• How-to display a .gif as background image?

  Hi! The problem is in that "img/loading.gif" and safari (on winXP): in ff and ie I have no problems, and I clearly see the animated gif. In safari I can't see it. If I change the image with a (obviously static) png the image appears... Am I doing something wrong? What's the problem with safari?

• How should backbone.js handle a GET request that returns no results?

  I have a number of text input elements that when its values are changed, will trigger a fetch on listingListView's collection listingCollection, which then updates listingListView with the new data via the function listingListView.refreshList as shown below. I am using PHP/Codeigniter to expose a RESTful API. Problem: Everything works fine if there are results retrieved from the fetch(). However, when the filters results in no result being returned, how should the server side and the client side handle it? Currently Chrome's javascript console displays a 404 error and in the Network tab, the XHR request is highlighted in red. All I want to do in the event of zero results returned, is to blank the listingListView and show a message like (No results returned) and not throw any errors in the javascript console. Thanks! • Looking for a fast, compact, streamable, multi-language, strongly typed serialization format

  I'm currently using JSON (compressed via gzip) in my Java project, in which I need to store a large number of objects (hundreds of millions) on disk. I have one JSON object per line, and disallow linebreaks within the JSON object. This way I can stream the data off disk line-by-line without having to read the entire file at once. It turns out that parsing the JSON code (using http://www.json.org/java/) is a bigger overhead than either pulling the raw data off disk, or decompressing it (which I do on the fly). Ideally what I'd like is a strongly-typed serialization format, where I can specify "this object field is a list of strings" (for example), and because the system knows what to expect, it can deserialize it quickly. I can also specify the format just by giving someone else its "type". It would also need to be cross-platform. I use Java, but work with people using PHP, Python, and other languages. So, to recap, it should be: Strongly typed Streamable (ie. read a file bit by bit without having to load it all into RAM at once) Cross platform (including Java and PHP) Fast Free (as in speech) Any pointers?

• Slow Python HTTP server on localhost

  I am experiencing some performance problems when creating a very simple Python HTTP server. The key issue is that performance is varying depending on which client I use to access it, where the server and all clients are being run on the local machine. For instance, a GET request issued from a Python script (urllib2.urlopen('http://localhost/').read()) takes just over a second to complete, which seems slow considering that the server is under no load. Running the GET request from Excel using MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP also feels slow. However, requesting the data Google Chrome or from RCurl, the curl add-in for R, yields an essentially instantaneous response, which is what I would expect. Adding further to my confusion is that I do not experience any performance problems for any client when I am on my computer at work (the performance problems are on my home computer). Both systems run Python 2.6, although the work computer runs Windows XP instead of 7. The reason is that I read that a fully-qualified domain name lookup performed by one of these functions might be a reason for a slow server. Unfortunately setting them to just print a static message did not solve my problem. Also, notice that I have put in a print() statement as the first line of the do_GET() routine in MyHandler. The slowness occurs prior to this message being printed, meaning that none of the stuff that comes after it is causing a delay.

• Browsers disagree about the text of a body element

  My HTML looks like this: <html> <head> <title>Test</title> <script type="text/javascript" src="jQuery.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> function init() { var text = jQuery('body').text(); alert('length = ' + text.length); } </script> </head> <body onload="init()">0123456789</body> </html> When I load this in Firefox, the length is reported as 10. However, in Chrome it's 11 because it thinks there's a linefeed after the '9'. In IE it's also 11, but the last character is an escape. Meanwhile, Opera thinks there are 12 characters, with the last two being CR LF. If I change the body element to include a span: <body onload="init()"><span>0123456789</span></body> and the jQuery call to: var text = jQuery('body span').text(); then all the browsers agree that the length is 10. Clearly it's the body element that's causing the issue, but can anyone explain exactly why this is happening? I'm particularly surprised because the excellent jQuery is normally browser-independent.

• Why does Tex/Latex not speed up in subsequent runs?

  I really wonder, why even recent systems of Tex/Latex do not use any caching to speed up later runs. Every time that I fix a single comma*, calling Latex costs me about the same amount of time, because it needs to load and convert every single picture file. (* I know that even changing a tiny comma could affect the whole structure but of course, a well-written cache format could see the impact of that. Also, there might be situations where 100% correctness is not needed as long as it’s fast.) Is there something in the language of Tex which makes this complicated or impossible to accomplish or is it just that in the original implementation of Tex, there was no need for this (because it would have been slow anyway on those large computers)? But then on the other hand, why doesn’t this annoy other people so much that they’ve started a fork which has some sort of caching (or transparent conversion of Tex files to a format which is faster to parse)? Is there anything I can do to speed up subsequent runs of Latex? Except from putting all the stuff into chapterXX.tex files and then commenting them out?

