    How to start, shutdown and restart tomcat as non-root user. I have tomcat5.x installed on ubuntu machine(usr/share/tomcat). The tomcat directory has full permissions.   • (help help!!!) Easy_install the wrong version of python modules (Mac OS)

    I installed Python 2.7 in my mac. The Python version is correct here. But when I try to easy_install some modules. The system will install the modules with python version 2.6 which are not able be imported to Python 2.7. And of course I can not do the functions I need in my code.   • How To Replace Laptop HDD Without Losing Data?

    Hello, I recently went to Dell Service center and they tell that HDD is faulty and needs to be replaced. I have a Studio 1457 laptop with 500 GB HDD and don't want to lose the data(purchased in May 2010, still under warranty). I have searched a bit and I think it may be best to use a disk imaging software for this task. However, I don't know about a good software. I have following steps in mind: Get a 1 TB External HDD. Make an image of existing 500 GB HDD and store data on external disk. Install new HDD and install a brand new Windows copy and then install the software on it. Using the same software I used to make image, restore the old HDD image on new one. However, I have some questions in mind. First, is this possible? Second, I live in a country where piracy is a big issue and I am sure the support executive who will come to change HDD will have a pirated copy. But I have genuine Windows 7 Pro and don't want to lose it. Now, Dell does not supply and OS disks, so I can't install it on new HDD! If I follow above steps, which version of Windows 7 will be retained? One in the image(authentic) or one in the new HDD(pirated). I am ready to purchase a good software for this task and my budget is $50-60. Since laptop is under warranty, new HDD will be free. One last thing, I have created a Windows Migration file whose size is 70 GB. Can it be used to move from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 7 Pro?(In case I get a genuine copy of Windows 7!)     I was in my BIOS setup turning on VT-x support today and saw these other settings. A little googling indicates that they each seem to turn on some sort of optimization to do with the CPU's L2 cache. They were all turned off by default. The processor in question is an Intel Xeon quad-core 3.4GHz (X5492). My OS is Linux 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 23 16:04:50 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I have 4GB of RAM if that matters. Here's what the BIOS manufacturer has to say: Snoop Filter Enabling the snoop filter typically improves performance by reducing snoop traffic on the frontside bus in dual processor configurations. Well I like the sound of improved performance. Why would the BIOS have this off by default? Or by dual processor do they not mean multi-core? Regardless, is there a downside if this is on? ACL Prefetch When enabled, the Adjacent Cache Line Prefetcher fetches both cache lines that comprise a cache line pair when it determines required data is not currently in its cache. When disabled, the processor will only fetch the cache line required by the processor. HW Prefetch Fetches an extra line of data into L2 from external memory. Both of these sound like optimizations that have some drawbacks. What are the reasons to turn them on? What are the reasons to leave them off. Why is the default off?

    Hi, I have a flash drive that I used not too much but, after few month of inactivity, it died. I know that flash drives have a limited write cycles but I am sure that this is not the problem. I tried to create a new partition table and format the drive nothing worked.   • Samba 'include' a per user config script

    It is possible to use the include = /somepath/%u.smb.conf in the global section to call a script /somepath/cb0.smb.conf if the user cb0 connects to the samba server. Unfortunately this does not wotk for me because testparm alway gives me Can't find include file /somepath/.smb.conf When I connect to the server I can enter a username and pass but it alway rejects the connection. I'm using Samba Version 3.2.5 How can I achieve to load a custom user script depending on the user that is connecting ?

  • HP Laserjet 1320 drivers for Windows 7

    Background I replaced som XP computers with Win 7 computers. We have a HP Laserjet 1320dn printer attached to the LAN. The XP computers could print to it from Word in duplex mode without any issues. Problem The Win 7 computers downloaded a full set of drivers including a "HP Laserjet 1320 PCL5" driver. However using this, Word's page footers cause extra pages to be printed with just a letter or so at a time from the footer. Some other apps have similar issues. I also have an ancient Laserjet 1200 attached to the LAN via a Jetdirect box and that works just fine. So I don't think the problem is with Word (the computers came with Word 2010 starter). What I tried I wrangled the control-panel new printer dialogue into using a "HP Laserjet 2100 PS" driver for the HP Laserjet 1320dn. Now my Word documents print as they should. However I don't have a duplex option on the print dialogue. I'd really like to be able to use duplex printing. Question Windows used to have a Universal Postscript driver that read a Postscript Printer Definition (PPD) file to make the printer's features available (tray choice, duplex etc). I can't see any way to do this in Windows 7. Is there a way? Is there any other way I can get Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to print properly to a HP Laserjet 1320dn and have access to all it's major features? Addendum: My page in Word looks like this: +--------------------+ | aa bb cc | | | | lorem ipsum dolor | | | ... | | | pp qq rr | +--------------------+ The headers and footers were inserted using Insert - header - blank (3 column). When printed I get 1 page with aa, bb, cc, pp in correct position (no other text) 1 blank page 1 page with qq in correct position (no other text) 1 blank page 1 page with rr in correct position (no other text) 1 blank page 1 page with lorem ipsum dolor in correct position (no headers or footers) If I use a Laserjet 2100 driver I get 1 correct page.

We have a group that runs this application within a Citrix session and the truly networked printers function perfectly but shared printers that work well outside of Citrix become unreachable. Printers do not need to be defined on the machine running the report for the system to work. There is something in the way Critrix passes the information to the destination UNC that I don’t understand.

