• Has glassfish 2.1.1 a bug handling http request and handle them twice?

  I'm using glassfish 2.1.1. I've watched a mysterious http/webservice-call handling. It seams an http request is handled by two different threads. After http basic authentication the first thread is faster. Persisting some data end, but writing response fails in glassfish internal. The second thread fails, because it tries to persist identical data and there are (unique) constrain failures. The response (the failure) of second thread was delivered to client. I don't won't discuss the behavior with the unique constrain failure. I've improve the webservice, so it can handle this better, because it could be happen anytime, that the client send the ws call a second time. But I think, glassfish 2.1.1 has an bug handling http request. Is there any known issue? Have I done an mistake? • Need strategy to phone home to a Pyton web app and check licensing information for a commercial Wind

  What's a good strategy for building licensing checking into a Windows desktop app using a Python web application? This is a very open ended question because I don't have the slightest clue how to start to build this feature. What I do have is a number of general concerns: I have developed a commercial Windows desktop application and I want to make money from it but I don't want to build the licensing into the app since it's inevitable that someone will create a keygen or a crack, circulate it online and then it's 'game over' for me. So my idea was to create a web application where people could purchase a license key that is generated by the web app and every time the desktop application is started up, it will 'phone home' to the web app to check whether the license is valid and whether it seems to be in use at multiple locations. I'm just not sure how to do this. Would appreciate any general technical strategies and/or pointers to libraries/modules that might be of use.

• Caching WCF javascript proxy on browser

  When you use WCF services from Javascript, you have to generate the Javascript proxies by hitting the Service.svc/js. If you have five WCF services, then it means five javascripts to download. As browsers download javascripts synchronously, one after another, it adds latency to page load and slows down page rendering performance. Moreover, the same WCF service proxy is downloaded from every page, because the generated javascript file is not cached on browser. Here is a solution that will ensure the generated Javascript proxies are cached on browser and when there is a hit on the service, it will respond with HTTP 304 if the Service.svc file has not changed. Here’s a Fiddler trace of a page that uses two WCF services. You can see there are two /js hits and they are sequential. Every visit to the same page, even with the same browser session results in making those two hits to /js. Second time when the same page is browsed: You can see everything else is cached, except the WCF javascript proxies. They are never cached because the WCF javascript proxy generator does not produce the necessary caching headers to cache the files on browser. Here’s an HttpModule for IIS and IIS Express which will intercept calls to WCF service proxy. It first checks if the service is changed since the cached version on the browser. If it has not changed then it will return HTTP 304 and not go through the service proxy generation process. Thus it saves some CPU on server.   i have seen through other questions on the topic but most are a bit old. I looking for a good editor for developing on PHP in Linux(ubuntu). Here is my requirements Basic editor features Free Light-Weight Syntax highlighting Code Folding (class,function,if/else/while/foreach block) Code completion Invalid Syntax/Error highlighting as you type Auto code intending Snippet support(pieces of custom or language specific codes that i can insert) Extendable support It would be great if it had the following Debugging support WYSIWYG Code formatting Framework support(cakephp/yii/zend/smarty) Testing support Todo Native look and feel(Gnome) Flex/ROR support is welcome but not a requirement Mysql support I have tried the following editors Netbeans - it bloated, resource hogging and doesnt not have a native look and feel. Eclipse is okay but i cant fold if/while blocks and slow. Gedit can be extended and i have tried it but still i could not fold code or show error. I currently use Geany but it doesn't inform me of syntax errors as i type. If you have ways to solve the problems with above editors they too are also welcome

• Different database for Membership and our web data or use just one?

  Is better to keep our Membership stuff on the DefaultConnection and create another connection (another database) for our data? Or just one database for all? If I have a MyAppContext and I want migrations for that context, It seems that I cannot have migrations for UserContext (In other words, I can just migrate one context) So, having two different databases I can migrate or the users (maybe membership migration is weird) or the web data. Or, I can mix the UserContext and MyAppContext in one UserAndAppContext and migrate all in one place, but this mixing also seems weird. What's the normal way to do this, one or two databases and what should be migrated?

• Can SOTI's MobiControl software interfere with an ASP.Net web service?

