As cool and easy as this functionality is, it's important to understand that it doesn't come for free. The dynamic features in .NET are - well - dynamic. Which means they are essentially evaluated at runtime (late bound). Rather than static typing where everything is compiled and linked by the compiler/linker, member invokations are looked up at runtime and essentially call into your custom code. There's some overhead in this. Direct invocations - the original code I showed - is going to be faster than the equivalent dynamic code. However, in the above code the difference of running the dynamic code and the original data access code was very minor. The loop running over 1500 result records took on average 13ms with the original code and 14ms with the dynamic code. Not exactly a serious performance bottleneck. One thing to remember is that Microsoft optimized the DLR code significantly so that repeated calls to the same operations are routed very efficiently which actually makes for very fast evaluation. The bottom line for performance with dynamic code is: Make sure you test and profile your code if you think that there might be a performance issue. However, in my experience with dynamic types so far performance is pretty good for repeated operations (ie. in loops). While usually a little slower the perf hit is a lot less typically than equivalent Reflection work. Although the code in the second example looks like standard object syntax, dynamic is not static code. It's evaluated at runtime and so there's no type recognition until runtime. This means no Intellisense at development time, and any invalid references that call into 'properties' (ie. fields in the DataRow) that don't exist still cause runtime errors. So in the case of the data row you still get a runtime error if you mistype a column name:// this should throw a RuntimeBinderException Assert.AreEqual(entered,drow.enteredd); Dynamic - Lots of uses The arrival of Dynamic types in .NET has been met with mixed emotions. Die hard .NET developers decry dynamic types as an abomination to the language. After all what dynamic accomplishes goes against all that a static language is supposed to provide. On the other hand there are clearly scenarios when dynamic can make life much easier (COM Interop being one place). Think of the possibilities. What other data structures would you like to expose to a simple property interface rather than some sort of collection or dictionary? And beyond what I showed here you can also implement 'Method missing' behavior on objects with InvokeMember which essentially allows you to create dynamic methods. It's all very flexible and maybe just as important: It's easy to do. There's a lot of power hidden in this seemingly simple interface. • Little mysterious RowMatch

  Incidentally this was the first piece of code i ever wrote in ADF.The requirement was we have tax rates which are read from a table.And there can be different type of tax rates called certificates or exceptions based on the rate_type column in the tax rates table.The simplest design i chose was to create an EO on the tax rates table and create two VO's called CertificateVO and ExceptionVO based on the same EO.So far so good.I wrote all the business logic in the EO and completed the model project.The CertificateVO has the query as select * from tax_rates TaxRateEO where rate_type='CERTIFICATE' and similary the ExceptionVO is also built.The UI is pretty simple and it has two tabs called Certificates and Exceptions and each table has a button to create a tax rate.The certificate tab is driven by CertificateVO and exception tab is driven by ExceptionVO.The CertificateVO has default value of rate_type set to 'CERTIFICATE' and ExceptionVO has default value of rate_type to 'EXCEPTION' to default values for new records.So far so good.But on running the UI i noticed a strange thing,When i create a new row in Certificate i see the same row in Exception too and vice-versa.i.e; what ever row i create in one VO it also appears in the second one although it shouldn't be.I couldn't understand the reason for behavior even though an explicit where clause is present.Digging through documentation i found that ADF doesnt apply the where clause to new rows instead it applies something called as RowMatch to them.RowMatch in simple terms is a where condition applied to the VO rows at runtime.Since we had both VO's based on the same EO we have the same entity cache.The filter factor for new rows to be shown in VO at runtime is actually RowMatch than the where clause defined in the VO.The default RowMatch is empty as a result any new row appears in both the VO's since its from same entity cache.The solution to this problem is to use polymorphic view objects which can do the row filter based on configuration or override the getRowMatch() method in the VOImpl and pass the custom where filter instead of default RowMatch.Eg:@Overridepublic RowMatch getRowMatch(){    return new RowMatch("rate_type='CERTIFICATE'");}similarly for ExceptionVO too.With proper RowMatch in place new rows will route themselves to appropriate VO.PS: The behavior(Same row pushed to both VO's from entity cache) is also called as ViewLink Consistency.Try it out!

• Checking validation of entries in a Sudoku game written in Java

  I'm building a simple Sudoku game in Java which is based on a matrix (an array[9][9]) and I need to validate my board state according to these rules: all rows have 1-9 digits all columns have 1-9 digits. each 3x3 grid has 1-9 digits. This function should be efficient as possible for example if first case is not valid I believe there's no need to check other cases and so on (correct me if I'm wrong). When I tried doing this I had a conflict. Should I do one large for loop and inside check columns and row (in two other loops) or should I do each test separately and verify every case by it's own? (Please don't suggest too advanced solutions with other class/object helpers.) • Layout problem: scrollview inside a table, inside a custom dialog

  I have a layout problem which I can't fix. I've looked through many posts on here, and mine seems to be unique enough to post a question. I've created a custom Dialog which programmatically creates a 3 row table. The top and bottom rows have text, while the middle row contains a ScrollView, which contains a LinearLayout. That LinearLayout then contains some number of views (TextView in this example). Since I'm doing this programmatically, see the XML pseudocode below, and the actual code below that. What I would like to happen, is that when the height of the contained content in the LinearLayout gets too big, the ScrollView does its job, and the header and footer TextView's are always visible. The problem is that when the dialog gets big enough, the ScrollView appears to take over the whole dialog, and my footer TextView disappears off the screen. What can I do to make sure the footer TextView never disappears, but the ScrollView can still function? Please could someone help me in constructing a proper unordered list based on my depth,itemid coulumns? Thanks.

