• How to get maven gwt 2.0 build working

  EDIT: Added some of the output of the mvn -X -e commands at the end My company is developing a GWT application. We've been using maven 2 and GWT 1.7 successfully for quite a while. We recently decided to upgrade to GWT 2.0. We've already updated the eclipse project and we are able to successfully run the application in dev-mode. We are struggling to get the application built using maven though. I'm hoping somebody can tell me what I'm doing wrong here since I'm running out of time on this. It's finding the correct sourceDirectory. That folders has a 'com' folder within which ultimately is the source of the application organized in folders as per the package structure.

• On REST: WADL or not IDL, is the following approach right ?

  This question is a bit long, please bear with me. In REST, i think we should not need WADL or any IDL. But rather something that would implicitly cover its concept. The way I think about it is when we (humans) surf the Web, when we go to a web site for the first time, we don't know what services it provides. You discover those on the html home page (or a sitemap page in a help section) or maybe just the main menu on the home page. If you make an analogy, the homepage or site map to us humans is what WSDL is to WS-* or what WADL could be to a REST service. Only that its just like any other html content. I think that in REST the following is a good way to do things, respecting the HATEOS paradigm. Have a top level (or default) resource that lists links to your other resources. For a library example, say RestLibrary.com/ it could be something like: <root xmlns:lib="http://librarystandards.com/libraryml"> <resource class="lib:book"> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="add" href="mylib.com/book" method="POST" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="update" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" method="PUT" /> </resource> <resource class="lib:bookList"> <link template="mylib.com/book?keywords={keywords}" type="application/vnd.openlibrary+xml" rel="search" /> </resource> </root> Note that it is assumed that the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is a defined standard or (may be just proprietary vocabulary) named libraryml. Also, the client should be able to understand this "homepage" resource (elements root, resource and link). This is the part that could be used instead of WADL : an Abstract vocabulary that should be understandable by any client. You could use an existing standard like Atom for example. But the main idea is to have an abstract vocabulary understandable by any client. Why not WADL then ? well wadl is only for service discovery. The idea here is to have an light abstract vocabulary that would serve as a base for hypermedia. A "root" vocabulary. Like in owl we have owl:thing...etc Now if the client knows the "libraryml" standard it can follow the links to the things it understands (after parsing the media type properties and xmlns). If not, it just won't. When i can't understand how to deal with something in REST architecture i tend to see how we Humans do it in the Web. In the Web, we have the Generic language that is HTML that enables site builders to deliver any specific content, regardless of its meaning to the client (the user), Browsers understand HTML but not the "meaning" of its content. It is the user that understands the (domain specific) content. If i go to say QuantumPhysics.org, my browser can render the home page (it is just html after all) and i can read the home page. If i understand quantum then fine i can continue browsing. If i don't i just get out (unless i want to learn the hardway :) ) In the RetsLibrary.com example the client app is just like me+my browser on QuantumPhysics.org. the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is quantum physics (knowledge). http is http in both examples. Now HTML of QuantumPhysics.org is in RestLibrary.com is XML + that tiny little abstract vocabulary (root resource and link, that you could replace with something like Atom). So does this approach have any value ? don't we need a root tiny hyper-vocabulary so we can succeed with hypermedia and the "initial URI" concept ? edit Yeah why not RDF as the root vocabulary !