  We have a set of WinMo (5.0) devices running a .NET CF application that talks to an ASP.Net web service running on a server. The devices connect to the network either via ActiveSync through a networked PC or directly to the network via an Ethernet dongle. In our development environment, the communication between devices and web service is 100% reliable. In our production environment, the communications are failing erratically and unpredictably. Sometimes calls to the web service (even to a simple test call that just returns a boolean) begin failing every time on a particular device, with the error message "Could not establish connection to network." This is usually fixed by flip-flopping the selected combo box values on the SETTINGS | NETWORKS screen. Sometimes calls on a particular device begin failing with a generic "WebException" message. The fix for this problem (so far) is either to reset the device (i.e. reinstall the OS) or else it just can't be fixed on some devices. To the best of our knowledge, everything about the DEV and PROD systems are the same (same server and device specs). The most obvious difference to us is that the PROD devices are all controlled by SOTI's MobiControl (which is server-side software that communicates with a SOTI client application installed on each device), whereas our DEV environment does not have SOTI installed anywhere (obviously we should have it there as well - long story). Does anybody have any experience with SOTI MobiControl and/or know of any documented problems where SOTI interferes with other communication mechanisms on a device?

I'm building an WPF application that connect to web services for its operations.Things that i needed to be working are so far fine.Now i'll like to improve use experience by adding features like username editable combobox, sign me in when skype start and start when computer start. I have a fair idea about each feature but very small knowledge about their implementation. Question 1 username combobox : i use a combobox with isEditable set to true but i think it doesnt have the previous username, would that mean that i have to store every successful login username in a sqlite for example? Question 2 sign me in when skype start : i think about using sqlite after all to store the credentials and store the value (as in true or false) if autologin has to be performed. Question 3 start when computer start : i know it's about having is as service.but the process of using it as a service and removing its service when checkbox is checked or unckecked is a bit confusing to me. Question 4 Please wait(signing in) of skype if i want to do things like please wait at login(login is over webservice) in a WPF application should i use a animated gif in a grid that i can show when hiding the login combobox and passwordbox grid or i should use an animated object(for which i have no knowledge about for now) ?   We are building an ASP.NET project, and encapsulating all of our business logic in service classes. Some is in the domain objects, but generally those are rather anemic (due to the ORM we are using, that won't change). To better enable unit testing, we define interfaces for each service and utilize D.I.. E.g. here are a couple of the interfaces: IEmployeeService IDepartmentService IOrderService ... All of the methods in these services are basically groups of tasks, and the classes contain no private member variables (other than references to the dependent services). Before we worried about Unit Testing, we'd just declare all these classes as static and have them call each other directly. Now we'll set up the class like this if the service depends on other services: public EmployeeService : IEmployeeService { private readonly IOrderService _orderSvc; private readonly IDepartmentService _deptSvc; private readonly IEmployeeRepository _empRep; public EmployeeService(IOrderService orderSvc , IDepartmentService deptSvc , IEmployeeRepository empRep) { _orderSvc = orderSvc; _deptSvc = deptSvc; _empRep = empRep; } //methods down here } This really isn't usually a problem, but I wonder why not set up a factory class that we pass around instead? i.e. public ServiceFactory { virtual IEmployeeService GetEmployeeService(); virtual IDepartmentService GetDepartmentService(); virtual IOrderService GetOrderService(); } Then instead of calling: _orderSvc.CalcOrderTotal(orderId) we'd call _svcFactory.GetOrderService.CalcOrderTotal(orderid) What's the downfall of this method? It's still testable, it still allows us to use D.I. (and handle external dependencies like database contexts and e-mail senders via D.I. within and outside the factory), and it eliminates a lot of D.I. setup and consolidates dependencies more.   I've recently noticed a bit of a trend for my projects as of late. I use to run my own SVN server on my VPS, but recently the nail went in the coffin for that when I got my last project migrated from my server to a Mercurial repo on Bitbucket. What are some of the ramifications to this? (disregarding the change in version control systems) It seems like there has been a huge explosion in version control hosting, and companies like Bitbucket even offer private repos for free, and Github and other such services are extremely cheap now. Also, by using them you get the benefit of their infrastructure's speed and stability. What reasons are there these days to host your own version control? The only real reason I can think of is if your source code is super top secret.

• How web server choose between unicode and utf-8 for accentued characters?

  I have a web server with my ISP which replaces in the urls the accentued characters by their unicode values: for instance é (eacute) is translated to %e9 (dec 233). For testing I use locally Easyphp which translate those characters by their utf-8 equivalence: é is then replaced by the well known sequence %c3%a9 (é)... Browsers served by Easyphp don't decode unicode values but they do if running locally (utf-8 and non converted accent also)... I have been unable to find where this behavior is configured in the server. This is a problem as some urls are built by my application using the php rawurlencode() which seems to always encode with unicode values on both servers. Any idea? Thanks in advance.

