• Way to automate setting of MergeOptions

  I am looking for an automated way to iterate over all ObjectQueries and set the merge option to no tracking (read only context). Once i find out how to do it i will be able to generate a default read only context using a T4 template. Is this possible? For example lets say i have these tables in my object context SampleContext TableA TableB TableC I would have to go through and do the below. SampleContext sc = new SampleContext(); sc.TableA.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; sc.TableB.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; sc.TableC.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; I am trying to find a way to generalize this using object context. I want to get it down to something like foreach(var objectQuery : sc){ objectQuery.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; } Preferably I would like to do it using the baseclass(ObjectContext): ObjectContext baseClass = sc as ObjectContext var objectQueries = sc.MetadataWorkspace.GetItem("Magic Object Query Option); But i am not sure i can even get access to the queries. • SQL Server 2008: Comparing similar records - Need to still display an ID for a record when the JOIN has no matches

  I'm writing a SQL Server 2008 report that will compare genetic test results for animals. A genetic test consists of an animalId, a gene and a result. Not all animals will have the same genes tested but I need to be able to display the results side-by-side for a given set of animals and only include the genes that are present for at least one of the selected animals. My TestResult table has the following data in it: animalId gene result 1 a CC 1 b CT 1 d TT 2 a CT 2 b CT 2 c TT 3 a CT 3 b TT 3 c CC 3 d CC 3 e TT I need to generate a result set that looks like the following. Note that Animal 3 is not being displayed (user doesn't want to see its results) and neither are results for Gene "e" since neither Animal 1 nor Animal 2 have a result for that gene: SireID SireResult CalfID CalfResult Gene 1 CC 2 CT a 1 CT 2 CT b 1 NULL 2 TT c 1 TT 2 NULL d But I can only manage to get this: SireID SireResult CalfID CalfResult Gene 1 CC 2 CT a 1 CT 2 CT b NULL NULL 2 TT c 1 TT NULL NULL d This is the query I'm using. • iTextSharp Conversion from Table to pdfPTable

  I have an old ASP.NET project originally done in ASP.NET 1.1 w/ iText.NET and converted to .NET 2.0 and iTextSharp 4.1.6.0. It uses lots of Table (I'm assuming pdfptable wasn't an option at the time it was created.) I am trying to convert this code to use the latest iTextSharp 5.0.0 dll and now see Table and cell have been removed. I started converting it anyway and soon found there is no equivalent to a lot of the functionality that Table offered. Mainly AddCell no longer allows a col,row setting. There are literally thousands of these calls in this code and the posibility of changing it to generate linearly row by row looks hopeless at the moment. • Forms Auth: have different credentials for a subdirectory?

  My website has forms authentication, and all is well. Now I want to create a subdirectory and have it also password-protected, but! I need the subdirectory to use a completely different set of logins/passwords than the whole website uses. Say, for example, I have users for the website stored in the "Users" table in a database. But for the subdirectory, I want the users to be taken from the "SubdirUsers" table. Which probably has a completely different structure. Consequently, I need the logins to be completely parallel, as in: Logging into the whole website does not make you logged into the subdirectory as well Clicking "logout" on the whole website does not nullify your login in the subdirectory And vice versa I do not want to create a separate virtual application for the subdirectory, because I want to share all libraries, user controls, as well as application state and cache. In other words, it has to be the same application. I also do not want to just add a flag to the "Users" table indicating whether this is a whole website user or the subdirectory user. User lists have to come from different sources. For now, the only option that I see is to roll my own Forms Auth for the subdirectory. Anybody can propose a better alternative?

• What's the fastest way to bulk insert a lot of data in SQL Server (C# client)

