  when "Services" opens, it's in Extended View. i prefer Standard view. i also prefer this column layout: Status | Startup Type | Log On As | Name | Description because when I expand all columns via Ctrl+(numeric keypad "+") what i need to see most i can view without being forced to scroll to the right. Problem: my preferred layout does not persist. QUESTION: how can i force Windows (2008 R2, 7, XP, et cetera) to remmember my settings? thnx / g.

• How do I make the icons smaller in Stacks grid view for Snow Leopard?

  Since I installed Snow Leopard, I'm stuck with huge icons in my stacks/folder views in my dock. It use to adjust the layout and size of the window so that as many icons as possible fit on the screen, but now it shows huge icons and a scrollbar instead. I'd like the old behavior back so I don't have to scroll anymore. Does anyone know where the setting for this is? Maybe hidden in some .plist?

• Is there a way to specify minimum minibuffer/echo area size in emacs?

  I am running Emacs 24, and due to a separate issue, my input method displays input candidates in the minibuffer regardless of how I set its options. That would not be such a problem if the minibuffer did not resize from height 2 (when displaying candidates) to height 1 (when not), repeatedly, as I scroll through candidates--it's really jarring. I looked through the documentation online and searched the configuration pages, but I couldn't find a setting for this. Is it possible?

  I just got a new PC, Windows 7 Ultimate with a: fancy MS keyboard. I am puzzled why ALT+PRTSCN keyboard combo seems to put nothing on my keyboard. • Mac / OS X Finder regularly jumps down or changes selection in the file list (annoyance)

  I have this annoying problem with Finder on Snow Leopard. Every time I activate a Finder window and for example navigate to a folder, a few seconds later the selection or scroll will jump down in the list. It is like something is changed with the folder and the position is resetted or changed. Anyone know what causes this? Is Finder detecting some constant change in the folder that I cannot see?   Is there any way to get Windows Explorer tree view in Windows 7 to stop jumping? I think they really messed up this design. Click a node to expand a deeper level and it instantly scrolls the tree vertically to a new location. This is not a good feature since my eye completely loses the node it was focused on and I have to hunt for where I was. I want the tree view to remain fixed where it is unless I scroll it myself.

  I'm on a laptop without a mouse. This means I don't have the middle mouse button/wheel. I tried to use ahk to make my numpad act like a mouse wheel with the middle mouse button.
