• 2-column table with two foreign keys. Performance/design question.

  Hello everyone! I recently ran into a quite complex problem and after looking around a lot I couldn't find a solution to it. I've found answers to my questions many times before on stackoverflow.com, so I decided to post here. So I'm making a user/group managment system for a web-based project, and I'm storing all related data into a postgreSQL database. This system relies on three tables: USERS GROUPS GROUP_USERS The two first tables simply define all the users and all the groups on the site, and the last table, GROUP_USERS, stores the groups every user is part of. It only has two columns: USER_ID GROUP_ID Since every user can be a member of several groups, I decided to make a separate table for this purpose, rather than storing a comma separated column in the USERS-table. Now, both columns are foreign keys, and I want to make them both primary keys as well, this since each combination of USER_ID and GROUP_ID has to be unique, and if I give them the constraint UNIQUE pgAdmin tells me that each table should have at least one Primary key. But now I am stuck with what seems to be a lot of indexes and relations to a very small table only containing numbers. In the end, I want this table to be as fast as possible, even if containing tens of thousands of rows. Size on disk shouldn't be a problem since its just all numbers anyway, but it feels quite stupid to have a full-sized index refering to a smaller table. Should I stick with my current solution, store comma-separated values in a column in the USERS-table or is there any other solution I should be aware of. PS. I don't want to use an array-column, even if they are supported by postgreSQL. I want to be as generic as possible so I can switch database later on, if necessary. EDIT: I other words, will using a compound primary key and two foreign keys in one table with only two columns have a negative impact on performance rather than the opposite due to the size of the generated index? • AJAX Request Erroring

• ASP.Net MVC and Windows 7 404 error

  O.K. Stupid question..... I sepnt nearly a day getting an MVC site working, and then I published it. After that, the hell began. I'm using Windows 7, Visual Studio 2008 and MVC. I published it and first the Default.aspx wouldn't come up. I gave up on playing with that for a few and just did the easy thing a typed in default.aspx. I'll fix that problem later. So, I clicked on one of my navigation buttons which prior to this worked just fine in the internal development IIS, and I get a 404 error. I spent two days surfing the Microsoft support forums and every other support forum I can find. No fix. So, I tried something a little different. Just to see if I screwed up. I created a new TestMVC application. Set the output to a website on the local IIS. Compiled and after typing in the default.aspx (it was set as the startup file in the project) I then clicked on the About button on the base MVC application. And what do I get? 404. I know this is new, folks, but this is crazy. What is it about this process that would take this much effort to get it right, especially since it works on the test server.

• C# Casting system.__comobject to class type

  I have an Excel Add-In that I'm currently trying to set up a unit test framework for. For the unit tests I've followed this guide: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/varsha/archive/2010/08/17/writing-automated-test-cases-for-vsto-application.aspx It seems to work fine, until I want to return a class object from my interface. Specifying the class object as the return type throws a "return argument has an invalid type" exception when calling the method. Changing the return type from the class to an object allows me to call the method and get the object, but now I'm unable to cast it as the class and use it as intended, getting this exception message when I try: > Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to class type > 'anaplan.Utility.XYCoordinates'. Instances of types that represent COM > components cannot be cast to types that do not represent COM > components; however they can be cast to interfaces as long as the > underlying COM component supports QueryInterface calls for the IID of > the interface. I've retrieved the Type name using VisualBasic.Information.TypeName and it's showing it as the class I expect. Is there any way to get the comobject cast back to the class? Or another way to access the properties it has? Or am I just being a bit stupid here?

• CodeIgniter - the right way to create "block" elements on web page

  Hello. I've been searching for a solutions for this problem a while but haven't seen any "valid mvc" solution for this. I hope I can explain my problem clearly enough for you guys. I need to create a dynamic block of HTML on my website. (eg. a block containing user's latest blog comments). I have a template view file (a file containing header, content container and a footer) where I need to add some content AND this block element. The problem is that I don't want to duplicate this block code on every controller. It just feels stupid and I'm sure there's a better way to do this than just duplicating same stuff all over again on all the controller files? I can add view inside another view just fine, but what bugs me is how to actually generate that dynamic content to this block's view-file. I can't call controller from view file, controller from controller filem or model from view file because what I understand that just isn't the "mvc" way? Anyone got any tricks or tips for this?

