Your mission: organize the development of the next killer app. 25 developers is too much to take care of each individually, so what decision(s) you would make to motivate them? • Windows Phone 8 Launch Event Summary

  Today was the official coming out party for Windows Phone 8.  Below is a summary of the launch event.  There is a lot here to stay with me. They started with a commercial staring Joe Belfiore show how his Windows Phone 8 was personal too him which highlights something I think Microsoft has done well over the last couple of event: spotlight how Windows Phone is a different experience from other smartphones.  Joe actually called iPhone and Android “tired old metaphors" and explained that the idea around Windows Phone was to “reinvent the smartphone around you” as “the most personal smartphone operating system”.  The is the message that they need to drive home in their adds. The only real technical aspect we found out was that they have optimized the operating system around the dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip set.  It seems like all of the other hardware goodies had already been announced.  The remainder of the event was centered around new features of the OS and app announcements. So what are we getting?  The integrated features included lock screen live tile, Data Sense, Rooms and Kids corner.  There wasn’t a lot of information about it, but Joe also talked about apps not just having live tiles, but being live apps that could integrate with wallet and the hub. The lock screen will now be able to be personalized with live tile data or even a photo slide show.  This gives the lock screen an even better ability to give you the information you want to know before you even unlock the phone. The Kids Corner allows you as a parent to setup an area on your phone that you kids can go into an use it without disturbing your apps.  They can play games or use apps that you have designated and will only see those apps.  It even has a special lock screen gesture just for the kids corner. Rooms allow you to organize your phone around the groups of people in your life.  You get a shared calendar, a room wall as well as shared notes beyond just being able to send messages to a group.  You can also invite people not on the Windows Phone platform to access an online version of the room. Data Sense is a new feature that gives you better control and understanding of your data plan usage.  You can see which applications are using data and it can automatically adjust they way your phone behaves as you get close to your data limit. Add to these features the fact that the entire Windows ecosystem is integrated with SkyDrive and you have an available anywhere experience that is unequaled by any other platform.  Your document, photos and music are available on your Windows Phone, Window 8 device and Xbox.  SkyDrive also doesn’t limit how long you can keep files like the competing cloud platforms and give more free storage. It was interesting the way they made the launch event more personal.  First Joe brought out his own kids to demo the Kids Corner.  They followed this up by bringing out Jessica Alba to discuss her experience on the Windows Phone 8.  They need to keep putting a face on the product instead of just showing features as a cold list. Then we get to apps.  We knew that the new Skype was coming, but we found out that it was created in such a way that it can receive calls without running consistently in the background which would eat up battery.  This announcement was follow by the coming Facebook app that is optimized for Windows Phone 8.  As a matter of fact they indicated that just after launch the marketplace would have 46 out of the top 50 apps used by all smartphone platforms.  In a rational world this tide with over 120,000 apps currently in the marketplace there should be no more argument about the Windows Phone ecosystem. For those of us who develop for Windows Phone and weren’t on the early adoption program will finally get access to the SDK tomorrow after an announcement at Build (more waiting).  Perhaps we will get a few new features then. • Need some help on tomcat URL mod_rewrite or mod_jk

  I am trying to remove the context name from the url of my server. Current URL - http://www.domainname.com/MyApp/ What I need to make is to make it avaialble at - www.domainname.com/ So it is only going to host one main app and that needs to be displayed when we open www.domainname.com/ on browser. I have already tried couple of things like below - RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/(Context/.*)$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /Context/$1 [P,L] OR redirect permanent /MyApp/ abcd://domainname.com OR Using JKMount - JkMount /MyApp/* ajp13 JkMount /MyApp* ajp13 OR Deploy war file to ROOT of tomcat and make relevant chagnes in web and server.xml All of these aren't working and I keep getting a intenal error. • Do I have to learn html and javascript to create web applications?

  I am an experienced Java programmer, and I want to create a complex web application requiring dynamic pages, drawings, etc (take SO as an example). Do I have to learn javascript/html in order to create such an application? It is not that I don't want to learn another language (I've done this before), but technology on the javascript environment seems to change so fast that when you finish learning one framework it is already obsolete. I have checked a number of java framework for web development (spring, play), but not deeply. So can these frameworks (or other possible java frameworks that I'm not aware of) be used without learning html/javascript? I also have some python experience. So if I can do the app in python it is also an option.

• Best way of accessing data on different pages

  I'm looking for a way to load data into properties/variables etc and have this information accessible to all the pages of my app. I want the information to be loaded via a background thread to keep UI thread free. Some of the pages will have various properties of their controls binding to these global properties. Here is what I tried. Created a static class. All pages could access the data but can't bind. Changed the static class to a Singleton and used DependencyProperty's. All pages could access data and binding worked fine but cross-threading issues when accessing via background threads. I have read in various places on this subject but haven't really come up with the best method yet for my situation.

• How to organize my site's file system properly?