• Simple animation using C#/Windows Forms

  I need to knock out a quick animation in C#/Windows Forms for a Halloween display. Just some 2D shapes moving about on a solid background. Since this is just a quick one-off project I really don't want to install and learn an entire new set of tools for this. (DirectX dev kits, Silverlight, Flash, etc..) I also have to install this on multiple computers so anything beyond the basic .Net framework (2.0) would be a pain in the arse. For tools I've got VS2k8, 25 years of development experience, a wheelbarrow, holocaust cloak, and about 2 days to knock this out. I haven't done animation since using assembler on my Atari 130XE (hooray for page flipping and player/missile graphics!) Advice? Here's some of the things I'd like to know: I can draw on any empty widget (like a panel) by fiddling with it's OnPaint handler, right? That's how I'd draw a custom widget. Is there a better technique than this? Is there a page-flipping technique for this kind of thing in Windows Forms? I'm not looking for a high frame rate, just as little flicker/drawing as necessary. Thanks. Post Mortem Edit ... "a couple of coding days later" Well, the project is done. The links below came in handy although a couple of them were 404. (I wish SO would allow more than one reply to be marked "correct"). The biggest problem I had to overcome was flickering, and a persistent bug when I tried to draw on the form directly. Using the OnPaint event for the Form: bad idea. I never got that to work; lots of mysterious errors (stack overflows, or ArgumentNullExceptions). I wound up using a panel sized to fill the form and that worked fine. Using the OnPaint method is slow anyway. Somewhere online I read that building the PaintEventArgs was slow, and they weren't kidding. Lots of flickering went away when I abandoned this. Skip the OnPaint/Invalidate() and just paint it yourself. Setting all of the "double buffering" options on the form still left some flicker that had to be fixed. (And I found conflicting docs that said "set them on the control" and "set them on the form". Well controls don't have a .SetStyle() method.) I haven't tested without them, so they might be doing something (this is the form): this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.UserPaint, true); this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.OptimizedDoubleBuffer, true); this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.AllPaintingInWmPaint, true); So the workhorse of the code wound up looking like (pf is the panel control): void PaintPlayField() { Bitmap bufl = new Bitmap(pf.Width, pf.Height); using (Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(bufl)) { g.FillRectangle(Brushes.Black, new Rectangle(0, 0, pf.Width, pf.Height)); DrawItems(g); DrawMoreItems(g); pf.CreateGraphics().DrawImageUnscaled(bufl, 0, 0); } } And I just called PaintPlayField from the inside of my Timer loop. • Understanding Node.js and concept of non-blocking I/O

  Recently I became interested in using Node.js to tackle some of the parts of my web-application. I love the part that its full JavaScript and its very light weight so no use anymore to call an JavaScript-PHP call but a lighter JavaScript-JavaScript call. I however do not understand all the concepts explained. Basic concepts Now in the presentation for Node.js Ryan Dahl talks about non-blocking IO and why this is the way we need to create our programs. I can understand the theoretical concept. You just don't wait for a response, you go ahead and do other things. You make a callback for the response, and when the response arrives millions of clock-cycles later, you can fire that. If you have not already I recommend to watch this presentation. It is very easy to follow and pretty detailed. There are some nice concepts explained on how to write your code in a good manner. There are also some examples given and I am going to work with the basic example given. Examples The way we do thing now: puts("Enter your name: "); var name = gets(); puts("Name: " + name); Now the problem with this is that the code is halted at line 1. It blocks your code. The way we need to do things according to node puts("Enter your name: "); gets(function (name) { puts("Name: " + name); }); Now with this your program does not halt, because the input is a function within the output. So the programs continues to work without halting. Questions Now the basic question I have is how does this work in real-life situations. I am talking here for the use in web-applications. The application I am writing does I/O, bit is still does it in am blocking matter. I think that most of the time, if not all, you need to block, because you have to wait on what the response is you have to work with. When you need to get some information from the database, most of the time this data needs to be verified before you can further with the code. Example 1 If you take a login for example. You have to wait for the database to response to return, because you can not do anything else. I can't see a way around this without blocking. Example 2 Going back to the basic example. The use just request something from a database which does not need any verification. You still have to block because you don't have anything to do more. I can not come up with a single example where you want to do other things while you wait for the response to return. Possible answers I have read that this frees up recourses. When you program like this it takes less CPU or memory usage. So this non-blocking IO is ONLY meant to free up recourses and does not have any other practical use. Not that this is not a huge plus, freeing up recourses is always good. Yet I fail to see this as a good solution. because in both of the above examples, the program has to wait for the response of the user. Whether this is inside a function, or just inline, in my opinion there is a program that wait for input. Resources I looked at I have looked at some recourses before I posted this question. They talk a lot about the theoretical concept, which is quite clear. Yet i fail to see some real-life examples where this is makes a huge difference. • Suddenly unable to export to war file from exclipse