• Java CountDownLatch used to wait for JFrame to dispose

  I have referenced this previous question as well as other sources, but cannot get CountDownLatch to work correctly. Background: mainFrame creates new Frame called dataEntryFrame. When dataEntryFrame "Submit" button is clicked, record added to database and dataEntryFrame disposed. At this point, mainFrame should clear and reload a jList that shows all records. Issue: When dataEntryFrame loads, java freezes, dataEntryFrame components never load. I cannot get past this part... then, in the DataEntryFrame, CountDownLatch should only decrements after the submit button is clicked, successfully adds a record to a database table, and disposes itself. Or when the user clicks cancel...   I read somewhere (and have observed) that starting threads is slow. I always assumed that AsyncTask created and reused a single thread because it required being started inside the UI thread. The following (anonymized) code is called from a ListAdapter's getView method to load images asynchronously.   On a website, I want to display the main navigation as an unordered list. After 3 items I want to close that list and open a new one, so it eventually looks something like this: <div id="navigation"> <ul> <li>1</li> <li>2</li> <li>3</li> </ul> <ul> <li>4</li> <li>5</li> <li>6</li> </ul> </div> The navigation is dynmically generated using jQuery + Ajax. This is what the code I'm using looks like: $.getJSON("load.php", { some: value }, function(data) { $.each(data.items, function(i, item) { $('#navigation').find('ul').append('<li>' + i + '</li>'); if(i % 3 == 0) { $('#navigation').find('ul').append('</ul><ul>'); } }); }); Unfortunately, the browser doesn't interpret this right and treats the closing ul tag as a nested object of the first ul. How do I fix this?

• Is it OK to use WPF assemblies in a web app?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 app targeting .NET 4 that needs to be able to resize images on the fly and write them to the response. I have code that does this and it works. I am using System.Drawing.dll. However, I want to enhance my code so that not only am I resizing the image, but I am dropping it from 24bpp down to 4bit grayscale. I could not, for the life of me, find code on how to do this with System.Drawing.dll. But I did find a bunch of WPF stuff. If anyone knows how to drop the bit depth without all this WPF stuff (which I barely understand, BTW) I would be thrilled to see that too.

  I am looking that chapter 8 of the RedHat, JBoss documentation. I am trying to setup Certificate Authentication as described on this page . On the page it says that the login-config file should have this in it: <application-policy name="jmx-console"> <authentication> <login-module code="org.jboss.security.auth.spi.BaseCertLoginModule" flag="required"> <module-option name="password-stacking">useFirstPass</module-option> <module-option name="securityDomain">java:/jaas/jmx-console</module-option> </login-module> <login-module code="org.jboss.security.auth.spi.UsersRolesLoginModule" flag="required"> <module-option name="password-stacking">useFirstPass</module-option> <module-option name="usersProperties">jmx-console-users.properties</module-option> <module-option name="rolesProperties">jmx-console-roles.properties</module-option> </login-module> </authentication> </application-policy> I think that the BaseCertLoginModule chekcs the clients server and the UsersRolesloginModule assigns the client to role (using the file jmx-console-roles.properties). However I am completely bewildered as to what should be in this file: jmx-console-users.properties. Normally that file stores user/password pairs (source) but when using client-cert I don't think that there should be passwords in there. Right now I am leaving that file empty but I am getting this exception: [org.jboss.security.auth.spi.UsersRolesLoginModule.initialize:135] Failed to load users/passwords/role files java.io.IOException: No properties file: users.properties or defaults: defaultUsers.properties found ... What should be in that file? Thanks.

I imagine the problem is in this line: ve.setProperty(RuntimeConstants.FILE_RESOURCE_LOADER_PATH, file.getAbsolutePath()); Because in a jar the absolute file does not exist, since it's inside a zip, but I couldn't yet find a better way to do it. • How to remove Modules from a Intellij Maven Project permanently?

  I am currently working on a larger scale Maven-based project in IntelliJIdea 12.1.6 Ultimate. I have been working with IntelliJIdea since about 5 months. An included module has dependencies on another module. The dependent module's source was also part of my project until recently. Since I removed the dependent module from my project, I get compile errors whenever I am trying to compile the source without maven. The pom.xml of removed modules in Intellij seem to be placed onto the Settings-Maven-Ignored Files. I cant seem to remove it from there, only check or uncheck it. It's not possible to include the module again since IntelliJ will say its still under Ignored Files. 2 ways allow me to compile again: Uncheck the pom from Ignored files, which will include the module again in my project. Or delete the source of the dependent project, so my project will load the dependent module from the maven repository. But whenever I update my project from svn, the source of the dependent module is restored (I don't know why this even happens since its not part my project) and the cycle begins anew. I googled this for a while since it gets really annoying. It became a problem with several excluded modules. I could rebuild the intellij-project but since a lot of IntelliJ settings were made (not related to the problem) I would rather solve this. Any help is appreciated, I guess I must be missing something