  Doing some reading on Stack Overflow, I've found a lot of information suggesting that proper organization of a file system is crucial to a well-written web app. One of the key pieces of evidence is high-frequency references to "separation of concerns" in questions related to keeping programs organized. Now, I've found some information on organizing file systems (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard) from 2004. It raises only two concerns: first, the standard's a bit dated, so I believe it may be possible to do better given the changes in technology over the past 8 years; second, and most important, my application is very small compared to an entire Linux distro. I think that the file system should be organized very differently because of that. Here's what I'm looking at, currently: /scripts, /databases, /www -> /dev, /production -> login, router, admin pages, /sites -> content types, static pages /modules, /includes, /css, /media -> /module-specific-media

• What Are Some Tips For Writing A Large Number of Unit Tests?

  I've recently been tasked with testing some COM objects of the desktop app I work on. What this means in practice is writing a large number (100) unit tests to test different but related methods and objects. While the unit tests themselves are fairly straight forward (usually one or two Assert()-type checks per test), I'm struggling to figure out the best way to write these tests in a coherent, organized manner. What I have found is that copy and Paste coding should be avoided. It creates more problems than it's worth, and it's even worse than copy-and-paste code in production code because test code has to be more frequently updated and modified. I'm leaning toward trying an OO-approach using but again, the sheer number makes even this approach daunting from an organizational standpoint due to concern with maintenance. It also doesn't help that the tests are currently written in C++, which adds some complexity with memory management issues. Any thoughts or suggestions?

• Dynamically rewrite URLs upon the user's selection - is it possible?

  In my PHP based web application, there's a form that generates a URL according to the user's selection. The form has 7 different fields, each one of them affects the final URL, none of them is mandatory. The final URL can be: /field1/user_setting_of_field1/field3/user_setting_of_field3/field6/user_setting_of_field6/ or just: /field4/user_setting_of_field4 these URLs should be rewritten to- /results.php?field1=user_setting_of_field1&field3=user_setting_of_field3&field6=user_setting_of_field6 and: /results.php?field4=user_setting_of_field4 Is it possible to create a single rewrite rule that will cover these variations? I'd hate to create different rewrite rule for every possible scenario, it'll take forever... I'm currently developing the app on a Windows machine with IIS 7.5, but will eventually deploy it to an Apache server. Is it possible in both? I currently need to solve it for the IIS environment, and later on for Apache.

• Disadvantages of a fake phpMyAdmin honeypot that causes ip blacklisting and robots.txt disallow/exclusion of the honeypot?

  I'm trying to figure out whether I should set up a honeypot system with a fake phpMyAdmin (site gets hits all the time with people spidering for insecurities with that app). My thought was to create a honeypot php script that would mimic a phpMyAdmin login, and then blacklist ips that hit that url (and aren't already whitelisted). I would then add the appropriate urls to the robots.txt so that spiders that actually respect my robots.txt wouldn't be caught by the blacklist. Are there disadvantages to this approach, do legit robots sometimes not respect robots.txt in certain circumstances, are there any problems with this that I should consider in advance?

• Futures/Monads vs Events

  So, the question is quite simple: in an application framework, when performance impact can be ignored (10-20 events per second at max), what is more maintainable and flexible to use as a preferred medium for communication between modules - Events or Futures/Promices/Monads ? Its often being said, that Events (pub/sub, mediator) allow loose-coupling and thus - more maintainable app... My experience deny this: once you have more that 20+ events - debugging becomes hard, and so is refactoring - because it is very hard to see: who, when and why uses what. Promices (i'm coding in javascript) are much uglier and dumber, than Events. But: you can clearly see connections between function calls, so application logic becomes more straight-forward. What i'm afraid. though, is that Promices will bring more hard-coupling with them... p.s: the answer does not have to be based on JS, experience from other functional languages is much welcome.

When internationalizing an app, what pattern(s) are useful for handling messages with possible pluralization? What about messages with multiple possible pluralization? For example: "N review(s):" One pattern would be reviews.title.singular="{0} review:" reviews.title.singular="{0} reviews:" And this may not support all languages. Or a more complicated case: "Found M question(s) with N comment(s)." This would be difficult to support in English?

• Abandoment to blame for the last JavaScript file not always being loaded?

  I have a code snippet for an app that users are loading as a 3rd party script on their site. The general sequence is as follows: Site loads http://www.example.com/foo.js foo.js does stuff 1 to 2 seconds later, foo.js loads bar.js Now in a perfect world, I'd want to see matching counts for the calls to foo.js and bar.js. However, bar.js loads only about 94% of the time. I'm wondering how much of this discrepancy might be attributable to site abandonment given the fact that bar.js is delayed by 1 or 2 seconds. I posted here instead of StackOverflow since I think it's more a question about what would be typical time on page when users abandon the page.

• Time it would take me to learn c++ given my speed? [closed]

  I am a student in second year of engineering and my life is hard, nowadays. To make my future secure and at least get good jobs, I have started learning C++; I have learned J2SE, ASP.NET (little, basic C#), PHP (little), HTML, CSS, AJAX, Javascript, SQL, a little android development (I have built a benchmark app) in 4 months and have received 1 gold medal in CSS and 1 each in HTML, CSS, Java. I am able to make things in C#, Java and all other, so I can apply all this knowledge. I was able to do all this, because I loved learning and I hate to ask this question. How much time would it take me to learn C++, good-enough to get good jobs at Google, Microsoft? I am currently learning data structures, so that's excluded.