  I been working on this Servlet project all morning and now suddenly I cannot get eclipse to export the project to a war file. I tried restarting eclipse and cleaning the project but I just get the same result.   Hi, I am trying to deploy an ear file to JBOSS AS (defalut server). The application is the mavenised version of examples of SeamInAction book. When I copy the file to $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/deploy, I don't get any exception but the application doesn't respond, after some time trying to access the application from the browser gives following in the log... • Summer Programming Plans

  I've wanted to start "hacking" for many months now. But I put it off in favor of school and other things. Now, though, I'm free for the summer and want to learn as much as I can. I have a rough idea of what I want to try my hand at, but need some guidance as to what specifically - and how - I should learn. This is my plan so far: 1) Get good at programming in general. I plan to read up on how to think/work like a programmer. I'm waiting for the Pragmatic Programmer to arrive, which will be the first book I read. Q: What other books/ebooks should I look at? What more can I do here? 2) Learn/Improve at HTML/CSS. My first project will be to make a personal website/blog for myself using HTML and CSS. ----Then I hope to write/design articles like Dustin Curtis. After I finish this (and learn a programming language) I'll try to create user-based a user-focused website. Q: It's my understanding that just trying to design/manage websites is a good way to learn/improve at HTML/CSS. Is that all correct? 3) Try music development. This might be a sort of stretch for stackoverflow, but I'm interested in mixing/making techno songs. (Think Justice, or Daft Punk, or MSTRKRFT.) Q: I have a Mac. Any ideas on how I could start/learn music making? Any programs I should download, for instance? 4) My main goal: Learning a web development language/framework. I'm a year into learning/using C++. But what I really want to do is develop websites and web apps. I've searched online, and there seems to be great debate over which language/framework to learn first (and which is best). I think I've narrowed it down to three: Ruby (Rails), Python (Django), and PHP (?). Q #1: Which should I learn and use first? (Reasons?) Q #2: One reason I was leaning towards PHP is that I'm taking a PHP development course next semester. Learning it now would make that course easy. If PHP was not the answer to Q #1, is it worth learning both? Or, would it be better to just focus on PHP for this summer and next semester, and then transition thereafter to a better language? 5) iPhone/iPad Programming (Maybe). I've a number of simple, useful app ideas that I'd like to eventually get too. I just bought a Mac, as well as a few app development books. Q #1: Am I spreading myself thin trying to learn all of the above, and objective-C? Q #2: How much harder/easier is objective-C compared to the above languages? Also, how easy is it to learn obj-C after learning a web development language (and some C++)? Q #3: Yes or no? Should I go for it, or just keeep with #1-4 for now? Also: If you have any tips on how I should learn (or how you learned to hack), I'm all ears. I'd be especially interested in how you planned out learning: did you just hack whenever you felt like it, or did you "study" the language a few hours a day, or something else? Thanks so much, guys.

• Contructor parameters for dependent classes with Unity Framework

  I just started using the Unity Application Block to try to decouple my classes and make it easier for unit testing. I ran into a problem though that I'm not sure how to get around. Looked through the documentation and did some Googling but I'm coming up dry. Here's the situation: I have a facade-type class which is a chat bot. It is a singleton class which handles all sort of secondary classes and provides a central place to launch and configure the bot. I also have a class called AccessManager which, well, manages access to bot commands and resources. Boiled down to the essence, I have the classes set up like so. public class Bot { public string Owner { get; private set; } public string WorkingDirectory { get; private set; } private IAccessManager AccessManager; private Bot() { // do some setup // LoadConfig sets the Owner & WorkingDirectory variables LoadConfig(); // init the access mmanager AccessManager = new MyAccessManager(this); } public static Bot Instance() { // singleton code } ... } And the AccessManager class: public class MyAccessManager : IAccessManager { private Bot botReference; public MyAccesManager(Bot botReference) { this.botReference = botReference; SetOwnerAccess(botReference.Owner); } private void LoadConfig() { string configPath = Path.Combine( botReference.WorkingDirectory, "access.config"); // do stuff to read from config file } ... } I would like to change this design to use the Unity Application Block. When I create a bot instance it's going to try to resolve IAccessManager but won't be able to because I haven't registered the types yet (that's the next line). But I can't move the registration in front of the Bot creation because as part of the registration I need to pass the Bot as a parameter! Circular dependencies!! Gah!!! This indicates to me I have a flaw in the way I have this structured. But how do I fix it? Help!!

