• Cannot Install JDK

  For the life of me, I can't install the JDK on Windows Vista. I keep getting the error, "This Software Has Already Been Installed on Your Computer. Would you like to reinstall it?" Problem is, it's evidently not on my computer, since I can't a) run Eclipse - I get "Could Not Find Java SE Runtime Environment" or b) Find any reference to Java from the command line when typing java -version - I get "Error opening registry key 'Registry/JavaSoft/Java Runtime Environment." Any ideas?

  I'm working on a trouble shooting document for some desktop software that runs in Java. One of the last resort steps is to completely uninstall and reinstall the Java runtime. In Windows XP this can be done via Add/Remove Programs. Is there something equivalent on OSX? Or does reinstalling the runtime overwrite the current version?

In .NET 4, I started receiving a runtime error: Inheritance security rules violated while overriding member: MyBusinessException.GetObjectData(System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationInfo, System.Runtime.Serialization.StreamingContext)'. Security accessibility of the overriding method must match the security accessibility of the method being overriden. I think the issue is caused by the fact that I am overriding GetObjectData. I know one answer for resolving the issue is to set the SecurityRuleSet: [assembly: SecurityRules(SecurityRuleSet.Level1)] This is not an acceptable answer, I'd like to know how to fix the issue without having to relax the default security rules in .NET 4.

  There's something that I don't get it yet in Xtrareport. I have to bind the datasource at runtime and also I have to assign the datasource to the labels programatically. Binding data at runtime is fine ,(and here's my question)I did not get from any examples to how should I bind the datasource to the labels and how to pass the parameter(UserId) from runtime and how to call the report from a webform. For example, I have a table called "User" with 3 fields: UserId, Username and Password. In the report designer I place 3 labels. Then I have a webform where the user is entering the userID and pulling some data and I have a print button on that webform when the user clicks the print button the data should be displayed on the report of UserId..

• Installing .NET 3.5 SP1 on server broke WCF

  I installed .NET 3.5 SP1 on server which previously had .NET 3.0 SP2. Before install site was working perfectly. After install and subsequeny server restart, site displays but anything that makes use of the WCF service has stopped working. The exception log reports exceptions like the following when any calls are made to the client proxy: The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state. The server's application event log gave the following errors after the install: Configuration section system.serviceModel.activation already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.runtime.serialization already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.serviceModel already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. which seems to be inline with the fact that anything WCF related has stopped working. I am not experienced in server configurations or WCF so looking for any assistance with this. Thanks!! • Speed improvements for Perl's chameneos-redux script in the Computer Language Benchmarks Game

  Ever looked at the Computer Language Benchmarks Game, (formerly known as the Great Language Shootout)? Perl has some pretty healthy competition there at the moment. It also occurs to me that there's probably some places that Perl's scores could be improved. The biggest one is in the chameneos-redux script right now - the Perl version runs the worst out of any language : 1,626 times slower than the C baseline solution! There are some restrictions on how the programs can be made and optimized, and there is Perl's interpreted runtime penalty, but 1,626 times? There's got to be something that can get the runtime of this program way down. Taking a look at the source code and the challenge, what do you think could be done to reduce this runtime speed?

• How many layers are between my program and the hardware?

  I somehow have the feeling that modern systems, including runtime libraries, this exception handler and that built-in debugger build up more and more layers between my (C++) programs and the CPU/rest of the hardware. I'm thinking of something like this: 1 + 2 OS top layer Runtime library/helper/error handler a hell lot of DLL modules OS kernel layer Do you really want to run 1 + 2?-Windows popup (don't take this serious) OS kernel layer Hardware abstraction Hardware Go through at least 100 miles of circuits Eventually arrive at the CPU ADD 1, 2 Go all the way back to my program Nearly all technical things are simply wrong and in some random order, but you get my point right? How much longer/shorter is this chain when I run a C++ program that calculates 1 + 2 at runtime on Windows? How about when I do this in an interpreter? (Python|Ruby|PHP) Is this chain really as dramatic in reality? Does Windows really try "not to stand in the way"? e.g.: Direct connection my binary < hardware?

  I've recently read about the model validation capabilities of ASP.NET MVC which are all very cool until a certain point. What happens if the application doesn't know the data that it works with because it is all stored in DB and built together at runtime. Just like in Drupal, I'd like to be able to define custom types at runtime, and assign runtime validation rules as well.   I'm trying to have classes serialized using MS runtime and Mono runtime. While using MS runtime everything goes fine, but using Mono I give me some exception and program startup. The following exception are thrown: There was an error reflecting a type: System.TypeInitializationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a type: System.InvalidOperationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a field: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException < 0 (an array of classes) The binary was compiled using MS SDK, but I don't think this is the problem. What's going on? .NET shouln't be portable? How to solve these exceptions?

  I've been experimenting with Instruments off and on for a while and and I still can't do the following (with any sensible results): determine or estimate the average runtime of a function that's called many times. For example if I'm driving my gameLoop at 60 Hz with a CADisplayLink I'd like to see how long the loop takes to run on average... 10 ms? 30 ms etc. I've come close with the "CPU activity" instrument but the results are inconsistent or don't make sense. The time profiler seems promising but all I can get is "% of runtime"... and I'd like an actual runtime.