• Print Problem: Page Squeezed in Half

  I've just managed to successfully set up my printer (Canon MX320) using the Printing app on Ubuntu 12.04. However the only 1 remaining problem is that each time I tried to print it will only print the file on the top half of the page only: meaning that for some reason, the printer "squeezes" the whole content of each page in the file to fit into the top half of the page only (so the proportion in the print-out is not correct vertically). This happens with every type of file I tried to print (Documents, Images, Web pages). I checked the Printing's setting & properties and couldn't find anything related to this issue yet and I've already made sure to set all the information correct (paper size, source etc.). The Print Preview always display correctly on the screen, but it's only the actual print-out that shows this problem. I also tried with several different types of papers (A4, photos etc.) but the result is always the same: the printer keeps putting the content in the top half of the paper only.

• Best database setup for one click games

  I am building a one click game website/mobile app, and I am debating between using MySQL and MongoDB for the backend. The way I have been exploring it is with a NodeJS/Express/Angular/Passport/MongoDB stack - I have also implemented Socket.io. I have gotten to the point where I am sending data from the flash game to the server (NodeJS). The only data that needs to be sent is basic user information, the players score at the end of each game, and some x,y positions for each players game (for anti-cheating). It seems like MySQL would work fine, but as I am already using MongoDB - are there any major drawbacks to continuing to work with MongoDB on this project?

• What languages do you support when localizing?

  I recently converted an iphone app to support different languages, and was wondering which ones I should include, and which ones aren't worth the trouble. What I mean by that is best illustrated by an example. In Ireland, the Irish language is spoken by very few of the people there. It could be considered a dying language. Almost everybody speaks English (if not everybody). So in this example, I don't think it's worth the trouble to support. In addition, the number of people using modern technology may be limited as well. For example, most people in Cambodia would not be likely to purchase software, and therefore the benefits of localization are reduced. What languages do you support when localizing?

• How to disable Gnome-Shell auto-open in Dashboard

  I am personalising my Gnome-Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 I would like to disable the feature to open the Gnome's Dashboard when I close the last Window in a Workspace. Edit to clarify: The dashboard is available only in GNOME Shell. The dashboard opens if you press the windows key (aka SUPER) or if you move the mouse to the upper left corner. If you close the last window of a workspace, but there are open windows on other workspaces, the dashboard opens automatically. The latter behaviour is annoying if you do not want to use the dashboard to open new windows or to change workspace. There are many ways to to both (Gnome do, Docky, keyboard shortcuts, clicking on something on the desktop, ...). • Is it Possible to Repair Boot Record on Windows Vista Partition on Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.04.02 LTS Install?

  I recently successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04.02 Desktop as a "side-by-side" on an eMachines ET1641-02w PC; which before had Windows Vista; but was no longer bootable, because the boot sector somehow got trashed. After I installed Ubuntu I can go to Devices/OS and I can access all of my docs, pics, videos, music, etc. on the Windows Vista partition; but I still can't "boot" the Windows partition. I've seen several posts regarding recovering boot sectors using the Boot-repair app; but am wondering if this "boot-repair" is only for the Ubuntu partition. Can I use "boot-repair" to repair the Windows Vista boot sector?

• What language(s) do I need to learn in order to develop an application like this?

  I have an idea for making a web application. Ideally this application would have products which prices are increased each time a Retweet of the product at hand is made. Kind of like bids with tweets. Unfortunately my web development knowledge is very scarce. I know just basic HTML, virtually no CSS and that's it. I'm kindly asking for your insights on what you think would be best for making a web app like this. I have no good idea of where to start or what I need to get going. • Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome-Shell : can't see nor launch apps except with Alt + F2

  I've installed Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome-Shell 3.6. Everything worked fine till the moment I've began to customize the main menu (apps wich appears in Dash and so on). I don't know wether I've done something wrong or if there is a bug : suddenly, the Dash became empty. My favourite docks too, except the "Show apps" button. When I activate it, there is only an empty dash, no apps showed. The only way I can access an app is using the "Alt+F2" shortcut. I've tried to restart gnome-shell (Alt-F2 / r) but nothing has changed... A logout and a reboot have not changed ... Do you know how to repair the gnome-shell ? Thanks for your help...

• Changes to myApp.js files are reverted back to normal when the project is build - Cocos2dx

  I am trying to do some changes to my myApp.js file of coco2dx project for android in eclipse but I am not able to do it. I am actually trying to change the default background image of my app. But when I run my project all the changes goes back to before values For Eg: This is the default line wer we are setting our background image this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/HelloWorld.png"); I am changing it to the following line: this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/CloseNormal.png"); But when I run my project CloseNormal.png goes back to HelloWorld.png I am using: OS: Win7 Cocos2d Ver: cocos2dx 2.2.2 Why is this happening. Can anybody help me?
