• 'Situations gone wrong' for web apps...

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place? Am looking to gather feedback in general, so don't worry if your example is industry/technology specific - so long as it pertains to web. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your responses!

• How can I convince my company to move to MVC?

  I currently write web apps using asp.net web forms and getting my company to move to another technology is like [insert funny line here]. I would really like to start writing apps using MVC, but they fear any type of change. How is the best way to convince/ease them into using MVC? I guess this can go for moving to any new technology. Update Decided to go the rogue developer route and just started using it. I recreated a small app in MVC and learned the ropes that way, and moved up from there.

• How to fix "maximum number of clients reached"?

  About 30 Oct I ran recent updates for 12.04 64bit. No errors occurred. Next day when I booted computer most apps would not start or if started (eg Chrome) other app windows do not appear. Trying a command line start on most apps gives this message: "Maximum number of clients reachedError: cannot open display: :0" The 'error' part of message not always the same. Have tried to find solution on Ubuntu forums and other Linux web sites, but cannot find a solution. HELP please.

• Why is it taking so long to open the Ubuntu Help Center?

  When I click on the Help Center Icon in the 'System' menu, it takes more than a minute to launch the program. More than a minute, for a text only program seeming like a website! All my other programs work fine, and I saw this problem also on other computers. Is there a reason for this? Will it be fixed? I think it is an important issue for beginners. • How do I install xulrunner in 12.04?

  I am trying to migrate a virtual machine I use for my classes at the university from 10.04 to 12.04 and in that I am using xulrunner so that first, I can have SQLiteManager as a stand alone app next, KNIME can provide help for its nodes I tried adding the the mozilla ppa as described in some posts, e.g. here or here, but when I search for xulrunner in Synaptic I get no match. I read in this link, that xulrunner was left out intentionally, which, frankly, I think is a bad decision! Anyway, does anyone know a way out of this, i.e. how to get xulrunner for 12.04? Any help appreciated!

• Loud fans despite cool system under Linux (but not Windows)

  My new desktop computer runs almost silently under Windows, but the fans seem to run on a constantly high setting under Linux. Psensor shows that the GPU (with NVidia drivers) is thirty-something degrees and the CPU is about the same, so it's not just down to Linux somehow being more processor-intensive. I've read that the BIOS controls the fans under Linux, which makes sense given the high fan speeds when in BIOS as well. It's under Windows, when the ASUS AI Suite 3 software seems to take control, that the system runs more quietly and only speeds the fans up when required. So is there a Linux app which offers a similar dynamic control of the fans, or a setting hidden somewhere in the ASUS BIOS which allows the same but regardless of the OS? EDIT - I've tried using lm-sensors and fancontrol, but pwmconfig tells me "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed". This is after the sensors-detect command does find an 'Intel digital thermal sensor', and despite the sensors working fine in apps like psensor. Help getting this to work would likely solve the problem.

  I don't have any experience writing .sh files. I want to run the pvm2raw utility of this app from the Volume Library. • Develop an android and iPhone application with shared database

  I have a great idea for smartphone application, And I want to develop an application suited for both android and iPhone. In addition I need to use spatial database for geo indexing that will be shared for both applications. I am new to this app world and I have some questions. Is there away to develop for both machines? I know java but not objective c. My guess is that I need to separate the database from the computing to support both applications. What are the best cloud computing providers with spatial database support that can host the server? Do I need 2 hosting servers or there is one server the can support the both of them? which database provider can support geo indexing and support this intergraion, I prefer providers with reasonable free quotas.   I want to create an application and maybe upload it to the play store but I am not sure if that what my app does is legal or not. I am downloading a page's source from a website to get some information I need. For example if I download a page about the song "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin and parse this page source to get the song's name, maybe a link to an image and the lyrics. Would that be illegal or can I display these information to my users without getting any problem? Also the website says it's an "open 'wiki-style' [...].It's completely user built by people like you and used every day by fans and developers alike."

• Techniques and methods to improve and speedup development

  I just got a new project. It’s a WinForm app. And it’s interesting because I will have the possibility to learn how fish farms work and are managed. I will have to develop touch interfaces, and use datasnap to communicate and sync data between farm and office. The development will be done in DELPHI win32, still not sure about the database, but maybe SQLlite. So now comes the difficult part of the project, building it. I am just finishing one. It took me a lot of time to do it and I am a bit “burned out”. I will have time to relax, not much, but a few days. What I am looking is some tips and tricks and possibly tools to be able to speed up the development. It must be up and running in 2 months. So what tricks do you use to speed up things?

  So I'm working on this code browser mostly to help me with my fading memory. In the app I want to be able to launch a url. • WINDOWS 7 DEAD BLUE SCREEN DOES NOT REBOOT OR INSTALL NEW WIN OS

  Windows died. So, I installed ubuntu, and have had difficulties downloading apps from the internet like skype or realplayer... etc. And It does not recognize my password. I needed to install drivers for my wireless from cd-rom. It does not show where to save new downloaded files and programs, and app and does not show how to install like windows does. So I would like to go back to windows. Window does not not start up anymore and I can not get safe mode with F8. It goes to black screen only and none of other parameters work when press f8! Any help is highly valued.

• Is it important to obfuscate C++ application code?

  In the Java world, it seems to sometimes be a problem, but, what about C++? Are there different solutions? I was thinking about the fact that someone can replace the C++ library of a specific OS with a different version of the same library, but full of debug symbols to understand what my code does. IS tt a good thing to use standard or popular libraries? This can also happen with some dll library under Windows replaced with the "debug version" of that library. Is it better to prefer static compilation? In commercial applications, I see that for the core of their app they compile everything statically and for the most part the dlls (dynamic libraries in general) are used to offer some third party technologies like anti-piracy solutions (I see this in many games), GUI library (like Qt), OS libraries, etc. Is static compilation the equivalent to obfuscation in the Java world? In better terms, is it the best and most affordable solution to protect your code?

• Arguments for or against using Try/Catch as logical operators

  I just discovered some lovely code in our companies app that uses Try-Catch blocks as logical operators. Meaning, "do some code, if that throws this error, do this code, but if that throws this error do this 3rd thing instead". It uses "Finally" as the "else" statement it appears. I know that this is wrong inherently, but before I go picking a fight I was hoping for some well thought out arguments. And hey, if you have arguments FOR the use of Try-Catch in this manner, please do tell. EDIT For any who are wondering, the language is C# and the code in question is about 30+ lines and is looking for specific exceptions, it is not handling ALL exceptions.