  Hi, android is new for me. I am trying to develop a program on 1.5 platform but still in progress, plz guide me. I have some information in following format "item1","description1" "item2","description2" "item3","description3" "item4","description4" . . . . I want to show them on screen, I dont know which is recommended way to do this. After google I found 2 method. but I failed to successfully implement any of one. Method 1 I break both columns data into 2 different arrays, then populate listactivity with array of column 1, enable filter & on clicked event I want to raise alert which should show Text clicked in tilte & desc from 2nd array as msg body based on position. So I tried removing the 2 fields from detailsview and shows error Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'CreatedBy', table 'D:\OAS\OAS\APP_DATA\ASPNETDB.MDF.dbo.OASTest'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. The statement has been terminated. For some reason parameters value is not being set. Can anybody bother to understand this and help?

It appears to be possible with triggers in WPF but we don't have triggers in Silverlight. I tried a TemplatedParent binding but I'm not sure what the TemplatedParent is in this case. We don't have RelativeSource ancestor in Silverlight either. My problem is that there are white spaces about 5px wide between the borders of neighbouring images and I have set the margin to be 0px but it does not work. So what is happening here?

• How to lock a transaction for reading a row and then inserting in Hibernate?

  I have a table with a name and a name_count. So when I insert a new record, I first check what the maximum name_count is for that name. I then insert the record with that maximum + 1. Works great... except with mysql 5.1 and hibernate 3.5, by default the reads don't respect transaction boundaries. 2 of these inserts for the same name could happen at the same time and end up with the same name_count, which completely screws my application! Unfortunately, there are some specific situations where the above is actually fairly common. So what do I do? I assume I can do a pessimistic lock where any row I read is locked for further reading until I commit or roll-back my transaction. Or I can do an optimistic lock with a version column that automatically keeps trying until there are no conflicts? What's the best approach for my situation and how do I specify it in Hibernate 3.5 and mysql 5.1? The above table is massive and accessed frequently.

However, now I need to. The issues I'm having are as follows: Should I use a PROCEDURE, FUNCTION, or TRIGGER? -- Analysis: TRIGGER - I don't think this will work because I can't pass parameters to it, and it would trigger when my application deleted the row too. PROCEDURE or FUNCTION - Not sure. Should I return the number of deleted rows? If so, that would require a FUNCTION right? How should I account for the absence of a logged in user? -- Possibilities: Using either a PROC or FUNC, require the invoker to pass in a valid user_id Require the user to pass in a string with the name Use the CURRENT_USER - meh Hard code the FullName to just be "Database Administrator" Could the name be an optional parameter? I'm rather green when it comes to sprocs. Assuming I went with the PROC/FUNC approach, is it possible to outright restrict regular DELETE calls to this table, yet still allow users to call this PROC/FUNC to do the deletion for them? Ideally the solution is usable by my application as well, so that my code is DRY.

  EDIT: I need to generate a string of 7 chars that is based on the id of the row. So knowing the id of the image and a secret key, i should get the generated string. the string must contain chars from "a" to "z" and numbers from 0 to 9. I have a dir that contains photos like this dir/p3/i2/s21/thumb.jpg the generated string is p3i2s21, then is used to calculate the path of the image. EDIT: currently im using the id of the image: id = 55 then i modify and i get path = 000000055 then path = "000/000/055" then path = "000/000/055/thumb.jpg" ready to use! now i want something more clever because is easy to track down all the images from a server, because ids are sequencial: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... so i must think of creating from 55 a string that is 7 char length and will not overlap with other numbers. I can even transform the 55 to 0000055 and from this convert to a 7 char length string using a secret string. then when i got the secret string and the id i want to get back that 7 char length string. Is this possible? i was thinking about hases but they only uses 0-9 and a-e and are more chars.. :s

• Get last row of many matrices (ASCII text files) and create a new matrix from these rows

  I have over a thousand matrices (6 x 2000, ASCII files, comma delimited) that I generated from MATLAB. I want to get the last row of each matrix / text file and save them in a new matrix / text file. The text files have crazy names so when I load them I can name them whatever. Right now I would do this to achieve my goal: % A = load('crazyname.txt'); % B = load('crazynameagain.txt'); % C = load('crazynameyetagain.txt'); A = [5 5 5; 5 5 5; 1 1 1]; B = [5 5 5; 5 5 5; 2 2 2]; C = [5 5 5; 5 5 5; 3 3 3]; D(1,:)=A(end,:); D(2,:)=B(end,:); D(3,:)=C(end,:); I will create each command (e.g. load, building D step by step) in Excel by combining text cells to create a command. Is there a better way to do this? Could I load / assign the matrices with a name that would better suit them to be used in a for loop? Or is some other MATLAB command that would facilitate this?
