  I'm trying to allocate memory for a multidimensional array (8 rows, 3 columns). Here's the code for the allocation (I'm sure the error is clear for you) char **ptr = (char **) malloc( sizeof(char) * 8); for (i = 0; i < 3; i++) ptr[i] = (char *) malloc( sizeof(char) * 3); The crash happens when I reference this: ptr[3][0]; Unhandled exception at 0x0135144d in xxxx.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0xabababab. Are there any recommended references/readings for this kind of subject? Thanks.

• Missing feature in Hyper-V from Virtual PC

  One thing I really miss is the ability to create shared folder between host and guest.  Virtual PC does this well, you can create Shared Folder to be used every time, or just this one.  I have read some posts on how to do this.  Some people suggest using ISO Creator to package up the files and mount the image to DVD drive, but what I need is truly a "shared" environment, so I'm currently looking into creating Virtual switch and creating an internal network between the host and guest.  Let's see how that works out. I would have loved to give Virtual SAN Manager a try, but I don't have a local Fibre Channel to set one up. • Access samba shares befor login

  I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on an old Compaq C300. I want to use it to share my movies over lan so that the rest of my family can watch without hi-jacking my pc. I installed samba and shared the Public folder under the Home folder of my user account. But I can only access this folder from my Win 7 pc when I am logged in. If I log out or restart without logging in then I cannot access the shared folder. I am used to the Windows service that starts at boot making shared files available over the network before the user has logged in. How can I accomplish this in Ubuntu?

  in C++ Primer 4th edition 2.1.1, it says "when assigning an out-of-range value to a signed type, it is up to the compiler to decide what value to assign". I can't understand it. I mean, if you have code like "char 5 = 299", certainly the compiler will generate asm code like "mov BYTE PTR _sc$[ebp], 43"(VC) or "movb $43, -2(%ebp)"(gcc+mingw), it IS decided by the compiler. but what if we assign a value that is given by the user input? like, via command line? and the asm code generated will be "movb %al, -1(%ebp)"(gcc+mingw) and " mov cl, BYTE PTR _i$[ebp] mov BYTE PTR _sc$[ebp], cl "(VC), so now how can compiler decide what will happen? I think now it is decided by the CPU. Can you give me a clear explanation?

  In my project I take a string from user and then I need to check if vowels a, e, I, O, U are present. If so, I have to find out which one comes first in the string and which one comes next after that. For example, if a user gave input something like this: char expr[] = "this is for something real"; I comes first, then I again, then O and so on. I checked whether the characters are in the string or not using strchr(expr,'character here'). To find which character comes first, I find the index of each character using const char *ptr = strchr(expr, characters here); if(ptr) { int index = ptr - expr; } After that I check which index is bigger. But this is very long process. Is there a smarter way to do this?

  Hello, gcc 4.1.2 c89 I am reviewing some code and I have come across the following function. I have never seen a function declared like this before. There are no data types for the paraemeters. My best guess is that the function is using a list of data types separated by semi-colons. The return type seems to be returning a function with those parameters. However, the read function is not defined anywhere. What is the advantage and purpose of declaring a function like this? • Use of Shl in assembly

