• AFP / Apple Filling Protocol aka Netatalk access over Internet

  I got a simple cloud server and thought it would be nice to have mac native afp Volumes accesss. Installed Netatalk and this seems to work pretty nice. No sensitive data or something but I don't like to wake up someday and have my www docs rm-rfed by some kid h4x0r. Q1: Is afp encrypted? Q2: How can I make it (semi)secure? Q3: Does VPN makes sense for this? Q4: What would you do to get afp working over net? Opening any service meant for Lan only is a basic flaw, i know - but me be ignorant about it. According to Apple Dev only the authentication is encrypted or am I mssing something?

• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 2)

  Last week's article, Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1), was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free Google Maps API. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named Stores with columns capturing the store number, its address and its latitude and longitude coordinates. Next, we looked at using Google Maps API's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address, such as San Diego, CA or 92101 into its latitude and longitude coordinates. Knowing the coordinates of the address entered by the user, we then looked at writing a SQL query to return those stores within (roughly) 15 miles of the user-entered address. These nearby stores were then displayed in a grid, listing the store number, the distance from the address entered to each store, and the store's address. While a list of nearby stores and their distances certainly qualifies as a store locator, most store locators also include a map showing the area searched, with markers denoting the store locations. • Skype 2.1beta for Linux and sound quality

  I've been using Skype 2.1beta for Linux with my bluetooth headset and quality of the sound is just awful. But not always though, if I call echo service, quality is acceptable, but when I call real people there's echo, sound is crippling, there's pauses, voice is unrecognizable, all sorts of quality problems in one call. If I use newest Skype under WIndows with the same headset to call to the same people, quality is more than normal. So, is there some settings I can tweak, like tell Skype which codec to use or maybe there's noise cancellation plugin for PulseAudio I can use or any other system setting I can try to play with?

• Mobile cross-platform SDK for computationally intensive apps

  I am aware of the PhoneGap toolkit for creating mobile applications for virtually all mobile platforms with a significant market share. However, the code in PhoneGap that is shared between the different platforms is written in JavaScript. While I like JS, I think it's hardly appropriate for computationally intensive tasks. The situation with Titanium is pretty much the same. So, is there any way that I can create a cross-platform mobile app that has the computationally intensive code shared between the platforms? Some context: Obviously, I don't want to implement the time consuming algorithm in many different languages, since this violates DRY, increases the chance for bugs slipping in at least one version and require boilerplate code to work. I've looked at Xamarin's MonoTouch and Mono for Android tools, but while they cover iOS and Android, they're not nearly as versatile for deployment as PhoneGap. On the other hand, (IMO) the statically typed nature of C# is more suited for intense computation than JS. Are there any other SDK/tools appropriate for the task that I don't know about or a point about the mentioned above that I've missed? Also, uploading data to a web service for processing is not an option, because of the traffic required.

• Can I run AD commands from a standard PowerShell script?

  I am putting together a script to run post-sysprep. It should check if the machine is on the network, and if it is then it should query AD to see if a computer account exists with it's service tag (we're using these as the hostnames of the machines.) If it does exist, it should delete the account and rejoin the machine to the domain. I have got the majority of the script running, but need to run the following: Remove-ADComputer -Identity $distinguishedName How can I run this from the "standard" powershell environment? I don't want to use the AD module. (By the way - I'm on a mixed mode 2000/03 domain as we are in the process of upgrading to 2008) I'm new to PowerShell so be gentle if I'm completely missing the point! Thanks, Ben

• How do I diagnose a HP Notebook which has hardware issues?

  My HP DV6t-2300 recently crashed while using FLV Player. It wouldn't start up after this so I had to do a hardware reset (remove power sources, hold down power button ~15 seconds, put back power sources). After this it would turn on, but start up would freeze in Ubuntu, Windows 7, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, and various Linux Live CDs. The only successful way to boot was in Windows 7 Safe Mode. The HP Customer Service was very polite, but they are trying to blame it on a corrupt operating system which is clearly not the case (since I have tried 4 operating systems and none work). I am thinking it might be the GPU since 1) I was watching movies when it crashed and 2) Windows Safe Mode might not use the dedicated GPU. I already ran Memory and HDD tests and there were no detected errors. Any ideas of what's wrong, or suggestions for tests that I should run in safe mode? Should I try reinstalling Windows 7 to convince HP that it's not the OS?

• C++ Numerical Recipes &ndash; A New Adventure!