• Change class of parent div if radio input checked

  I've been searching and searching google for answers to my question but have been unsuccessful so far. I'm hoping one of you guys could give me some assistance. I have 10 divs with the class name "dividend" holding a table with the classname/id of "container" then two smaller tables inside that. Within the container table at the bottom is a hidden radio button with the name "page1". I wrote an onClcick for the container table so the user can select the whole table instead of the radio button, but not I'm trying to change the style of the selected container so the users know they have selected it. I have tried a few different methods and I'm able to change the style to the new class by just writing document.getElementById('container').className = 'selected'; But because all 10 divs share the same name it will only change the style of the first element it finds. So I tried writing this loop to check if there are any selected radios in the document then to change the else name the style as the default. I'm sure its something stupid but I'm pretty stumped atm.. Any help would be appreciated. • Detailstext in TableView from Coredata Iphone

  Hey, that is my first question here at stackoverflow. Let me try to be specific as I can. The project is as follows: I am trying to parse an xml file in an iphone app, which works already. I am saving the parsed data into the CoreData of the Iphone. So far so good: I have two elements of the xml file which I want to show in the tableview as the text and the detailtext. Now the strange behaviour occurs: If I take the data of the Core Data and trying to visualize them in the tableview, then both elements are displayed in seperate cells and not as detailtext of the element. If I am just taking a constant string for the detailtext, then it works, but if I am trying to take for every cell a specific element from the Core Data then it is shown seperately in the tableview. I googled a lot, reading here and there. I dont know which code I should show because I dont have a clue where exactly the mistake could be. Maybe someone can answer that immediately because it is a stupid mistake somewhere, which is common. Thanks for your help.

  I'm new to Obj-C and I have run in to a very, very basic mental block that's making me feel a little stupid. I want to pass a variable from one method to another in an purely objective-C way. So far I'm stuck and have resorted to writing it in C. • Need help implementing this algorithm with map reduce(hadoop)

  Hi all! i have algorithm that will go through a large data set read some text files and search for specific terms in those lines. I have it implemented in Java, but I didnt want to post code so that it doesnt look i am searching for someone to implement it for me, but it is true i really need a lot of help!!! This was not planned for my project, but data set turned out to be huge, so teacher told me I have to do it like this. I was reading about MapReduce and thaught that i first do the standard implementation and then it will be more/less easier to do it with mapreduce. But didnt happen, since algorithm is quite stupid and nothing special, and map reduce...i cant wrap my mind around it. So here is shortly pseudo code of my algorithm LIST termList (there is method that creates this list from lucene index) FOLDER topFolder INPUT topFolder IF it is folder and not empty list files (there are 30 sub folders inside) FOR EACH sub folder GET file "CheckedFile.txt" analyze(CheckedFile) ENDFOR END IF Method ANALYZE(CheckedFile) read CheckedFile WHILE CheckedFile has next line GET line FOR(loops through termList) GET third word from line IF third word = term from list append whole line to string buffer ENDIF ENDFOR END WHILE OUTPUT string buffer to file Also, as you can see, each time when "analyze" is called, new file has to be created, i understood that map reduce is difficult to write to many outputs??? I understand mapreduce intuition, and my example seems perfectly suited for mapreduce, but when it comes to do this, obviously I do not know enough and i am STUCK! Please please help.

