• KB2667402 update fails to install with 0x80004005. Yet it's also showing as installed

  I've got 15 Windows 2008 R2 x64 servers that I manage with SCCM2012. I've noticed during my Windows updates reporting that there's two boxes that are showing as 'error' for total updates installed. Digging around, it looks like the update that is failing to install is KB2667402. The Software Centre on the server itself shows the following: The software change returned error code 0x80004005(-2147467259). So SCCM thinks it hasn't installed the update. However, if I go to the Programs and Features application and select 'Windows Updates', I can see an entry for KB2667402: If I try and uninstall this, I get an error: An error occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled If I try and download the patch from Microsoft directly, I get the same error installing as displayed in Software Centre. The only odd thing about this setup that I can think would affect this is that I run the RDP service on a non-standard port. However, I do this across all the servers, so it seems odd that it would fail on just 2 out of 15. • Does private browsing prevent socket events?

  I usually do my work in Google Chrome (v36.0.1985.143), private browsing enabled. I use Firefox to browse Stack Exchange, in normal mode so that all my logins are persisted. Sometimes I accidentally open an SE question in Chrome, so I copy-paste the URL to Firefox and get on reading. I left the SE tab in Chrome open, and up-voted a question in Firefox. Normally, you immediately see other users' voting activity via socket event emitting (possibly Socket.IO, I don't know SE's back-end). I noticed that in my Chrome tab, I didn't see the upvote that I had cast in Firefox. I had to refresh to be able to see the vote count change. So, as the title of the question states: does private browsing prevent socket events?

• What stops HTML5 and JS apps to perform as good as native apps?

  From what I understand, HTML is a mark-up language, so is the content of XAML, XIB and whatever Android uses and other native UI development frameworks. JavaScript is a programming language used along with it to handle client side scripting which will include things like event handling, client side validations and anything else C#,Java,Objective-C or C++ do in various such frameworks. There are MVC/MVVM patterns available in form frameworks like Sencha's, Angular etc. We have localStorage in form of both sqlite and key-value store as other frameworks have and you have API specification for almost everything that it missing. Whenever a native UI frameworks has to render UI , it has to parse a similar the markup and render the UI. Question break-down What stops from doing the same in HTML and JS itself ? Instead of having a web-control or browser as a layer in between why can't HTML(along with CSS) and JS be made to perform the same way ? Even if there is a layer,so does .net runtime and JVM are in other cases where C++,C are not being used. So Lets take the case of Android, like Dalvik, why Can't Chromium be another option(along with dalvik and NDK) where HTML does what android markup does and JavaScript is used to do what Java does ? So the Question is, Even if current implementations aren't as good, but theoretically is it possible to get HTML5 based applications to work as other native apps specially on mobile ?

• HTML5 media loading sometimes suspends or aborts: misconfigured Apache?

  Recently, some code that has been working fine for months started to run unexpectedly. That code is just a media files loading JavaScript function, that uses jQuery. It's pretty long, but in essence it is like this: var $audio=$('<audio>'); $audio.on('canplaythrough',function(e){ $audio[0].play(); }); $audio.attr('src','song.ogg'); Basically, the file only loads sometimes, and sometimes stops loading with a suspend or even an abort event. I have uploaded a little testing HTML to http://www.joanbotella.com/tests/loading , where you can see what's happening. You can download the test files from http://www.joanbotella.com/tests/loading/loadingTest.zip for local testing. I have just checked that opening the test index.html file directly into Firefox, and not through my localhost Apache server, makes the audio files perfectly playable. So, I assume, my hosting and I have the Apache server misconfigured for serving media files. My software versions are: Apache 2.2.22-1ubuntu1.7 , Mozilla Firefox 31.0 , Chromium 36.0.1985.125 and jQuery 1.11.0. Can you help me? Thanks in advance!