  • windows 7 turns off itself everyday at about 9am

    I was given this comp at work and after a week or so this strange thing started to happen in the middle of doing something :-( It turns off itself at about 9.10am every morning Just once a day and it works fine after it had it little nap. it happens both if the comp was on all night or I turned it off before leaving the office. I tried to swapped the memory as I was told that there was an issue with memory. But moving or removing any memory did not make any difference. I am not aware that I would install any program that could cause that. I installed AVG and set it up to do every day scan about 8am + if restart is needed it requires user confirmation. 'The Software Protection service has stopped' few minutes before it turned off itself but it happened also at other times without the computer turned off. I turned off Windows automatic updates as the first thing when I got the comp configuration Windows 7 Ultimate Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 at 2.8GH, 8GB RAM ST31000528AS Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 3Gb/s 1TB Update Below message are logged when I turn the comp on again. Message 1: The previous system shutdown at 9:08:54 AM on ?6/?29/?2010 was unexpected. Message 2: Level:Critical Source: Kernel Power EventID 41 Task Category (63) The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Log after manual restart Update 2 (task scheduler)

By initializing the mac and ip addresses of the sent message to the given, when the network router recives the message he should pass it to the computer with the same mac address...right?   • New SBS 2011 installation (not migration) in an existing 2008 R2 domain

    My current network setup has two servers: a Windows 2008 R2 with TMG 2010 as edge firewall (TMG server), a second 2008 R2 with DC, DNS and Hyper-V roles (DCDNS server). I was trying to install SBS 2011 as a child partition on DCDNS, first I installed SBS 2011 in English and did the migration successfully. However, later on, I found that I can't change the display language in SBS 2011 once it's installed (but the clients require a different language), so I had to re-install the SBS in a different language. It is during the re-installation that the problem came up: the migration can't be completed with some error message stating "can't access the source server". I re-ran the migration preparation tool, but it didn't make any difference. I wonder if it's because the source server can only be "migrated" once. Since I only need to setup a handful of users and computers, so I decided to do a new install of SBS and picked a different domain name. But I can't get the SBS to connect to LAN: it can't ping other servers, neither can other servers ping the SBS server. I've tried to stop the DC/DNS services on DCDNS and restart SBS, but with no difference. Anyone has idea how to fix this problem?

  • Internet Explorer not working after establishing a SSTP VPN connection

    I have a problem which is constantly appearing on each Windows 7 computer I'm using, whenever I establish a SSTP VPN connection to a ForeFront TMG 2010 firewall; it only happens with SSTP connections, not PPTP/L2TP ones. The problem appears only if using a proxy server for Internet access; it doesn't happen when directly accessing the Internet (with or without NAT). It doesn't seem to depend on a specific proxy software being used (I've seen it happening with various ones). The problem is: as soon as I start the VPN connection, Internet Explorer can't access anything anymore. I'm not using the VPN connection as a default gateway, and I can succesfully ping the proxy server after the VPN connection is esatablished (and even telnet to its 8080 TCP port), so this is definitely not a routing problem. Also, the problem is specifically related to Internet Explorer: while it seems not able to connect to any site, other programs (such as FireFox) have no problem accessing the Internet through the same proxy. This behaviour can be easily reproduced on any Windows 7 computer (the service pack and patch level doesn't seem to matter at all). Have IE connect through a proxy, establish a SSTP VPN connection... and IE will just not work anymore until the VPN connection is dropped.

  • Windows desktop virutalization instead of replacing work stations

    I'm head of the IT department at the small business I work for, however I am primarily a software architect and all of my system administration experience and knowledge is ancillary to software development. At some point this year or next we will be looking at upgrading our workstation environment to a uniform Windows 7 / Office 2010 environment as opposed to the hodge podge collection of various OEM licensed editions of software that are on each different machine. It occurred to me that it is probably possible to forgo upgrading each workstation and instead have it be a dumb terminal to access a virutalization server and have their entire virtual workstation hosted on the server. Now I know basically anything is possible but is this a feasible solution for a small business (25-50 work stations)? Assuming that this is feasible, what type of rough guidelines exist for calculating the required server resources needed for this. How exactly do solutions handle a user accessing their VM, do they log on normally to their physical workstation and then use remote desktop to access their VM, or is it usually done with a client piece of software to negotiate this? What types of software available for administering and monitoring these VM's, can this functionality be achieved out of box with Microsoft Server 2008? I'm mostly interested in these questions relating to Server 2008 with Hyper-V but fell free to offer insight with VMware's product line up, especially if there's any compelling reasons to choose them over Hyper-V in a Microsoft shop. Edit: Just to add some more information on implementation goals would be to upgrade our platform from a Win2k3 / XP environment to a full Windows 2008 / Win7 platform without having to perform any of that associated work with our each differently configured workstation. Also could anyone offer any realistic guidelines for how big of hardware is needed to support 25-50 workstations virtually? The majority the workstations do nothing except Office, Outlook and web. The only high demand workstations are the development workstations which would keep everything local.

Many less powerful machines are priced much higher than machines with better specs. How does one navigate this market? Are there any unpublished/under-publicized specs/bottlenecks you look for? Understanding that hardware improves over time, is there an efficient ratio that can be used (or something similar, like Windows Experience Index?) which will indicate how powerful a system is?     I'm putting together a small active directory implementation for a buddy of mine. I currently have 2 servers (one is the primary domain controller) and a couple clients. I need to test and run updates on every machine on this domain, but I would have plug them into my current LIVE domain to get it internet access. From what I've read having two separate domains on a single subnet is a bad idea (even though it is temporary) so I don't want to risk messing anything up on my production domain. I'm pretty sure I can create a separate VLAN on my extreme 48 port switch and plug this smaller domain into it on a different subnet, but I don't know the commands. Both subnets would need internet access of course (one of the things I can't wrap my head around is routing internet traffic between subnets (gateway is on production subnet). Switch is a Summit x450e-48p My production domain is on subnet 192.168.200.0. My new domain I want to put online would go into subnet 192.168.10.0. A shove in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