• .htaccess - alias all www-only requests to subdirectory

  Trying to install the wonderful Concrete5 CMS to use as my main site engine - the problem is it has about 15 different files and directories, and they clutter up my root. I'd really like to move it to a /_concrete/ subdirectory, and still maintain it in the domain root. htaccess has never been my strong suit - after a lot of research and learning, and a lot of error 500s, my frustration is overriding my pride and I'm posting here. Here's exactly what I'm trying to accomplish: Any requests that come through www.domain.com are forwarded to www.domain.com/_concrete/, except in the case of an existing file. The end-user URL shouldn't change - they will still see the site as www.domain.com, even though they're being served www.domain.com/_concrete/. Multiple subdomains exist on this site as sub-folders within the root - thus, only requests coming through www.domain.com should be redirected. Here's the closest I got with my htaccess, which produces an error 500: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?domain\.com [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^_concrete RewriteRule ^(.*)$ _concrete/$1 [L,QSA] This is the result of 4 hours of sweat and blood (mostly blood), so I have to be close. • Sorting text and attached images in MFMailCompositeViewController?

  In the app I'm currently writing I'd like to populate the message body of an e-mail with a combination of text and images. It took me forever to find out that in order to get an embedded image, you had to have bold tags in the message body (...uhhh, yeah), otherwise the image just shows up as an attachment. But now I have the problem that all of the images just go to the end of the body, and I can't programmatically put text after or in between any of the attachments. So far I've tried: Adding images as part of the body string using tags and a base64 string. This would have worked, but most e-mail clients reject images embedded in this manner. Using normal tags with a references to the attached files, using the assigned filenames. Didn't work at all. Attaching images normally, but also attaching blocks of text to the e-mail. The text is not embedded in the same manner as the images. Turns out to be an attached txt file on the receiving end. Apple has restricted their MFMailComposieViewController class to the point of ridiculousness, but I know there has to be a way to do this, because they add in their stupid "Sent from my *apple device name here*" message at the end of every e-mail. So does anyone have any ideas?

  Hi, my problem is that my variables are not working in javascript. all variables need names without some character at the beginning, this is the stupid thing...Anyways, im trying to make a funtion that makes "select all checkboxes". • Ruby on Rails or PHP... Somehow uncertain

  Hi everybody... I've been thinking about this a long time now but i wanna hear your opinion because i always received the ebst answers here. So in advance... thank you guys. Right now i have to make this decision: Shift a prototype webservice to production quality. Choose either Ruby or PHP... (Background: A friend of mine is joining the project and prefers rails) I've already played around a bit with RoR (only basic stuff) but i am really disappointed about the documentation of Rails and Ruby. In relation to PHP i find only fragments or hard to use references. At the end i am a bit scared. I dont wanna waste my time realizing that i am not capable of doing s.th in Ruby what i could with PHP. Maybe only because i am too stupid and don't find a proper explanation ;-) Did anyone experience this shift and can tell me how easy/hard it was to switch from PHP to Ruby? E.G. would you recommend programming it in PHP and using MVC as a base pattern? Thanks for your opinion!!!

• How to handle javascript & css files across a site?

  Hi everybody, I have had some thoughts recently on how to handle shared javascript and css files across a web application. In a current web application that I am working on, I got quite a large number of different javascripts and css files that are placed in an folder on the server. Some of the files are reused, while others are not. In a production site, it's quite stupid to have a high number of HTTP requests and many kilobytes of unnecessary javascript and redundant css being loaded. The solution to that is of course to create one big bundled file per page that only contains the necessary information, which then is minimized and sent compressed (GZIP) to the client. There's no worries to create a bundle of javascript files and minimize them manually if you were going to do it once, but since the app is continuously maintained and things do change and develop, it quite soon becomes a headache to do this manually while pushing out new updates that features changes to javascripts and/or css files to production. What's a good approach to handle this? How do you handle this in your application?

  this may be a stupid question as I can't seem to find an answer :P Is there a way with javascript/jQuery to Target all links on a page ONLY if they link to the current page? Say i've got a static sidebar on ALL pages, for intents and purposes: <ul id="sidebar"> <li><a href="/one">One</a></li> <li><a href="/two">Two</a></li> <li><a href="/three">Three</a></li> </ul> Notice the code for ALL of them is the same. Let's say I'm on "www.domain.com/two" - Is there a way to target <li><a href="#">Two</a></li> because it's linking to the current page? ***ANSWERED***** The guy deleted his answer - but I used it to create this - var linksToCurrentPage = $('a[href="' + window.location.href + '"]'); if (linksToCurrentPage) { $('a').addClass('currently-active'); }; which worked :)

  Hi all, I think I've got an understanding problem of GTK. My simple application has a stream of images and I'd like to display them within my GTK Window. I guess gtk_container_remove and gtk_container_add might be stupid to use for this? • Is there a free tool which can help visualize the logic of a stored procedure in SQL Server 2008 R2?