Quickly recalling I see following advantages: Simple structure (pop/push), trivial to implement Most processors are anyway optimized for stack operations, so it is very fast Less problems with memory fragmentation, it is always about moving memory-pointer up and down for allocation and freeing complete blocks of memory by resetting the pointer to the last entry offset. Is the list complete or did I miss something? Are there programming language runtime environments which are not using stacks for storage at all?

  My project allows users to create custom css for our flex app. In regards to compiling the CSS into SWFs on the server side: Should I use the flex2.compiler.css.Compiler class in mxmlc-3.5.0.12683.jar? Or Should I invoke mxmlc from Runtime.getRuntime().exec()? The css.Compiler class is not very well documented. Does anyone have any examples that use this? For the Runtime exec method, what is the best way to package mxmlc into the maven build so its available to the server at runtime?

I read about C# and the ability to compile -and execute- code in runtime, but that is too hurting.. I am also thinking about assembly... it is easier there to change running code but it is not very powerful...   Hi, I am trying to get my head around the way shared libraries work in the c++ unix environment. I understand we only need header files and no shared libraries specification when compiling code. But if I want to create an executable or shared library from my compiled files, do I need to specify shared library dependencies (those are dynamic)? And do the paths of shared libraries need to match the path at runtime loading? I am using Linux 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux I am having a problem where my code is not able to pick up a library at runtime. I have tried setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH. • What is the role of asserts in C++ programs that have unit tests?

  Greetings, I've been adding unit tests to some legacy C++ code, and I've run into many scenarios where an assert inside a function will get tripped during a unit test run. A common idiom that I've run across is functions that take pointer arguments and immediately assert if the argument is NULL. I could easily get around this by disabling asserts when I'm unit testing. But I'm starting to wonder if unit tests are supposed to alleviate the need for runtime asserts. Is this a correct assessment? Are unit tests supposed to replace runtime asserts by happening sooner in the pipeline (ie: the error is caught in a failing test instead of when the program is running). On the other hand, I don't like adding soft fails to code (eg: if(param == NULL) return false;). A runtime assert at least makes it easier to debug a problem in case a unit test missed a bug.   I'm developing plugins in Eclipse which mandates the use of singleton pattern for the Plugin class in order to access the runtime plugin. The class holds references to objects such as Configuration and Resources. In Eclipse 3.0 plug-in runtime objects are not globally managed and so are not generically accessible. Rather, each plug-in is free to declare API which exposes the plug-in runtime object (e.g., MyPlugin.getInstance() In order for the other components of my system to access these objects, I have to do the following: MyPlugin.getInstance().getConfig().getValue(MyPlugin.CONFIGKEY_SOMEPARAMETER); , which is overly verbose IMO. Since MyPlugin provides global access, wouldn't it be easier for me to just provide global access to the objects it manages as well? MyConfig.getValue(MyPlugin.CONFIGKEY_SOMEPARAMETER); Any thoughts? (I'm actually asking because I was reading about the whole "Global variable access and singletons are evil" debates)

• Determine version of dll linked against

  According to this article, the version of a referenced dll is embedded in the exe file. Using ProcExp, I can see that the runtime loaded dll is indeed the latest dll available on my machine, but I'm interested to know the linked version. As a side note, I built the project using the VS9 msbuild, and interested in the VC runtime (msvcr90.dll) version. In the VC9 redist folder it is 9.0.30729.1, runtime the .4926 is loaded. My questions are: Is there any tool with which I can extract the dll version linked to (from the dll/exe)? Which version does VS link to by default? The one found in its redist folder? Thank you.

• Is it possible that an C++ application use CRT 4053 when the manifest uses 762?

  My application is compiled on a development PC with a manifest 762: However at runtime, on another release PC, the application uses the 4053 version of the file. c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4053_x-ww_e6967989\MSVCR80.DLL Somewhere along the execution of my application I get a runtime error pointing to the msvcr80.dll. I suspect that the problem might be caused because the application use a DLL at runtime that was not used during the build. If I check in the WinSxS folder of the release PC I have both 762 and 4053 version of the CRT. Why does the application uses 4053 instead of the one used in the manifest? Thanks.

  I know there are three retention policies for Java annotations: CLASS: Annotations are to be recorded in the class file by the compiler but need not be retained by the VM at run time. RUNTIME: Annotations are to be recorded in the class file by the compiler and retained by the VM at run time, so they may be read reflectively. SOURCE: Annotations are to be discarded by the compiler. And although I understand their usage scenarios, I don't get why it is such an important thing to specify the retention policy that retention policies exist at all. I mean, why aren't all the annotations just kept at runtime? Do they generate so much bytecode / occupy so much memory that stripping those undeclared as RUNTIME does make that much difference?

• How do I create a Linked Server in SQL Server 2005 to a password protected Access 95 database?

  I need to create a linked server with SQL Server Management Studio 2005 to an Access 95 database, which happens to be password protected at the database level. User level security has not been implemented. I cannot convert the Access database to a newer version. It is being used by a 3rd party application; so modifying it, in any way, is not allowed. I've tried using the Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider and the ODBC OLE DB Provider. The 3rd party application creates a System DSN (with the proper database password), but I've not had any luck in using either method. If I were using a standard connection string, I think it would look something like this: Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source='C:\Test.mdb';Jet OLEDB:Database Password=####; I'm fairly certain I need to somehow incorporate Jet OLEDB:Database Password into the linked server setup, but haven't figured out how. I've posted the scripts I'm using along with the associated error messages below. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll provide more details if needed, just ask. Thanks!