  I am trying to build a webservice that manipulates http requests POST and GET. Most online references show making a website, but really, all I want to do is respond when an HttpPost is sent. I don't know what to put in the website, just want that code to run. Edit: I am following this site as its exactly what I'm trying to do. I have the website set up, I have the code for the handler in a .cs file, i have edited the web.config to add the handler for the file extension I need. Now I am at the step 3 where you tell IIS about this extension and map it to ASP.NET. Also I am using IIS 7 so interface is slightly different than the screenshots. This is the problem I have: 1) Go to website 2) Go to handler mappings 3) Go Add Script Map 4) request path - put the extension I want to handle 5) Executable- it seems i am told to set aspnet_isapi.dll here. Maybe this is incorrect? 6) Give name 7) Hit OK button: Add Script Map Do you want to allow this ISAPI extension? Click "Yes" to add the extension with an "Allowed" entry to the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions list or to update an existing extension entry to "Allowed" in the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions list. If you are adding a script map handler mapping, the IsapiModule or the CgiModule must be in the modules list. OK edit 2: Have just figured out that that managed handler had something to do with handlers witten in managed code, script map was to help configuring an executable and module mapping to work with http Modules. So I should be using option 1 - Add Managed Handler.   I've recently purchased a new hard drive and installed a clean copy of OS X Mavericks. I installed python using homebrew and i need to create a python virtual environment. But when ever i try to run any command using pip, I get this error. I haven't been able to find a solution online for this problem. Any reference would be appreciated. Here is the error I'm getting. • Interactive Data Language, IDL: Does anybody care?

  Anyone use a language called Interactive Data Language, IDL? It is popular with scientists. I think it is a poor language because it is proprietary (every terminal running it has to have an expensive license purchased) and it has minimal support (try searching for IDL, the language, right now on stack) . I am trying to convince my colleagues to stop using it and learn C/C++/Python/Fortran/Java/Ruby. Does anybody know about or even care about IDL enough to have opinions on it? What do you think of it? Should I tell my colleagues to stop wasting their time on it now? How can I convince them? Edit: People are getting the impression that I don't know or use IDL. Also, I said IDL has minimal support which is true in one sense, so I must clarify that the scientific libraries are indeed large. I use IDL all the time, but this is exactly the problem: I am only using IDL because colleagues use it. There is a file format IDL uses, the .sav, which can only be opened in IDL. So I must use IDL to work with this data and transfer the data back to colleagues, but I know I would be more efficient in another language. This is like someone sending you a microsoft word file in an email attachment and if you don't understand how wrong that is then you probably write too many words not enough code and you bought microsoft word. • View Generated Source (After AJAX/JavaScript) in C#

  Is there a way to view the generated source of a web page (the code after all AJAX calls and JavaScript DOM manipulations have taken place) from a C# application without opening up a browser from the code? Viewing the initial page using a WebRequest or WebClient object works ok, but if the page makes extensive use of JavaScript to alter the DOM on page load, then these don't provide an accurate picture of the page. I have tried using Selenium and Watin UI testing frameworks and they work perfectly, supplying the generated source as it appears after all JavaScript manipulations are completed. Unfortunately, they do this by opening up an actual web browser, which is very slow. I've implemented a selenium server which offloads this work to another machine, but there is still a substantial delay. Is there a .Net library that will load and parse a page (like a browser) and spit out the generated code? Clearly, Google and Yahoo aren't opening up browsers for every page they want to spider (of course they may have more resources than me...). Is there such a library or am I out of luck unless I'm willing to dissect the source code of an open source browser? SOLUTION Well, thank you everyone for you're help. I have a working solution that is about 10X faster then Selenium. Woo! Thanks to this old article from beansoftware I was able to use the System.Windows.Forms.WebBrwoswer control to download the page and parse it, then give em the generated source. Even though the control is in Windows.Forms, you can still run it from Asp.Net (which is what I'm doing), just remember to add System.Window.Forms to your project references. There are two notable things about the code. First, the WebBrowser control is called in a new thread. This is because it must run on a single threaded apartment. Second, the GeneratedSource variable is set in two places. This is not due to an intelligent design decision :) I'm still working on it and will update this answer when I'm done. wb_DocumentCompleted() is called multiple times. First when the initial HTML is downloaded, then again when the first round of JavaScript completes. Unfortunately, the site I'm scraping has 3 different loading stages. 1) Load initial HTML 2) Do first round of JavaScript DOM manipulation 3) pause for half a second then do a second round of JS DOM manipulation. For some reason, the second round isn't cause by the wb_DocumentCompleted() function, but it is always caught when wb.ReadyState == Complete. So why not remove it from wb_DocumentCompleted()? I'm still not sure why it isn't caught there and that's where the beadsoftware article recommended putting it. I'm going to keep looking into it. I just wanted to publish this code so anyone who's interested can use it. • jQuery Map Highlight - works fine at DOM ready but failed when loaded by AJAX