  I am hitting some performance bottlenecks with my C# client inserting bulk data into a SQL Server 2005 database and I'm looking for ways in which to speed up the process. I am already using the SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy (which is based on TDS) to speed up the data transfer across the wire which helped a lot, but I'm still looking for more. I have a simple table that looks like this: CREATE TABLE [BulkData]( [ContainerId] [int] NOT NULL, [BinId] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Sequence] [smallint] NOT NULL, [ItemId] [int] NOT NULL, [Left] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Top] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Right] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Bottom] [smallint] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PKBulkData] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [ContainerIdId] ASC, [BinId] ASC, [Sequence] ASC )) I'm inserting data in chunks that average about 300 rows where ContainerId and BinId are constant in each chunk and the Sequence value is 0-n and the values are pre-sorted based on the primary key. The %Disk time performance counter spends a lot of time at 100% so it is clear that disk IO is the main issue but the speeds I'm getting are several orders of magnitude below a raw file copy. Does it help any if I: Drop the Primary key while I am doing the inserting and recreate it later Do inserts into a temporary table with the same schema and periodically transfer them into the main table to keep the size of the table where insertions are happening small Anything else? -- Based on the responses I have gotten, let me clarify a little bit: Portman: I'm using a clustered index because when the data is all imported I will need to access data sequentially in that order. I don't particularly need the index to be there while importing the data. Is there any advantage to having a nonclustered PK index while doing the inserts as opposed to dropping the constraint entirely for import? Chopeen: The data is being generated remotely on many other machines (my SQL server can only handle about 10 currently, but I would love to be able to add more). It's not practical to run the entire process on the local machine because it would then have to process 50 times as much input data to generate the output. Jason: I am not doing any concurrent queries against the table during the import process, I will try dropping the primary key and see if that helps. ~ Andrew

  The Scenario I have written a Silverlight 3 Application that uses an SQL Server database. I'm moving the application onto the Cloud (Azure Platform). In order to do this I have had to setup my database on SQL Azure. I am using the ADO.Net Entity Framework to model my database. I have got the application running on the cloud, but I cannot get it to connect to the database. Below is the original localhost connection string, followed by the SQL Azure connection string that isn't working. The application itself runs fine, but fails when trying to retrieve data.   Hey! Total CakePHP noob here. This is sort of a two fold question. In a view that is used for adding user objects I would like to use a drop down (selection) field in the form. Each user belongs to a group so when I add a user I want a drop down that contains all of the groups that the user could possibly join. Currently the group_id field is a textfield. I know how to force it to be a selection field, but I don't know how to populate the selection with the names of the groups programmatically. The Current method: echo $form->input('group_id', array( '1' => 'NameOfGroup1', '2' => 'NameOfGroup2', '3' => 'NameOfGroup3') ); I want to generate the options array programmatically though. echo $form->input('group_id', $this->Group->find('list')); This doesn't work though. I get an error: Undefined property: View::$Group [APP/views/users/add.ctp, line 8] To me this means that I don't have access to the Group object from inside my user view. How can I accomplish this? Again, I want to do it programmatically so that it updates as I add groups or remove them.

  I'm having trouble disconnecting from a ftp-server, using the enterprisedt java ftp framework. I can simply not call disconnect() on a FileTransferClient object without getting an error. • Is it immoral to write crappy code even if readability and correctness is not a requirement?

  There are cases when crappy (i.e. unreadable and buggy) code is not much of a problem. For instance, imagine you need to generate a big text file that mostly follows a simple pattern with a few very complex exceptions. What do you do? You quickly write a simple algorithm and insert the exceptional bits in the output manually to save 4 hours. The code is unreadable, and the output is flawed, but it's still the correct way since it is way faster. But let's get this straight: I hate bad code. I've had to read and work with code that caused my stomach to hurt. I care a lot about good code. And actually, I caught myself thinking that it is immoral to write bad code even though the dirty approach is sometimes superior. I was surprised by myself and found my idea to be very irrational. Did you ever experience this? Should I just get rid of this stupid idea and use the most efficient approach to coding?

  Function socialbookmarksTableData(data) is called by another function to generate the content of a table -- data is a JSON object. Inside the function i call 2 other functions that use getJSON and POST (with json as a return object) to get some data. The problem is: though the functions execute correctly i get undefined value for the 2 variables (bookmarkingSites, bookmarkCategories).   Hi All, I want any user to be able to submit their name to a volunteer form but only administrators to be able to view any other URL. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to get this correct. • Login Website, curious Cookie Problem

  Hello, Language: C# Development Environment: Visual Studio 2008 Sorry if the english is not perfect. I want to login to a Website and get some Data from there. My Problem is that the Cookies does not work. Everytime the Website says that I should activate Cookies but i activated the Cookies trough a Cookiecontainer. I sniffed the traffic serveral times for the login progress and I see no problem there. I tried different methods to login and I have searched if someone else have this Problem but no results... • Can't bind string containing @ char with mysqli_stmt_bind_param

  I have a problem with my database class. I have a method that takes one prepared statement and any number of parameters, binds them to the statement, executes the statement and formats the result into a multidimentional array. Everthing works fine until I try to include an email adress in one of the parameters. The email contains an @ character and that one seems to break everything. • Why can't perfmon see instances of my custom performance counter?