  I would like to be able to plot a call graph of a stored procedure. I am not interested in every detail, and I am not concerned with dynamic SQL (although it would be cool to detect it and skip it maybe or mark it as such.) I would like the tool to generate a tree for me, given the server name, db name, stored proc name, a "call tree", which includes: Parent stored procedure. Every other stored procedure that is being called as a child of the caller. Every table that is being modified (updated or deleted from) as a child of the stored proc which does it. Hopefully it is clear what I am after; if not - please do ask. If there is not a tool that can do this, then I would like to try to write one myself. Python 2.6 is my language of choice, and I would like to use standard libraries as much as possible. Any suggestions? EDIT: For the purposes of bounty Warning: SQL syntax is COMPLEX. I need something that can parse all kinds of SQL 2008, even if it looks stupid. No corner cases barred :) EDIT2: I would be OK if all I am missing is graphics.

• XML Reader threw Object Null exception, but node exists(?!)

  I am hoping someone could enlighten me as to why I am getting the annoying - "xml object reference not set to an instance .." error. The elements (nodes?) I am looking for seem to exist and I have not misspelled it either :[ I might be doing something stupid here, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated. • Multilangual website using ASP and a database

  i want to consult about something i do. my website has 3 languages. • Howto display or view encrypted data in encrypted form?

  In the Wikipedia Article on Block Cipher Modes they have a neat little diagram of an unencrypted image, the same image encrypted using ECB mode and another version of the same image encrypted using another method. At university I have developed my own implementation of DES (you can find it here) and we must demo our implementation in a presentation. I would like to display a similar example as shown above using our implementation. However most image files have header blocks associated with them, which when encrypting the file with our implementation, also get encrypted. So when you go to open them in an image viewer, they are assumed to be corrupted and can't be viewed. I was wondering if anybody new of a simple header-less image format which we could use to display these? Or if anyone had any idea's as to how the original creator of the images above achieved the above result? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks Note: I realise rolling your own cryptography library is stupid, and DES is considered broken, and ECB mode is very flawed for any useful cryptography, this was purely an academic exercise for school. So please, no lectures, I know the drill.

• Add a smaller subView with new origin

  I can't get my head around this - I know it must be simple.. I'm starting to feel pretty stupid. I have two viewControllers. MainViewController.h/m and LevelsViewController.h/m I want to add a subView from the LevelsViewController class and a view that is built in IB called levelsView. I am calling this from the MainViewController.m file. The levelsView is only 200x200 pixels and I want to offset it from the frame origin of the superView by x=140 pixels and y=50 pixels. I have this working - the view displays, but I can't figure out how to offset it. It only shows up at the 0,0 superView frame origin. (The superView shows below it, which is what I want). Here is the code I call in the method in the MainViewController.m that displays the levelsView.(I have commented out some of the things I have tried - but throws this error: error: request for member 'frame' in 'myLevelsView', which is of non-class type 'LevelsViewController*' ) - (void) displayLevelsPage { if (self.theLevelsView == nil) // Does not yet exist - therefore create { LevelsViewController * myLevelsView = [[LevelsViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"levelsView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]]; NSLog(@"NEW theLevelsView instance created!"); CGRect frame2 = CGRectMake(140, 50, 200, 200); //myLevelsView.frame = frame2; self.theLevelsView = myLevelsView; [myLevelsView release]; } [self.view addSubview: theLevelsView.view]; NSLog(@"Levels View has been activated"); } Any insight would be appreciated.