• Finding furthermost point in game world

  I am attempting to find the furthermost point in my game world given the player's current location and a normalized direction vector in screen space. My current algorithm is: convert player world location to screen space multiply the direction vector by a large number (2000) and add it to the player's screen location to get the distant screen location convert the distant screen location to world space create a line running from the player's world location to the distant world location loop over the bounding "walls" (of which there are always 4) of my game world check whether the wall and the line intersect if so, where they intersect is the furthermost point of my game world in the direction of the vector Here it is, more or less, in code: public Vector2 GetFurthermostWorldPoint(Vector2 directionVector) { var screenLocation = entity.WorldPointToScreen(entity.Location); var distantScreenLocation = screenLocation + (directionVector * 2000); var distantWorldLocation = entity.ScreenPointToWorld(distantScreenLocation); var line = new Line(entity.Center, distantWorldLocation); float intersectionDistance; Vector2 intersectionPoint; foreach (var boundingWall in entity.Level.BoundingWalls) { if (boundingWall.Intersects(line, out intersectionDistance, out intersectionPoint)) { return intersectionPoint; } } Debug.Assert(false, "No intersection found!"); return Vector2.Zero; } Now this works, for some definition of "works". • IIS web service responds on server, not from remote client

  I have installed a web service on a server running IIS (v6, as far as I can tell). There is another service installed, which responds as expected. My service responds correctly when a browser is pointed to localhost, but there is no response when a remote client tries to query the service. Fiddler on the remote client simply reports a timeout. Wireshark on the remote client shows no response at all from the server, no NACK, nothing. Wireshark on the server detects no query at the relevant port (the service is installed on port 8080). There are no relevant entries in the event viewer. Obviously there is some issue of permissions or authentication. I have tried to compare my service to the service that works, but I have not been able to locate relevant parameters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Configuring Samba to allow Use of CUPS printer

  Having trouble with samba printing. I have a CUPS printer installed on an Ubuntu 11.04 server and that works great. When I try to configure samba to allow an XP machine to use the printer, it fails when printing. I can install the printer drivers for XP from the server and the printer appears in the XP printer control panels. • Windows 7 Wakeup from Sleep then Shutdown

  Is this caused by low battery? I have an Asus UX31A, and I left it unattended. As usual, in 5 minutes, it went to sleep mode with the lid still open. I came back a couple hours later, and I noticed the laptop was off. I was still able to turn it on by manually pressing the power button (battery was at 2% though), but I don't understand why it shut off. If it was in sleep mode and the battery was near depletion, then wouldn't that result in a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" upon boot? Does Windows have a mechanism to wake from sleep from a super critical battery level to shut down all programs and power down the system completely? I noticed that upon booting, firefox didn't give a fit about improper shutdown. Here are my power settings btw, powercfg -h off has been ran, so hibernation is off. • Unresponsive virtual OS

  Hopefully someone has a suggestion on how to resolve this. Configuration Host: Win 2003R2 w/Virtual Server 2005R2 Virtual1: Win 2003R2 w/Sql Server 2005 Virtual2: Win 2003R2 w/WSS 3.0 Situation This past weekend the power went out and took down the servers (no UPS, it's a desktop standing in as dev testing server). Since the servers went down the Virtual2 server after running WSS fairly heavily for an hour to two will become unresponsive via HTTP. If I login via virtual server's remote control I don't get anything beyond a background screen. The CPU counter on the virtual server's master status shows that it isn't doing anything. The only thing I have been able to do is to turn off Virtual2, which loses any state changes. Shutdown commands issue from the virtual server master status are ignored. After restarting Virtual2 the event logs and application logs don't indicate what caused the problem. Anyone have an idea as to how to repair the OS, or maybe what could be the problem? • Indefinite loops where the first time is different

  This isn't a serious problem or anything someone has asked me to do, just a seemingly simple thing that I came up with as a mental exercise but has stumped me and which I feel that I should know the answer to already. There may be a duplicate but I didn't manage to find one. Suppose that someone asked you to write a piece of code that asks the user to enter a number and, every time the number they entered is not zero, says "Error" and asks again. When they enter zero it stops. In other words, the code keeps asking for a number and repeats until zero is entered. In each iteration except the first one it also prints "Error". The simplest way I can think of to do that would be something like the folloing pseudocode: int number = 0; do { if(number != 0) { print("Error"); } print("Enter number"); number = getInput(); }while(number != 0); While that does what it's supposed to, I personally don't like that there's repeating code (you test number != 0 twice) -something that should generally be avoided. One way to avoid this would be something like this: int number = 0; while(true) { print("Enter number"); number = getInput(); if(number == 0) { break; } else { print("Error"); } } But what I don't like in this one is "while(true)", another thing to avoid. Is there a way to do this without doing something that's generally thought of as a bad practice (repeating code, a theoretically endless loop or the use of goto)? I understand that something like this would never be complex enough that the first way would be a problem (you'd generally call a function to validate input) but I'm curious to know if there's a way I haven't thought of.