• Can a web app in xul:iframe access functions from its parent XUL file?

  I want to deploy a web app as a self-contained program using XULRunner. I'm simply loading it in a xul:iframe tag within the main XUL file. It works, but I want the web app to have access to XUL components, specifically nsiFilePicker. I was thinking it should be possible using .htaccess to respond with status code 403 (Forbidden) for all HTTP requests from the blacklisted IP addresses, ... but I am not sure exactly how to do that. • How does the web server choose between unicode and utf-8 for accented characters?

  I have a web server with my ISP which replaces accented characters in URLs with their unicode values: for instance é (eacute) is translated to %e9 (dec 233). For testing locally I use EasyPHP which translates those characters by their utf-8 equivalence: é is then replaced by the well known sequence %c3%a9 (é)... Browsers served by EasyPHP don't decode unicode values but they do if running locally (utf-8 and non converted accent also)... I have been unable to find where this behavior is configured in the server. This is a problem as some urls are built by my application using the php rawurlencode() which seems to always encode with unicode values on both servers. Any idea?

• Can I use a *.tag from another *.tag file in the same /WEB-INF/tags folder?

  Hello, I am trying to refactor my JSP code so that a small conditional test condition gets reused through a *.tag file. There are some big parts of my UI that depend on the value of a two-state property of an object present in the request. Let's say the property is 'gender' and the object is of type Person. Like I said, I would like to simplify & centralize the test on the gender property using a tag. For this purpose, I created two tag files: /WEB-INF/tags/if-male.tag /WEB-INF/tags/if-female.tag Now, I have another tiny spot that gets repeated in all over my application; let's say is the salutation to my site user. With this idea, I created a tag like this: /WEB-INF/tags/salutation.tag As you can imagine, I am trying to use the if-male/if-female test within the salutation.tag file to output 'Mrs.' or 'Mr.' like this: <%@ tag body-content="empty" %> <%@ taglib prefix="g" uri="/WEB-INF/tags" %> <g:if-male> Mr. </g:if-male> <g:if-female> Mrs. </g:if-female> Is the use of the if-male/if-female tags legal within the salutation.tag file? I have tried with such arrangement, but it looks like the JDeveloper 10.1.3.4 compiler gets confused and cannot deal with the salutation.tag tag invoking the other two tags in the same 'library' (folder under /WEB-INF/tags). The reference works perfectly in Jetty 6 and it looks like it works as well if I deploy the application to OC4J directly without relying on JDeveloper to pre-compile all my JSPs. • Is there an alternative to javascript for the web that can do multi-threading and synchronous execution?

  I would like to program web applications as I do with desktop programming languages, where the code is synchronously executed and browser doesn't freeze when doing loops. Yes I know there are workarounds using callbacks and setTimeout, but they are all workarounds after all and they don't give the same flexibility when programming in the orthodox way I've been looking at Dart as a possibilty, but I can't seem to find where it says it can do either of these. The same with haxe, emscript, and the hundreds of other converters that try to circumvent javascript. In the end it gets converted to Javascript so you ultimately have to be conscious about asynchronous/multi threading.

  I have two tightly coupled services that can run on completely different nodes (e.g. ServiceA and ServiceB). If I start up another replicated copy of both these services for backup purposes (ServiceA-2 and ServiceB-2), what would be the best way of setting up a fault tolerant distributed system such that on a fault in any of the tightly coupled services ServiceA or ServiceB the whole communication should go through backup ServiceA-2 and ServiceB-2? Overall, all the communication should go either through both services or their backup replicas. |---- Service A | | Service B | | (backup branch - used only on fault in Service A or B) ---- Service A-2 | Service B-2 Note that in case that Service A goes down, data from Service B would be incorrect (and vice versa).   I am running ubuntu 11.10 32bit in my dell xps L502. Working good except few problems. Blue tooth always turned on reboot,I would like to turn it off always. Screen brightness is not saved.Every time I reboot, the screen goes back to full brightness.How to save that? and the most important problem is internet speed through wi-fi is really very slow when operating on battery.the card is intel centrino Advanced-N 1030 with integrated blue tooth. Any help will be appriciated... :)