  I am trying to create a javascript function to add and remove a class to a list element based on the #tag at the end of the url on a page. The page has several different states, each with a different # in the url. • Cast object to interface when created via reflection

  I'm trying some stuff out in Android and I'm stuck at when trying to cast a class in another .apk to my interface. I have the interface and various classes in other .apks that implement that interface. I find the other classes using PackageManager's query methods and use Application#createPackageContext() to get the classloader for that context. I then load the class, create a new instance and try to cast it to my interface, which I know it definitely implements. When I try to cast, it throws a class cast exception. I tried various things like loading the interface first, using Class#asSubclass, etc, none of which work. Class#getInterfaces() shows the interface is implemented. • Unity Configuration and Same Assembly

  I'm currently getting an error trying to resolve my IDataAccess class. The value of the property 'type' cannot be parsed. The error is: Could not load file or assembly 'TestProject' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. (C:\Source\TestIoC\src\TestIoC\TestProject\bin\Debug\TestProject.vshost.exe.config line 14) This is inside a WPF Application project. What is the correct syntax to refer to the Assembly you are currently in? is there a way to do this? I know in a larger solution I would be pulling Types from seperate assemblies so this might not be an issue. But what is the right way to do this for a small self-contained test project. Note: I'm only interested in doing the XML config at this time, not the C# (in code) config. • Dynamic Control loading at wrong time?

  This one is a little... odd. Basically I have a form I'm building using ASP.NET Dynamic Data, which is going to utilize several custom field templates. I've just added another field to the FormView, with it's own custom template, and the form is loading that control twice for no apparent reason. Worse yet, the first time it loads the template, the Row is not ready yet and I get the error message: {"Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control."} I'm accessing the Row variable in a LinqDataSource OnSelected event in order to get the child object... Now for the wierd part: If I reorder the fields a little, the one causing the problem no longer gets loaded twice. Any thoughts? EDIT: I've noticed that Page_Load gets called on the first load (when Row throws an exception if you try to use it) but does NOT get called the second time around. If that helps any... Right now managing it by just catching and ignoring the exception, but still a little worried that things will break if I don't find the real cause. EDIT 2: I've traced the problem to using FindControl recursively to find other controls on the page. Apparently FindControl can cause the page lifecycle events (at least up to page_load) to fire... and this occurs before that page "should" be loading so it's dynamic data "stuff" isn't ready yet.

• movie does not start in full screen in flash video player

  We have this legacy code of a flash video player that functions well enough but still has some loose ends I need to tighten up. It can do the basic "switch to full screen and back to normal size" stunts, however with one exception. I want to know , am i doing at good/standard way, ContactRepository Contact GetByID() Contact GetAll() COntactTagRepository List<ContactTag> Get(long contactID) List<ContactTag> GetAll() List<ContactTagDetail> GetAllDetails() class ContactTagDetail { public Contact Contact {get;set;} public ContactTag COntactTag {get;set;} } When i need a contact i call method in contactrepository, same for contacttag but when i need contact and tags together i call GetDetais() in ContactTag repository its not returning the COntactTag entity generated by the orm insted its returning ContactTagDetail entity conatining both COntact and COntactTag generated by the orm, i know i can simple call GetAll in COntactTag repository and can access Contact.ContactTag but as its linq to sql it will there is no option to Deferred Load in query level, so whenever i need a entity with a related entity i create a projection class Another doubt is where i really need to right the method i can do it in both contact & ContactTag repostitory like In contact repository GetALlWithTags() or something but i am doing it in in COntactTag repository Whats your suggestions ?

• iPhone: Leak with UIWebView loading Office documents. Any ideas how to avoid it?

  While there are already quite a few posts about leaks around UIWebView, mine is a bit more special, I believe, and thus deserves its own post here. I see a reproducible large leak every time I load a Office document such as a Word or Excel file. For instance, every time I display a 180KB .doc file, I get a 100KB leak. And that happens with both the simulator and an actual device, running OS 3.1.3. The leak is not visible with the Leaks instrument but only by looking at the malloc instances via the ObjectAlloc instrument. Here's a picture from the instruments trace: I've also made a demo project, UIWebView-Leak.zip, so you can verify this yourself. To see the leak, use the ObjectAlloc instrument, switch to the view where you see individual allocation objects, and sort by size so that you see the large ones in a group, just like in my picture above. Then view a Office document a few times and find the Malloc objects that keep staying "Live" even after the actual UIWebView has been freed. Is this a known bug? Or is there any way I can avoid these leaks? I.e, have you successfully shown Office documents on an iPhone withing getting such leaks? Note: I've reported this as a bug to Apple now, too (ID 7950594) I am still waiting for someone (including Apple) to confirm this as a true leak or show why it isn't (i.e. that I do something wrong or make wrong assumptions)