• Inline template efficiency

  I like inline templates, and use them quite extensively. Whenever I write code with them I'm always careful to check the disassembly to see that the resulting output is efficient. Here's a potential cause of inefficiency. Suppose we want to use the mis-named Leading Zero Detect (LZD) instruction on T4 (this instruction does a count of the number of leading zero bits in an integer register - so it should really be called leading zero count). Everything could be held in registers, so why is this happening? The problem is that the code is only inlined at the code generation stage - when the actual instructions are generated. Earlier compiler phases see a function call. The called functions can do all kinds of nastiness to global variables (like 'a' in this code) so we need to load them from memory after the function call, and store them to memory before the function call. Fortunately we can use a #pragma directive to tell the compiler that the routine lzd() has no side effects - meaning that it does not read or write to memory. The directive to do that is #pragma no_side_effect(<routine name), and it needs to be placed after the declaration of the function. Hardware interrupt is generated by the operation system event scheduler to reassign the cpu time for another process. Is this true? Software interrupt can be generated from a running program who wants for example to read a file, and for that we need to reassign the cpu for the appropriate operation system call. Is this true? Is there other kind of software/hardware interrupts?

• Troubleshooting a crash with Windows 7

  I have a folder with several thousand videos (All .MPG extensions). When I open the folder with these videos, it shows up fine, but as I start scrolling down, it crashes the Windows Explorer. In the Event Viewer, I see this: Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp: 0x4aebab8d Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16559, time stamp: 0x4ba9b802 Exception code: 0xc0000374 Fault offset: 0x00000000000c6df2 Faulting process id: 0x954 Faulting application start time: 0x01cbb1b71edf3b51 Faulting application path: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: ee987372-1dc4-11e0-8e06-406186ea9135 I suspect that one of the videos has bad metadata. I removed the Length column and it was still crashing. I then removed the Date column and the problem disappeared. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem or at least identifying the file that's causing the issue.

• Why is my dual-boot Ubuntu partition showing up as a peripheral "root.disk"?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04, which I had been booting from a usb key, as a dual-boot on my machine running Windows 7. From what I had read online while researching, I was prepared to have to shrink the Windows partition and all that. But I never had to - it really was just a few clicks here and there and it was installed. I'm still pretty confused about it, but whatever, it worked, and the two peacefully coexist on my machine, and I have broken things to fix before I worry about fixing unbroken things. So yesterday I got it in my head to look at my partitions (I was considering making an all new partition to install the Windows 8 Release Preview). What I saw confused me. Here's a screenshot of the disk utility. At this moment, there is nothing connected to my computer, and nothing in any of the optical drives/ports/card readers/etc. Can you help me figure out what's going on here? Don's Machine is, I believe, my Windows partition - that's the name I assigned my machine from Windows Explorer. PQSERVICE is from what I can find online also Windows, but having to do with backup. And SYSTEM REQUIRED, if I browse it in Ubuntu, is definitely something to do with booting, and I believe it is also Windows'. According to the sizes shown, those three together should use up my 500 GB HD. Then further down, as a "peripheral device", it lists that 31 GB disk. This is obviously my Ubuntu (Model:Linux Loop:root.disk), but why is it showing up as a peripheral? So, to sum up those questions and to add some more random ones I had: Why is Ubuntu showing up as a peripheral device? If the Windows sections take up all 500 GB, where does Ubuntu live? If I renamed the disk partitions, would my life become a nightmare (seriously - can I safely rename them)? Why didn't I have to resize the Windows partition in the first place? Would giving Ubuntu more space improve its performance (it hangs alot)? Is it possible to have a partition for each OS (Windows 7 & 8, Ubuntu), a partition for files, and a separate partition for backups? Is this towards the good or bad idea end of the spectrum? @Elfy, would that explain why it keeps hanging? I guess I'll backup my files, rip it out, and reinstall it correctly later on today.