  I have the following piece of lines and I do not understand that. Hope that someone can help me: ..... MOV EAX, DWORD PTR SS:[EBP-0x4] SHL EAX, 0x2 ADD EAX, DWORD PTR SS:[EBP-0x8] PUSH EAX .... Normally, it helps me to translate that into C language. But somehow I cant find a way to do it in that case. So, I only know that in the second line with SHL the register is multiplied by 4. And that the DWORD PTR SS:[EBP-0x4] looks like an array representation but i am not sure.   Hello so I've found code that plots a pixel in an SDL Screen Surface : void putpixels(int x, int y, int color) { unsigned int *ptr = (unsigned int*)Screen->pixels; int lineoffset = y * (Screen->pitch / 4 ); ptr[lineoffset + x ] = color; } But I have no idea what its actually doing here this is my thoughts. You make an unsigned integer to hold the unsigned int version of pixels then you make another integer to hold the line offset and it equals to multiply by pitch which is then divided by 4 ... Now why am I dividing it by 4 and what is the pitch and why do I multiply it?? Why must I change the lineoffset and add it to the x value then equal it to colors?   I've written quite extensively about link ordering issues, but I've not discussed the interaction between archive libraries and shared libraries. So let's take a simple program that calls a maths library function: #include <math.h int main() { for (int i=0; i<10000000; i++) { sin(i); } } We compile and run it to get the following performance: bash-3.2$ cc -g -O fp.c -lm bash-3.2$ timex ./a.out real 6.06 user 6.04 sys 0.01 Now most people will have heard of the optimised maths library which is added by the flag -xlibmopt. This contains optimised versions of key mathematical functions, in this instance, using the library doubles performance: bash-3.2$ cc -g -O -xlibmopt fp.c -lm bash-3.2$ timex ./a.out real 2.70 user 2.69 sys 0.00 The optimised maths library is provided as an archive library (libmopt.a), and the driver adds it to the link line just before the maths library - this causes the linker to pick the definitions provided by the static library in preference to those provided by libm. We can see the processing by asking the compiler to print out the link line: bash-3.2$ cc -### -g -O -xlibmopt fp.c -lm /usr/ccs/bin/ld ... fp.o -lmopt -lm -o a.out... The flag to the linker is -lmopt, and this is placed before the -lm flag. So what happens when the -lm flag is in the wrong place on the command line: bash-3.2$ cc -g -O -xlibmopt -lm fp.c bash-3.2$ timex ./a.out real 6.02 user 6.01 sys 0.01 If the -lm flag is before the source file (or object file for that matter), we get the slower performance from the system maths library. Why's that? If we look at the link line we can see the following ordering: /usr/ccs/bin/ld ... -lmopt -lm fp.o -o a.out So the optimised maths library is still placed before the system maths library, but the object file is placed afterwards. This would be ok if the optimised maths library were a shared library, but it is not - instead it's an archive library, and archive library processing is different - as described in the linker and library guide: "The link-editor searches an archive only to resolve undefined or tentative external references that have previously been encountered." An archive library can only be used resolve symbols that are outstanding at that point in the link processing. When fp.o is placed before the libmopt.a archive library, then the linker has an unresolved symbol defined in fp.o, and it will search the archive library to resolve that symbol. If the archive library is placed before fp.o then there are no unresolved symbols at that point, and so the linker doesn't need to use the archive library. This is why libmopt needs to be placed after the object files on the link line. On the other hand if the linker has observed any shared libraries, then at any point these are checked for any unresolved symbols. The consequence of this is that once the linker "sees" libm it will resolve any symbols it can to that library, and it will not check the archive library to resolve them. This is why libmopt needs to be placed before libm on the link line. This leads to the following order for placing files on the link line: Object files Archive libraries Shared libraries If you use this order, then things will consistently get resolved to the archive libraries rather than to the shared libaries.

Is (Derived*)base_ptr; an upcast or downcast? I call it upcast because you are going away from the base into something more specific. Other people told me it is a downcast because you are going down a hierarchy into something specific with the top being the root. But other people seem to call it what i call it. When converting a base ptr to a derived ptr is it called upcasting or downcasting? and if someone can link to an official source or explain why its called that than great.

• Unable to launch onscreen keyboard (osk.exe) from a 32-bit process on Win7 x64

  90% of the time I am unable to launch osk.exe from a 32bit process on Win7 x64. Originally the code was just using: Process.Launch("osk.exe"); Which won't work on x64 because of the directory virtualization. Not a problem I thought, I'll just disable virtualization, launch the app, and enable it again, which I thought was the correct way to do things. I'm specializing the template function on wide-character string so that I can do some wide-to-narrow translation before writing the log message. I can't get TCHAR to work properly - it doesn't use the specialization. Ideas?   Hi there I'm using uploadify with asp and I want to change the file name to the current date+time when the file is complete.