  I am about to embark on a great journey – over the next 6 weeks I plan to read through C++ Numerical Recipes 3rd edition http://amzn.to/YtdpkS I'll be reading this with an eye to C++ AMP, thinking about implementing the suitable subset (non-recursive, additive, commutative) to run on the GPU. APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. This is not the first time I've delved into numerical analysis. 6 months ago I read Numerical methods with Applications, which can be found for free online: http://nm.mathforcollege.com/ 2 years ago I learned the .NET Extreme Optimization library www.extremeoptimization.com – not bad 2.5 years ago I read Schaums Numerical Analysis book http://amzn.to/V5yuLI - not an easy read, as topics jump back & forth across chapters: 3 years ago I read Practical Numerical Methods with C# http://amzn.to/V5yCL9 (which is a toy learning language for this kind of stuff) I also read through AI a Modern Approach 3rd edition END to END http://amzn.to/V5yQSp - this took me a few years but was the most rewarding experience. • Domain Computers Not Listed In Network

  Our network computers are all connected to a domain, and I can see them if I search the active directory (I can click 'search active directory' and then select 'computers' and then Find Now, and all of the computers will appear). However, the computers are not listed in the network browser on any of our computers (Win XP, Win7, Linux, etc) which are connected to the domain. DC is running Windows Server 2008 (Windows Server Standard) with a configured DNS and DHCP server. All of the IPs on our local network are static IPs, although I can't see how that would make a difference. I can still connect to computers on the network via \\computer_name, but I cannot browse them in 'network' or in 'my network places'. The computer browser service is not started on the DC, but I tried starting that and it had no effect. DC currently has the firewall configured as 'off' to try to debug this problem. • HTTP Protocal

  I have worked with the HTTP protocal for about ten years now and I have found it to be incredibly usefull for transfering data espicaly for remote systems and regardless of the network enviroment. Prior to the existance of web services, developers use to use HTTP to screen scrap data off of web pages in order to interact with remote systems, and then process the data as they needed. I use to use the HTTPWebRequest and HTTPWebRespones classes in order to screen scrap data from various sites that had information I needed to use if no web service was avalible. This allowed me to call just about any webpage and grab all of the content on the page. Below is piece of a web spider that I build about 5-7 years ago. • Basic clarification about Limited FTP/sFTP users

  I would like to get some clarification about the correct way to create limited users to access to my VPS user as WEBSERVER with Nginix. I'm used to NOT install FTP and access via SFTP only. It is ok for every set up? this is what I usually do from to create a limited user called "admin" that should be able to have access via SFTP to the folder with the website data mkdir -p /var/www/mysite.com/ adduser admin adduser admin www-data chown -R root:root /var/www chmod -R 755 /var/www chmod -R 755 /var/www/mysite.com chown -R admin:www-data /var/www/mysite.com/ It seems not to be the correct way, I always have problems with permission when I upload some files (for example with Wordpress in general). I would like to create an user that does work exactly as the one that the "provides" give to their client when they buy an Hosting service (that is a FTP, I would prefer SFTP access). It is for personal user, but I think that a limited user is a lot safer to use then the "root" via SFTP.

• Importing .eml files into Exchange Discovery Folder

  I am needing to import over 18mm eml files into Exchange (this is for a client, so I'm restricted on what I can do - flexibility). They do not want these emails to go to the actual users email, so they do not want them to show up in the users inbox, deleted ..etc. They want to be able to search for these emails for litigation purposes ... hence the discovery folder. I have looked into the Pickup folder, which does not do what I want. I have also been writing some C# code to use the EWS (Exchange Web Service) Managed API, but so far I have not found anything to work for me. The Exchange server is 2010 SP1. I have looked through other questions/answers and they do not really match up with what I'm needing to accomplish. These are older emails that have already been removed from the users mailbox. So to turn around and put these emails into the Users inbox would (of course) be very bad.

• Are there any free voice transcription software?

  I have some 1-hour-long voice recordings containing useful information that I may need to look up in the future. Instead of transcribing them myself (which will take me many hours), I want to automate it using software. I don't need an accurate transcription; it's OK as long as I can get an idea of what was being talked about by skimming over the transcription. With this, I can quickly figure out which part of the audio contains the information I need, and is much more convenient than seeking randomly. In theory I could write a program to split the audio into 3 minutes chucks and pipe them into Google Voice's free voicemail transcription service... But I hope there are better solutions. Do you know any free voice transcription software? Note: Free trials are also acceptable

• Google Apps for Business on a separate infrastructure?

  Does anyone know if Google Apps for Business edition hosts the apps (gmail, calendar, etc.) on a physically separate infrastructure than the Standard (free) infrastructure? We've been growing increasingly annoyed with the lost/severely delayed email messages, downtime, etc. of Google Apps (standard) over time, and we are wondering if moving to the paid version would bring any benefits. Specifically, if the Business edition is not in some way on a different physical infrastructure, and we are in essence paying for a few small perks but still run on the usual standard/free setup, then we would probably have the same (or just as many) issues with the Business version. I've emailed Google's sales team responsible for GApps, but haven't heard anything back in 4 days, which already doesn't speak well for the service. So, anyone have any insight into this? • webmin not working on port 10000

  Hi, I posted a similar question yesterday but can't seem to find that post. I have installed webmin on my server which has SSL and its service is running but I am unable to open it in browser. I thought may be the port is blocked by server's firewall so I entered port 10000 (TCP - inbound) in APF but still no luck. When I use https://localhost:10000 on server to access webmin then it works fine but not remotely. Why is such a simple thing so hard to run? Thanks
