• My Future as a Developer

  You have been a developer for 16 years, mostly in the unix environment woring with C, C++ and Java. You are proficient in those skills, but can always improve. The jobs for C and C++ developers working in the Unix environment are not as plentiful as they used to be, so you're looking to expand your skills. If you were going to focus on an area of technology for the next 10 years, and you had a choice of C# or to continue with your work in Java and expand those skills, which would you choose and why? I love being a programmer. I want to focus on an area that would put me in demand so that I can continue to be a programmer. This is not meant to be subjective, I'm looking for guidance and advice from other professionals. This is a question that is at the front of my mind right now. TIA.

  I've been trying to reinstall all my purchased apps on a new machine, and I ran into a problem. Because of the size of them (about 10-12GB in total) and the fact that downloading them is painfully slow for whatever reason (at most 800kB/s), it takes a lot of time (not to mention USC crashing). And then, when I tried to leave them overnight, none of them were installed and everything was at the same spot I left it. Is there anyway to install them via terminal? Like some kind of USC backend were I could just add the archives for apps listed as purchased and then install them via apt-get?

My guess is that someone has a script that is 'logged' in and making all these calls. • Showing range on hexagonal grid

  Here is the situation. I have hexagonal board,and a unit on it,with speed or move value 4.Diffrent terrain has a diffrent cost.When i click on the unit,game should show me a move range. My solution was to check each hex in range of 4,with A* pathfinding,and if path cost was less than 4 then this hex was in range.Finally game nicely show me range of that unit. My question is: Is there other solution to search for range on hex grids or square grid,because even if i am really proud of what i did in my solution,i think,it is a little to exaggerated?:)) What make me ask this question?I noticed that when unit speed is 4 or 6 or even 8,time to computing range for my computer was really good,but when speed was 10 and more i noticed that i needed to wait few second to compute.Well in real games i rather dont see something like this and my A* pathfinding is rather well optimized,so im thinking that my solution is wrong. • What is the correct pattern to use in this case?

  I'm sure this scenario has arisen before, and I want to know what experience has taught to be the best solution. I have a number of classes that are all of a kind. Say all the objects are "Content". They may be "Article", or "Book" for example. The reason I want the "Content" abstraction is because I want to define a number of behaviours for all "Content" objects and not have to build a new DB Table and 10 classes of essentially the same code for each type of "Content". For example, to attach a "Tag" or a "Premise" to a content object would be much nicer if, say, I just had two columns one for ContentID and one for TagID. A solution I've played around with is to have a Content table with a unique ID, and then to have foreign key references on all the other tables (Book, Article, etc). This has actually proven quite solid, but I'm just not sure about it. Do you know how to call this described pattern?

  So my PC had windows XP and Win 7 on it and I went into the XP partition and installed Ubuntu 12.10 over it being sure to use 90% of the XP partition for the / mount and 10% for the swap. It installed but when I boot the computer it doesn't give me the option of choosing between 7 or Ubuntu, just booting right to the Linux distro. Should I have installed it in 7 over the XP partition? I can see the drive in Ubuntu that contains all the 7 files. How can I recover my 7 access?

  I'm working full time 5 days a week, mostly between 10 and 14 hours a day. In the end of the day I'm very tired and just wanna take a shower, hang out and go to sleep. I have a lot of ideas that I want to implement and someday sell maybe through an online software business. I have my weekends free. However, when I get to the weekend I can't even imagine myself turn on the computer. But I really want to make my ideas happen, and I can't leave my job right now to devote myself only to my ideas.   I've been running a campaign for about a year and a half now and the campaign has been setup by location. I'd have one campaign targeted for a specific region. And then I would duplicate the ad groups for each campaign. I have 5 ad groups targeting different areas of my business). This has worked reasonably well. It just occurred to me that it might easier if the campaign structure were reversed: 5 campaigns: each campaign focused on a different area of business and divided into 20+ adgroups (based on location). Will this screw up my campaign if I switch the structure? I have 10's for QS and I don't want to lose that!

  I have just installed a new copy of Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop . i have noticed that my system is running 4x to 5x faster than normal . i have just install Vmware Desktop & centos for testing something . i have noticed that i has installed in just like less than 1 minute !! My system is booting so fast that after starting my laptop i got GUI in like 10 to 13 sec & shutting down in like 2 to 3 sec & all programs ( Firefox , Chrome , etc ) running so fast that i can see .... The only change i made after installation is cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness 1 How do I configure swappiness? The System is Dell N 5110 i7 with 8GB of RAM So my question is that what should i look for that why my system running very fast ?

A common problematic scenario I can think of is that with the use of a WYSIWYG, an editor uploads an image "somewhere" to the file-system, inserts it directly into the text, and publishes the article. Shortly afterwards, someone wants to pull out "The last 10 uploaded images", and display them on the frontpage. Good luck parsing all the content. Taking a look around at some large international online magazines, such as http://www.time.com/, and some local ones, I see that the editors seem to produce articles that are almost only consisting of raw text. Images are usually at the top of the article, and otherwise the most complex content are usually links. What are some common reasons for refusing editors access to WYSIWYG tools?

  Sometimes you're coding and you find yourself forgetting your context. For example, look at this situation: The cursor is on line 52. Imagine you're coding there and you're puzzling on some problem for some time. Wouldn't it be handy to know, without scrolling up (and then back down again to where you were working), what the method signature looks like? And does the method begin two lines above the visible code or 10 lines? That information can now, in NetBeans iDE 7.3 (and already in the 7.3 Beta) very easily be ascertained, by putting the cursor on the closing brace of the code block: As you can see, a new vertical line is shown parallel to the line numbers, connecting the end of the method with its start, as well as, at the top of the editor, the complete method signature, together with the number of the line on which it's found. Very handy. Same support is found for other file types, such as in JavaScript files.