• Behaviour Trees with irregular updates

  I'm interested in behaviour trees that aren't iterated every game tick, but every so often. (Edit: the tree could specify how many frames within the main game loop to wait before running its tick function again). Every theoretical implementation I have seen of behaviour trees talks of the tree search being carried out every game update - which seems necessary, because a leaf node (eg a behaviour, like 'return to base') needs to be constantly checked to see if is still running, failed or completed. Can anyone suggest how I might start implementing a tree that isnt run every tick, or point me in the direction of good material specific to this case (I am struggling to find anything)? My thoughts so far: action leaf nodes (when they start) must only push some kind of action object onto a list for an entity, rather than directly calling any code that makes the entity do something. The list of actions for the entity would be run every frame (update any that need to run, pop any that have completed from the list). the return state from a given action must be fed back into the tree, so that when we run the tree iteration again (and reach the same action leaf node - so the tree has so far determined that we ought to still be trying this action) - that the action has completed, or is still running etc. If my actual action code is running from an action list on an entity, then I possibly need to cancel previously running actions in the list - i am thinking that I can just delete the entire stack of queued up actions. I've seen the idea of ActionLists which block lower priority actions when a higher priority one is added, but this seems like very close logic to behaviour trees, and I dont want to be duplicating behaviour. This leaves me with some questions 1) How would I feed the action return state back into the tree? Its obvious I need to store some information relating to 'currently executing actions' on the entity, and check that in the tree tick, but I can't imagine how. 2) Does having a seperate behaviour tree (for deciding behaviour) and action list (for carrying out actual queued up actions) sound like a reasonable approach? 3) Is the approach of updating a behaviour tree irregularly actually used by anyone? It seems like a nice idea for budgeting ai search time when you have a lot of ai entities to process. (Edit) - I am also thinking about storing a single instance of a given behaviour tree in memory, and providing it by reference to any entity that uses it. So any information about what action was last selected for execution on an entity must be stored in a data context relative to the entity (which the tree can check). (I am probably answering my own questions as i go!) I hope I have expressed my questions adequately! Thanks in advance for any help :)

  On a new install of Windows Server 2008, I attempting to use ssh to connect to another host. I have installed putty/openssh. This works without a problem when trying a command such as: ssh 192.168.0.2 However, this will crash when trying something like: ssh testserver with the error as follows in the windows event viewer: Faulting application ssh.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x40843497, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a76d, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0004bbb8, process id 0xe94, application start time 0x01cb873195e795d5. • good literature for teaching object oriented thinking in C [closed]

  Quite often C is the primary platform for the development. And when things are large scale, I have seen partitioning of the system as different objects is quite a natural thing. Some or many of the object orientated analysis and design principles are used here very well. This is not a debate question about whether or not C is a good candidate for object oriented programming or not. This is also NOT a question how to do OO in C. You can refer to this question and there are probably many such citations. As far as I am concerned, I have learned some of this things while working with many open source and commercial projects. (libjpeg, ffmpeg, Gstreamer which is based on GObject). I can probably extend a few references that explains some of these concepts such as - 1. Event Helix article, 2. Linux Mag article 3. one of my answers which links Schreiner's reference. Unfortunately, when we induct younger folks, it seems too hard to make them learn all of it the hard way. Usually, when we say it's C, a general reaction is to throw away all of the "Object thinking". Looking for help extending above references from those who have been in the similar areas of work. Are there any good formal literature that explains how Object thinking can be made to use while you are working in C? I have seen tons of book on general "object oriented paradigms" but they all focus on advanced languages mostly not in C. You see most C books - but most focus only on the syntax and the obfuscated corners of C and that's it. There are hardly ANY good reference, specially books or any systematic (I mean formal) literature on how to apply OO in C. This is very surprising given that so many large scale open source projects use C which are truly using this very well; but we hardly see any good formal literature on this subject.