  I'm creating some custom performance counters for an application. I wrote a simple C# tool to create the categories and counters. For example, the code snippet below is basically what I'm running. Then, I run a separate app that endlessly refreshes the raw value of the counter. While that runs, the counter and dummy instance are seen locally in perfmon. The problem I'm having is that the monitoring system we use can't see the instances in the multi-instance counter I've created when viewing remotely from another server. When using perfmon to browse the counters, I can see the category and counters, but the instances box is grayed out and I can't even select "All instances", nor can I click "Add". Using other access methods, like [typeperf][1] exhibit similar issues. I'm not sure if this is a server or code issue. This is only reproducible in the production environment where I need it. On my desktop and development servers, it works great. I'm a local admin on all servers. • Documentation and Build system for Mono/C#

  I'm starting out on a new project and a team member has decided to use C# as the implementation language. I don't have a lot of experience in C#, but a brief reading shows that it's very capable of being a complete cross-platform vm. Beyond the language, I've been having trouble selecting tools and workflows for managing the code as the project grows. It should be fairly small (<10K lines) but I would like to have the ability to generate documentation as the project grows, manage any external dependencies that we decide to use, and automate builds and testing. I am wondering what tools are commonly used or considered best practices for this language. I am mainly concerned with how would a build system potentially work on *nix as well as windows? Are there C# specific tools or is Make more common? In addition, I'd like to use a dvcs, but it doesn't look like Visual Studio and MonoDevelop support the same ones. What's the common vcs of choice for C#? For testing sort of Unit testing is available for C#/Mono? Finally, I know that there are good doc generators, but with the question of the build system, I would really like to have that just be a single step in the build similar to how testing is a step. Normally I'd automate with Hudson, but I am wondering if there is something more specific to the platform. Overall, I'd love to see a solution that provides a decent workflow on both windows and *nix without a heavy admin burden. I am pretty sure this is the holy grail of project management, so anything that puts me on that path is awesome.

• what webserver / mod / technique should I use to serve everything from memory?

  I've lots of lookuptables from which I'll generate my webresponse. I think IIS with Asp.net enables me to keep static lookuptables in memory which I can use to serve up my responses very fast. Are there however also non .net solutions which can do the same? I've looked at fastcgi, but I think this starts X processes, of which anyone can handle Y requests. But the processes are by definition shielded from eachother. I could configure fastcgi to use just 1 process, but does this have scalability implications? anything using PHP or any other interpreted language won't fly because it is also cgi or fastcgi bound right? I understand memcache could be an option, though this would require another (local) socket connection which I'd rather avoid since everything in memory would be much faster. The solution can work under WIndows or Unix... it doesn't matter too much. The only thing which matters is that there will be a lot of requests (100/sec now and growing to 500/sec in a year), and I want to reduce the amount of webservers needed to process it. The current solution is done using PHP and memcache (and the occasional hit to the SQL server backend). Although it is fast (for php anyway), Apache has real problems when the 50/sec is passed. I've put a bounty on this question since I've not seen enough responses to make a wise choice. At the moment I'm considering either Asp.net or fastcgi with C(++).

• Dynamically created operators

  I created a program using dev-cpp and wxwidgets which solves a puzzle. The user must fill the operations blocks and the results blocks, and the program will solve it. Im solving it using bruteforce, i generate all non repeated 9 length number combinations using a recursive algorithm. It does it pretty fast. Up to here all is great! But the problem is when my program operates depending the character on the blocks. Its extremely slow (it never gets the answer), because of the chars comparation against +, -, *, etc. Im doing a CASE. Is there some way or some programming language wich allows dinamic creation of operators? So i can define the operator ROW1COL2 to be a +, and the same way to all other operations.