  Hi all: This is uni assignment and I have already done some stuff. Please go to the password protected directory on : my server Enter username "uts" and password "10479475", both without quotes, into the prompt and you shall be able to see the webpage. Basically, if you hover your mouse on top of the contents in worldmap to the upperleft corner, you can see the underneath area is "highlighted" by a gray region and a red border. This is done using one jQuery plugin : at here This part works fine, however, after I use jQuery to load the specific continent map asynchronously, the newly loaded image cannot work correctly. Tested under Firebug, I can see the plugin doesn't "like" the new image cause I cannot find the canvas or other auto-generated stuff which can be founded around the worldmap. All the functionality is done in master.js, I believe you can just download a copy and check the code there. I do hope that I have followed the tutorials on the plugin's doc page, but I just cannot get through the final stage. In our implementation we use technologies like Forms authentication with MembershipProviders and RoleProviders. All went well until I ran into some difficulties with configuring the roles, because the roles aren't system-wide, but related to the customer accounts and projects. I can't name our exact setup/formula, because I think our company wouldn't approve that... What's a customer / project? Our company provides management information for our customers on a yearly (or other interval) basis. In our systems a customer/contract consists of: one Account: information about the Company per Account, one or more Products: the bundle of management information we'll provide per Product, one or more Measurements: a period of time, in which we gather and report the data Extranet site setup Eventually we want all customers to be able to access their management information with our online system. The extranet consists of two sites: Company site: provides an overview of Account information and the Products Measurement site: after selecting a Measurement, detailed information on that period of time The measurement site is the most interesting part of the extranet. We will create submodules for new overviews, reports, managing and maintaining resources that are important for the research. Our Visual Studio solution consists of a number of projects. One web application named Portal for the basis. The sites and modules are virtual directories within that application (makes it easier to share MasterPages among things). What kind of roles? The following users (read: roles) will be using the system: Admins: development users :) (not customer related, full access) Employees: employees of our company (not customer related, full access) Customer SuperUser: top level managers (full access to their account/measurement) Customer ContactPerson: primary contact (full access to their measurement(s)) Customer Manager: a department manager (limited access, specific data of a measurement) What about ASP.Net users? The system will have many ASP.Net users, let's focus on the customer users: Users are not shared between Accounts SuperUser X automatically has access to all (and new) measurements User Y could be Primary contact for Measurement 1, but have no role for Measurement 2 User Y could be Primary contact for Measurement 1, but have a Manager role for Measurement 2 The department managers are many individual users (per Measurement), if Manager Z had a login for Measurement 1, we would like to use that login again if he participates in Measurement 2. The system will have to check if the user has rights to the document. The document is related to a Measurement, the User or specific roles have specific rights to the document. What's the problem? (finally ;)) Roles aren't enough to determine what a user is allowed to see/access/download a specific item. It's not enough to say that a certain navigation item is accessible to Managers. When the user requests Measurement 1000, we have to check that the user not only has a Manager role, but a Manager role for Measurement 1000. Summarized: How can we limit users to their accounts/measurements? (remember superusers see all measurements, some managers only specific measurements) How can we apply roles at a product/measurement level? (user X could be primarycontact for measurement 1, but just a manager for measurement 2) How can we limit manager access to the reports screen and only to their department's reports?
